The White Sox have decided not to tender a contract to outfielder Avisail Garcia, GM Rick Hahn told reporters including MLB.com’s Scott Merkin (via Twitter). He was projected by MLBTR & Matt Swartz to earn $8.0MM in arbitration.
Meanwhile, the Chicago club has reached agreement to avoid arbitration with Leury Garcia, Hahn added. He’ll earn $1.55MM, per Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune (via Twitter), which lands well shy of the $1.9MM that was projected.
More to come …
PickleRiccck
He will sign with some other team and hit 30 HR next year.
ncaachampillini
There is zero chance that happens. He was a one year wonder they failed to capitalize on in the trade market unfortunately for them.
vannzee
Zero percent really?
ncaachampillini
Ok Dr. Math I guess I’ll adjust to 1% chance. He had one of the highest BABIPs ever recorded or something in his outlier year.
darkstar61
They couldn’t trade him – no one was interested. Everyone knew the season was a straight fluke and he’s a replacement player otherwise
PickleRiccck
Unfortunately? Only from the White Socks point of view. He is good player. Player who needs somewhere to play.
sss847
they actually had a deal in place to send him to houston for francis martes but he failed the physical. that one really hurts.
brushbackmlb
I could totally see that happening. He was so rarely healthy (so maybe the Sox know about bigger, longer term issues in the future as well). But when healthy he makes very solid line drive contact. Him in Colorado? What would be interesting.
nrd1138
With the luck of the Sox? Yep. He’ll have a healthy season where he plays all year, hits .330 and clubs at least 25 homers, then Hahn will be unjustly criticized for it. Avi had huge potential but a guy that big should have been hammer homers the minute he got to the bigs. The sox gave him every chance and he let them down.

YYYYEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
How’s the crow taste, mcphisto?
ASapsFables
It’ll taste great if Bryce Harper replaces Avisail Garcia in RF. If some combination of Nicky Delmonico, Ryan Cordell or Daniel Palka winds up patrolling RF in 2019 we will all be left with a bad taste in our mouths.
nmendoza7
Flash in the pan type beat.
southern lion
First Davidson now Garcia…. please leave Daniel Palka alone. Yes, selfish fantasy reasons on my part.
mamss
How deep is your league that palka makes that big a difference?
baseballpun
“How deep is your league?” is my favorite BeeGees song.

Genius
MrStealYoBase
Palla is making the minimum and can be stored in the minors if they need to.
nrd1138
Palka I think is the reason why Garcia and Davidson were both let go. Im sure Palka can learn how to play at first and basically be a lefty Davidson.. wonder if he can pitch too?
corey3miller
With Davidson and Garcia gone Sox are probably gonna get Harper or machado or both
milkman
No way, its PALKA time baby
ewitkows
More likely neither
SouthsideSlugger
I’d bet on them signing Cruz. Still can’t imagine Reinsdorf opening his man purse wide enough to sign either of the big two, let alone one.
SouthsideSlugger
I meant both of the big two,let alone one.
ASapsFables
corey3miller- A way too conservative prediction. The White Sox will sign Bryce Harper, Manny Machado and one of the top FA starting pitchers. They will also trade for Noah Syndergaard and J.T. Realmuto without giving up any of their top-6 prospects. When opening day arrives, the White Sox will be the prohibitive favorites to win the AL Central and represent the league in the World Series! You heard it here first. lol
whynot101
Dude pass me the pipe, I’m all in:)
adshadbolt
Hell go back to Detroit to go hit with miggy again
Danny B.
This isn’t that shocking. That $8 million pricetag is a hefty one when you have Eloy Jimenez ready for the big leagues making the minimum.
Jockstrapper
Soooo…they’re getting nothing for him?
PickleRiccck
They are getting the satisfaction that they were the ones who have granted him his emancipation from being contractually obligated to play for their organization. Does that sound like nothing to you?
sdfriarfan
why yes, yes it does.
Jockstrapper
I mean they could at least pretend they know what they’re doing.
dabrewcrew
Future Cleveland Indian?
sufferforsnakes
Ugh.
mamss
Palka next, please
milkman
i am guessing so he then hes available on the market? If im a white sox fan i am rather excited about Palka next year. The dude received ROY votes this year.
brent8706
I was a senior and he was a freshman when we played baseball together back in high school. So I am hoping he can have a good career
brent8706
Palka was a rookie in 2018….no where near Arb eligibility.
bush1
Word on the street is that he’ll be hitting cleanup for Prince Fielder’s wife’s softball team now.
SouthsideSlugger
Hell, I think he’s been doing that for years already.
bush1
Well yeah, don’t you think that’s what I was suggesting?
SouthsideSlugger
Yes Bush, I was in agreement that he’s been hitting that for years now.
ASapsFables
He’ll be the DF for the entire team!
baseball10
Without much knowledge of Garcia…is he a fit for the Braves? I think ATL will go bargain hunting in RF and they can now that they have Donaldson. Also, how is his defense?
unpaidobserver
A glorified DH that doesnt get onbase enough.
pplama
Any team with plans on contending should stay far away. Bad D. Low OBP. Singles hitter when he goes the other way. Rolls over on the ball and grounds out to SS when he gets pull happy. Has trouble staying in shape and can;t keep his legs healthy..
jimmertee
He had one good year, which tells me he did something different in his vitamins supplements that year. Cough, Cough.
Priggs89
Probably shouldn’t have stopped then.
ASapsFables
Fact is, Avisail Garcia inadvertently swapped energy drinks with Wellington Castillo in Glendale last spring.
Bryzzo2016
What?!?! Not “Baby Miggy” hahaha
jekporkins
Giants could try him out in left for league minimum and a ton of incentives if nobody takes him. Yes, we’re desperate for decent outfielders.
ASapsFables
You and the Giants would still be desperate.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
He got insanely lucky in 2017. He has the tools to be better than he’s been, but he’s had several years in the league to utilize them. He can’t stay healthy, either, which obviously hurts his development. I wish him the best, but I’m glad they won’t be paying him $8M this year. He was going to get bumped by Eloy a couple weeks into next year anyway.
ASapsFables
Most White Sox fans are hoping that Avisail Garcia will get “bumped” by free agent RF Bryce Harper. Eloy Jimenez will be bumping LF Daniel Palka to DH next April.
whynot101
Sox save close to 11 mil in salaries and open out 2 spots in their lineup ….. hmmmm Garcia played RF (Harper) and Davidson 3b( machDo) right I know I’m dreaming, I just hit the snooze button
profhambone2
That is a nightmare! Colome trade should point us in the direction we are going…..straight to hell! He is mediocrity deluxe. Garcia had shown he could make it happen when healthy. He will go somewhere else and do quite well while we will have an outfield of “No Field” Delmonico, “No hit/Great Glove” Engle, and “Glovelesss” Jiminez………maybe 45 HR’s,; 235 avg.; and 130 RBI’s total……
ASapsFables
South Side fans will be fine with “Gloveless” Eloy Jimenez if he hits like former White Sox OF “Shoeless” Joe Jackson and fields better than “Neckless” Walt Williams!
imgman09
Doesn’t matter what fans think or media,Garcia has good reputation in the League,if and when he gets healthy he will have multiple offers.
MikeS2
He’s been available to any team who coveted him for about two years now. If anybody really wanted him they could have had him for any kind of prospect. He’ll sign somewhere because there are a lot of bad teams, but his career is 2500 PA of no walks, less than expected power, and bad defense at a corner outfield spot. He has put up 4.2 fWAR in that time, but if you take out 2017 when he had a .392 BABIP, he is literally replacement level in a large sample size.
Injured and bad doesn’t usually draw “multiple offers.”
RustyShackelford
Didnt he bang prince fielders wife?
hyraxwithaflamethrower
Not surprised they couldn’t even get a lottery ticket for him. No team thinks he’s worth $8M next year and, based on the results of this year and every year save 2017, they’re right. I wish him the best and hope he can stay healthy and realize some of his potential because I think he has the ability to hit between .260 and .270 with 25-30 HR in a full season, but I can’t blame the Sox for getting tired of waiting, especially with Eloy coming up.
minoso9
Unfortunate for the former top prospect Garcia was. I guess he ran out of chances with the Sox and those chances will now go to our other outfield prospects. I like the power display Palka exhibited this year-although he may be used as the DH. I wish Avasail all the best.
