The Diamondbacks have non-tendered a trio of notable players, per a club announcement. Reliever Brad Boxberger, starter Shelby Miller, and infielder/outfielder Chris Owings will all be sent onto the open market.
This slate of departures will save some significant cash for an Arizona club that is in a bit of a transition. Boxberger and Miller each projected to earn a hefty $4.9MM, while Owings would have been due something in the vicinity of $3.6MM.
All three are among the most interesting players set loose tonight. The 30-year-old Boxberger has late-inning experience and has little trouble racking up strikeouts, though he also struggled with walks and dingers in 2018. Miller’s highs and lows are well-documented, but he’s still just 28 years of age. As for Owings, the 27-year-old has not quite fulfilled his initial promise but has mostly been a usefully versatile player. Unfortunately, his bat fell off a cliff last year, so he’ll be looking for a chance at redemption.

Whoa
ronnyalton
Miller to braves.
PhilsPhan
Wow is right!
bjupton100
S Miller back to the Cardinals, along with Kelly and could have had Rosenthal also.
bryanjay2
I actually wouldn’t be mad if that happened.
Solaris601
I don’t follow the Dbacks on a daily basis, but I’m pretty surprised to see them cut this trio loose. Miller I can understand, but not so much the other two.
RangerRick123
Owings was batting below .200 for most of the year.. and was even demoted to triple A… Dbacks may still make him an offer for less money.
Boxberger had 8 blown saves and an ERA over 5.00 the second half… he’s a big reason why they didn’t make the playoffs. Also, he would be getting a raise next year, but with Archie, Yoshi, and Yoan Lopez… the back end of the bullpen will be much better off without him. There I’ve caught you up.
adshadbolt
I know owings make a little bit he’s a good player when healthy
RangerRick123
He was healthy last year… and he batted .206 in 106 games…. that’s pretty bad.
dvmin98
Miller to Padres
sdfriarfan
I wish they would have waited instead of signing Richards. If we can sign Shelby for a reasonable AAV, it could be good. to have both
Kenleyfornia74
Not every reclamation project is going to the Padres
stymeedone
Come on Tigers. Look for some bargains.
GarryHarris
The Tigers haven’t “fixed” a pitcher since Milt Wilcox.
heater
Actually since they traded Smoltz to the Braves.
nypadre66
Doyle Alexander was a great pickup…at the time.
ck420
It feels like the dbacks are in a similar situation as the mariners. Need a total rebuild
RangerRick123
It acutally appears the Dbacks are retooling… and not necessarily rebuilding. They just dumped 3 of their worst players who were commanding decent salaries… good move by the Dbacks.
stan lee the manly
Crazy. Seems likely they will move Goldy and Greinke after this
WilliamA
Yeah. I wasn’t sure they were serious about moving Goldie. Now it seems like they’re all in on the rebuild. Although in Owings’ case, they have so much depth in the infield now it makes sense.
RangerRick123
So, the Dbacks non-tender 3 of their worst players… and all of of a sudden you think they are doing a rebuild??? Shelby Miller has been absolutely terrible… Chris Owings was batting below .200 for most of the year before finishing at .206. and Boxberger had 8 blown saves towards the end…
Trust me.. this team will be much better without them.
kimball0401
Miller seems like the perfect project for the Pirates
AUTiger7222
Given the Pirates history of being able to turn guy’s careers around, that would be a great landing spot for him. I’m really hoping he gets it figured out. He’s such a good guy and his one year with the Braves was amazing!! I’ve never seen a guy pitch so good under such dire circumstances.
thecoffinnail
Nobody has had it worse than DeGrom last season.
ronnyalton
Except for shelby miller in 2015.
thelastonetodie
Wow..
Philliesfan4life
If Miller comes back healthy from tommy john, angels should take a low risk high reward move, and matt harvey.
French
I think Miller and Box would be solid pick up for the Angels. I’ll pass on Harvey tho…don’t need that big of a project.
STLCards33
DBacks front office is officially blowing it all up. Why not resign them and then trade them though? They all have value
sidewinder11
Not really. Boxberger completely collapsed at the end of the season and Miller has been horrible since he came to AZ. Owings was also horrible last year
RangerRick123
So the Dbacks don’t resign 3 of there worst players… and YOU think they are rebuilding? HA
Yeah, they have value… at the right price… they are all actually overpaid for their value and an arbitrator would have likely increased their salary. Looks like the Dbacks are saving around 13-14 million, while also cutting their three worst players. Good move by Hazen.
spudchukar
They are making room for the four players they are getting in the trade for Goldschmidt to the Cards.
Bob Smiley
The O’s could use Miller.
stevewpants
Possibly. The division is so tough though, I don’t think most guys looking to regain confidence say, hey the AL east looks like the place a guy can really find himself on the mound.
hiflew
Unless he is pitching against the Orioles that is.
taylorcm
Shelby back to Atlanta where he had his beat season. As a fireman out of the Bullpen.
some251guy
Talk about pouring salt on the wound!
batty
Miller’s early career successes have been derailed over the last 3 seasons. Injuries often do that.
chippahawk
Come back to Atlanta and get that no no you should have had.
Falsehope
Shelby Miller seems like the type of fixer upper The Rangers love
baseballpun
He’s from Texas.
bleacherbum
The Orioles or White Sox make since for him.
Michael Handsman
So shelby miller is either going to cards padres braves tigers pirates angels rangers orioles or white sox. Man we nailed it
TheBoatmen
My guess is on the Ray’s, Jay’s, Indian’s, Royals, Giants, Marlins, A’s, Red’s or Twins. Seriously I can see the Indians as the rebuild.
thecoffinnail
I would like to throw Oakland into the mix. One of the few places where he can probably get a Major League deal as opposed to a minors pact with an invite to spring training.
ronnyalton
Michael handsman, I think its really just how much upside the guy has that is enticing. I really hope the braves pick him up and atleast give him a look. Put him in relief rolls and then stretch him out . get that arm back to normal and let him regain his confidence.
Hes a solid pickup in my opinion.
DoJo
If you follow the Dbacks, this was expected. Maybe they resign Owings as a FA for less $, but I wouldn’t. At this point, any interested team should probably view Shelby Miller as a reliever reclamation project…his starter days should be over unless he wants to amputate. Dbacks are slowly purging the Dave Stewart disaster tour.
RedRooster
Wonder if Balsley would be able to fix Shelby Miller
Bubba 5
All 3 were set to make too much. D-Backs think they can find a closer for less $$ going forward and have done that much in the last few seasons. Miller was a train wreck I wish him luck, Ownings was a gamer but not at 3.6 big ones. All 3 are easily replaced.
Hill411
The D-Backs have traded many extremely talented players in the past. They have little if anything to show for the trades. Additionally, there is the total fiasco from Cuba who was paid a great deal of bucks and had little Major League talent. A major waste of dollars that resulted from the inability of the D-Backs to rwcognize talent. Bottom line: The D-Backs have had little success recognizing great talent and have traded away many players who went on to perform incredibly well with other MLB teams. Right now it does not look like the D-Backs are looking to rebuild to a championship caliber team. Right now looks like a fire sale to pad ownership’s bank account at the expense of the fans.
RangerRick123
Yes, this is true… with past GMs. Like Dave Stewart and Kevin Towers and Josh Byrnes…. they traded away top prospects all the time.
But Mike Hazen is probably the most solid GM they’ve had…. he values analytics and a good farm system. He sure has his work cut out for him with the depleted farm system and the terrible trades Dave Stewart/Tony La Russa did.
The moves I’ve seen them make recently does not look like a “fire sale” at all… they still have A LOT of good affordable players on the team and just signed Eduardo Escobar to a 3 year deal. If anything it looks like they are RETOOLING.
They are likely going to trade Greinke… which would free up $30 million. They also have a chance to resign Clay Buchholz after his tremendous year. Dbacks also have John Duplantier who is promising. I think a lot of the media and fans of other teams are hoping for a fire sale… but so far I just don’t see it.
bhambrave
Have the Braves chosen a new pitching coach yet? If not, enticing a reclamation pitcher to sign might be a little harder. He’d like to know with whom he’ll be working.
