Let’s ask a few questions here:
Does Thor command more in a trade than Archer did?
Both pitchers have three years left
Thor is better but isn’t healthy a lot
Archer seemed like an overpay
I would rather have Thor but not sure I would want my team to pay that much for him
Phanatic 2022
Archers numbers had been going south for 2-3 years. Yes Thor is fragile but I think the price has to be higher.

Another question:
Is it more beneficial for the Mariners to attach Díaz to Cabo to rid themselves of the contract or is it more beneficial to know you are stuck with the contract but you can trade Díaz for a prospect haul?
Think of the Kimbrel/Upton trade
The Braves would most likely be in an even better position now if they waited until Upton last contract was up and traded Kimbrel by himself.
khopper10
They likely wouldn’t have had the capacity to get Touki for free two months later.
petersdylan36
Ohhh I never though of that. They had free cap space to take on McCarthy which included Touki
Knowthemarket
They took on Bronson’s contract and the Braves got Touki as payment. Relieving payroll matters a lot for rebuiling teams.
petersdylan36
Oh yep, that’s who I meant. It’s crazy that they gave him up to rid themselves of a 2/24 contract
Phanatic 2022
Depends on financials

Another question:
When do the Angels realize that they should Trade Trout? Next offseason, right?
Samuel
Tough to sell to the fanbase.
The best time would be approaching the 2020 trade deadline. Contenders will be lining up like drunken Sailors that just got paid. The season ticket holders checks will have cleared the bank.
Since free agency began – with the exception of Stoneman’s time as GM – the Angels have been known for overpaying free agents and subsequently getting stuck with outrageously bad contracts. In SoCal, Angels Stadium is known as the place players go to pick up the money and kill their careers.
Mike Trout is a big problem for the owner and front office. I think they don’t know what to do.
baseballpun
Do the Angels have a fanbase? Never seen one in the wild.
Knowthemarket
I kind of agree but it would be tough to do. What do you look for in return? Do you go to the Padres and say: Give us Tatis, Gore, Meija and then we can talk about the secondary pieces.
Would the Padres really do that though? I struggle to think they would. But then it’s Trout. When was the last time baseball’s best player was traded? It’s really difficult to imagine what that would cost. I wonder if Padres fans would actually want this, too. That’s a future core you gave away for Trout. And then would Angel fans be okay with trading away the best player in baseball?
This is just one example. There are only a handful of teams that could conceivably put together a Trout package.
petersdylan36
As a Padres fan.. NO.
They would be in the same position as the angels now. If you sell the farm, you don’t have anything else around Trout. It’s an evil circle until trout is a free agent
RedRooster
No, the Padres are not going to bet all their chips on 2019 and 2020 knowing that they have no chance of keeping Trout beyond that point.
Knowthemarket
Geez, rooster, I wasn’t saying they would or should do this. It’s an example of how difficult it is to trade Trout.
kidaplus
Chris Sale was traded with 3 years @39 mil total remaining on his contract…. that just a few million more than one season of Kershaw, Max, Price, Greinke etc… for Three. Years. Prob the most valuable established A1 talent/price ratio moved since Ruth or in any sport.
Trout makes 33mil a year… if 3 years of Sale can be traded at that price, Trout at 50 mil for a season and a half can be traded.
petersdylan36
I don’t think Pollock tops Cain’s deal. How about 4/60?
Phanatic 2022
Correct pollock is a porcelain doll
RedRooster
Why does this guy keep pushing Chatwood to the Padres?
petersdylan36
As a padres fan, there is no reason that I would want the padres to touch Chatwood or Russell
baseballpun
I would think the Pads should be all over low-risk, buy-low pitchers who could put up better results in that ballpark.
RedRooster
Chatwood isn’t low risk with that contract
RedRooster
And Preller and co. do have a history of shying away from domestic abusers (released Olivera even though they were already on the hook for his contract and had no one better than him at SS, released Torres despite him being a quality bullpen piece for SD in 2017)
Rking
If you had no one better than Olivera to trot out there at shortstop that is sad. HO had to be one of the worst investments of all time in every aspect. Plus he wasn’t a shortstop.
RedRooster
“If you had no one better than Olivera to trot out there at shortstop that is sad.”
Yep
megaj
Because the Cubs ARE going to dump Chatwood somewhere, and the Padres would be the type of team to take a chance he finds his control. Without the walks, Chatwood is a pretty good pitcher.
RedRooster
“Because the Cubs ARE going to dump Chatwood somewhere…”
Yeah, sure
“… and the Padres would be the type of team to take a chance he finds his control.”
If the Cubs take back Wil Myers

Is baseball moving or should move to a rover type for all games and rotations. Pros and some cons to it all but roll the dice like the reds or the Orioles. Construct a team of pitchers that are dominant in three inning spots.
1. Breaks game into thirds
2. Keeps arms with less innings in the long run. Already a problem with MLB to get ton of innings out of starters
3. Batters don’t see the same arm twice. Less likely to get an approach.
4. 2018 postseason is a glimpse of the strategy and style that when it works looks tough for hitters and managers to make lineup changes.
5. Rosters would need overhauled and costs or contracts adjusted accordingly to more metrics than traditional stats.
Baseball critics, fans or comedians want to hear the thoughts. Teams who suck like rays tried this. Brewers showed this in the postseason and Boston made it work. Yankees have the shortened game mentality too. Should they all go ALL IN????
Phanatic 2022
It amazes me how many cubs fans ( or maybe just 1 guy who gets a lot of questions answered..jeje). That believe Russell is a valuable asset. He has been BAD the last few years. Now that everyone knows he beats his wife cubbies think someone should give them 40m for the privilege to let him beat their wives….HA
Phanatic 2022
Dump porcello to sign evaldi???? The Red Sox need 3 starters. So your plan is to sign 1 and trade 1../
Phanatic 2022
Did the cubs end up picking up cole Jamel’s option?
megaj
Yes, they picked up Hamel’s option. Currently, their starting 5 would be Darvish, Hamels, Lester, Hendricks, and Quintana. It looks like they are going to try and dump Chatwood somewhere, while there have also been talks between the Mets and Cubs concerning Syndergard.
Balk
I’m just busting up laughing at people who say madbum is diminished. He’s going to have that bounce back season after two fluk injuries. After last spring before the ball off the hand he had his velocity up and was getting swing and misses, it’s hard to press a rehab assignment and come back in the middle of the season where batters are at there prime. Hope the Giants keep him and extend him somehow.
Melchez
How does a players contract affect the salary tax? Let’s say Harper signs a 20 year contract that’s front loaded for 400 mil in the first 10 years and then 1 mil a year for the next 10 with player opt outs. That’s 410 over 20 years, so an average annual of 20.5 even though he’d most likely opt out after 10 years.
Can a team do that to avoid tax problems?
