The Nationals have had a pair of “brief” meetings with Josh Harrison’s representatives at MSM Sports, tweets Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post. While there’s mutual interest, Dougherty reports that Harrison’s camp is also looking “closely” at other landing spots as well. Whether that’s due to what the Nats would be willing to offer, how they’d plan to use Harrison or another factor remains to be seen. The Nats have some uncertainty at second base, where Wilmer Difo and Howie Kendrick (who missed most of 2018 due to a ruptured Achilles) currently sit atop the depth chart. Top prospect Carter Kieboom may not be far from the big leagues, but adding a stable short-term option still makes plenty of sense for Washington. The Nats have been connected to Harrison several times over the past couple of weeks, but the versatile 31-year-old surely has other teams interested in his services. He’s been tied to the Yankees and Reds at various points this winter.
A few more notes on the free-agent market…
- Craig Kimbrel’s lofty asking price — a reported six years and $100MM — and the lack of big-market clubs currently willing to spend on a late-inning reliever could present the right-hander with a difficult market this winter, Buster Olney of ESPN.com writes. Olney likens the situation to last year’s tepid market for J.D. Martinez — a similarly elite player for his position (designated hitter) who lingered on the open market until landing in Boston in late February — a match that long seemed inevitable. The Red Sox may be the best bet for Kimbrel, too, Olney opines, especially given the plethora of more affordable options for smaller and mid-market clubs to pursue even if they do want to bolster the back end of their bullpens.
- The Marlins are one of several teams that has reached out to free-agent right-hander Bud Norris, tweets Craig Mish of SiriusXM. Miami has thinned out its bullpen this offseason by trading Kyle Barraclough (to Washington), and there’s a definitive lack of experienced arms at the back end of the organization’s bullpen. At present, Drew Steckenrider is the presumptive favorite to close games for skipper Don Mattingly, although the right-hander struggled down the stretch in 2019. Even as the Marlins rebuild the organization, there’s still an obvious opportunity to add some low-cost bullpen options to help take the stress off younger arms and, potentially, to be traded for further minor league talent down the line. The 33-year-old Norris has a 3.91 ERA with 10.6 K/9, 3.6 BB/9 and 47 saves over the past two seasons — the most recent of which was spent with the Cardinals.
- The Angels’ best offer to J.A. Happ topped out at two years and a total of $28MM, reports Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register (via Twitter). That checks in $6MM shy of the two-year total that Happ received to return to the Yankees, so it’s hardly surprising that Happ opted for the familiarity of an organization he already knew and a greater guarantee. Both offers contained vesting options, Fletcher notes. With Happ, Patrick Corbin, Nathan Eovaldi, Charlie Morton and Lance Lynn all off the board, the Halos have begun to see some of their free-agent options dwindle. Dallas Keuchel and Yusei Kikuchi are the top two starters from MLBTR’s Top 50 free agent list remaining, though as can be seen in our Free Agent Tracker, there are plenty of available options beyond that pairing. And, of course, the trade market will offer various options for the Angels, whose rejuvenated farm system should appeal to many clubs with pitching to spare.

That delivery of his suits the Red Sox. Let him stay there.

You mean like a neanderthal dragging his knuckles?
pasha2k
And what is that supposed to mean? Another frustrated NYY fan.

Not like the Angels need pitching, so I can see not wanting to increase the offer to Happ by as much as Pujols makes in a month.
mannyl101
Hahahahaha your correct sir!

Kikuchi is a really interesting target. When does his posting period end.
jorge78
Sometime first week of January I think…..
Cat Mando
It opened Dec. 4th and posting periods last 30 days

Keuchel to the Halos makes sense.
Philliesfan4life
Angels already have too many lefties , they need somebody like anibal sanchez. And trade Calhoun for Tehrean
LosAngelesAngelesAngelesAngels
There’s no such thing as having too many lefties. What difference does it make if the pitchers get the job done? I would love the Angels to sign Kikuchi. Also I have been saying they should sign Anibal to a one year deal so I agree there.
gmenfan
Tell that to my drawer of mittens !
outinleftfield
80% of batters are RH. That gives the advantage to nearly every team if you have all lefties.
nymetsking
I’d rather have a good LH SP that adds lefthanded-redundancy than a crap RH SP. Sign him and move one of the others for a RH SP if it’s that much of a problem.
LosAngelesAngelesAngelesAngels
Exactly^

The Braves aren’t trading Teheran for Calhoun. They’d probably rather give Teheran away for nothing other than salary relief.
HalosHeavenJJ
He’s trending down in a lot of ways and comes with draft pick compensation. At a certain price point everyone makes sense, but I doubt Dallas falls to that price point.
GeoKaplan
This.
Keuchel looks like CJ Wilson v 2.0. Good career to date, but a lot of pitches on the legs and arm. Wilson pitched well when he played, but developed more nagging injuries as he hit his mid-30s.
Keuchel will demand a high price, and cost a draft pick for compensation as well. This is a good idea for some team, but I think the Angels have seen up close how this story will play out.
angelsinthetroutfield
I think he hits the reasonable range TBH. Not sure if the Halos jump (I wouldn’t hate it) but I can see a 4/$76m or 5/$80m contract, I’ve heard Pettitte comps before and MLBTR has drawn lines connecting Keuchel/Happ profiles. If either are accurate he should provide good value over that contract term.
Miguel guerrero
No thanks. He had a hard decline and with the angels history of luck with pitchers he’s gonna disappoint my hopes and dreams
HalosHeavenJJ
I keep saying Gio Gonzalez makes sense for the Angels. He’s durable and gets a lot of ground balls, which plays into the strength of the Angels infield. Cozart/Simba/Fletcher is a great defensive infield.
bkbkbk
Nice idea.
I forsee Gio, Sonny Gray, Kelvin Herrera and Grandal by 1/31. There was a a rumor that Arte was in Vegas twice to see Harper (via tracking his PJ tail number). That would be absolutely wild.
Vizionaire
signing harper means only that arte has someone to advertise. he won’t have enough to sign trout even if he can be enticed to stay. this team is being run by wrong people. and those pitchers will not take this team to the promised land and trout will go to where he has helps to win.
bkbkbk
Can’t tell if this is a parody account. His takes always read like google translate.
tophaloph
I dunno, man. I kinda see the world where signing Harper secures Trout over the long haul. I know I am being blatantly optimistic here but there has to be at least one reality in which Bryce walks into a room with Arte, Ausmus, Billy Eps, and Trout. The conversation goes a little something like this
[The Angels team seated at a conference table. Bryce Harper sits down. Arte is asleep.]
Bryce: I want all the money.
Billy Boy: All the money?
Trout: What about my money?
Billy Boy: We will get you your money. Just hear me out.
[Eppler tosses a giant bag of Starbursts on the table. The sound startles Arte awake]
BH & MT: SWEET, STARBURSTS!
Trouty: ARE THEY ALL PINK ONES?!
Billy Boy: You bet your sweet WAR they are. [Harper and Trout high five so hard Arte falls out of his chair]
Arte: Whoopsie doodles. Hey, can I have a staburster too?
Ausmus: No.
Billy Boy: Look, we sign you both and we have a 2/3 combo for the ages. Don’t even get me started on adding Ohtani to the mix. Structure your deal to be a little more forgiving over the next two years with until old Albatross Pujols is off the books and then enjoy wealth beyond your wildest dreams, oh and all the starbursts you can shake a bat at.
[Harper’s brow furrows as he considers. He shovels a handful of starbusts into his mouth, wrappers still on. Chews. Swallows]
Bryce: Throw in a lifetime supply of Axe body spray and you got yourself a deal.
[Arte raises his hand]
Arte: High five, my dude!
Everyone but Arte and Bryce: ARTE! Noooooooooo!
[Bryce high fives Arte so hard he vaporizes. No one seems to care]
Billy: Trouty, you in?
Trouty: Hell yeah.
[Freeze as everyone jumps with victorious fist pumps. Your the best around plays as we fade to black]
I can TOTALLY see this happening…am I right or am. I. right?
Cubguy13
Lmao! Well done Tophaloph
Ace of Diamonds
He will be able to re-sign Trout even if Harper is signed, because Pujols comes off the books 1 year after Trout’s extension goes into effect. So there will an extra $25M then. He may need to go over for 1 year at the most.
jbigz12
This was terrible. I’ve seen X get trolled to death and this was worse.
Michael Chaney
They’re chased big names too often the past few years, and have put less emphasis depth. Whenever they’ve had a big injury, it’s ruined them because they never seem to have anyone adequate to fill in. So Harper, in my admittedly useless opinion, would be a terrible use of their resources.
The best thing for them to do would be to get a few sturdy arms for the rotation that wouldn’t cost a lot (Gio would be a good example), to build up depth for whenever the rotation injuries strike again.
HalosHeavenJJ
Exactly. The Angels have a good core in Trout/Ohtani/Upton/Simba but the talent drop off after them is steep. The team needs to build the floor, particularly on the pitching side.
We had Omar Despaigne starting games last year. Just think about that. 2-3 decent guys need to be added to make sure that level of desperation doesn’t get reached again.
GeoKaplan
The reign of Despaigne was mainly a pain.
I can see the *value* in signing Harper, even if I’m not a fan. There is an obvious opportunity for an increase in fan engagement (tickets and merchandise), and a LH bat would be welcome addition. Of course, so would the return of Calhoun’s bat.
But improving SP and RP would mean the offense wouldn’t have to work as hard. Even Kikuchi would figure to be be a fraction of the price Harper is expecting, and less than Keuchel.
Ace of Diamonds
The difference with Harper compared to Pujols, and Hamilton the other big names you speak of is Harper is 25 not 35. Harper is coming into his prime not leaving it. The comparison between Harper and Pujols is apples and rocking chairs. I sincerely doubt the Angels sign Harper but it wouldn’t be the worst thing the world.
Papabueno
Better be good at turning double plays, because Gio is really good at walking people too. He is also the worst pitcher in baseball when looking for a shut-down inning. If his team gives him a lead, he can’t wait to give it back. Been watching him for five years in DC. So happy he’s gone.
Rex Block
He does have some really epic bases-loaded none-out jam escapes on his resume. They don’t call him “Giodini” for nothing.
Papabueno
So true. Living on the edge.
madmc44
DD knows Kimbrel’s value.
Is he worth the $17.9 M QO? No.
I would think he might get a 3 yr $40 M deal with an opt-out after yr 1 or 2 from DD.
He did not pitch that well in 2018.
Atlanta may be his final home.
pinballwizard1969
He’ll do better than $40MM over 3 yrs. But no way he gets 6 yrs or even 5 yrs there may be one GM out there willing to go to 4 but that’s the max IMO.
thefenwayfaithful 2
It baffles my mind that agents sometimes seem to have no read on the market. In a market where Robertson and Miller are going to get around 2 year deals and Ottavino is still out there, there simply isn’t enough need and there are enough options to sign a few guys and hope to catch fire with one.
Kimbrel has 2 options. Sign a 4-year deal around 70 mil, or sign a one year deal for 19-20 mil with the Red Sox or 2/$36 with an opt out and re-enter the market a year or 2 older. I’m not even sure the Sox would go that high or have to go that high AAV. But the faster they bring down that asking price the better chance he gets the multi-year deal and doesnt have to settle. History will not be made for a closer this off-season unless it’s a 1 year deal AAV record. I think he returns to Boston in February.
Cam
Saying he did not pitch well is ignorant. He didn’t pitch up to his otherworldly track record, but he still had a great season.
62IP, 2.74 ERA, 13.9 K/9 – really good.
pinballwizard1969
Just my opinion but anything more than 3 yrs guaranteed with potentially a 4th year vesting option and the acquiring team is taking a big risk. He really took a step lack in 2018. K’s down, Walks up, ERA up, FIP up and he’ll turn 31 a month after the season gets under way. My suggestion 3 yrs/$51MM max of a guarantee otherwise move on.
nunzio1749
I kind of want Josh on the Yankees he is a pros pro unspectacular and solid start at 2b while Gleyber plays short stay away from Johnny Hustle and maybe he is like Brosius bottom of order bat who comes through not expecting 99 rbis just a good steady player
tiredolddude
Having seen him play for the last few years, I think you have him pegged perfectly. In your scenario, he fits well. He’s a hustle guy, a team guy who can play a number of positions
Bald Vinny
Thay dude,CashMan, be killing it lately. Pays 4M more for Happ and gives him a 3rd year. For a pitcher in their age 37-39 years. Money.
xabial
Vesting option 3rd year. If sucks/gets injured, 2 years.
Better than 30M+ more for pitcher wth 2TJs throws 101
Needed the Lackey clause more than any other pitcher
pinballwizard1969
There was so many mistakes in “Bald Vinny’s” post that it wasn’t worth replying to. Starting with but not limited to age Hepp will be in that 3rd year if and when it vests. You can’t fix stupid.
xabial
Actually, Vinny has the right amount nuanced trolling. Wouldn’t surprise me if he knew.
Happ’s age is the biggest question mark and I wasn’t comfortable going beyond year because Father Time is undefeated… But way I see it, Lowe got 4 years 60M same age as Happ lol
thegreatcerealfamine
Been killing it all offseason. Right now he’s looking for a 40 year old shortstop to sign, in Cashman they trust.
xabial
Posturing not to raise Bryce Harper’s price…
LH batter Yanks have been seeking is within grasp
Cashman refuses to be used by game’s best agent, as leverage — despite arguable greater long-term fit than Machado due to LH. If George was still alive, maybe 2009 2.0 w/ Manny and Harper signed but, new era and we have to accept possibility of even none
xabial
I remain hopeful much to most mlbtr chagrin
thegreatcerealfamine
Please don’t get me started on that damn Stanton trade.
jbigz12
Here’s a long term fit. Machado can play defense well. Your 3b can’t. You also owe a lot of money to Corner outfielders as it is. With more coming to Judge in a few years.
jbigz12
With the tax rate differences in the two states it’s even more significant than that, Vin!
Bryzzo2016
Kimbrel is asking for too much, I agree, but I have a feeling that the Phils will come close to his ask and sign him. I don’t think he’s going back to Boston. They’re too smart to put that much of an investment into a closer on the wrong side of 30.
disgruntledreader 2
Steve Adams comes back from the future to report on 2019, and all we get is info on a bad reliever for an awful organization?
dcrising
Not sure Harrison’s much of an upgrade for the Nats. Howie’s been better than him offensively and Difo’s better defensively. Nats should pass and spend the money on pitching. Only 2Bs they should consider are Lowrie and Lemahieu. Would’ve like Gennett back in the Roark deal, but missed that opportunity. This position doesn’t need to be overthought.
Rex Block
Howie — though I love him like a brother — is a defensive liability. Not sure how well he’s going to come back after the injury either. But he’s a great clubhouse presence. No way we were gonna get Scooter for Roark – Rizzo just practically unloaded him. I think it’s between Josh and DJ.
Omarj
I still think Gray makes the most sense for the Angels. Gio Gonzalez would be okay, but Halos need a solid #2 Starter, Might be too tough to get #1, or a #1B
msqboxer
Yankees when it comes to free agents…were not sure we want you..go get the best offer you can and come back to us J.A. Happ. Is that all the Angels offered? Here’s 6MM more because we are the Deathstar!
NateSPURS
Really worked well for Corbin and other better FA than Happ…
Papabueno
Harrison isn’t as good a hitter as Kendrick, and I doubt his defense is much better either. The only thing he has going for him is he can play 3B as well. I’d rather have Howie and Difo cover 2B, and evaluate at the deadline. Maybe C Kieboom could be ready by then.
bigrickdeemann
What 10 year contract has ever worked out? Usually it ends up being a Pujols or Cabrera deal where it’s a big problem the last 3 or 4 years.. I don’t think the Stanton thing is working out and Machado for 10 at 30 mil is ridiculous. Some of the 5 year deals don’t make much sense either. Machado and his no hustle thing. This stuff is laughable. What’s it going to be if they don’t sign, collusion.
tannedt
The Jeter contract worked out.
Guest617
kimbrel hired the wrong agent – he about to learn the hard way
jd396
LAST post!
Bubba 5
Pujols at 33 years old was INSANE. It has killed the Angels. Don’t forget the BUST that was Josh Hamilton. Trout will never win there due to the Angels not spending about 6 million to go out and get someone.
SG
Would love to keep Kimbrel in Boston but I have no idea what Kimbrel will settle for of how high the Red Sox will go to keep him due to the luxury tax issue.
I also do think that the QO is a drag on his going elsewhere.
Altanta Barves
Has Kimbrel upped his offer yet? Last I checked he was only at 30 years, $500 billion.
andrew.jones100@icloud.com
It’s now 45 years and $980 Billion with a $78 Million vesting Option for 2063. Incentives of $100MM if 1 IP, or 1 GS.
gino 2
The Nats should be very bold I. There search for someone to play 2nd base. Here’s what I would like to see………
1st trade for Z. Greinke (Arizona will eat a huge portion of his contract)
2nd trade for M. Fulmer (he had a bad year but he would rebound rather nicely I. Washington)
Trade S. Stratsburg to the Yankee’s for G. Torres (2nd base problem solved for years to come)
Washington would be left with Scherzer, Corbin, Greinke, Fulmer as the top 4 pitchers! That’s pretty good.
The infield would be set for years if they lock up Rendon (I don’t see it happening, I think Boras will take him to free agency and the Nats loose yet another star for nothing), Turner, Torres and Zim/Adams would be a good infield.
Honestly if the Nats don’t have Rendon locked up by the start of camp then I would trade him to the highest bidder and move on. Don’t want to see him move on for nothing.
Rex Block
Nats don’t have a lot to trade and their best prospects are projected to make the team (Robles). What would the Yanks be looking for, Raudy Reed? They already solved their catcher problem.
Nats would have to eat that Strasburg contract … plus given his injury history why would Cashman bite on that? Kluber is still out there and the Yanks are loaded with prospects to dangle in front of the Indians. (Still that would be a great rotation)
Absolutely on Rendon. That should be a huge priority after the offseason moves are settled. Nats still need a steady 1b-man — Zimm will be done in 2020 and Matt Adams is not a permanent solution.
