The Cubs announced that they’ve claimed left-hander Ian Clarkin off waivers from the White Sox. The former first-round pick has yet to make his big league debut.
Clarkin, 24 in February, was the No. 33 pick by the Yankees in the 2013 draft but went from the Yanks to the Sox in the 2017 David Robertson/Tommy Kahnle swap. The 2018 season was an ugly one for Clarkin, however, as he was hit hard in 68 Double-A innings. In 18 appearances (10 starts) at that level he posted a 4.98 ERA and averaged just 4.6 K/9 against 4.1 BB/9. The Cubs have a general need for left-handed depth in the bullpen and will look to tap into the potential that made Clarkin a first-rounder earlier this decade. It’s far from a guarantee that he’ll stick on their 40-man roster for the remainder of the winter, but if h does, he’ll be an optionable piece for the Cubs in 2019.

Only Chris Tillman had more pathetic K/BB rates

Holland was actually solid for a month with Washington last year.

Ninja Cash.
But Kahnle also had ineffective 2018 at MLB for NYY
Rutherford can redeem this trade as can Kahnle for NYY
jbigz12
That trade was never about Ian Clarkin or Tito Polo.

Ian Clarkin was a former first round pick who had value at the time, injury concerns, but MiLB results were there. He was far from a “throw-in” Clarkin’s question was “bullpen or Starter?” at the time. Clarkin was drafted before Judge Lol
Tito (even tho I like him) OK I’ll give you that lol

Yankees only trade junk prospects.
pinstripes17
and the sox only trade junk players. (see Quintana, Jose and Kahnle, Tommy)

The thing I found funny was that Kahnle was originally drafted by the Yankees, then they lost him in Rule 5, then they traded back for him 3 and a half years later.

90+% of the value from that trade on the Sox side was Rutherford. Anything they get (or got) from Clarkin/Polo is icing on the cake. Hahn is ride or die with Rutherford on that one.

This is a good example, on the Rule 5 deadline day, just how quickly prospects can fall out favor. On November 20th last year Ian Clarkin was added to the White Sox 40-man roster to protect him from the 2017 Rule 5 Draft.

I really like this claim for the Cubs. Hopeful he can turn it around.

I agree as a White Sox fan I think he still has value. He is still young with a lot of potential. I hate to see him go but understand it’s business. I do wish him luck and maybe a few bad games if he stays in double “A” to face the Barons.

Hope Clarkin can turn it around, I likes him as a prospect with NY

They gonna acquire future Hall of Famer Rob Refsnyder now?
