Minor MLB Transactions: 12/28/18

By Steve Adams | December 28, 2018 at 1:23pm CDT

Here are Friday’s minor moves from around the game…

  • The Giants have signed right-handed reliever Jamie Callahan to a minor league deal and invited him to Major League Spring Training, tweets USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. The 24-year-old Callahan had a brief stint with the Mets in 2017, during which time he yielded three runs on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. Callahan’s 2018 season was torched by injury — he pitched just 8 1/3 innings in Triple-A and allowed nine runs before undergoing shoulder surgery — but his 2017 results between Double-A and Triple-A were quite strong; in a combined 52 innings at those levels, Callahan notched a 2.94 ERA with 11.4 K/9, 2.9 BB/9 and 0.7 HR/9. Callahan averaged 95.9 mph on his heater in that brief MLB debut and will give the Giants a cheap, controllable option in the ’pen if he’s able to work his way back from this year’s shoulder woes.

I knew the Giants would be dumpster diving this offseason, but Cameron Rupp is the only dude I have ever even heard of.

Hopefully Zaidi holds out and gets something real good for Watson and Smith 🙂

Watson + Smith packaged together = a top 100 prospect. Hopefully it’s an outfielder.

Smith alone should net a top 100 prospect or equivalent package.

Smith has 1 year of control left. Thats not going to net a top 100

Smith is better than Miller and Britton. Easily the top LH reliever behind Chapman/Hader. I wouldn’t be overly surprised if Smith himself can net a borderline top 100 from a team like the Braves, who have a very deep farm.

What? Did Sean Doolittle, Fellipe Rivero and Brad Hand disappear. Because those are all guys who were better and had more years of control and got top 100 prospects in return

I’ll give you Doolittle, but Smith is still better than both Vasquez and Hand if you look at it from a 2018 perspective.

Vazquez put up better numbers and throws 100 as a lefty. Thats better than Smith

Serious revisionist history here. A top 100 prospect is just a baseline. Just because someone didn’t put them in their latest rankings doesn’t mean they won’t be there in the future. Rivero was not a high end reliever when dealt and he was traded for Melancon. Doolittle and Maddon netted both Blake treinen and a current consensus top 20 prospect in Jesus luzardo. Will Smith will net a very nice prospect or equivalent package. More importantly than all of that is that none of the aforementioned names are available.

Would the Yankees give up Albert Abreu? A top 100 arm, I could see it if they don’t resign Britton. They certainly could use a lefty besides Chapman. Don’t think that’s very far fetched.

Aroldis Chapman netted Gleyber Torres, and 3 others with only 2 months of control. Not equating Smith with Chapman, but 1 year of Smith could still bring back a nice, top 100 prospect, even if he’s not the equal of Torres. If Zaidi can’t get a nice prospect for Smith now, he simply holds on to him. There will probably be some team desperate for a LHR at the deadline.

Throwing heat means nothing anymore, Smith has a knee buckling slurve that equalize most hitters, lefty or righty. Smith is damn good, so is Watson. Any team that try’s to grab em, willllll pay, that’s a given.

This is exactly what I expect from Farhan. We should be investing in pitchers, we have one of the best track records for developing starters, and easily the most pitcher-friendly ballpark in baseball. Build from our strengths.

Mets called up a bunch of pitchers last year cause they needed rested arms. But once the player is on the 40 man roster a team has fewer options. Mets might have been ok to keep him on the Syracuse roster, but he chose to look elsewhere.

Wish Boston had resigned Callahan. Bust as a SP, then took off as a reliever finally in the Sox system. High 90’s FB with a good splitter.

Stop gap players until the deadwood contracts fall off. Giants clearly will not be contending in 2019.

Question is, what happens with Bumgarner? Watson? Smith? Those arms have to be worth a nice return?

All this talk about not contending is crazy to me! It’s risky to say they will be in contention, but just like any of these other teams that are spending big, if there players get hurt the next season everyone says “oh crap, they are declining” knock it off. The Giants were in the hunt last year until injuries took them out and they traded Cutch. If this teams youngsters come out and perform and Longo, Belt, Posey, Panik hit like they did a couple years ago, they’ll be in it. Like last year.

Giants have no chance of competing. And last year they were never really a threat, teetered around .500 wasn’t scaring anyone. When Gorky’s Hernandez has more HR than Posey, Longo, & Crawford…your not worrying any pitching staff. Posey has driven in 100+ runs once. Crawford & Longoria’s best days are behind them. Panic’s done, & Cueto is out for the year. Ty Blach gonna take over? SF needs to go get a masher that will hit 25+ HR’s & knock in 100 rbi every year. Then go get a lights out closer like Rob Nenn. Right now, theyre offense is enimic.

If your trading Watson & Smith, then I guess your not planing to win any games at all. You need to build your team around pitching and defense. Then add power hitters to your corner outfielders & third base. Move Posey to first 75 to 80 % of the time, trade Belt for an outfielder because they won’t get much more and let some of the kids play and develop at the MLB level. The Giants have never given much of any rookies 200 AB’s consistently to see what they can actually do.

No, the plan is to milk the bad contracts and see if this team can turn it around, and if this team is in the hunt come mid season they keep Watson, Smith, and Bum and go after some help. They aren’t going to trade until they see where they’re at mid way. Longos first year in national league parks plus the injury kept him back from 25 dingers last year. Healthy team, and these young pitchers show up, they’ll be close. And we all know how they like to perform in October.

Zaidi has been wondering around the dollar store since he was signed. What is he doing? He needs to trade Longo and Melancon for anything. Even eat some of their salaries if need be.

Longo only gets traded for some other team’s bad contract. There’s absolutely no need to trade Melancon. The only thing wrong with him is that he’s been a decent reliever while being paid like an elite one. No one is going to give the Giants anything for him, and since money is not really an issue for this team, they should just keep him. His production is somewhat useful, which is better than getting zip in return for moving him.

The quiet Giants’ offseason is reassuring. Especially compared to big splashes like Longoria or Zito.

I think Farhan has a definite plan in mind, might just take some time to put it together, but he knows not only what he’s doing, but the types of players this team needs to turn the corner.
