Following last month’s non-tender of Jonathan Schoop, the Brewers’ exhaustive, months-long search for a second baseman continues with the team’s pursuit of Jed Lowrie, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Lowrie, of course, is fresh off an outstanding, 4.9 fWAR 2018 season with Oakland, itself on the back almost identical offensive campaign (119 wRC+ in ’17, 122 in ’18) the year before. MLBTR projects the 34-year-old to earn a solid 3-year, $30MM deal this offseason, though Lowrie’s camp, given his recent two-year output, will surely be fighting for more. The risk with the switch-hitter lies in his subpar performance across multiple seasons (2011, ’14, ’15, and ’16), in obvious addition to his age and former propensity for the serious injury, plus the tendency of second basemen to decline earlier than most, but there could be surplus value aplenty to be found if he continues on his current trajectory.
In other news from around the NL …
- The Nationals, another team with a hole at the keystone, offered Ian Kinsler a one-year deal before the 36-year-old signed a two-year pact with San Diego, per Rosenthal. Earlier this week, the club was said to have “checked-in” with free agent second-sacker D.J. LeMahieu, who would likely command a deal in excess length to the one offered to Kinsler, so it seems unclear as to exactly which direction the club will go in terms of filling the position. Carter Kieboom, a 21-year-old middle-infield prospect, has raked in the low levels of the minors and may just be a season and a half or so away, so perhaps the club is seeking just a one- or two-year stopgap in the interim.
- Per Alex Pavlovic of NBA Bay Area, the outfield-naked Giants are interested in Blue Jays CF Kevin Pillar. The club, who in years past has shown little interest in staking a defense-first player at the position, despite its park’s huge territory in right-center field, may be undergoing a philosophical about-face under its new, analytics-driven regime. The club, of course, is stacked with right-handed fly-ball types in the rotation, and would seem to benefit in large measure from a ball-hawking center-fielder like Pillar. The 29-year-old’s defensive metrics took a bit of a hit last season, but his peak from ’15-’17 (50 DRS) has rarely been matched in recent times. 25-year-old Steven Duggar would seem, at least in part, to fit the bill, but whether or not his bat will play – Steamer projects an 81 wRC+ for ’19 – is still an open question.
- New Dodgers reliever Joe Kelly, who this week agreed to a 3-year, $25MM with the team, explained (audio version) to WEEI’s Rob Bradford why he chose LA, noting that the team was the first to extend its offer to three years. Though the duration may come as little surprise, it is notable that it came from the Dodgers, who in recent times (Kenley Jansen excluded) have preferred their relievers to be of the under-the-radar variety.

I’ve no real idea what the Giants are doing and the rumors aren’t of much help. They definitely need a CFer that can cover lots of ground and has a good, or better, arm. But they’ve gotta get some offense from that position as well. That’s where Pillar seems to fall short. He lacks in the OBP department pretty significantly and he’ll lose some of what little power he has going from the Jays to the Giants.
arc89
They don’t have much in trade assets so there is not a lot they can do. Sign a few mid range free agents but to many bad long term contracts on the payroll. Freeing themselves of a high contract would serve them best.
coldbeer
Pillar would be potentially good in a platoon with Duggar at a cheap acquisition cost. His splits against lefties would balance well.
JayRyder
Would balance very well. . . For what they can get. And for what they need… A vet who can cover center with more of a track record. Right handed. Everything Austin Jackson wasn’t last year. . . Defense is sound with this guy too. And he adds to moving parts, I believe there are more on they way if they get him… We’ll see…….
its_happening
Kevin Pillar plays hard. He has been written off as a nobody from the day he was drafted. Blue Jays organization had numerous players slated ahead of Pillar, from Colby Rasmus to Anthony Gose to Dalton Pompey. All thought to be superior centrefielders and none measured up with either defensive skill or heart.
Pillar’s weakness is hitting, and he does chase balls out of the zone at times. Achilles heel. If you can tolerate that from an 8-hole hitter and hope for strong defense, Pillar is your guy.

The Giants has a chance at Billy Hamilton,
Speedy lead off, low cost if anything. Missed opportunity

terrible lead off guy, your lead off by needs to get on base, his obp is crap
Jean Matrac
Billy Hamilton is the perfect example of a guy not fulfilling his potential. All he needed to do was be able to get on base at a reasonable rate. He never could. Speed sitting on the bench is useless. Not a missed opportunity at all.
sacball
Billy Hamilton would have been the worst move the Giants could have made

Brewers’ Keon Broxton. Plus Domingo Santana.
stubby66
Ok the Brewers should just go with Huira and Dubon splitting time between AAA and the majors. If they struggle they could always move Shaw back to second and try Erceg at third, plus we still have Perez and Saladino too. After that can we please trade Broxton and Santana to San Francisco for Will Smith and a low minor leaguer plus to be nice give Giants Thames just because.
stubby66
Plus before some of you guys RIP on my ideas let’s just remember at least I fell off the Nate Orf wagon lol
steelerbravenation
Actually don’t think it’s a bad idea at all I don’t think you get both those OF but some sort of package deals involving Smith & Santana I think works.
brewcrewer
Yeah…orf didn’t quite work out. I think lowrie would be a perfect guy to fill in until hiura is ready. Having him on the bench later on sure would be nice.
mikeyst13
Neither Ergec nor Hiura are ready yet. Mid-season call ups maybe, but neither has been above AA and the organization has said that they both need more time. Dubon could play 2B, but he’s still rehabbing from his knee injury and may not even be up to full game speed by Opening Day. They need someone to serve as a bridge.
nubbz18
Huira will be a June call-up only because we want an extra year of control on him. Calling it now, he’s 2019’s Juan Soto, he’ll mash this season
steelerbravenation
I wonder what kinda deal could be made if/when this Braves Realmuto trade goes through this week as predicted.
Braves have Flowers & Teheran who both could be of help to the Brewers. Or I wonder if Atlanta would keep 3 catchers which I personally don’t want. With the catchers market the way it is I believe Flowers would have a lot of value in the trade market.
xabial
Brewers should have tried trading for Neil Walker 😉
Maybe now they’ll sign him to be their regular 2B
Strange, 2B is a position that seems to have more supply than demand, this off-season.
Central Valley
Mr. Zaidi has his hands full fixing the Giants. Their last regime, with the ownerships blessing, really screwed that team up for atleast the next couple of years.
Sky high payroll committed to old, unproductive players that get injured about every 10 minutes. 2018 was another year with not one single player with 20 homeruns. Meanwhile, the Dodgers, If I remember correctly had 8 players with 20 homeruns. Farm system is trash. No outfield talent whatsoever, etc etc.
The Giants window shut closed in 2016 and that’s when I wish Mr. Zaidi was hired. I look forward to seeing his magic fixing this team. Go Giants! Will always be my team!
xabial
I believe Mr. Zaidi was the right hire. I always get made fun of (attacked) for being too positive, but five year deal, he will be able to mold the team into his own image. The best part of hire is SF’s budget.
Btw, I always make fun of the LAD for choking WS away (x2) but there’s something to be said about making back-to-back WS.
It’s going to be sad when Bochy leaves after 2019, but all good things must come to an end. The dude still HOF and you SF fans are lucky to witness 3x WS Rings in such a short span that most fans don’t witness in their lifetime.
Central Valley
Bochy is a class act and am grateful for the 3 WS championships. It will definitely be sad to see him ride off into the sun set, but it’s time. It’s a different game today. Plus, Bochy’s health would be better off if he retired. Great man.
custardflan
i like Murphy better. Better hitter.
Nevrfolow
2.5 years of terrible baseball and the Giants probably have 3 more years of sub 500 ball ahead of them. This is going to be some rough years.
GoSoxGo
Why do Second basemen “decline earlier than most”? Can you offer some examples of decline compared with the decline of other position players?
impapad57
Why did the name Dan Ugg’s just pop into my head?
impapad57
Why did the name Dan Uggla just pop into my head?
Jean Matrac
Not sure it’s fair to say the previous Giant’s management was indifferent to CF defense. They were ready to go with Duggar last season and he’s the epitome of a glove first guy.
BasebaII1600
Giants should be in play for younger OFers. Will Smith for Tyler O’Neil should happen.
Central Valley
Younger outfielders that can hit. Mr. Zaidi will fix their outfield, I’m confident.
BasebaII1600
Tyler O’Neil for Will Smith, Christian Pache+ for Bumgarner and call it an offseason.
grapher0315
I don’t believe the Braves would trade Pache even up for one year of Bumgarner, much less Pache plus.
BasebaII1600
Then let the Braves walk in to the 2019 postseason with Folty as their best starter and exit in the first round. Fine by me.
grapher0315
I could see the Braves trading one of their pitching prospects for Bumgarner if they are unable to get a better TOR pitcher, but Bumgarner is not as good as he was years ago. Certainly still a good pitcher, but more like a 2 or 3.
Vedder80
You won’t get O’Neil for Watson either.
Redwolves3
Kershaw? Hasn’t he declined but the Dodgers saw the real value in resigning Kershaw to an extension. Kershaw will retire as a Dodger.
MadBum is still the ace of the Giants staff. No one else is close. And the Giants should resign MadBum just like the Dodgers did Kershaw.
And, MadBum should retire as a Giant.
steelerbravenation
Giants really are missing the boat on Bumgarner
I am not just saying this because I am an ATL fan but they should really try to pull A SP & Pache for him
Pache could solidify CF defense in that ballpark for a long time. He is only going to climb prospect ranking in the coming years to the point of untouchable Imo
BasebaII1600
Depends on what AA wants to do. If he wants to keep on losing in the first round because of no legitimate starting pitching, let him hang on to Pache. If he wants to have a chance at a WS, send Pache and a lower-tier SP for Bumgarner. Simple.
Central Valley
Madison Bumgarner will be an absolute stud next year. The contending teams will be begging Mr. Zaidi to trade Bumgarner and will offer multiple top prospects for him. The trade deadline will be when Bumgarner is traded. There is still not a single pitcher in baseball that shows up more when it matters more that MadBum. Atlanta, Milwaukee and Houston will be pushing hard for a trade. Count on it.
sfgiants1
I agree. Someone on Bleacher Report the other day said he’s not worth top prospects because he’s old and injury prone. Lol he’s 29 and had 2 freak accidents. To be honest if they don’t get a boatload for him I’d rather watch him another year in SF.
Crankyolddude
Pache & Touki for MadBum seems like a fair trade for both sides…
sfgiants1
I’m not familiar with the Braves farm system. However if we dealt Bum I’d like him going there. He’s from Hickory, NC and grew up rooting for them so that would be cool……For him. Lol
odogfenway
Not gonna lie…never heard of a second-sacker before…maybe a genital deformity?
sfgiants1
It always cracks me up reading that the Giants are too “old” and have a poor farm and high payroll. The “old” players were mostly home grown and even then they always had a “bad farm.” The contracts really aren’t that bad aside from Melancon and Samardzija. Pence made too much the last two years of his deal but he was pretty important to two titles so he deserved it. Cueto is worth 20 million hands down. He got hurt, it happens. Posey, Crawford, Belt, and Longoria all have market value deals and they had down years, it happens. They are all in the 2nd half of their “primes” but they could quite possibly all bounce back and have great years in 2019. What the Giants NEED is a Power bat in LF and some speed on the bases. I like the idea of Pillar in RF or as a platoon in CF. They could trade Panik to fill a hole in the OF. Sign a decent Starter to compete like Fiers or the guy from Japan. I like the idea of trading Smith and Watson to fill holes too. Maybe try to pay someone with cash and/or prospects to take Samardzija and Melancon. This team isn’t all that far off and they’re not as old as people make them out to be. Posey is like 5 years younger than Yadier Molina! Longoria is a year younger than Turner in LA. Nobody calls them old. The problem on this team is the OF. It has been since 2015. Hell even our WS teams had average or less OF’s. I’m not saying we’re in ideal shape, but a creative GM could take the foundation we have and build a contender. So to recap trade Panik, Watson, Smith for starters in the OF. Sign the Japanese starting pitcher. Try to do whatever it takes to dump Samardzija and Melancon.
brewcrewer
One thing you gotta consider though is that “old” is relative for baseball players. some guys get old quicker than others. Longoria is much “older” aka closer to the end of his career than Turner. Most of the currant Giants are all aging quicker, and I think they are pretty far away from giving it a serious run.
sfgiants1
I disagree. Longoria had a pretty solid season actually. My point was that they’re actually not an “old” team. They’re a veteran team sure, but they just need youth to mix in with what they have. I watch literally every Giants game. They aren’t as bad as they’re made out to be.
mikeyst13
3rd oldest team in the league by average age. Pretty sure that qualifies them as being called an old team.
sfgiants1
Well Hunter Pence is 35, he’s gone. Gregor Blanco is 34, he’s gone. Hunter Strickland is gone, Gorkys Hernandez is gone. Samardzija should be gone, he’s 33. Melancon should be gone, he’s 33. Pablo Sandoval is 33. So yeah there are some guys that bring up the age that are gone or should be gone, but the core group isn’t “old” the Giants just need an influx of youthful players to balance it out. It isn’t rocket science.
Bubba 5
Kinsler how much money do you need. Ummm signing with the Padres or going to Washington?? Don’t tell me about “ all their talent” either. Preller doesn’t have a clue. The Nats minus Harper are a better “ team”. Not a Nats fan either just a realist.
chevyheston
Will never forget Kinsler stepping to the plate in one of his first 2018 postseason at-bats and play-by-play guy noting that Kinsler “rarely strikes out.” Not only did he strike out in that at-bat, he went on to strike out 13 more times and led the Sox in postseason k’s.. Also had lowest OBP on the team. And who can forget his baserunning in game 3?
Read: bye bye Kinsler.
