The Dodgers released right-hander Erik Goeddel and left-hander Zac Rosscup, tweets Ken Gurnick of MLB.com. Both pitchers were designated for assignment earlier this week as the Dodgers worked to set their 40-man roster before the deadline to protect players from the Rule 5 Draft.
Goeddel, 30 next month, quietly enjoyed a nice year split between the Mariners and Dodgers, pitching to a combined 2.95 ERA with 10.8 K/9, 4.9 BB/9, 1.0 HR/9 and a 44.8 percent ground-ball rate in 36 2/3 innings of work. He also did an excellent job of limiting hard contact (23.3 percent, per Statcast) while posting a swinging-strike rate (15.8 percent) and a chase rate (37.4 percent) that were vastly better than the league average (10.7 percent and 30.9 percent, respectively).
That said, Goeddel’s control was clearly a problem, as he walked 20 batters, hit another and threw three wild pitches in those 36 2/3 frames. Goeddel also posted below-average spin rates on both his four-seamer and his curveball, and he was projected by MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz to earn $900K in his first winter of arbitration eligibility. Any team adding Goeddel would have the ability to control him through the 2021 season.
The 30-year-old Rosscup was claimed off waivers out of the Rockies organization in July and pitched 11 1/3 innings out of the L.A. ’pen thereafter. He was tagged for six earned runs in that time but also posted a terrific 20-to-4 K/BB ratio in that time. Rosscup, who threw his slider at a 50 percent clip in this year’s small sample of work, posted a massive 19.5 percent swinging-strike rate and a 37.9 percent chase rate. However, he also yielded a 43.5 percent hard-hit rate (via Statcast).
Rosscup has overwhelmed lefties throughout his career, holding same-handed opponents to a .138/.266/.275 slash. On the other side of the coin, righties have utterly clobbered him, hitting .317/.389/.634 in parts of five big league seasons. Like Goeddel, he has three-plus years of big league service and can technically be controlled through the 2021 seasons by any organization that adds him.

if Braves non-tender Sam Freeman or Jonny Venters, I could see them taking a flyer on one of those pitchers.
buck12
I could see the Jays as a landing spot for either. See if they can turn them into a trade deadline chip as they did with Oh and Axford last year.

A better headline?
Dodgers release Dave Roberts.

Ridiculous. Now the Giants are going to all get a computer and carry their “cheat sheet”. I’m betting Bochy will have to take courses in how to turn his ‘puter on.

Houston We Have A Solution
I get roscup kind of, though he’s definitely a loogy.
Goeddel I don’t get as much. Deapite control issues he still posted great numbers in terms of Ks and soft contact. And held both righties and lefties to under .700 ops. And under .400 slg.
And for a team whos pen has been a source of weakness last couple seasons idk why they’re getting rid of one of the more productive players in goedell.
fred-3
I’d be willing to guess there are at least 10 better relief pitchers than Goedell in the Dodgers org. from the upper minors and majors
BlueSkyLA
Fundamentally the Dodgers believe in quantity over quality when it comes to relief pitching. The list of inconsistent relievers they’ve acquired in the Friedman era is a long one. Few of them stick because few of them are good enough to stick. We will soon know if anything in the approach to the bullpen changes with Zaidi moving on, but I suspect not. I suspect the parade of marginal relievers will continue.
restingmitchface
You’ve just described like ~90% of all relief pitchers. Inconsistent, volatile, etc.
BlueSkyLA
On noncompetitive teams, on teams that can’t afford better, maybe. Teams that expect to compete will find and keep reliable bullpen arms. The repeated weakness in the Dodgers’ pen comes from somewhere, and it’s from dumpster diving for relievers, pitchers that like Goeddel and Rosscup, weren’t good enough to stick with less competitive teams.
restingmitchface
The Dodgers just had their asses handed to them by Nathan Eovalidi and Joe Kelly.
Maybe the Dodgers FO just didn’t dumpster-dive through the correct dumpsters? Or maybe relievers (and baseball in general) are just weird?
I won’t pretend to know the answer, but I will say this: look at the list of highest-paid RP contracts and tell me how many of those guys you wish the Dodgers were paying big money to. The list is…not long.
Kenleyfornia74
Yeah the free agent bullpen arms have flat out been terrible.
bigkempin
And how does having a lot of high paid relievers generally work out for teams? The BoSox didn’t have a lot, the Stros didn’t have a lot….the Rockies did. And you’re acting as if Eovaldi and Kelly weren’t picked out the dumpster.
fred-3
BlueSkyLA is a self loathing Dodgers fan. I just skip is post for the most part.
iverbure
This. This notion that being a RP is better for your arm somehow is just a company line teams used to lie to guys that they didn’t want to be starters. There’s no evidence to suggest it. There’s plenty of evidence to suggest its worst on your arm though, see the inconsistency of most RP year to year.
BlueSkyLA
That’s total baloney, and you know it. I ask tough questions for which you have no answers. Once again.
BlueSkyLA
It isn’t necessarily about paying a lot, it is about making quality selections. I can easily post a long list of nonentity relievers the Dodgers either signed or selected off waivers over the last few years. Most of them ended up being released, some after just a few appearances. Add to that the list of ineffective middle relievers who they stuck by far too long.
The bullpen philosophy should be pretty clear by now. It’s about having a lot of burnable arms to eat innings. That approach might even have some merit in a regular season, if it protects the back end from overuse, and if you end up with the effective core you will need to succeed in the postseason.
When it doesn’t, the results speak for themselves.
JKB 2
Iverbure what evidence is there to support your notion that being a RP is worse for your arm than being a SP?
Do not try to tell us that RP’s being inconsistent is proof (as you seem to infer) as that has nothing to do with their arm being hurt or not.
And to suggest that its a “company line” that teams tell players to “lie to guys” that they do not want to be starters makes no sense. If a team wants to convert you to being a RP from SP they they tell you. Maybe it was do to arm injury in past but often jts because the SP is not getting the job done. Maybe they have 2 pitches and not 3 for instance.
JKB 2
So whats your point BlueSky. Dodgers are special and should never claim a pitcher waived by a worse team? That is your logic huh? Insane.
BlueSkyLA
So your answer is to tell me what I believe?
Instead, why not try dealing with what I actually said? I know, that’s so much more difficult.
fred-3
“ I ask tough questions for which you have no answers. Once again.“
You’ve been wrong about the Dodgers so much in the past (DBacks are better than the Dodgers with Greinke, Dodgers are done in May this year, Dodgers will pick Kapler over Roberts) I just stopped looking at your post when I see you icon. So me not having answers is me just igorning you.
Cam
BlueSky, instead of repeating what signings were wrong, can you enlighten us about what signings would have been right? It’s very easy to critique a plan when there is no alternative presented.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Goeddel is out of options. As a mid relief guy there are better options currently on the roster. The Dodgers RH options are pretty solid. Goeddel went on a tear of scoreless inning streak that was unsustainable, and was sort of doing it with smoke and mirrors in a new league. Rosscup was basically a loogy. Goeddel is far behind in the line and falls even further with additions to the pen. He doesn’t have that ceiling to really protect him and might be a milb signing to provide innings and depth at OKC.
justin-turner overdrive
Goeddel is actually a decent reclamation project, ignore that 2018 ERA – its all smoke and mirrors, he had a FIP almost a full run higher and walks far too many to be useful on a contender. Those hard contact and swinging strike rates combined with a 4.9/9 BB rate scream thrower, not pitcher.
He didn’t even throw in the postseason for LA, so it’s not even like they viewed him otherwise, other than the shiny ERA he really didn’t really have a nice year – the nice year he had was in 2015 – that’s what the team picking him up should be looking at. If he can get the walks down, he’s in business, but limiting walks means pitching, not throwing.
BW1
Goeddel seems like a potential Rays pickup.
phenomenalajs
I could see Mets bringing him back. He’s better than most of the “talent” (and I use that word loosely) they had in the bullpen.

Matt kemp for Robinson Cano
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Bahahaha no
zachgwest
Why not? No need for Matt kemp and def need for 2b. 2b has been the worst position for Dodgers. Cano can hit.
Kenleyfornia74
Because Cano’s contract is an albatross, he is declining and coming off a PED suspension. Easy pass
BleedzBlue
Why not? Well, the question is how well a 2b will continue to hit over the remainder of the 5 years (taking him to age 41) of his contract. While 24mil a year seemed very reasonable early on, Seattle is now entering the regret phase of that deal. Sorry, but the Dodgers are full up on regret. Now if they payed 10mil a year off that deal and ate all of Kemps contract, maybe… but that’s not something I could see either team entertaining.
zachgwest
Mariners are in sell mode they say and yes Mariners have to eat some more of the deal but Cano is on steroids so he is lock to hit again this year. Taylor or Kiki are back ups not to mention one of them needs to maybe back up Seager full time if he’s not okay so who is their 2b going to be? Is Bellinger a CF now? Lol Dodgers need a bat Muncy saved them last year don’t count on it again
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
I can go on and on about which this isn’t going to happen, but for the interest of time and conversation I won’t. You’re scoffing at a career 7 DRS in CF who is a natural OF and their best defensive option. Add to that his offense is a plus in CF. I don’t know who is going to be their 2b, but the Dodgers can go down multiple avenues. Avenues in which again allow both to roam. And it’s not as though the 2b market is scarce. The Dodgers needed Muncy/Kemp to save them, because they lost their two best hitters. 1 for an extended period of basically two months and the other who was a shell of himself, due to the injury, for the year. They also had multiple catalyst of their 17 offense basically experiencing sop slumps.
Beyond that just the practical reasons as to why this trade will never work; he’s 36 coming off a PED suspension with 5 years on his contract. So you’re expecting the FO to be 100% sure that there isn’t a steep sudden decline, like history tells us is most often the case. On an NL team in which a move down the defensive spectrum seems inevitable, it’s not the Dodgers responsibility to bail the Mariners out. The Dodgers have more needs that can filled with 100M and a viable short side of a platoon that’s only under contract for 1 more year.
zachgwest
History of PED’s suspension actually shows players become better so don’t see that as negative. Maybe the steroids are still in the system who knows lol Bellinger is not a natural 1b. Why in late game situations Bellinger moved to 1b and Taylor whoever plays CF? Point was Dodgers have no 2b and as the bad contract article came out earlier today Cano and Kemp are on both. Weird. One question.. would you not want to see Cano at 2b? Cano would fit in that line-up perfectly! He is still a top 2b in the league…
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
That’s simply just not true and to attempt to make that correlation is absurd. At 35, he was taking PEDs for a reason. One for which we may never know or he just slipped and finally got caught. Cycling off PEDs does not make you better and the overall destruction PEDs inflicts on the body is a serious issue not to be taken lightly. There is a reason why careers are no longer lasting into the latter 30s early 40s. So a sudden steep decline and breaking down of the body would not at all be a surprise. It’d actually be foreseeable. Least to say if he stopped taking PEDs they are no longer in his system. Which brings to light the more important, why was he taking them in the first place? The answer probably lies closer to the fact that he felt he was losing a step.
Actually if you knew anything about Bellinger, he an absolute defensive wizard at 1st. He’s also an above average defender in CF, and one of the fastest Dodger players. Late inning defensive maneuvering are due in part, because Taylor is by far a better defender than say a Muncy.
I get your point. I truly do, but you just don’t seem to know what you’re talking about from the PED aspect, FO aspect, from the defensive abilities of Bellinger, and simply how his team operates. Would I have loved to see a 20 something y/o Cano play at Chavez Ravine? Sure, who wouldn’t have. But that’s not what we’re talking about here. The Dodgers are getting back a legitimate dynamic mid of the order type bat. Now they merely need to lengthen the lineup again and get back to focusing on defense. That along with many aspects was a clear downfall. Needless to say adding 5 years and trusting that Cano won’t face substantial decline/get popped for PEDs again isn’t even a road they should entertain. This isn’t a team that needs to be completely reworked/reimagined. It’s simply a team that needs a few tweaks and to become more balanced.
zachgwest
Nelson Cruz busted for steroids 2012. 2013 all star first time in years. 2014 first time he ever hit 40 home runs. Ryan Braun 2011 busted for steroids 2012 41 home runs .319. Dee Gordon before steroids .230 hitter after steroids and off steroids much better hitter. Melky almost out of baseball still playing. Do you think peoples careers change because of steroids or think this is a coincidence?
Steroids even once you are off will change you for the foreseeable future for the better. Am I saying make them legal? No, because then it’s hard to judge which players are better. Will they kill or hurt you taken correctly? NO. People do steroids all the time with no negative side effects. The most common user is at your local gym not professional athletes.
Would I take steroids if I played mlb? Yes, For the fact it would make me a better player for the foreseeable future. 1st time suspension means nothing and you will be paid millions more in the next contract. My motivation being playing and money unlike Cano. Once you hit a peak and steroids pushes you past that peak even without steroids your old peak is more of a baseline. This is applies to anyone. Steroids have a bad name and have came miles ways in last 20 years to the public. Testosterone use to be considered a horrible steroid now I know so many people that get testosterone shots from their doctors because they are “low”. So steep decline after off steroids history has shown that is not the case at all.
2 my question was is Bellinger a CF or a 1b? Not if he can play both positions? Which you thought I said! I don’t think you listen to when someone speaks you just makes assumptions that you know more about baseball because??? You read about it more? I believe he is a 1b. Can he play cf yes but don’t think that’s the long term answer. It is a funny situation because not to many players come up as a first baseman then become center fielders. Do you know if he is a 1b or cf? because the Dodgers don’t even know that answer.
Since you know how the “Dodgers operate” they won’t sign Cano because of contract? What because of age? Not signing long term contracts is not a Dodger thing! That’s a baseball thing now. Last off season being the market change. It’s not as much about age as about commitment. Higher aav less years no matter the age. Yes, even the Dodgers! They signed Justin Turner at 32 for 4 more years, Even better they signed Rich Hill 37 years old 3 more years.
The whole conversation was simply Matt Kemp bad contract. Robinson Cano bad contract and the Dodgers need a 2b! Dodgers clearly need help at 2b that is a fact! That has been their worst position in years! Maybe they shouldn’t have traded Dee Gordon or even Jose Peraza.
Do you know who Peraza is? Try and be more of a overall baseball fan instead of a Dodger thinking only fan. You will understand baseball a lot better than thinking you know more than anyone else. Also, no one should take hits at someone else for commenting no matter what the comment is. No right or wrong. Express ideas joke around as I was. We neither have effect on what the Dodgers will do. Read this before you comment back instead of thinking you know the “right” answer to type next and everyone else knows nothing.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
You’re cherry picking a couple of players who’s situations were all different and you’re trying to apply them as they are fact and all comparable. But I regress, that argument seems to have alluded the conversation, because we’re using a couple examples. But let’s simply get passed that because it appears we will seemingly be go around in circles.
I have an understanding of how the Dodgers operate along with the game. Instead of us throwing pot shots here let’s get into it. Do they miss Peraza or Gordon? The answer is probably not. They clearly don’t value those type of players. And while Gordon had that amazing 15, which is questionable, he hasn’t really set the world on fire with consistency. You can also say the same about Peraza is which his value is derived from his defense as a SS. But again by standards you can make an argument that they both haven’t exactly been above average hitters. Whatever you think of the philosophy they’ve preferred higher obp types that have some pop. Now that hasn’t always manifested itself in the way they’d like, but they’ve had the ability to extract values through the use of platoons. Gordon is an extremely fun player to watch, but with the aggressiveness of Seager and Turner you kind of take his best offensive weapon away. So in that sense a high obp leadoff hitter is where they find it. That isn’t necessarily Gordon’s forte, working counts taking walks.
You can look upon their thinking and have an understanding of what they are trying to accomplish and how they operate. They’ve never lived at the top of the market for anything other than their cornerstone players. They’ve never inked a 100M+ contract on the open market. They were willing to for elite pitchers, because there’s something to be said about elite arms. So regardless of what we think simply imagining a Cano exchange is even harder to see. I do think they’ll live at the top of the market, but with it they’ll be extremely selective. It makes all the more sense it’ll be a RH bat at a position that isn’t readily/close to available in their system. I think eventually you’ll see them flex their financial might for a guy like Arenado.
They most likely view the depth on the 2b market this offseason being able to provide the alternative they are looking for without tying them up. So you asked who I thought was going to be the Dodgers 2b, and my thought is pretty simple. It will probably be a guy like Lowrie on a 1 year/2 year deal, as they wait for a guy like Lux to finish off his development.
On a final note, because this post is way to winded, I’m not sure the Dodgers care about where Bellinger’s long term home is. They value versatility and it’s inherently clear throughout their system. As long as he’s a plus defender in CF he will see significant time there as he should. That part of the plan was pretty clear as he was moving up the minor league ladder.
I apologize if I came across as a snobby fan. I just think it’s pretty simple and predictable how Friedman operates and how they fill their gaps. He wasn’t at all lying when he said they will win today with an eye on tomorrow. But of the different paths and churning they’ll see this offseason that makes the least sense at least to me with all the factors involved.

Finally the answers
Question 1: Who will be the Dodgers second baseman?
I said, I would like Cano all though I know this is not realistic unless Mariners are in complete sell mode which I was implying. You don’t know they could eat most of the contract and I would like him better than Lowrie that’s for sure.
You say, Jed Lowrie 36 year old same age as Cano. Coming off best year of his career so prolly not sustainable. This would be a waste as I think Kiki is a back up but I like him better.
Answer: We agree
Being realistic I think Dodgers will wait out the market seeing the market develop with Dozier, DJ, Cabrera maybe trade for Scooter. Like any of these players better than Lowrie. Still be fun to see Cano. They need a real bat at that position none of these players mentioned are expect Cano.
Question 2: Dodgers ownership moves with second base?
I say they dropped the ball. They let go 2 above average second baseman’s go and they have been paying for it ever sense.
You say, they are not worried about letting Dee Gordon or Peraza go? They still have no one and you say they have someone coming up in Lux? Okay, where is he? what will he do? He’s going to put up better numbers than 14 home runs .290 with exceptional defense. You don’t know what he will do and he’s aways away.
Answer: You are completely wrong they have received BELOW AVERAGE results the last few years with Gordon/Peraza putting up ABOVE AVERAGE results.
Question 3
Is Bellinger a CF or 1b?
I say, he should play 1b bc he is a gold glover their but more importantly his hitting may come back if he plays their. Don’t want a Will Myers 2.0
You say, he is CF bc of Max Muncy.
Answer: Don’t know he can play but some people don’t respond well to being moved around. He also took a big step back in hitting. Might not being playing either if that keeps up.
Question 4
Steroids with baseball players?
I say, they make them a better player for the foreseeable future even when off the steroids.
You say, they hurt the body and cause really bad health issues lol
Answer: I provided examples you can not provide any real evidence to say otherwise.
Ps the only smart move Dave Roberts ever made was not starting Kershaw bahaha
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
I’m going to dive into a quick recap, because this discussion is going on way to long.
Dee Gordon has put up an OPS+ of 77, 97, and 79. He has OBPd .305, .341, .288, since his suspension. I don’t really care about his slug, because with the exception of 2015 that’s not who he is. Peraza’s OPS+ has been 102, 63, and 97. He’s OBPd .352, .297, and .326 in a hitters paradise. They are both good players. They both are defensive pulses, but the one thing that leads most to believe they are above average offensively is simply the BA. They again aren’t the type of guys the Dodgers value. So do they miss them again no I don’t think they do at all. Again you can disagree, but in front of Seager and Turner Taylor has pretty much been better than both. Now there are adjustments that clearly need to be made, but again they probably don’t miss either. And that’s exactly the reason why I hate the use of BA and HRs as the offensive measure, because it absolutely doesn’t tell you much of anything. Counting numbers tend to lie especially in extreme environments. In this free agent class it’s simply easy to see them sign a guy that allows Taylor and Kikè to roam, because the place extreme value in that.
Secondly, Bellinger’s inability to hit is not because he’s playing CF. He’s making adjustments for on the fly. Welcome to major league hitting and not every prospects path being linear. He’s also playing CF, because he’s an above average athlete. He is there best defensive CF.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Let’s not forget that Bellinger’s ascension was rapid, because he practically forced his way to stay. He went from a spray the ball little power prospect to completely overhauling his swing to add power finding himself in the major with basically less than a full year in the upper minors. So he’s figuring out his swing in the majors which is not at all shocking to see him taking his lumps during the sophomore slump. He was never as good a hitter as Seager or even Verdugo. So as long as he continues to be an above average CF his offense is still a plus.
On the steroid note you just provided guys that have still performed after steroid use. You’re trying to prove a correlation that is not there. And to even try to do so with a short list doesn’t prove anything. It just clearly shows you’re reaching. The simple fact is even if you take steroids safely there is still an adverse affect on the backside. With that said I can easily poke holes in all your examples. Gordon has never come close to experiencing the year he had in 2015. It’s again more than average, because with his speed you’ll still have BABIP type years because of his speed. It’s the power, it’s the Just as many shrug off the use of cortisone shots as though
zachgwest
You clearly lost this discussion just like losing back to back World Series. How embarrassing. Keep starting Kershaw, have no second baseman and no bullpen that seems to be a winning formula for the playoffs. Jansen can’t even step up in the playoffs lol Only the hitters. If I was Farhan I would leave too.
Kenleyfornia74
Lol you have no clue what you are talking about. Imagine thinking taking on Canos contract until he is 41 is a good idea. The Mariners dont need to be in sell mode. They would let him go in a second. All the people that scream about the Dodgers 2B situation are the same people that think Dee gordon is a good player. Dodgers are fine at 2B as it is, but if they went outside the organization that would be fine too.
zachgwest
You don’t listen to when people talk. Never said take on his whole contract. You seem to keep bringing up age but in fact you said Dodgers will sign someone like Jed Lowrie same age as Cano lol
How are the Dodgers fine at second base they have received below average results last few years and still have no one Lol you make no sense
Sorry to say don’t Dodgers don’t make all the right moves. Look how Boston operates big signing contracts JD. Big trades Chris Sale. They were clearly the best team in baseball and destroyed the Dodgers.
Kenleyfornia74
You are spamming and don’t know what a reply button is. Just flat out trolling lol
zachgwest
That’s your reply? Haha I guess it’s hard to come up with something when Redsox made all the right moves and the Dodgers didn’t
Kenleyfornia74
The fact you arr trying to use “they lost to the red sox” as a talking point” is proof enough you are clueless
zachgwest
Dodgers and RedSox operate nearly opposite that is why they are the example not because lost to them in the World Series that’s just a bonus lol Dodgers are not always right in their moves like you think. Redsox being the best team in baseball last year proves that point.
Kenleyfornia74
You are stuck in 2011 and think Cano is a game changer
zachgwest
Don’t think Cano is a game changer but Dodgers have no second baseman so for you YES he is. You are stuck in 1988! Bahaha
zachgwest
Still waiting for you to name a player who has not been better after taking steroids has to be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
Kenleyfornia74
Are you really this ignorant? How about Dee Gordon who in 2015 played out of his mind. Got busted in 2016 and performance has declined since. But let me guess 9 walks in nearly 600 ab’s is an improvement from what he was doing pre PEDs lol
zachgwest
BEFORE steroids AFTER steroid is the the discussion… Do you not understand? The baseline before steroids. Now name a player that has got worse after taking steroids before taking them. Dee Gordon before steroids .234 batting average yes he has improved lol
Kenleyfornia74
Jose Canseco is that you? You are seriously advocating steroids as something that you can just dismiss. And lets see season before Dee got busted .333 avg 116 OPS+. Since that nothing close. But sure he improved!
zachgwest
No, I’m not advocating steroids at all. It be nearly impossible to tell who’s better than the next unless you let everyone take them.
BEFORE steroids AFTER steroids! Not during! What do you not understand? Baseline before steroids results after and off steroids.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Well you have one in Cano…….but who couldn’t have seen that coming…….
zachgwest
Mariners don’t need to be in sell mode? They already are. Wrong again.. Do you pay attention to anyone besides the Dodgers? Who are you??? Lol this is really to easy
zachgwest
Do you like the article I wrote about Cano? Always taking shots at people. Hope you learn a lesson just like the Dodgers needed too and when I thought it couldn’t get any worse Bahahaha
