Long-time backstop David Ross has agreed to a new, multi-year deal to continue working as an analyst with ESPN. That news would seem to eliminate him from contention as a possible Cubs bench coach target, which is no surprise given recent indications. It would also appear to suggest that Ross won’t be looking to move into a dugout in the near future, though he’ll no doubt remain a popular candidate for significant gigs every time there’s an opening.
Let’s check in on the latest market notes …
- The Dodgers’ interest in star free agent Bryce Harper remains a storyline to watch. The Los Angeles club doesn’t seem inclined to tantalize Harper with a record-setting overall guarantee, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic suggests (subscription link). Rather, the club would be more interested in a shorter-term pact with a “high” average annual value and multiple opt-out clauses along the way. ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez heard largely the same late last week, while adding a few intriguing additional details. Harper “badly wants to be a Dodger,” says Gonzalez, but would have to sacrifice years and dollars in order to make that dream a reality. That also meshes with a recent report from ESPN’s Buster Olney, wherein Olney suggested that a front-loaded deal with a huge annual value could be the most appealing scenario to Los Angeles. Details are understandably sparse at this point, but generally, it stands to reason that if Harper and agent Scott Boras were to consider anything shy of a record-setting contract in terms of overall value and/or length, they’d likely need to establish a new high-water mark in terms of AAV by a considerable margin. That doesn’t seem like something that Harper’s camp would consider until a ways down the line, however, as Boras & Co. are quite likely still locked in on a longer-term mega-deal. The timeline for Harper’s signing remains unclear at the moment.
- Harper and Manny Machado will continue to fascinate until they sign, but with both still holding in-person meetings it could take a while for that to come together. What that may mean for the Phillies is worth pondering, as the organization has its sights set on significant improvements in multiple areas. Club president Andy MacPhail says there’s still ongoing interest in both stars, but also notes “there are a lot of different ways to improve,” as MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki writes. Citing a need to “give yourself enough latitude to deal with each offseason as it comes,” MacPhail certainly struck a somewhat different tone than owner John Middleton did recently. In part, he sought to emphasize the more restrained elements of Middleton’s comments — particularly, those indicating that the club does not feel it must land Harper and/or Machado to have had a productive offseason.
- The Astros are “back in the mix” for Marlins star J.T. Realmuto, per MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro (via Twitter). It’s fair to wonder whether the Houston club was ever really fully out of the hunt. The club did add Robinson Chirinos and still has Max Stassi on hand, but that combination surely isn’t sufficient to sap the ’Stros’ interest in the top catcher in the game. Perhaps it’s not out of the question that the club would consider carrying three catchers if they swing a blockbuster, with Realmuto perhaps representing an option in the DH/first base mix and Chirinos also providing a potent bench bat against left-handed pitching (.258/.353/.485 career slash). Whatever the plan would be, the Astros first need to land Realmuto. As Frisaro hints, the club’s reported deal with Michael Brantley could be seen as an indication that top prospect Kyle Tucker — who’d surely be of keen interest to the Fish — might just be available. Of course, as Frisaro also notes, a variety of other teams remain in pursuit of Realmuto at this stage.
- The Brewers nearly struck a deal with the Rangers for Mike Minor, Rosenthal further reports (subscription link), though it’s largely unclear what shape such an agreement would have taken and whether talks are still open. For Milwaukee, the connection makes clear that boosting the pitching mix remains a goal of the offseason. The organization has quite a few solid pieces in place, many of which could be utilized as needed in the rotation, in the bullpen, or as minor-league depth. Minor would certainly fit that general mold, as he has shown the ability to function as a high-quality reliever or solid back-of-the-rotation starter in recent years. It’s notable that the Texas org seems to be batting around multiple trade scenarios on the lefty, even in a winter in which they have taken further risks on other veteran hurlers.

Phils management obviously walking back high expectations concerning free agents. Disappointing development. Oh well, I suppose we’ll have to be happy with a .500 team this year.
brave from the woods
Don’t worry much. Looks like the Braves have done their major signings already unless someone notable lowers themselves down to a one year deal.
DannyQ3913
Typical pessimistic fan.
EndinStealth
They still have Kapler as manager. I think .500 is optimistic.
PhanaticDuck26
There would be no need to “walk back high expectations” if Middleton hadn’t issued that “stupid money” quote. He could have been been more realistic and said something along the lines of “we will offer top dollar to the big free agents, but ultimately the decision is up to them on whether they want to take the most money or play for their favorite team/city.” It’s not a disappointing development; it’s simply what should have been presented to the fanbase from the start, rather than some vague, “stupid” quote setting high expectations.
ThatBallwasBryzzoed
That’s too bad. Ross would have been a perfect fit for the Cubs bench coach.
bucketbrew35
“That’s too bad. Ross would have been a perfect fit for the Cubs bench coach.”
I have a feeling he will coach eventually. He just retired in 2016 after spending 15 years in the MLB traveling all over the place. He probably is getting some nice money for this gig while also maximizing his family time. It makes sense that he would want to relax for a little while before getting back into it.
hojostache
Spot on. While i’m not a Cubs fan, I enjoyed rooting for the old guy to go out on top. Sharp guy and he should be a great manager, like quite a few catchers before him.
Ironman_4life
David Ross has a good job already.
MetsYankeesRedSox
David Ross…. Jon Lester says hello!
Nigel Mckenzie
I don’t understand why all 30 clubs wouldn’t look at David Ross as a possible coach.
petrie000
Because he has no coaching experience at all?
We all love Rossy, but that’s a lot more of an issue than people seem to realize
ChiSoxCity
There are tons of ex-players with no coaching experience coaching in the MLB now.
petrie000
He doesn’t just have no coaching experience in MLB, he has no coaching experience anywhere.
There’s literally no way of knowing if he’ll be any good at the job. So while I’m not saying he will be bad, if you’re running a major league team, that should be a concern. You have no idea what you’re getting.
Hiring him as a minor league coach or instructor to see if he has any idea what he’s doing would be fine, but jumping him straight to bench coach is probably not the best idea.
trout27
That is the Boras way. Get two or more clubs to bid against each other then eliminate all but one and get that club to bid against itself. This could be the plan with the Dodgers and Phillies.
Brewer67
Hows one get experience if they dont start somewhere?
petrie000
Same way the players do, mostly… College and the minor leagues
Nigel Mckenzie
Totally understand you point of view but Ross has been around coaches his whole career from Dusty Baker Bobby Cox to joe madden I’ve learned quite a bit just from high school and summer coaches myself so I’m sure he picked up stuff from HOF coaches. He pretty much was a player coach with the cubs. It wasn’t his title but I’m sure he helped a lot of the younger players. So idk it’s an inexact science. And I’m glad I don’t have to make those decisions.

I was in Los Angeles on the 15th of November, omg its a toilet. So Dirty, bums going to bathroom on the sidewalks, let him go there,
Harwood
This is true, but the thing most out of state people don’t get is that most of the LA market does not actually live in the dump that is the city of Los Angeles, or even that awful county for that matter. If Harper goes to the Dodgers he’ll most certainly live in south-OC or Ventura county like a lot of celebrities & wealthy do. Far, far away from the miles & miles of Mayor Garcetti’s homeless toilet streets.
And to be fair NYC is a bigger dump by far. There you’re trapped on as island of homeless feces. Actually if we’re going by feces per square mile I think San Francisco might be the national leader lol
bklynny67
San Francisco has areas that are a major dump for sure, but LA does not compare to NY city. The actual city of LA is absolutely disgusting and embarrassing. It takes the cake for dirtiest and most disgusting. I’ve lived in both cities and it’s not close.
danielking
Lmaoooooo no way he makes that commute from Ventura Co or OC
leftcoaster
Exactly, millions of us sane people live an hour or two away.
Harwood
Most of them do sport. Kobe did it from Newport. Half of Hollywood does it from Malibu & Calabasas. If you work in downtown or Hollywood, chances are you’re commuting from somewhere.
socalblake
Well Mike Scioscia lives in Agoura Hills. That’s a pretty significant drive to Anaheim.
hojostache
There is only one NYC….it smells like feet, sounds like Fran Drescher, and is like stepping in dirty hot dog water on a 98 degree day. Even with all of that, it’s a phenomenal city for the 0.1%’ers. World class food, entertainment, etc. LA has Hollywood and whatnot, but the actually city and stuff to do…it’s Gary, Indiana compared to NYC.
tac3
So Harper wants “badly” to be a Dodger? Well … I guess not bad enough, or he would’ve signed already. These athletes crack me up. What the author should’ve conveyed was “Harper wants badly to be a Dodger if the money is right … record setting right”
Same goes for Machado & NYY. He is scheduled to meet the Yanks tomorrow, so put your signature where your heart is Machado …. but I’m sure he’ll still head to Phi to hear their offer… as it will be more, and ultimately take the most cash.
So transparent. If they both really wanted to play for a particular team, you sign early in FA to allow your team to beef up other areas, since I’m sure you also want to not only get paid, but win too. Lastly, if their hearts desired so much to be on one team, they’d not push the contract to ridiculous lengths, as to hurt the future flexibility of signing such improvements in the future.
Again, both are extremely transparent. They will sign with the team that dumps the most cash in their laps, and this will be proven for MM within a weeks time.
MetsYankeesRedSox
Agree totally
jekporkins
I hear what you’re saying, but we’re not talking about a few dollars here. It could be $30-$50 million dollars (or more) they are negotiating with. That’s a serious chunk of change. This is a once-in-a-lifetime moment for both players. I don’t blame them for taking their time to get the best deal they can get.
Also, I got to think the opposite is happening with their free agency, meaning teams are trying to almost underbid each other. Nobody wants to do 10 years, and nobody wants to pay over $300 million. Just look at the post above for proof.
heater
While you are right, who blames anyone for taking the most money? I for one think their eventual contract values will be way too much money regardless who they sign with and for how much but the game has changed in the sense that there is no such thing as loyalty to your original team any more. Save a handful of players. Good for them for making the most cash as they can possible get their hands on.
tac3
To both of your replies, very fair points. I’m not blaming anyone from getting what they can get while they can get it. Kudos to them. My point was don’t act like you’re not going to the highest bidder. 99% of the time, that is what happens. Sure there is always someone who goes against the grain, but I’d be shocked if it was Harper or Machado.
Ultimately I’m asking them to stop the schrads, if you want to sign with a particular team, I honestly believe they would have. I’m sure the agents have negotiated enough to get to a place that is close enough to their asking price for their “preferred” teams. It’s just that the top offer trumps their top choice of team. Will see this happen shortly will Machado, within a week, if not Thursday. The yanks are at 30mil AAV, the Phils have been rumored to go up to 40 mil AAV if necessary, but that doesn’t look to be needed. I’m guessing 33-36 AAV for Machado. 8-10 years.
GeoKaplan
Boom, tac3 gets it.
The player shouldn’t whine about how much he wants to play for Team X—just instruct the agent to make it happen. The agent works FOR the player, not the other way around. The player controls the outcome.
If he’s in this for $10M more guaranteed, then bravo for getting the extra bucks, but shut up about missed opportunities to play elsewhere.
Jered Weaver signed an extension of $85M/5 years with the Angels in 2011 and skipped free agency. He wanted to play in his hometown, and worked out a deal which made both parties happy (except Weaver’s agent, Scott Boras).
At the press conference, a reporter asked Weaver about possibly leaving money on the table by not going through free agency, maybe scoring $100M/5 years. He replied that $85M was tremendous money that would set up his grandchildren’s lives, and if he blew $85M then the “lost” $15M wouldn’t matter.
If Harper really wants to play for the Dodgers, he will instruct Boras to make it happen, as Weaver did 7 years ago. Otherwise, he should shut up.

Alden Gonzales is a click bait writer. Nothing he says ever turns out to be true. I was wondering how he still has a job until I realized he works for ESPN. They are more interested in clickbait than real sports news.

Harpsichord to the Philsies.
RedFeather
I hope all teams hold out in Harper and Machado forcing them to sign a one year deal. If a team pays 400 million were probably looking at a bump in the CBA and possibly a strike. Harper gets 400 million, we will be talking about Trout making 500 million and this just has to stop.
kershawsgrandma22
Why would they settle for a 1 year deal instead of just taking a long term deal at a lower AA?
wrigleywannabe
And if they did that, we’d have a collusion based complaint and possible strike
niched
Not paying an absurd amount a money for players not close to being worth it isn’t close to being collusion. Few of these huge long term signings have been worth it. Arod’s contract was terrible and Stanton’s is a joke. Things do not always go up. Look at the stock market.
petrie000
If it’s all 30 teams acting in concert to force a player to make less money… Than that’s pretty much text book collusion.
And I’m still not sure how rapidly rising contract values would lead to a strike. that one needs to be explained to me
niched
Your first sentence is so vague as to mean nothing at all. If all 30 teams refuse to pay Bob Uecker a $100 million contract, that doesn’t make it collusion. If the market determines at this point and time that Harper and Machado are not worth as much as Stanton or Arod or even Jason Heyward, then that’s what the market determines. The burden of proof for collusion would be very high — not just the ridiculous demands of a couple of players who in some years have not evenhave an OPS over .900
petfoodfella
Word of the year. Collusion. Never been mentioned before now.
Marius
I don’t see the problem with someone getting $500 mil. If the market and revenues dictate high salaries, then who cares? I don’t hear anyone complain what Howard Stern or Judge Judy’s salaries are (hint: It’s high. It’s very high).
WarrenSpahn
Judge Judy is totally worth it…
petrie000
If she’s making more money for her employers than she’s earning, she is.
juicemane
According to Fangraphs ( I say this as a joke because i think they’re hacks) each WAR is worth 9 mil…So Trout should be making 81 mil a year! when he signs a new contract.
At least that’s the logic they used with Mike Leake.
Black Ace57
The Phillies management is really screwing this up. Making smaller moves on the side isn’t enough. They are probably 4th in the division right now and it’s not like we have a bunch of prospects to plug in the holes. Middleton wants to spend and if Klentak and McPhail don’t get one of Harper or Machado then they won’t keep their jobs much longer.
Samuel
No one can make a player sign with a team.
As I’ve explained a dozen times – the Phillies “rebuild” is a joke. Sure they have a couple very good players – but most teams do. Two years ago the Marlins couldn’t win with Stanton, Yelich, Realmuto, Ozuna, and others. Do the Phillies have a young core anything like that?
We are now at the “your money is only so green” stage……
One, two, or three name players added to a crummy core doesn’t make a team competitive. Phillie fans and their management have unrealistic expectations. When a few high-priced free agents sign long contracts and the team doesn’t win…who do the media and fans turn to?…..”those lousy free agents and their high salaries are killing us!”. And Philly is a harsh town – one of the worst – for a pro athlete to play in when the fans and media are on him.
How happy was Jake Arrieta last year? He spoke out.
Yet again I write – the Phillies role this off-season is to drive up the price that marketable free agents can get from teams that have good situations.
DadsInDaniaBeach
Jake Arrieta spoke out all right…but against the exaggerated defensive shifts Gabe Kapler directed..he was burned so many times by it, you could call him toast
PhanaticDuck26
Typical pessimistic fan spouting off idiotic complaints in every direction, particularly with the lousy comparison to the Marlins. They had the solid core of homegrown players but were unwilling to add more money and pieces in FA to round out the team (especially pitchers). The phils will not have this problem as they’ve been able to field MLB’s 6th-best rotation in terms of K/9 rate with a group of homegrown arms, and they are more than willing to support this group with better defense (which we’ve seen already), better offense (hopeful and pretty confident they can land Machado), and a top bullpen piece. I know I’m cherry-picking one K/9 pitching stat here but I’d rather do that and support my optimism for the Phillies having a competitive season, rather than whining about every move or non-move like you do.
Samuel
If you’re a Phillies fan, I’m sincerely sorry for you.
You (and millions of others) deserved better from that rebuild. As far as your young core goes – there’s no there there.
The GM, his scouting and development staffs are awful. The manager is very probably the worst in the majors. From what I’ve seen players do not want to play for him. Moving guys around the field and experimenting with their roles is not something young players and their agents look at fondly. Like most young adults, they want to be respected for their talents, given some stability, and feel they’re on a career path.
Yes, the Marlins didn’t have the money to add to their core. But what a core they had! Not the Phillies. How many blown high draft choices is a front office allowed?
The national sports media is falling all over themselves with the Phillies and Padres this off-season. That is ridiculous. It’s the Braves that had a great rebuild; promoted a solid experienced manager; won the NLE; still have a stacked farm; and have made surgical moves to improve in 2019 – yet they’re taken for granted.
deadline63
Let’s not forget that the Marlins were not planning on the death of Jose Fernandez – a young, talented, affordable, controlled ace pitcher.
NeedsMoreTime
You lose any credibility when you spew the same old, tired, espn mentality of “the media and fans are the worst”. They boo in the Bronx, booed puljos at the end in st Louis… Etc. Why not just be a complete hack and say something about Santa. The national media is “falling all over them” because they were active. The Segura trade was newsworthy, or do you think that the Yankees signing happ was a more newsworthy event? What are they supposed to talk about? The “joke rebuild” you speak of resulted in 14 more wins last year than in 2017…why not be optimistic that they’ll win more with the moves they’ve made plus any move they might make? Have the they not improved? Cry about fans and media…

Harper has played on a very powerful team in the Nationals for years. Yet they couldn’t win a playoff series. Sounds like he is not the missing piece for any team. Machado ever lead his former teams to a championship?
wrigleywannabe
I agree that Harper is vadtly overrated, but the championship guideline is silly. That could he said about a lot of great players.
niched
Machado is more overrated than Harper. He only has one season with an OPS over .900, he’s not a good SS, and he was terrible for the Dodgers in the World Series. There’s a reason the Dodgers aren’t trying to keep him.

Do you guys ever think The Yankees antiquated hair length/facial hair policy comes in to play with some dealings? Bryce Harper has the look with his long hair and beard for long stretches but I think he is back to shaving now. What about Synderguard? The long hair is part of his look.
What sayeth you?
pinkerton
I can see that. Some of these guys with their long soupcatchers and chinwigs don’t want to lose it because it probably helps with their self-confidence or their look. It’s kind of what made that goofball Brian Wilson so intimidating.
It’s a long tradition that the Yankees could maybe abandon. It’s a different time now.
bernbabybern
No one in their right mind is going to turn down many more millions of dollars because of a hair policy. If the offers are close then that might be one of many possible factors in the decision making.
niched
I don’t know about that. Facial hair is as part of the culture now as it was in the 1800s. I can’t see Abe Lincoln shaving his beard for the Yankees, which should Bryce Harper? If the Yankees are stuck in the clean cut 1950s, maybe that’s why they’ve only been to the WS once in the past 15 years.
Knowthemarket
I could see that being a factor. The Yankees have a business professional appearance which they have made into their clubhouse culture. Pretty much business men on a baseball field.
I don’t think they will even SHOULD break it for Harper. They are the winningest team in baseball and their culture plays a part in that.
And just before the Yankee haters jump all over me I’ve been a Braves fan since the 80’s. I absolutely love watching the Yankees lose. Nothing would be a greater thrill to me than to see the Braves beat them in a world series, but there is some amount of respect I have for them.

their culture plays a part in them winning so much?? really its more like they used to outspend everyone to buy the best players available and THATS why they kept winning…without their unlimited budget their business look wouldnt have won them anything..
stansfield123
Well, the goal, at least in the Steinbrenners’ mind, is to filter out players who aren’t willing to compromise to fit in with the organization.
But it’s a stupid, out of touch way to do that, and it has been for a long time (even back when George was still alive). They should come up with better rules to achieve the same result.
In other words, allow facial hair, and ban things like:
– hitting your wife or girlfriend
– breaking the law
– doing PEDs
– being overweight
– disrespecting the game by acting out or not running to first
P.S. I’m not suggesting you should have a spotless track record, and no mistakes in your past. But there should be a clear commitment to these rules.
Piro
I predict Machado signs before Christmas.
Marius
I definitely think he will be picking his team by this wknd. When the contract is signed though, who knows.
stansfield123
Boras is probably the only agent willing to actually go for that kind of deal. It’s risky (Harper could lose 30-40% of his career earnings, if he underperforms), but it’s also the way to maximize his earnings if he plays well.
Btw., I don’t think it could ever be a short deal. But it could be something like 10 years, $300m, heavily front loaded, and with opt outs before each pay cut. For instance,
3 x $40M, opt-out, 2x 35M, opt out, 5x $22M.
That would guarantee $300m ($100M less than what he could probably get, if he signed an option-less contract that ends when he’s 39 or 40), but it would only keep him in the deal if he’s a total bust. If he plays any kind of decent baseball, he will almost certainly opt out before his pay is cut to $22M, and get more than that 5 years, $110M he’d have left.
And if he plays great for three years, he could end up with an extra $200M in three years (he’d be hitting free agency with Trout and Betts off the board, and signed to massive contracts).
DadsInDaniaBeach
he was already offered 10 and $300m..turned it down..shooting for close to 400m or over it..
I think he gets it too

“Realmuto will still be a Brave.”
Good lol. Gut your farm for a decent player who is massively over-hyped due to watered down catching talent throughout the league. JT reminds me of peak Mike Lieberthal which isn’t a bad thing but isn’t worth the talent they want either.
mlb1225
I mean, Realmuto isn’t just good because it’s a watered down catching market. But what does water down his value is the years left on his contract.
Knowthemarket
If the proposed package to get the guy is Soroka and Riley, you don’t want that. He only has two years left. I would rather wait to see if Contreras develops or another option turns up.
steelerbravenation
That’s who the Marlins want that’s not who they would get. Riley’s strikeout rate scares me. When Donaldson leaves after next year Camargo will slide back into 3rd. There comes a point in time when you decide to start making moves to go for it. By the time these young pitchers. AA just doesn’t move Contreras if Realmuto moves on in 2 yrs that’s his replacement and the Braves get a pick.
This team as it stands is not good enough to compete for a WS.
They get JT now and MadBum at the deadline
If we are in contention I see the Braves contenders. At some point in time you gotta stop hoarding prospects and waiting for them.
With all that being said I wouldn’t move Soroka & Riley it would be 1 or the other with another lower prospect or 2. If Jeter don’t want that than we got Flowers & McCann to work with.
And MadBum should net 1 Top 10 prospect at the deadline and maybe 1 more lower prospect. So 2 top 10 prospects from positions of strength to make a run at a WS. Who wouldn’t do that ? They would be crazy not to.
maxgjr
As a Marlins fan i wouldn’t mind trading Realmuto for Tucker, Alvarez, and some other lower rated prospect.
stretch123
They’d be better off targeting a Tucker and Josh James package or Alvarez in place of Tucker and throw in a piece like Armenteros
R-U-K-D-N-M-E
James is a flame thrower who is in the strike zone, he is young, controllable and cheap. He will not be traded, would be an incredibly bad move.
Calexander3
I would be SHOCKED if the package was Tucker AND Alvarez. Would be a steal for the Marlins. I Just want it done already…

Phillies management finally figured out that neither Machado or Harper can fix all of the glaring holes in their lineup.

Well they’ve certainly done a good job of augmenting the club so far so I’m not all that worried.

I think they more realized that neither of them was going to sign with the Phillies, and they’re trying to prepare the fanbase for them whiffing on all the FA’s they liked. Already missed out on Corbin and Happ, they know people are getting restless
PhanaticDuck26
they can’t sign everyone, Philsphan. how would you feel if they missed out on Machado because they paid too much for six years of Corbin? also, paying Happ till he’s 39? Our current in-house rotation options will be as good as Happ, if not better. The Phils are waiting for the right move (Machado) while slowly making other smaller moves to get better (segura, mccutchen). You cant just sign everyone to make noise.

Na’, I’m nobody’s momma, just a savvy baseball guy that has followed the game closely and played and managed the game since the 60’s. After watching previous Dodger GM’s trade away or lose iconic players like Martinez, Franco, Wetteland, Konerko, Santana, Beltre and Piazza for peanuts it’s been refreshing to see the new regime continue to make wise decisions. They took over an organization with a pedestrian minor league system and who had spent the least amount of money in mlb the previous year signing international players and established and are close to carrying out a master plan. They were able to remain competitive while restocking their minor league system by reluctantly accepting bad short term contracts like Josh Becket’s and Carl Crawford’s in order to land contributors like AGone. They spent big money in the international market, invested in scouting and development and refused to trade guys like Buehler, Seager, Bellinger and Urias. Instead of mistakenly trading the wrong guys they pilfered, claimed or cheaply signed others like Floro, Chargois, Wood, Hill, Turner, Toles, Grandal, Taylor, Utley, Morrow, Kike, Barnes and Cingrani. Now their restocked minor league system is producing award winning talent and their last burdensome contract (Kemp) is about to expire. Their roster simply doesn’t include a big money player from outside of players they’ve re-signed and they’re showing restraint by refusing to get contract tangled by Machado and Harper. So….again….I’m nobody’s mother and am pleased with the moves the new Dodger regime has made. Despite losing in the WS their master plan really hasn’t quite matured. Once Kemp’s contract expires and their kids fully develop this new regime will win their first championship.

About the only thing we know about the future of Harper is he won’t be in a soup line..Remember phans, it’s all about the Benjamin’s

Harper is asking for both the highest AAV in baseball and over 10 years. He will get both. Currently, Greinke has the highest AAV at $34.416 million. That puts a 10 year Harper deal at around $350 million. Some team is going to step up and give it to him. If it was my team I would give him a 14 year deal with the last 4 being team options. That way the AAV for CBT purposes is lower.

I heard today on our local sports radio, that the players are planning to strike in 2022, and that scenario could be why no team has offered Harper or Manny a long term contract? The teams are worried about paying these high prices and the fans not getting back involved in the sport for a few years afterwards and they don’t want to carry the player?? Anyone else hear this?? Your thoughts??

My thoughts? This is why you don’t listen to local sports radio when they have no actual news to discuss…
