The Cubs have non-tendered recently acquired infielder Ronald Torreyes, per a club announcement. Also non-tendered were non-arb-eligible players Justin Hancock and Allen Webster.
It’s not entirely clear why the Cubs decided to pick up Torreyes days ago, only to set him free. It could be, though, that the club wanted the added insurance while deciding what to do with Addison Russell, who was tendered earlier today. And several other teams have done the same with certain players, so it’s hardly a one-off situation. It seems clear the utilityman could end up in the Chicago organization, though perhaps only if he is willing to sign a minors deal.
Yay. Calling Ninja Cash… Please re-sign Torreyes. Also, do the Yankees still keep PTBNL they recieved for Torreyes?
Or cash which can be $1…I’m sure the trade is still valid
Thanks. Not holding my breath. Still waiting ptbnl or cash received from the Angels for Jabari Blash…
True, I’m a cubs fan so I was hoping Torreyes could be a placeholder for either Addy or another acquisition
Still see him on someone’s 40. Bat is nice for a 25th man and he has infield versatility.
Didn’t see this coming at all. I’m intrigued.
GMs are flooding the free agent market tonight.
They certainly are. It’s getting interesting.
You can make a non-tender version of FA contest…
Why are they doing this?
They planned it during the recent GM meetings. Just like last year when they decided to sign only relievers during December.. When Mueller’s done with Trump, I think Clark should give him a call.
If your boyfriend is anti trump, you have a girlfriend
Idiot.
Or just a boyfriend capable of critical thinking…
Keeps free agency prices down at least a bit.
Bazinga!
Stupid childish comment u must be a M -generational fool!
We want you… oh wait no we don’t
wtf
Why did they trade for him lol
Back to New York he goes
Welcome back to nyc
LOL
So Lastella is basically given away?
The Torreyes trade and LaStella trade were separate trades. They just happened to be a day apart.
Not necessarily. I think they felt Toe offered more than tommy at this point (and also gave tommy a chance to double his playing time somewhere else).
Now I think they see someone else that is a free agent that they think they can get and offers more than Toe.
Or maybe the cubs have found a second baseman for reasonably good trade/money and plan on moving Baez to SS
DJ lemeheiu
Ding ding ding.
Like PickleRiccck said, they were not part of the same trade.
Torryes was designated by the Yankees and then traded to the Cubs. La Stella was acquired by the Angels for a PTBNL.
I think he is saying LaStella was traded to make room for Torreyes and now Torreyes is gone, and so is LaStella.
off season stuff makes me confused. so does Polish vodka.
it’s been a great 48 hours thanks for the memories
Maybe Jeff Todd was right about his terrible .282 avg.
His average is good but his OBP and slugging isn’t.
they did not like his fake camera routine….lol so messed up
I predicted they’d dump him someway, Hancock and Webster didn’t do too bad either, what a pathetic organization
Hahahaha
Trade him to the yankees as th PTBNL in the ronald torreyes trade
Maybe they decided to do this since Solarte has now become a free agent
Solarte can’t play short.
He can on the Brewers.
Ha!
Seems like a fairly even trade
Why trade for him? He was going to be released or non-tendered anyway. Is there some benefit for the Cubs here?
Theo is one of the worst GM’s going.
Yeah ended 2 curses… just terrible.
If you believe in curses, you’ve already lost this argument.
Name all the other executives who’ve won 2 championships with 2 different organizations?
Walt Jocketty is the only one I can think of. He was scouting director for the A’s in 1990 and the GM for the Cardinals in 2006.
Schuerholz, Gillick, Dombrowski, some other guy who’s slipped off my mind now. it’s been done before. Couple HOFers in there.,
Exactly. Small club. Not sure how anyone can think Theo is a bad GM/Prez
Considering he isn’t a GM, you are wrong a couple of times in such a short comment.
Brain cells. Try using them.
Yea sure pal future HOF’er Theo is terrible. Whatever.
Yeah, that 2016 World Series team he built, awful. ?!?!?!
Well, he isn’t a GM, but he is one of the best executives in baseball.
He can sit in the bleacher seats with ey
Dude what is your problem?
She doesn’t even post on here anymore and you’re still trying to pick fights.
Re-examine your life choices.
Come back to NYY Toe we’ve missed you
Why did they trade for him
Load up on infielders
Lol wow
These moves don’t occur in a vacuum. Maybe Theo thought he had something going and was working with that in mind. It didn’t pan out….game plan changed.
We’re not talking HOFers here….no Refsnyder. Most of these guys are 25th on a 25 man roster. Not to say there aren’t some quality out there; every year there is. But they’re few and far between.
Prob looking for more arbitration money than the what the cubs were willing to give him
Exactly. I believe they can resign him for less. He is simply a free agent. Maybe they wanted to free up a 40 man roster spot and do not risk losing him as a FA
I don’t get what this organization is doing. Maybe someone else interested them or something. Beats me
im wondering if they dont go after Flores and Solarte to help solidfy the bench now
It was insurance Incase they didn’t tender Russell, which they did, so Torres isn’t worth a ML contract. If no one else signs him, perhaps he’ll sign a minor league deal.
IF
Someone please give Torreyes a chance. Lovable guy who finds a way to hit .280. He should be worth a ML contract based on the morale boost alone
Enough about this scrub already!
Wonder where Schoop and Beckham will go.
I think Schoop may be the reason the Cubs non-tendered Torreyes. Give the 40 man spot to Schoop and try to sign Torreyes to a minor league deal.
Schoop had one good year. There was a reason he was non tendered
I don’t think the Cubs will be paying that much for an infielder who’s bat vanished in the second half… They already have a couple of those
What’s the asking price for the Cubs to acquire one (1) Whit Merrifield?
At least Kris Bryant if you ask some non Cub fans
More than he’s actually worth to the Cubs
Schwarber to start. The royals would need to add at least 1 prospect. The Cubs have a great player at 2nd already. They dont need an unproven player with Whit Merrifield.
All this tendering and non-tendering really has me in the mood for some chicken tenders.
Wow he was already fired from theo and co.
Cashman is such a genius…which is why the Yankees haven’t been to the World Series with their bottomless pit of a payroll in a decade.
How bout greinke and Goldschmidt in left for heyward, chatwood, almora and schwarber and mid-level prospects?!? Don’t need to overpay for Harper and you can still go after Machado for the infield and move Bryant to right. Let happ play everyday center and develop. You can even go get light hitting Hamilton as a 4th of or starter if you have to include Happ.
