If you haven’t yet come across this recent profile of former Cardinals scouting director Chris Correa, via SI’s Ben Reiter, then you’ll certainly want to give it a read. The analytical guru ended up in federal prison after impermissibly accessing the computer systems of the Astros. While he’s still mostly remaining silent on details of that stunning episode, Correa offers a fascinating glimpse into his time behind bars.
The latest from the National League:
- While it’s hard to see the 2018 campaign as anything but a success for the Rockies, the organization faces some tough decisions in the offseason to come. One of those involves franchise cornerstone Nolan Arenado, who is entering his final season of arbitration eligibility. As Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports, extension scenarios have yet to be discussed by team and player. Arenado’s arb salary will force the sides to the bargaining table, but it’s not yet clear whether there’ll be a clear path to a long-term deal. It is certainly possible to imagine a trade scenario, though that’d be a tough call to make for the organization. For his part, Arenado says he loves playing in Colorado and anticipates remaining with the organization, but does acknowledge that “things can get a little iffy because of the business side of it.”
- As he wraps up his contract with the Braves, backstop Kurt Suzuki tells Gabe Burns of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (Twitter link) that he’d like to find a way back into the fold. The Atlanta organization has already struck a deal to retain Tyler Flowers, who has combined with Suzuki to form a solid and cost-effective duo. Continuing that situation surely holds some appeal, though it’s also quite reasonable to expect that the Braves front office will look into the acquisition of a top-tier option behind the dish. [RELATED: 2018-19 Market Snapshot: Catcher]
- Even as the Marlins make some changes to their coaching staff, they haven’t given indication that they’ll replace skipper Don Mattingly in his post. That said, Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets that there hasn’t been any effort on the part of the team to extend Mattingly’s contract, which is entering its final season. It’s certainly possible that’ll still come to pass, though it would hardly be surprising if the club preferred instead to maintain the status quo.

I personally would like to see the braves go after RT for our starting catcher. I know it’s unlikely but I think he would be a dramatic improvement and differences maker. Then we need to stock up on legit bullpen arms from the FA market. I’m pretty much dreaming cause the braves prob won’t do any of that, but whatever
cards81
I think if a team needs a catcher they should look at the cardinals Carson Kelly, obviously RT would be the best, but Kelly is young and ready to prove something. Great defensive catcher and his batting numbers are really good in triple A…he hasn’t had a chance to prove much in the MLB but I think with a little seasoning his bat will transfer to the bigs
cards81
ok JT…sorry
Mattimeo09
Jelly hasn’t shown much of anything with the bat in the major leagues. He’s hit well under .200 for the third straight year!
Cards would be selling low and not getting much back for him, which I doubt is what you had in mind
fourth_dimension
Kelly, Hudson or Weaver, and Gyorko to the Nationals for Rendon. Would need to be able to extend Rendon since he is going into his walk year.
stan lee the manly
I think this is a good trade for both sides, but Cardinals would probably need a bullpen arm added onto this for it to happen
timw3558
as a nats fan this I hope Rizzo is extending Rendon this offseason
Nuth88
Anyone who thinks 1)The Nats would give up Rendon is nuts and 2)The Cardinal offer is so laughable, it makes me wonder if that Card Fan’s Jorts are cutting off the blood flow to their brain….

With the departure of Yasmani Grandal via free agency this winter, I could see LAD making a pitch for Realmuto. Even with their deep farm system I’m not sure they’d be willing to give what MIA is expecting in return.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
I’m not sure about that. It depends on what the Marlins ask is. The Dodgers definitely have a ton of upper level talent they have to trade or lose. So if the ask starts with Verdugo and proceeds down who knows. I’m not implying Verdugo is in the same league as Robles etc., but I can see it happening depending on what the Marlins are asking for in the 2nd/3rd prospect. That said, I’m not sure if the Dodgers seriously broach that prospect with them being loaded behind the dish. Plus their history suggests they don’t sink their capital to win the offseason. They much prefer to access and address at the deadline.
RunDMC
Sorry, I’ll be that guy. Who is RT?
Slevin
Probably be JT Realmuto, but there’s no way of a deal to the Braves.
RunDMC
That is what I was figuring, but I saw multiple people using RT. While Realmuto is on the division rival Marlins, there’s enough enticing prospects that MIA wouldn’t mind facing him 18 games per year, if ATL is okay with facing their babies 18 games per year for the next half decade. Gulp.
bravesfan
Typo JT*. Sorry
jstepanik
I don’t think the new wave of GMs are as concerned about dealing within the division as their predecessors have historically been. In any deal, both sides take the risk of traded players coming back to haunt them.
Mjm117
Fish asked for Robles and more from the Nats prior to the trade deadline. Doubt the Braves would want to even entertain similar conversation.
Would take a huge haul to pry away JT within the division.
jorge78
Thanks RunDMC from all of us!
JJB
I think he means Ron Tingley or the late Ray Thomas of the Brooklyn Dodgers, neither who would make much sense in 2019!
cwsOverhaul
Love the Ron Tingley reference. Not a good Stratomatic player card to have on your squad some 30yrs ago

So who is the mysterious RT?

That is one hell of a story from SI about Chris Correa. Sobering and insightful.
If you’re interested in more than “who won what”, give it a read.
Thanks for the link, Jeff Todd.
paddyo furnichuh
It indeed was a good read.
If our society’s obsession with incarceration and sports being a “zero sum game” were discussed more often and openly, we’d be in a better place.
Bocephus
Andujar plus Cessa for Arenado.
c1234
Not to discredit Arenado or anything but you never know what a full season of Arenado away from coors would look like. Yankees might as well keep Andujar not sure why many want him replaced.
tharrie0820
For his career, Arenado has above average offensive numbers away from Coors, with a WRC+ of about 110, with his rookie season (68) dragging that down. Paired with his elite defense, he has a high ceiling with very high floor
twentyforty
And he just hit .240 away from Coors in 2018 and was a train wreck in the NLDS. If Colorado wants to pay for past performance they resign him. If they’re smart, they let someone else grossly overpay him.
minoso9
Arenado is a true Gold Glove defender and is very good with the bat at Coors Field. He is an excellent run producer and wants to win. But management has shelled out multi millions for a dismal bullpen (Shaw, Dunn, McGee, Davis) plus big long term deals for Blackman and Desmond. The Rox have top notch infield prospects in McMahon, Rodgers and Hampson and may also resign LeMahieu. Arenado could be traded for pitching, catching or 1B help. Hey, if we don’t trade him that’s fine too. But something has to give and somebody has to go.
minoso9
Hi Bocephus. Cessa can’t win- even in NY. Andujar can’t field but has occasional power. Forget it.
TradeAcuna
The braves need to overhaul their rotation and bullpen. If i was Zuk, I’d leave for a true contender.
tharrie0820
They don’t need to rebuild the rotation. you have Folty and soroka definitely locked in, newcomb and teheran. Wilson and Toussaint both shower enough to earn a chance to start
Dan_Oz
yeah can’t have dirty starters 🙂
BigFred
Link to showering statistics??
flyingwhiskey
I believe Wilson leads the league in sar
TradeAcuna
Teheran is gone and Newcomb needs to be gone. If they want to compete for a title, running a bunch of rookies and inexperienced pitchers will mean another quick exit for them. It still baffles me when people think they are ready to compete just because they got their artificial “playoff experience” out of the way. The Braves have proven all year they can’t beat good teams and there is no reason to believe that would be different with the current construction of the team.
VeryBraveFan
The Braves need a bonafide ace and a front line closer. Kimbrel comes to mind in the bullpen and he might be agreeable to come home to the south if he is paid enough. His presence would lengthen any bullpen. Your guess is as good as mine as far as a staff ace goes. (Folty aint it, though.) Zuk may not have much leverage with his age.
TradeAcuna
Folty an ace? Only idiots would think that!
steelerbravenation
Grandal
Realmuto
Perez
Suzuki
Should be the order in trying to acquire a catcher
I woulda much rather had Suzuki as the backup next year than Flowers but either way the Braves need an upgrade
Right field needs an upgrade as well wouldn’t mind Heyward coming back if the Cubs ate some of that contract would give the Braves best defensive OF in baseball and maybe coming home would help him out
SoCalBrave
I agree, although I don’t see a point at trying to get Realmuto since the Marlins (rightly) are asking for more than I’d be comfortable paying, but I guess asking doesn’t hurt. Instead of Heyward, how about kicking the tires on AJ Pollock. We can probably sign him for about what we would have to pay Heyward or just a little more and wouldn’t have to give up prospects. Pollock, Enciarte, Acuña, Duvall would give us just as good an outfield defensively and also better offensively than with Heyward
Sirsleepit
Don’t put heyward and Duvall in the same defensive catergory… it’s not close. That’s like comparing A. Simmons to Dansby. One is great and the other is good
SoCalBrave
No one is putting Heyward and Duvall in the same category. SteelerBraveNation has Heyward, Inciarte, and Acuña, I have Polloc, Inciarte and Acuña as the outfielders. In both scenarios Duvall would be the 4th outfielder. If anything, I’m saying that Heyward and Pollock are comparable defensively.
Aircool
I love how that article tries to play down his awareness that he was committing a crime…
Yeah, I bet he had no idea he was cheating either…. There is just no world that he doesn’t know he was being scummy, and now the goalposts are going to be moved to “I didn’t know it was a crime.”
Can’t say I feel bad for the guy. I don’t.
ghettotrout1
I think the punishment doesn’t seem to fit the crime though I mean he definitely did something crappy but like the article says its MLB baseball its not like he really affected real life. I know a lady who actually stole 300k in checks from her company and only got probation. Like how is stealing actual cash treated less bad than hacking into a baseball organizations draft rankings. Just seems a bit harsh to me.
lesterdnightfly
Aircool: That’s not what the article was implying, at all. Your inference is mistaken.
Palmerpark
Hey ward really? He isn’t opt out he will never make bank like that again.
