The Braves announced Monday that they’ve designated left-hander Ricardo Sanchez for assignment in order to open a spot on the roster for Brian McCann, whose return to Atlanta is now official.
Atlanta originally acquired Sanchez, now 21, back in the 2015 deal that sent third baseman Kyle Kubitza to the Angels. While the lefty ascended to the Double-A level for the first time this past season, he managed just a 4.06 ERA a 44-to-24 K/BB ratio in 57 1/3 innings at that level in 2018. In parts of five minor league seasons, Sanchez has a 4.48 ERA with 8.1 K/9 against 4.1 BB/9 in the minors.

It seemed like a good lottery ticket pickup at the time they got him but he has underperformed and been passed up.
Still hurts to see a big time talent not pan out

Not surprising since so many others in the organization had surpassed Sanchez.

Hard to bite …. still super young and has time to figure it out.. feel like other roster moves could have been done but ultimately not shocked at all by this move. Kid showed moments of great potential but wasn’t putting it al together at all. Would have preferred us to somehow traded him as part of some package. Maybe we find a way to resign him

Don’t think will we have to resign him if he goes unclaimed, which I think is a good possibility he gets claimed. DFA means he just lost his spot on the 40 man roster if he goes unclaimed, then the braves can send him back to the minors. He also might have the option to reject the assignment and elect free agency. I’m not 100% sure if this is correct but I believe it is or pretty close to it.

I think players have to have 5 years of Major League service time (on the 25-man) accrued before they can reject the assignment.

No I think you’re right. He could elect FA. Whatever it’s worth, getting him on a minor league deal isn’t the end of the world, or putting him back in the minors isn’t end of the world either. Hopefully we can find a way to keep him. But I don’t think this kid goes unclaimed

Between the many young guys who will likely get a shot, and the FA’s (like Donaldson) they plan to sign, this guy isnt worth a roster spot

Braves Just signed Donaldson to a one year deal too!

angels!

He gives me a Luis Perdomo-esque vibe.
Could make for a good depth pick-up for the O’s or so I believe.
