Recent top Athletics draft pick Kyler Murray is most famous for his role as a standout quarterback at the University of Oklahoma, but he already inked a $4.66MM deal to join the Oakland organization over the summer. Some whispers have circulated that Murray could be enticed by the NFL draft, where he might also be a first-round talent, but agent Scott Boras largely shot down that idea in a chat today with Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
If Boras was not quite fully committing, he nevertheless did not leave much wiggle room for his client. “Kyler has every intention of fulfilling his agreement with the A’s,” said Boras, who adds that Murray “will be in Spring Training with the A’s” (as Fancred’s Jon Heyman indicated earlier this week, on Twitter).
That’s good news for the Oakland organization, which surprised many by taking Murray ninth overall. There is no questioning his immense athletic ability, of course, but the collegiate star is much more accomplished and polished on the gridiron — if only due to the fact that he has focused his attention to that higher-profile collegiate pursuit.
Notably, as Slusser explains, the A’s have a lot to lose if Murray changes his mind. While the club would get its money back, it wouldn’t receive a compensatory pick as occurs in situations where no agreement is consummated in the first place. As part of the initial deal with Murray, the Athletics organization agreed to allow him to finish out his career at OU.
Murray himself had raised a few eyebrows with recent comments in which he seemingly indicated there was still an opening for a football future. Certainly, his draft stock has risen after an immense season for the Sooners, though it still seems unlikely he’d be considered at the very top of the draft class due to his short stature. Regardless, Boras suggests that Murray’s words shouldn’t be parsed too closely. After all, he is being pressed with attention as he nears a potential Heisman Trophy.

I also have every intention of getting a six pack but that ain’t gonna happen

I drank a six pack just thinking about what to drink.

Leverage both if u can somehow. Life is sure and getting paid to play two games is a freaking dream and can make u a legend. You’ll make enough money to be set your entire life up front, so go for it
brandons-3
He doesn’t really have a lot of leverage. He got $4.66 million to play for the A’s. If he ultimately decides to play football, he wouldn’t get that money from Oakland on a risk that he’d be drafted high enough to make it up or more. Even if he never makes it to the professional ranks, nearly $5 million and your health in tack should make him comfortable for the rest of his life.
pjmcnu
$4.66M and your health is better than any amount of money and near-certain CTE.
Priggs89
If he’s smart with his money, he’s setup pretty well already.
zacharydmanprin
He still has a year of eligibility after this season, no? Is Boras just angling for the A’s to add to the already agreed upon deal? A Heisman bonus?
CCCTL
He technically has NCAA football eligibility, but not baseball. He’s accepted some of the signing bonus, the rest of which is being held in a trust until he reports to the minor leagues.
You can’t renegotiate a draft signing.
zacharydmanprin
“You can’t renegotiate…? Hold my beer.” – Scott Boras
sacball
there was a clause in his signing contract allowing him to play football this year and this year only. Afterwards, he’s strictly supposed to play for the A’s and forego the rest of his college career.
ffjsisk
He’s what, 5’6”? No way he gets more than 4.25mil from the NFL.
jordlindz
Dude play QB… in today’s NFL, you’re good…
jrwhite21
He’s 5’9”……future isn’t in football as a QB
Slevin
Take a look at a kid by the name of Russell Wilson.
Lefty Grove’s right hand
He is the exception. Few shorter than average quarterbacks succeed in the NFL.
sacball
Wilson’s 3 inches taller fwiw
thegreatcerealfamine
Russell Wilson is listed at 5’11, but has admitted he’s more like 5’10 1/2
jbigz12
And if Kyler Murray chose to go the NFL he’d end up getting paid like Dak Prescott or Russ Wilson for the first 3 years. Which is roughly the same as his signing bonus in Oakland. Add that in to the avg length of a NFL career and you’ve got yourself a bad gamble. He should play baseball and take a shot at some serious guaranteed cash. Though he does play the right position in football to get payed one day.
FromTheCheapSeats
Not true. Wilson and Prescott were mid round picks.
If Murray committed to football, he’d probably go first round. There’s no chance he’d fall very far into the second.
As good an athlete as Russell Wilson is, Kyler Murray is better. It’s been amazing how may people I’ve talked to this year that dismiss Kyler Murray but have never actually watched him play.
The kid is SPECIAL.
deal1122
Just a little curious here, but how is it that Murray is allowed to have an agent and still play in the NCAA? Is there a loophole somewhere that allows it?
bkwalker510
It’s different sports so it’s fine
pjmcnu
It’s got to be (1) a different sport, and (2) you can’t be on scholarship. You can pay your own tuition, etc., and play something else.
eeddiiee909
anyone know what his position is in baseball
CCCTL
Centerfield.
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
Hey, Charlie Ward won the Heisman and was never drafted by or played in the NFl.
bradthebluefish
That is so odd. Why is that?
jbigz12
Do you really not know brad? Hard to tell if it’s sarcastic or not. Charlie Ward was a NBA player in case you weren’t. Jason white won The Heisman at OU and never got a sniff at the Pros. Had bum knees and wasn’t a pro prospect at all. I don’t think Murray wins the heisman but if he does he won’t be the first to not step on the pro football field.

Way more earning potential in MLB, not to mention the risk to life long injuries is exponentially higher in the NFL. Being able to have some basic cognitive skills in your 40s comes in handy believe it or not.
Harry pness
the 32nd pick last year (Lamar Jackson) got 4 years and 9 million guaranteed. Chase Daniel has secured close to what 80 million as a backup qb. It really is a tough decision
jb19
No where near $80 million for Chase Daniel. Closer to $40 million.
Jeff Smardjza secured $100+ million and he’s got years of mediocrity left in him.
94' World Champs!
So Tom Brady’s has made about $200 million thru his age 41 season and Jason Heyward will have made the same amount thru his age 33 season.
Id love to see the average earnings and career length MLB vs NFL.
Harry pness
did you add off the field earnings? Pretty dumb comparison. Nfl players are more marketable. You might as well compare Jason heyward and tyler Johnson on the heat
ilikebaseball 2
MLB contracts are guaranteed, NFL is not. Average career of MLB is 5.6 years, NFL is 3.3 years. MLB minimum salary is 535K and the MLB average is 4.38 million. NFL minimum salary is 450k and the average is 2.1 million. This isn’t even taking into consideration the damage NFL does to the human body.
Its not a tough decision at all. Anyone with a decent agent and support system will go to MLB.
ilikebaseball 2
Biggest contract in NFL history 137.5 Million, Biggest in MLB expected to reach 400 million this offseason. There is no way to look at a career in the NFL and think it will be more lucrative and less damaging to your long term health over MLB.
pjmcnu
And I guarantee you that only part of the NFL record was guaranteed. Possibly a rather small part.
Harry pness
You guys are thinking Murray can become an elite mlb player. There’s a chance he plays 3 years in the minors and never makes it to the mlb level
jbigz12
That’s not completely apples to apples because what is the % of players that are drafted that go to the majors in baseball? Very very low. Much higher for 1st round picks such as Murphy but I don’t think those numbers truly capture the probability of earnings. The fact that baseball $$$ are guaranteed makes it a whole heck of a lot more appealing but a starting QB will get paid if he managed to make it there. If you’re talking about any other position on the football field aside from QB there’s really no argument to be made. However for a potential starting NFL QB there’s an argument that football could be more lucrative. Not saying I think Murray is the kind of QB prospect that it would hold true for.
Harry pness
My point exactly Jbigz. Playing QB is much more appealing now with the way the rules are headed. Very small probability of Murray reaching the mlb level, sustaining elite level, and earning a high contract. My point was when you make it to the nfl, teams will want you. You can be in the league for 10 years, make 2 starts and still make 30 million.
pjmcnu
But even those huge-sounding QB contracts are only partially guaranteed, so even that upside is not apples to apples and works in MLB’s favor.
jbigz12
Matt Ryan guaranteed 100 million. Kirk cousins just got a fully guaranteed 3 year deal. The guarantees on these QB deals are through the roof. These guys aren’t even really top 10 QBs. QBS get paid well. Any other position, I hear you.
Harry pness
Couple years ago the bears signed mike glennon for 3 years 45 million. Mike f****** Glennon. Made 4 starts and kept 18 million. That’s just one example
Priggs89
The problem with that is he’s not really the type of QB that’ll be around for 10 years and get paid big money to be a backup (obviously making the assumption he’s not successful as a starter).
That being said, he could very easily fail in the minors and never see another big payday playing baseball. If he’s focused on his health, baseball is a no brainer, but it’s a tough choice if he loves playing both equally.
batty
I’m biased in that i love MLB and barely tolerate the NFL, so i say report to the A’s camp and have fond memories of his college football days. As athletic as he is, if he can put the ball in play, he should have a fine career in baseball.
nuschler22
From an injury standpoint alone, it would be insane to chose football over baseball.
bradthebluefish
NFL = Not For Long
There is no minor league system for NFL players. There is no safety net. And the contracts aren’t guaranteed like MLB contracts are.
jbigz12
If his agent told him he was highly likely to be a 1st round pick at QB he’d secure at least 8 million bucks guaranteed. That’d double what he has for Oakland and the fact that there is a minor league system is no safety net. Those guys make less than a typical college grad working a desk job. Until he’s on the 40 man. all he has is that signing bonus. I don’t think he’s a good enough pro prospect for this to become a serious consideration but if he were a first round talent there’d certainly be a tough decision for him to make. QB’s make all the money in the NFL.
csspackler
He was taken 9th overall. He’s a terrific pro prospect.
jbigz12
Pro football prospect cmon guys do some thinking here.
pjmcnu
He went 9th overall & many pundits think he went that low because of the football issue. How on earth do you conclude he’s not a top prospect?
jbigz12
How do you conclude that I was talking about his baseball prospect status from what I wrote? I’m talking about his NFL draft prospects. He’s obviously a first round baseball talent as he was taken #9 overall.
Harry pness
If he’s a 1st round talent he’s definitely picking football
dust44
Ellsbury is collecting guaranteed money and hasn’t played a meaningful inning in 2 years. Baseball is def the way to go. Hell dudes that get hurt and can’t play again still get the rest of that contract. David Wright And Price Fielder for example
pjmcnu
Tough choice! Baseball (honor your commitment, $4.66M, guaranteed contracts in MLB, happy, healthy retirement) or football (break your word, don’t go in the 1st rd because ur 5-10, non-guaranteed contracts where the team can cut you every year [but you have to play it out] for a pittance of a buyout unless you negotiate SOME guaranteed money so that even 7 year/ $210M contracts are really 1 year deals for the team (for the cut $ or your guarantee, NOT $210M), retire with CTE). Hmmmm…whatever should he do?
Harry pness
He sounded like football is his favorite out of the two sports with the interview with Tebow. He realizes as an nfl qb, it’s almost impossible to be successful at his height. However Russell Wilson faced similar circumstances
Harry pness
Plus as a qb in 2018 you don’t get hit. If a player touches them it’s an automatic ejection. You must not watch the nfl that much
astros_fan_84
Most QBs his size flop in the NFL. There are exceptions.
Obviously, plenty of baseball prospects flop as well.
It’s a personal preference. At the same time, I think the biggest guarantee is Boras. He’s not involved in the NFL. If Murray changes sports, Boras makes no money.
Priggs89
I’m sure he’ll survive without the comish he gets from Murray’s $4.66M signing bonus…
jbigz12
In the grand scheme of things boras does not care about Murray and his 4.64 million bucks. If the kid had a legitimate shot to go in the first round in the NFL draft I don’t think Boras would advise him not to.
