6:57pm: Matt Shoemaker has also been non-tendered, per a club announcement, which will keep an estimated $4.3MM off the Halos’ books.
6:21pm: The Angels are set to non-tender righty Blake Parker, per MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand (via Twitter). He was projected to earn $3.1MM by MLBTR & contributor Matt Swartz.
It’s surprising to see Parker kicked to the open market, given that he has worked to a 2.90 ERA in 133 2/3 frames over the past two years with the Halos. On the other hand, the 33-year-old did not sustain his 2017 bump in swinging-strike rate, coughed up quite a few long balls (1.63 per nine), and lost a tick of average fastball velocity in 2018.

Plus he used Ricky Nolasco’ glove.

What?
pinstripes17
Huh?
pinstripes17
I guess they decided they’d spare him before he suffers from the TJS curse
cmancoley
Makes absolutely 0 sense
em650r
He lives in a RV home with his family so he will be parked somewhere else next year
GeoKaplan
No, they actually bought a house before the start of last season. That’s just daring fate.
xabial
How does a pitcher with a 3.26 ERA and 14 saves in 66.1IP get non-tendered??? To save $3M est Arb salary
Lifetime he has 224.1 IP and 3.29 ERA.
stevewpants
And remember Angel fans, you still have a few more years to blame moves like this on the Pujols contract.
Vizionaire
you must be a cards fan still using a lot of preparation h!
STLCards33
Why? Huge relief that the angels got stuck with that contract and not us
callingoutdummies247
Lol not Us….. love it!!
rez2405 2
I think his point was .. instead of sounding like a tool online.. how about doing a lil research and understand that the Pujols contract (albeit a bad one) is not pushing out these guys to be non tendered. They’re well below the luxury tax threshold
cakirby
Not saying I really get the move either, but his peripherals were not good, home/road splits were terrible, and he blew too many leads.
Vizionaire
so, what’s eppler’s plan to build a winner?
HalosHeavenJJ
I don’t get this. He’s not expensive by MLB standards and even if he’s not 2017 Parker, he’s still a decent mid leverage option.
jdodson1822
He regressed a lot, 2017 H/9 were 5.3, 2018 it was 8.5, HR/9 went from .9 to 1.6, BB went from 2.1 to 2.6 and his K/9 went from 11.5 to 9.5. FIP in 17 was 2.70, last year he was 4.40. He was a great find but they have 3 or 4 guys in the minors that can replace him for 500K and can be optioned
Matt_Angel_Bronco_Laker
Well said.
ABCD
Cubs, please.
darkstar61
They can’t use him on the road. At Angel Stadium he is unbelievable, but he has disappeared on the road both of the past two seasons.
Add in the Angels needing to cut commitments to afford starters, and the fact they were desperately trying to trade him the last few weeks, and this is much more understandable. Obviously no one was interested in dealing for him or he would have been moved instead
Vizionaire
epp?
baseball1600
Giants it’s time to swoop in and flip this guy at the deadline Atnt will buff his stats
Vizionaire
shoe, too? dang!
Rich Hill’s Elbow
Really hoping the Twins can pick him up, because they need all the bullpen help they can get.
GrandpaBaseball
I thought wrong I presumed Albert would have enough pride to retire. Yes I’m aware of the amount of money, but he always had the aura of being a proud man. I am losing confidence in Billy, why not try and sign a top FA or trade for a pitcher I have heard of and has name recognition. Shoe is done, Richards was of no use for several seasons, Meyer never was, We need pitching, pitching and more pitching. Scrap heap pitchers do not work.
baseballpun
No one has so much pride to leave $90 mil on the table.
i like al conin
Not to mention he can pad his stats including an outside chance at 700 home runs.
rez2405 2
Your comment truly makes zero sense. You’re losing confidence in billy and say shoe is done and Richards is of no use yet richards is signed by the Padres and shoe is non tendered.
halos101
Shoemaker non tender i agree with because we need durable arms and he just isn’t that. Parker non tender is a little more confusing. However, it’s only a bad move in my opinion if they don’t spend that money another way, so relax angel fans and just wait until the end of the offseason to judge all these moves. Way to early to be critical
hk27
If one were to justify the decision made, Parker is a guy with declining stuff who has done better than his peripherals who is now 33. I’d imagine that they have tried to trade him somewhere, but it may be that no one was willing to offer meaningful value (possibly in anticipation of this outcome). Saving money probably is not a big thing, but clearing up the roster space for possible moves, more likely (one should hope).
GeoKaplan
That sounds right. Both pitchers are arb-controlled through 2020, which means their combined salaries would approximate $8M this season, $10M next. That allows a RP arm to be signed, or offsets a portion of SP signing.
callingoutdummies247
Parker to Mets or Canadiens
Angels50
Like the moves. Need to move on from Pitchers that can’t quite get us there. Both had somewhat successes. But can be replaced with younger, cheaper arms. This should lead to more money opening up for some P’s that can make an impact.
angelsfan1522
I don’t understand the Parker move but the shoemaker move makes perfect since he’s injury prone and is really in consistent his rookie year he went 16-4 and since then hes 24-28 he also had nerve damage last season. We can replace him with canning at the worst case I think the angels will be all in on pitching this offseason
