The Cubs have struck a deal with the Padres to acquire righty reliever Rowan Wick, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune tweets. Minor-league infielder Jason Vosler will head to San Diego in return.
Wick came available as the Padres finalized their 40-man roster plans in advance of today’s deadline to protect players from the Rule 5 draft. He’ll occupy a roster spot in Chicago.
The live-armed 26-year-old is still fairly new to pitching after moving out from behind the plate. He reached the majors briefly last year but did not distinguish himself in his ten appearances. Over 54 innings at Triple-A, Wick carried a 2.67Â ERA with 10.7 K/9 and 5.2 BB/9.

1 more to go. Let’s make that SEA deal happen sooner than later
mmarinersfan
Actually, can we not?
Waitings The Hardest Part
Sorry, Dipoto is making a case to be Padres top executive of the year and NO ONE is gonna take that from him.
pads fan1980
Seattle deal will actual take an extra roster spot so if your hoping to clear on more spot this won’t help
RedRooster
Honestly don’t know why they haven’t DFA’d Pirela yet

Where’s Xabial?

Oh my god I hopes ok. He doesnt miss this kind of stuff. Just isnt the same without him.

He had night class

Good for him. I dropped out.
(But now I’m retired!)

Good numbers in AAA. Could be a middle reliever for the Cubs next season. Vosler is a fringe prospect. Grades for trade: Cubs: B+, Padres: C+
dvmin98
Actually its an A- for the Padres. They got a lottery ticket for a player they were gonna DFA
twentyforty
If Vosler is a lottery ticket, odds of winning it just became 1 in 400 trillion.
Waitings The Hardest Part
So……you’re saying there’s a chance.
petrie000
If Vosler’s a lottery ticket, it’s one of those scratch off, 100 dollar grand prize ones…

Exactly dvmin
nmendoza7
And they’ll instantly try to outright him and he’ll immediately be claimed, because the Cubs do the same thing every year.
PickleRiccck
It’s a simple calculus. Either risk losing Vosler in the Rule 5 draft, or trade Vosler for a player in the 40 man who could be outrighted with out being claimed. Simple calculus, d(x^2)/dx = 2x. Simple calculus!

I guess this comment is better than the “BETTER PRINT OUT THE WORLD SERIES TICKETS” complaint that seems to be the norm when a team doesn’t acquire an All-Star.

Is he any good.

I remember seeing Rowan Wick when he was in short season ball as a hitter several years ago. At the time, he could rake.

Hickey resigned….wow….Go get Kranitz!

There’s your 2019 starting 3rd basemen San Diego.
stevebaratta
Can we get Russell Martin to catch for Rowan?
neubs 2
You bet your sweet bippy, they can!
sdfriarfan
I see what you did. Rowan and Martin. Good one.
stevebaratta
Thanks for noticing, I’m glad someone remembers them. I also liked when FELIX Heredia was coached by OSCAR Acosta.

This guy seemed promising as a bullpen piece in a system where bullpen studs pop out of nowhere. Best of luck Mr. Wick.
groundhog5150
Am I missing something? Was Vosler added to the 40 man? If not what makes him ineligible for the Rule 5.
I’m sure it’s a stupid question but, I don’t know the answer.
RedRooster
He’s not ineligible for the Rule 5 draft. He actually was eligible last year. The Cubs could just take him back in Rule 5 if they wished to. But they would have to carry him on the Major League roster for the whole season.
groundhog5150
So my Padres are just gambling that nobody will take Volsler in December? It seems odd to me for a team to make all those moves to clear room on the 40 man, just to trade for someone and leave him unprotected.
RedRooster
The alternative was to lose Wick to waivers
tim815
$100,000>$25,000
And Vosler might not be claimed, or might not survive the season if claimed.
A bit curious on both sides.
csspackler
Yes. They’re taking a chance of losing him. Then again, about 90 percent of players taken in Rule 5 are returned to the original team, so ….
