Although the Athletics contacted the Yankees about right-hander Sonny Gray at least a week ago, “there is no present momentum in talks” between the teams, Jon Morosi of MLB.com tweets. A return to Oakland would represent a homecoming of sorts for Gray, a 2011 first-round pick of the A’s who mostly thrived with the club from 2013-17. The A’s dealt Gray to the Yankees in July 2017 for a bounty of prospects, but he has since looked like a poor fit in the Bronx, leading general manager Brian Cashman to concede that “it’s probably best” for the Bombers to move the 29-year-old this winter. Gray’s down to his final season of team control, in which he’ll earn a projected $9.1MM. Even for a low-budget team like Oakland, $9MM-plus for Gray doesn’t look like an unreasonable figure. Gray pitched like a front-end starter away from Yankee Stadium last year, after all, so he could boost an A’s rotation which is clearly in need of help.
More on the Yanks, all of which comes via Bryan Hoch of MLB.com:
- Infielder Manny Machado infamously told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic last month that being “Johnny Hustle” isn’t his “cup of tea.” Considering he was then on the brink of a much-anticipated, highly lucrative trip to free agency, Machado’s remarks came at an inopportune time. And now that Machado is on the open market – where he still figures to rake in a historic payday – Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner addressed the superstar’s comments this week, calling them “troubling” and noting that the club would need to discuss them with the 26-year-old as part of a serious pursuit. To this point, though, the Yankees and Machado haven’t set up a meeting, Cashman revealed Thursday. The executive added that the Yankees have used past meetings with free agents to “educate people about who we are and where we want to go and get a feel back if there’s an alignment there, if that player can fit in our culture and our New York environment or not. There’s times I’ve walked away refreshingly, feeling strongly about, ’I’m glad he was so candid because this is not going to be a good fit.'”
- The Yankees are at risk of losing high-profile relievers David Robertson and Zach Britton to free agency, though they have spoken to both hurlers about re-signing, Cashman said. The 33-year-old Robertson, a Rhode Island resident, would like to pitch for a team in the Northeast, according to Cashman. “Does he want to come back? Yeah, but he said the same thing to me that he said to the public — he’s got to do what is in the best interests of his family,” Cashman said of Robertson, who’s acting as his own agent. “He’s looking for the best deal he can get. He must have already went to agent school; that’s normally the first thing you hear. There must be a playbook.”
- Free agency and the trade market are likely the primary concerns for the Yankees right now, but they’ll also consider offseason extensions for some of their current players, per Cashman. Three of their top contributors – center fielder Aaron Hicks, shortstop Didi Gregorius and reliever Dellin Betances – are each scheduled to become free agents a year from now, but perhaps the Yankees will prevent one or more of them from reaching the market. “Is it something that’s on the list of things to talk to and walk through and get to? Yes,” Cashman stated in regard to potential extensions for the trio. “I wouldn’t rule anything out. Have we kicked it around in a very small scale way in the offices? Like, it’s now or never? Yeah, we have.”

I’d say Boston is closer to Rhode Island than New York.

Yankees and Red Sox are rivals. To suggest you are a fan of both teams is to say you are a fan of the arch rival of the other team. No true fan would ever be. So who did you cheer for when the Yankees played the Red Sox this past October?
bababooeytoyall
That is so not true. You can root for more than one team. Hell. I love 29 teams in THE MLB. I guess the only exception are the Red Sox!
WubbaLubbaDubDub

@MutsYankeesRedSawx
The word “fan” is derived from fanatic. If one was indeed a “fan” of the Yankees, it’s virtually impossible to feel the same way about the Muts.
Same for Red Sawx and the Yankees.
Interesting you admit to becoming enamored of the Red Sawx in 1967. I’ll wager you began to favor the Muts in ‘69, as well. This makes you a bandwagon jumper.
You can claim to have any number of favored teams but to be truly fanatical—and hence a fan—you simply cannot feel the identical way about each of such historical rivals. By it’s very nature, that would mean you just don’t care which most favored team wins when playing each other. Intense dislike of your teams traditional, or cross town, rival is part of being a true “fanatic” of any team. To claim otherwise is just wishy-washy and a lack of caring is apathy. One simply cannot be apathetic about something yet claim a it to be among your favorites. That’s not just a contradiction, it’s hypocritical, as well.

Trade Betances for Schwarber, Trade Bird and Voit for Gallo, Trade Andujar, Frazier, Sheffield, Stephens, Gray, and Torres for Bumgarner, Longoria, and Crawfors. If they cant get MadBum w/o Torres, replace Longoria for Crawford

Ok keep Torres, Gray, and Frazier. If this happened my bet is on MadBum to win the Cy Young and Bryce Harper to easily contend for the triple crown, only to lose in a 1-0 wildcard game defeat against the Seattle Mariners and their hometown hero Tim Lincecum.

Frazier, Florial and Sheffield for Bumgarner is the trade the Giants accept.

You’re gonna need alot more than a 1 for 1 for Schwarber. It would start with severino. Bentances would be a last minute throw in.
justin-turner overdrive
lmao
Sk8rboi
No not true. Vubs need a bullpen horse and I believe Schwarber is expendable on a National League team. Hes no longer the type of player he was hyped up at following the futures game. Cubs don’t need Severino. They need to find a way to trade a starter not add one Kyle Hendricks is probably the one who gets moved. I vet a lot of teams wpuld wznt him but finding the right trade is the hard part.
justin-turner overdrive
Thing is though….Schwarber is not good, at all – lol!!!
Sk8rboi
Did you see Betances??

ChiSoxCity
I find your lack of baseball knowledge or common sense… alarming. Why would the Cubs trade Hendricks?
sam 17
You’re not getting Schwarber for 1 year of Betances.
Sk8rboi
Because they have a bunch of starters and Hendricks basically cost them their season. Trade him now while his value is good. Lester Hamels Quintana Darvish Edwards Jr/Montgomery/Chatwood. They sign Marwin Gonzalez. Trade Hendricks and Russell in a package.
JKB 2
How did Hendricks cost the Cubs their season?
Ry.the.Stunner
@Sk8rboi – you have some of the most awful trade suggestions I’ve ever seen. Hendricks didn’t cost them their season, their anemic bipolar offense did. And why the hell would you throw Edwards Jr. into the rotation when he’s never started a game in his entire MLB career?
JKB 2
You are not getting Severino for Schwarber let alone starting with Schwarber. Wow
Chris
Laughable is the kindest word I can use to describe this idea
champion1701
Ignorant is what I use to describe “sk8rboi”, someone obviously over values the Yankees.
Sk8rboi
Over-values the Yankees? Im coming off my World Series hangover. These are just good trades. Yankees need another Homerun/Strikeout guy. They could use the prototypical DH. Birds value is gone and Voit is not producing again so trade them for Gallo who can convert to 1B and watch him crank 60 in Yankee Stadium. Bird btw would become an allstar being out of NY media. Betances can be a sign and trade. They overuse him anyways. MadBums the starter they need. I forgot to mention they should sign Happ too over Corbin. Happ although much older has the experience in the AL East and against Boston especially.
newyorkyankee7
Dum dedum dum!
JKB 2
Another silly trade proposal
southbeachbully
I hear Michael Kay emphatically swear that the Yanks are in on Machado but completely not interested in Harper. I’m calling it now. The Yankees will sign Harper to be their LF.
No way you can expect me to believe that the Yanks ask Gardner to take a pay cut after one of his worst seasons AND expect him to be their starter or even platoon partner with Frazier in 2019. I just can’t see the Yanks staying pat with either for 2019,
With Didi out the Yanks have three lefty bats on the roster and they’re Gardner, Ellsbury and the switch-hitting Hicks. How people can claim they need Manny more than Harper is mind boggling. And let’s be absolutely honest, Harper is MUCH MUCH more marketable right now than Manny. It’s a clear match.
billysbballz
I agree with you!
jdgoat
And Bird
southbeachbully
I expect Bird to start the year in AAA. He needs to play everyday. Honestly, Voit earned the right to be the starting 1B. He’s a viable option until he proves himself otherwise.
1,015 OPS vs RHP and 1..169 vs LHP
.953 OPS at home and 1.177 OPS on the road.
Sign a D. Murphy or N. Walker as a back up. Let Voit show you who he is. Let Bird get his swing right in AAA.

I believe it’s in the Yankees best interest to trade Andujar and pieces for pitching and sign Machado to takeover 3rd. I think Andujar is a great player but I don’t ever see him being Manny Machado with the bat or at the hot corner. If they wanna go all in and sign Harper too, it’s not my money and I’m not gonna cry about it
Adam6710
If they could do that, fine, but I wouldn’t sell Andujar short. He’ll never be Machado with the glove, but he can come close to the same offensive output for a fracrtion of the price, at least in the short term, freeing them up to sign a free agent pitcher just as easily as moving him for him.
That said, if you can get a bonafide ace for a package of Andujar/Frazier/Adams+, you do that in a heartbeart.
iverbure
Nobody is questioning Andujar with the bat. The guy can flat out hit, it’s his defence. And before you say we’ll just move him to DH or 1b, well than you decrease his value.
For me Andujar is still valueable to a lot of teams especially non contenders. They can stick him at 3rd everyday and really work on his d. If his d cost you a game or two, oh well you aren’t trying to win right now anyway. Machado Landing spot to me has always been NY, so if Andujar by himself or with others brings back a frontline starter than I make the moves. Paxton Kluber Greinke Syndergaard all the types of guys with multiple yrs of control. I wouldn’t move andujar for any rental. Even Greinke, if I’m giving up Andujar D-Backs are picking up a huge chunk of his deal.
InPolesWeTrust
Great point on the marketing but the Boogie Down Bronx loyalists would love some Mannywood 2.0. He’s gonna be a star in NY until he acts like Mannywood 1.0 and he becomes a malcontent. Oh it will be great theater.
Yankeepride88
I think a better fit would be Michael Brantley. Rotate him in and out of DH to hopefully keep him healthy
driftcat28 2
Do the opposite of what Michael Kay says
justin-turner overdrive
Jorge Mateo for Sonny Gray
Austin Beck, Dustin Fowler, Grant Holmes and Frankie Montas for Corey Kluber (A’s take all money)
Parker Dunshee, Brian Howard, Sheldon Neuse and/or Eli White, for Zack Greinke & $20 and/or 30M depending on how many prospects going back.
Then sign Maldonado, Suzuki and let Murphy hit his way onto the team. Boom. A perfect offseason.
It’s wild to think those aren’t -too- far off reality. You can add and sub a part or two out, but those deals are totally fair market value and help the Indians win in ’19 with Montas and Fowler. A’s hitting 2019 with Kluber-Grienke-Fiers-Gray-Mengden is certainly a postseason rotation, and the A’s brass has said many times they are ready to spend. I dunno what do you all think???
nste23
I don’t see them getting Greinke
billysbballz
Why would Yanks trade Gray for Mateo? I don’t think Indians do that Kluber deal either.
Slevin
Neither would happen.
justin-turner overdrive
Because if the Yankees have any weakness, they are extremely weak on MI depth at AAA. If Gleyber got hurt what do you do? Better to have Mateo than some AAAA scrub.
I know the Indians deal might need Lazarito instead of Beck, right? I like Montas and Fowler in 2019 though, they might not skip a beat if that deal goes down.
southbeachbully
Yanks have Torreyes, Wade and Estrada at AAA amd Holder at AA. I wouldn’t say they are weak. Between all mentioned, Torreyes has proven to have the best bat/glove at this point.

Maybe I’m just a biased Indians fan, but that proposal for Kluber is comically bad. Four spare parts won’t get it done.
Any offer from the A’s would probably have to start with Murphy and either Puk or Luzardo, with another lesser piece or two as well. The Indians don’t have a reason to take any less.
justin-turner overdrive
Except Fowler, those aren’t “spare parts” though, and Fowler is ready to be an everyday CF in 2019 – something the Indians need. Beck has been deemed totally off limits and Montas put up good MLB numbers this year. Holmes is a wild card but then again, Kluber’s contract makes him not as valuable in a trade.
You need to realize that paying $51M for Kluber means you aren’t going to get a teams best prospects, this isn’t a team going after a young cheap star, in which case I’d be with you, Puk or Luzardo would be in for Kluber if Kluber was making like $5M a year, so yeah, not happening ….unless the Indians pay some of that, which they won’t.
jbigz12
Kluber is on a 3/46 that’s about 50 million under what Kluber is worth for the next 3 years. On top of that you’re only locked in to him for 3 years so you don’t have to give him an insane 5 or 6 year deal into his late 30’s like he would get if he were a FA today. That deal is so far under market value it isn’t funny. If you don’t see that I’m sorry JT. Kluber’s contract makes him extremely valuable. You’re paying for J.A. Happ and getting Corey Kluber.
arc89
Gray is not going to Oakland because that would mean Cashman taking a big hit in the newspapers. Oakland would need to over pay to get him back. Cashman will still get good value out of Gray since almost every team is short of starting pitching.

The fan was incensed that I rated Bauers so low, as if not realizing (a) there is LITTLE chance that Bauers ever gets to be Mooreland and (b) Mooreland is some kind of left-over, instead of the better than league average player he is.
Most fans view their prospects that way. Too much Baseball America, too much Stickles, too much mlb.pipeline. Take the entire Prospect Handbook of 900 players and 30 will be stars, 400 will be “meh” and the rest will never see a MLB park unless they buy a ticket.
There’s about 2 prospects in each org I wouldn’t trade (maybe 3 in the better ones) , but everybody else is just trade capital. The standard for winning is THIS YEAR, not some mythical future.

My early offseason thoughts: I think it’s smart to look into an extension with Didi and Hicks. Could be the right time to get them at a premium (the Robinson Cano extension comes to mind). I’d love to see an outfield of Frazier, Hicks, Judge/Stanton for years to come. Iffy on a Manny signing, Manny to Third and Andujar to First? And most importantly, the Yanks NEED AN ACE
Rich Hill’s Elbow
No way Oakland gets Gray back with out at least paying exactly what they got back for him, it may not be fair, but that’s how the New York rolls. Besides, it’s probably for the best that Oakland trades for someone like Jake Odorizzi, who’d probably only cost Yerdel Vargas and Oscar Tovar.
Jean Matrac
If NY thinks they have a chance to get the same package back they’re delusional. That’s how they roll? Ridiculous. It’s all about leverage and current value. When Gray was traded his value was high and the A’s had leverage. The Yanks were looking for pitching at the deadline so they overpaid.
Gray’s value is down, and being the off-season, and not the deadline, the Yanks lack the leverage to get a huge return. If they expect a similar package to what they traded to get him, Gray will be a Yankee next season, because no one is overpaying for Gray.
billysbballz
Maybe he means the same players back?
Lol
Because the same prospects (specifically Mateo and Kaprilean) have also lost value. Fowler is not getting sent back. I would take Mateo and Kappy back as a redo.
driftcat28 2
I too would be happy to get Mateo and Kap back. Fowler would be icing on the cake. If Cashman could pull that off some how I would 100% expect Hicks to be traded for a SP and Fowler slides into CF
justin-turner overdrive
Ok so you think my Gray-Mateo trade is absolutely wrong, but you merely added in Kap and now it’s good to go? Why not just say “Add Kap in there and you have a deal” instead of saying “stop trolling never happening youre an idiot etc”
Dude, YOU stop trolling. It’s a waste of time. My original post asked nicely what people thought and all I got called was an idiot because fanboys like you cannot stand being told what reality is. I know the trade market better than any poster in these threads and almost on the level of the staff on this site. Knowing baseball pays my bills. Yes I know more than the average joe and have been watching the trade markets for decades and understanding the trends and how players are valued. Going “waaahhh i dont like that trade return because it doesnt have your best players for my expensive ones” is just sour grapes and you dont need to get mad, you need to sit back and watch the trades happen, then analyze.

Let me ask you this. One and a half years ago you traded Fowler kap and Mateo for sonny gray. In a year and a half you believe sonny gray has only been worth Fowler? The A’s will just give you the other 2 back? After gray got booted from your rotation because he wasn’t up to par? Mateo for gray would be fair. I doubt he goes back to Oakland for the same players he dealt away but perhaps they could find some common ground on other prospect/s.

CLKR sorry but that is not how Oakland or any team rolls. NYY made a bad trade for Gray. Period. They do not get back exactly what they paid?!
Sorry dude NO REFUNDS! Too comical to think they get a refund and to boot they return Gray who now only has one year left compared to multiple years when NYY bought on him but now they can return the used and washed up version for a full refund? Hahaha

Gray for Thames is fair & realistic
Or
Gray for Panik is fair & Realistic
getright11
You could get more for Gray. Thames blows. Gray is a SP who only blows in NY.
aussiegiants53
I might be smoking the green stuff but would a MadBum, Panik, Strickland and Melancon for Frazier, Florial, Abreu, Loisiga and Ellsbury work? Giants take on some cash to get some prospects into the system, Yanks get a SP, a 2B they need and 2 decent relief arms? Or am I way off here ?

For all the Yankees gave up for sonny gray they will never get anything close. I would keep him. Let him work out his problems. He is still a great pitcher. I read the Yankees were messing with his pitch selection leave him alone let him pitch.
slider32
It’s all about the 9 million, the team that takes the most money will get him, Yanks have moved on from him. Cashman wants the extra money, it would give him 60 million to spend.. Corbin- 20, Happ 15, Robby 10, Kinzler 10.
driftcat28 2
There’s no time to let him figure out his problems. This is a championship window and Gray cost the team a lot of wins this past season. He’s the right pitcher for a rebuilding team or a team with much better SP where they can absorb his hits. Plus he’s only bad in NY for some reason

Describing the Gray trade as costing a “bounty” is short memory, and not accurate. At the time, Yankee and other fans couldn’t believe that the best remaining SP on the market (a young one who seemingly had rebounded after a tough year) could be had for a trio of IMPERFECT prospects.
Two of them, Fowler and Kaprielian, were hurt at the time, with Fowler having suffered a bad knee injury and Kaprielian going through TJS. To little surprise, Fowler seemingly hasn’t come fully back yet, and Kaprielian has yet to pitch.
As for Mateo, he always had the look of an “all speed, no hit” sort of prospect, and had even struggled in high-A ball that same year. But the Yankees milked 30 small sample/good performance games into peak value for Mateo, who after the season dropped back off. He looks like another speedster who will struggle to find an everyday role due to being unable to get on base consistently.
That’s a “bounty”? It’s not as if the return has gotten worse since the deal…that’s pretty much what it looked like at the time.
justin-turner overdrive
Mateo is #7 and Kap is #9 on the A’s current top 30 prospects list on MLB.com, so yes, that is a bounty, and no, you really should not be judging or grading any of those players yet.
It was considered a bounty because Mateo had been the Yankees #1 prospect at one point, being that the typical Yankees hyping their overrated prospects to make them look better than they for trades happened. And Kap was seen as a MLB-ready talent before he got hurt, as was Fowler.
Fowler’s 2018 was spent coming back from knee injury, those take time to fully heal and midway thru 2018 it looked like he figured out AAA enough to where he should be an everyday CF for some team in 2019 (Laureano made him expendable, so prob not Oakland).
Mateo struggled at AAA for the first time, it happens, he was never a true #1 certified blue chip prospect, but he’s 23 with 80 speed and has shown enough interesting skills that a breakout in 2019 could easily happen.
I think for some bizarre reason people thought all 3 would be in Oakland in 2018? That was never going to happen. The trade was still a haul no matter what happened in 2018 tho.
JKB 2
I agree with Justin Turner. The trade was a haul for sure. RedSox post pointed out Fowler and Kap were hurt but then he tries to make it like those two should be stars now. No JTO is correct. No one thought that would happen in 2018. But all three are young enough that it may. In exchange they lost Gray who has been a bust in NY
jd396
Did I read this correctly, Robertson might want to return to NY, *but* he wants to be somewhere in the northeast close to Rhode Island?
hockeyjohn
Justin, 2016 does not mean a thing in late 2018 preparing for 2019. On November 0f 2018 Holmes is NOT a top 50 prospect on any list. By the way kid, I know how to read as I am a teacher with a college master’s degree. Perhaps next year you will move on to middle school. Read all the comments on your post. No one is agreeing with you. Perhaps you need to improve your reading comprehension.

How far off would a Wacha for Gray swap be?
jbigz12
Why do it? STL has so many options. I think it’s probably a pretty even swap but I don’t see any sense for STL to do it
