The Twins have non-tendered Robbie Grossman, according to Dan Hayes of The Athletic (via Twitter). He had projected to earn a $4.0MM salary.
Grossman is a productive offensive player owing to his outstanding plate discipline, which has allowed him to maintain a .371 on-base percentage over three seasons in Minnesota. Unfortunately, he delivers little in the way of power and is more or less limited to appearing in the corner outfield, a place where teams typically prefer more than a smattering of home runs.
nmendoza7
Buxton did absolutely nothing yet Grossman was actually productive but gets the axe, makes no sense at all.
wjf010
Sorry, Mrs Grossman, but Buxton is the best centerFIELDER in the game. Your son can’t catch throw or run…but those walks were exiting
timw3558
how would you know Buxton is the best cf he hasn’t played enough games in his whole career to equal one full season.
gtgiles
Buxton has started 280 major-league games in CF. You must have a long season where you watch baseball.
m28
Buxton is literally the fastest player in baseball, he can track down nearly any fly ball. Also note the word fielder is in all caps.
cman
Too bad he can’t keep his batting average above .200. Maybe if you put the two of them together you have a complete ball player.
Daryl125
Grossman cost the team MANY runs with his baserunning ability (or lack thereof). When you struggle to go first to third or score from second the way Grossman does, high OBP doesn’t mean too much. Lack of defensive ability doesn’t help either.
cman
Well technically he had 1.8 oWAR last season.
Bob Smiley
Grossman will head to the Indians or the A’s. these seem like 2 teams that would add him
Solaris601
CLE has been kicking themselves for letting him go a few years ago, so I’ll say they’re a logical suitor.
Burgeezy
I agree. I also find it ironic that MLBTR chose a picture of him in a Cleveland uniform instead of a Twins uniform.
3rdStrikeLooking
When did Clev ever have him???
jd396
*sigh*
wjf010
Why would cleveland pick him up? He can’t play outfield. He doesn’t hit enough to be a DH.
someoldguy
No problem we have Cave and his 33% k rate
CaptainHooks
Robbie Grossman was number 3 in BA for Twins STILL ON THE ROSTER before today with at least 100 ABs, and FIRST in OBP in 2018..
wjf010
Funny….he’s not an outfielder. So what, you want him at DH? Joe Mauer took a lot of heat for not having first baseman type numbers, and you want Grossman to DH?
dsteig
They kept Buxton? What a stupid move. I suppose they will give Sano a big raise to
heater
What did you expect them to do with him? Seriously?
biasisrelitive
What were they supposed to do cut him. Ethier way it has nothing to do with the gross man decision
wjf010
Christmas has come early!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you Falvey and Levine.
Rich Hill’s Elbow
Grossman ain’t a bad player, it’s just that he’s not an ideal DH; nor is he a good defensive outfielder. That being said, there’s simply no excuses for the FO letting him go for nothing. Could’ve easily traded him before Aug 31st, could’ve trade him today, now some team (possibly Cleveland) is gonna get an on-base machine for the cost of “next to nothing.”
wjf010
Why waste the roster spot for 8 months….they couldn’t trade him last year…
They got him for nothing…and they got nothing for him….sounds like a fair swap to me.
heater
They let him go for the sake of saving $4mm. No surprise.
gr8witebufalo
They let him go for the sake of a young prospect. 40 man roster spots for prospects is worth we’ll over 4million
biasisrelitive
Do you really think they didn’t explore trading him at the deadline and now? If they could have gotten anything they would have
Michael Chaney
In spring training like two or three years ago before they cut him loose and he ended up with the Twins

^This was supposed to be a reply

Good move. Grossman can get on base but offers little else. He doesn’t have value as a runner, is a poor defender and has virtually no power all leading to a career fWAR of 2.6.
Jjbeach
I liked Grossman, but, yeah… didn’t make sense to keep him for $4+MM.
I wish him the best of luck and hope that he is able to sign on somewhere.
Twins might offer him a minor-league contract otherwise.
Randy84Moss
Praise Jesus! No Joe Mauer and No Robbie Grossman. If only we could of dumped Adrianza as well.
joepanikatthedisco
Now don’t come crying to us when the Twins are 15 games out of first in June because “nobody can get on base”
Slom6
People actually say they’d take Grossman over Buxton? Please list real reasons (OBP doesn’t matter because the rest of the team doesn’t make contact). Ready…..go!
Fuck Me Bitch
Twins sweeping the floor of all clutter that haven’t moved them forward. Good news!
CaptainHooks
People keep saying that Robbie Grossman was expendable because the Twins picked up Michael Reed off the Waiver Wire from the Atlanta Braves. They claim that Reed and Grossman are “similar players”, except Reed will work cheaper.
Reed MLB BA. .229, MLB OBP .270 MLB HR 0, MLB SB 1
Grossman MLB BA .256 MLB OBP .355 MLB HR 36 MLB SB 20
I don’t see the “similarity”. What I do see is the Twins keeping an inferior player who will earn $3.5 million LESS than Grossman in 2019.
Best of luck to Robbie Grossman, wherever Grossman lands. Keep that winning attitude and work-ethic, and help whatever team you end up with. Thanks for your contributions to the Twins.
gtgiles
That’s a beyond-small sample size for Reed that you’re using – 37 plate appearances. He’s also four years younger than Grossman.
Reed’s minor-league slash lines are actually amazing similar to Grossman’s, and Reed has always been young for the league he’s in. Also, he has above-average speed and respectable defensive numbers, which is more than can be said for Grossman.
I agree that I wish Grossman luck, and he filled a needed role for the team. I also agree that he wasn’t worth what the Twins would have had to pay him.
cman
last season was clearly the best of his career so far. And at 28 he might have a few more. Best of luck to Grossman. I had no problem with the guy. In the right situation and if used correctly he’s an asset.
OHjohns
So…if Grossman can get this many comments on a post…..he must be a pretty big deal
STEVE TRISKA
I can’t believe all the negative comments from all the armchair quarterbacks that have probably never even played an organized sport.. Robbie Grossman did the best job he could for you whiners. I hope he goes to a team within your division and makes you all eat your words. He is still a relatively young player that may still develop power in the right environment. There have been many players over the years, that as they matured, became better power hitters. You go Robbie. Go kick some ass!!!
