The Mariners announced that they’ve selected the contract of outfield prospect Braden Bishop, meaning he’s now been added to the 40-man roster and protected from December’s Rule 5 Draft. Major League teams have until Tuesday of next week to add players to the 40-man in advance of the Rule 5.
Bishop, 25, certainly would’ve been a candidate to be selected. Seattle’s No. 5 prospect according to MLB.com, Bishop hit .284/.361/.412 with eight homers and five steals in 394 plate appearances last season. Capable of playing all three outfield spots, Bishop is widely regarded as a plus defender in center field with plus speed and an above-average arm. MLB.com’s Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo write that he projects as a top-of-the-order hitter if he reaches his ceiling
geejohnny
Top of the order when he hits his ceiling? Heck…he’s 25. His ceiling just got lower.
darkstar61
Adding to that – 25 and hasn’t seen even Tacoma yet
Doesn’t mean career is over, but should dampen expectations at least some.

There was a time when not every hot prospect was 20 years old. All it means to me is the M’s believe at this time he’s worth protecting over some other prospect they have.
darkstar61
Well you should advise Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo of your lower expectations – they believe him to be a top of the order bat (not sure where they get that either, as never seen anything indicating that is an expected outcome at all)

MLB Prospect Watch is the source of the top-of-order ceiling assessment:

… although I don’t necessarily agree.
antsmith7
If he can play great defense and be a solid number 8 hitter I’d be satisfied.
IACub
could be a classic 4th/5th outfielder…not a bad move to protect him
lovableschmuck
Bishop’s a top of the order bat especially when compared to Dee Gordon’s below average defense and horrible .288 OBA leading off for the Mariners last season.
letsplaytwo
M’s already have a great defensive center fielder in Maillex Smith – crushed two bombs last season too.
unsaturatedmatz
That’s preposterous! Mallex Smith is below average in all defensive metrics. He might be fast as lightning, but he takes atrocious routes.
geejohnny
Atrocious routes on the basepaths too. Fun to watch as you pull your hair out. Very disruptive….to both teams.

Billy’s son? Can he fly like him? Lol

Set aside baseball skills for a second, and please recognize his work in raising funds to battle Alzheimer’s with his 4Mom effort (4momalz.com/). He’s done great work coalescing the Mariner’s organization and other professionals to focus on this horrible affliction. You don’t see that type of work coming from a minor leaguer.
bigeasye
Agreed with the above comment about alzheimers but he’s also college player and not HS so naturally he’s going to be older. I saw him play at Washington and he was a stud- multiple Sportscenter top plays and is starting to hit for power and average. Teams need people like him
matanzas1962
At the age of 25 he hits 8 HR and you call that starting to hit for Power?
HFNY
This is good news as Bishop could see a call-up next year, even if it isn’t until the Sept call-ups.
Even if he doesn’t end-up being a top of the order guy, he still brings a good amount to the table.
On another note, I hope the MLB starts / finishes its investigation into Lorena Martin’s allegations in a few weeks because it would be nice for that to be put to bed / move on from a bad hire.
aj_54
yeah I think he’ll get some time in Seattle this year
