12:49pm: The Rangers actually informed Girardi that “they were going in another direction,” Heyman tweets.
9:54am: Joe Girardi has withdrawn from the Rangers’ managerial search, as Jon Heyman of Fancred reports and as Jeff Wilson of the Star-Telgram first suggested. As of now, it appears Girardi will work as a television analyst for the second straight season in 2019.
Girardi previously exited the derby to become the Reds’ next manager, which helped lead to David Bell’s hiring on Sunday. Bell was also a candidate with the Rangers, who are likely now down to six choices for their managerial job, per TR Sullivan of MLB.com. Aside from Girardi and Bell, the Rangers have reportedly discussed the position with Rocco Baldelli, Don Wakamatsu, Jayce Tingler, Brandon Hyde, Dusty Wathan and Joe Espada.
On paper, Girardi would have been an odd fit for either Cincinnati or Texas, given that neither team looks like a short-term contender. The 54-year-old most recently managed the Yankees from 2008-17, a decade-long span in which they went 910-710 in the regular season, earned eight playoff berths and won a World Series title (2009).
camdenyards46
He really doesn’t want to manage anywhere
Samuel
Sure he does……
He learned what Bill Belichick learned coaching the Browns football team – don’t try to coach/manage when a front office and/or management interferes, instead of supports, your efforts. Parcells tried to off Belichick to the screwy Jets owner. Belichick refused, quit, and went to work for Bob Kraft and the Patriots.
Gerardi is set for life financially. He’ll only go to a good situation. No need for him to lead a miserable life for 2-4 years where he can’t win, gets blamed for it, and fired.
When an employer interviews an applicant, if the applicant is qualified and established, he/she will be interviewing the employer.
Jason Jacobson
Sure, he “withdrew” from consideration. There is “no way” he was given the heads-up he wasn’t going to be hired and to save face by “withdrawing”…
JKB 2
Why would Joe Girardi need to “save face”?
eileenyankees9
JJ, ????
Joe doesn’t have to save face!!
Hiro
Is he in the running for any more jobs, manager or front office-related?
eileenyankees9
No, he is waiting for Boone
to get canned for leaving pitchers in too long all year, oh, yeah, wait, he won’t, get canned, Cashman gave
him A’s all across the board!
My Bad
tomrogic
He’s had one season, won 100 games and you’re still not happy? Fortunately Cashman dosn’t care what you think. Maybe you can just think about the past, and come back to the present when you’re ready to support your team again
MetsYankeesRedSox
Imagine being the guy or gal in her life….one screw up and “you’re OUT!”
eileenyankees9
I support my team, not the manager, you rude unhappy man, excuse me, kid!! lol
MetsYankeesRedSox
NEWSFLASH…the manager, along with coaching staff, is part of the team!
jdgoat
Just because they won 100 doesn’t make him a good manager. Maybe he’ll become a better game manager with more experience but I do think there were far too many mistakes in Boone’s first season in NY. And look at John Farrell. He was an awful manager yet they still made it to the postseason and he got canned.
tomrogic
If you support a team you support the whole team, including the manager. You may not like him, but if he’s good enough for Cashman, he should be good enough for you. And he is averaging 100 wins per season, so there is absolutely no reason for him to be fired.
eileenyankees9
Very True JD!!
MetsYankeesRedSox
Pssst Tom….
She’s a bandwagon fan from ’96
tomrogic
Unreal 100 wins still not happy. Almost as if she only supports the yankees because they win world series
Dad
Hell Mike Matheny won with LaRussa’s team. That first year doesn’t mean anything. Boone will be out by year 3!
eileenyankees9
MYR,
Lmao, go back to most
of your posts Mr. Hypocrate,
and read h each team including the ones in your username. You did
admit on a post way backto me that you were confused regarding what
TO DO ON WHEN RETRIEVING
ONE, so you just put all 3 teams down!
Just shows how mixed up you
you are!
You are only interested
in bashing posts, and agreeing with others
when they bash others.
You have no mind of ur

own, no identity of your
own.
driftcat28 2
Boone is terrible, he has no idea what he’s doing and can’t handle a pitching staff. Sure he won 100 games, but you or I or anyone else managing that team could win 100 games. Look at the embarrassment the ALDS was, that’s what matters most
JKB 2
Booney is not averaging 100 wins per season. You need more than 1 season to calculate an average.
3rdStrikeLooking
You are stupid.
eileenyankees9
Drift,
Thank You, you are the
man, and a man!!
Boone has no clue with
the bullpen. He has no clue when to have someone warming up. A disgrace along
with Larry Rothschild,
who never ever fixed a Yankees pitcher in his
life!!
The fans booing my posts
regarding Boone never
listen to anyone in the news on the radio, on tv do not understand his dumb mov
100 wins, well….over 250 homers, Judge throwing out runners out, Happ, Didi.
Andujar, a doubles machine, Torres, awesome HR rookie, Omg, Luuuke, etc, did Boone do any of those things? No, just chew gum and pick his left ear.
Anyone could have won
100 games with this
awesome team as stated, but but a real leader we did not have getting us over the
finish line!
Sorry for my typos, but
not sorry for being realistc!
eileenyankees9
ahhaaaa, Dad, you are so right, lol
eileenyankees9
Tom. seems I am not alone on my thoughts. oh yeah, no one cares about your idiotic replies along with the no identity fan that doesn’t have a mind of his own!
eileenyankees9
lolol, good one JKB

Just stfu
tomrogic
I’m not claiming that Boone is a great manager, i’m only trying to point out that the yankees had a great season, and Boone deserves more time. If the yankees had a terrible season then yes, boone should be fired, but they still won 100 games, and overall had a very good season, just unfortunate that the red sox are better. And i’m not a yankee fan but if Cashman thinks he’s good enough for the Yankees, then i think he will be. Cashman rarely gets it wrong
eileenyankees9
JD,
Priceless!
eileenyankees9
MYR,
And You’re Off The
Wagon!!
jstepanik
On Tues night when the WS opens in Boston, it will not matter whether the Yankees won 100 games or 68 games.
driftcat28 2
Lol I’m wishing Cashman realizes Boone was a mistake and brings Joe back. I’ll let it slide as a mistake by Cashman since he is decisions are usually good ones
eileenyankees9
Right?
Cashman never admits his mistakes, but getting rid of Sonny Gray would be a start for him, thank God!
PopeMarley
He can wait out the Cubs job.
Stratocaster
I think this might be what he’s doing. It makes sense.
Djones246890
He can’t wait out the Cubs job, but I highly doubt there will be a job to wait for. Maddon will likely get extended.
Djones246890
can*** not can’t.

I’m confused as to how Girardi exiting the derby to be the Rangers manager had anything to do with the Reds hiring Bell as theirs?
toomuchpie
Read it again.
duke1776
First the Reds and now the Ranger’s. He’s running out of options. Unless he’s holding out for the Angel’s job. Which I dont think he’ll get. The Angel’s want someone younger.
PopeMarley
Where has it been written that the Angels “want someone younger”?
darkstar61
Not sure it’s been written, but it does seem at least a fair assumption based off the names they have been linked to
JKB 2
Girardi is not running out of options. He will return as an analyst on MLB and he will be considered for future managerial openings next year as well.
dugmet
His salary demands prob exceed what the Reds and Rangers are willing to oay. Is Girardi waiting for Maddon’s contract to expire — and hoping for $4-6m/year?
deweybelongsinthehall
He has the right to choose. Money is not his problem so while he can try to command $$$, my guess is he’s waiting for “his job” which likely is in Chicago or New York.
pjc1966
He’s not going back to NY. George and Billy are both dead and buried.
Replacing Maddon, I could believe that. People are pretty frustrated in Chicago, believing the team is under achieving.
Djones246890
The team is not underachieving, and most people understand that. Maddon isn’t the problem. He led the team to the playoffs, every single year, and won a World Series.
Some of the players they have just aren’t AS good as everyone thought, like Happ, Russell, Schwarber, etc. That’s not Maddon’s fault.
Even despite that, they were still in the playoffs, plus they had a ton of injuries.
The players that aren’t performing just need to go. Plain and simple. This past year, he should win “Manager of the year.”
deal1122
Cora is the manager of the year, hands down
jdgoat
I’d think it has to go to Cash or Melvin. Anybody could’ve got that Red Sox team into the postseason, especially with that payroll.
MetsYankeesRedSox
@Djones246…
Agreed! All the present Cubs fans that still cheer for Schwarber, Happ and Russell are probably alot like those Cubs fans after 1908 that still cheered for Tinker, Evers and Chance.
JKB 2
Actually Maddon has the Cubs over achieving. People may be frustrated with the Cubs but that is on The Theo Trio not Maddon.
JKB 2
I agree. Maddon should actually be comsidered for manager of the year not blamed for getting the Cubs as far as he did.
JKB 2
Cora in the American League yea
JKB 2
Not with 108 wins
deweybelongsinthehall
Who said the Yankees ir Cubs? While those are the obvious glamour jobs and I do think at least one will be available for the 2020 season and the Mets job currently sucks, you never know what motivates Girardi. If not a return to pinstripes, imagine the glory of returning the Mets to the WS and taking the back page NY headlines away from Hal and Cash…
mistry gm
I believe the Cubs next manager will be David Ross
ASapsFables
A distinct possibility. The path could be quicker should he wind up as the Cubs bench coach in the event that current one Brandon Hyde is successful in securing one of the remaining managerial positions this offseason. Hyde reportedly remains in contention for the Twins opening as we post. Speculation also has David Ross being a possible candidate there as well.
ASapsFables
JKB: “Over achieving”. lol
The “over” that Joe Maddon has performed most often in his career is to consistently over manage.
bobtillman
No Joe doesn’t have any holes in his shoes. But he’s likely waiting for a situation where he can have some impact, and become a hero. That’s not likely in Texas or Cincy. LAA works; so does Chi if Maddon gets booted.
He’s a rare bird, the kind of manager who actually squeezes a few more wins out of any roster. But he’s also a bit too “old school” for his own good. And the personality is a bit acerbic; he could take some serious lessons from Francona.
Like all managers, he’s less “good or bad” than he is “good or bad” for a certain situation. Reports have him making 1M from the MLB network, and he gets to go home every night. But he’s also the competitive sort. He probably wants back in, but only in certain spots.
eileenyankees9
Dug,
That sounds like the scenario
with him now. Why should he just take any job for less!
padreforlife
He’s not getting that dough and that’s why he dropped out of both Reds and Ranger jobs. The days of managers making that $ are over.
Judge Judy
Contract offer must have banned the phrase “it’s not what you want.”
Yanks2
Why can’t they fire Aaron Boone and bring back Joe?
adshadbolt
He’s gonna take the angels job. He was in NY with eppler
angels fan 3
Lol
mets2424
He wants the Mets job. Waiting 1 more year
baycommuter 2
Smart move. The Cubs’ fan base is divided over Maddon and Girardi keeping himself in the the wings makes the non-renewal more palatable. Girardi is not only an ex-Cub, he was born in Illiniois and went to Northwestern.
Bocephus
That is correct, there were actually people on here a month ago claiming he grew up a Cardinals fan.
Senioreditor
I think he’s waiting for the Phillies job to open.
Kenleyfornia74
He is really waiting for a good team.
tonysdog01
He’s old school. He’s withdrawing because he knows he’s not getting the job. He may just be done as a manager.
jonnyj
Reds didn’t offer enough money

On a selfish note, I would love it if he’s on MLB Network next year. Always learn something when he’s on.
MetsYankeesRedSox
Seeing how well Girardi did with a Marlins team whose owner didn’t really want to win, imagine what he could do with the Marlins ownership that WANTS to win?!!
One more year or less of Donnie and then here comes Joe!
Old User Name
I have heard Joe and Jeter aren’t exactly the best of friends.
luisplaysgames
Maybe he coach upincoming young team.
ASapsFables
More convinced than ever that Joe Girardi is waiting on the Cubs. This is the second managerial opening withdrawal for him in the past few days while the Angels have also signed their next skipper. Can’t blame Girardi at this stage of his career and with a young family to think about. The TV deal works for him until he can get his preferred job back on the North Side of Chicago. With his resume, he’s deserved the opportunity to pick and choose and it’s become more apparent that choice might be the Cubs with Joe Maddon entering his lame duck season in 2019.
fasbal1
He would have taken either job but withdrew to save face when he found out he wasn’t the choice.
ASapsFables
It pretty evident that Girardi will take one of two jobs at this stage of his life. Return to the Yankees who he still roots for and where he continues to reside in nearby Purchase, NY OR return to his Chicago area roots.
Girardi was born and raised in the Peoria, Illinois area, attended Northwestern University and then was drafted by the Cubs in 1986. He met his wife Kim when both were attending Northwestern, they dated for several years and eventually were married in Evanston, Il. while he was playing for the Cubs in his first go-around with them. I suspect that once his kids are all college age (his youngest is 11 or 12) he might then consider other opportunities…or maybe not since he is pretty much set for life financially.
JKB 2
Well the Reds had him as first choice so there goes fasbal1’s argument out the window
fasbal1
He is perfect fit for every job but apparently everyone doesn’t want him.
JKB 2
How is he a perfect fit for everyone?
fasbal1
hes not that’s the point, all the geniuses on here kept saying he was going to every open position, he probably wont get a job
Philliesfan4life
How about Girardi for the twins, A young team with an experienced manager?
lwayne
The Rangers kept Crackhead too long with a really good team and fired Bannister too quick with a really bad team. JD ran the baseball mind off. Perhaps JD should go.. He does not want anyone who would oppose his way.
driftcat28 2
Way to early theory – 2020 managerial carousel – Girardi to Cubs, Maddon to Yankees, Boone to ESPN
619bird
Waiting for Cubs, Cardinals or Maybe the Nationals job to open up. You’re basically on the firing line the second you take the job in DC. lol
MetsYankeesRedSox
On my local FOX network here in Maine at 3:00pm is a show called Walk-Off Stories.
Hour show about the ’03 Yanks/Sox ALCS along with Eileen’s favorite manager!
fasbal1
This reminds me of a lady I knew years ago who had one leg longer than the other
tsc32
I’m fine with this. Girardi is a good manager but I’m don’t think he’s the right fit. We need a guy who can really develop and lead young guys as we continue through this rebuild phase. Girardi strikes me more as a guy you put in charge of a good veteran team to try and push them over the top to a championship.
GarryHarris
In 2006, Joe Giardi managed the Marlins. Under his watch, he had the best rookie class ever:
1B Mike Jacobs
2B Dan Uggla
SS Hanley Ramirez
LF Josh Willingham
CF Reggie Abercrombie
RF Jeremy Hermidia
OF Cody Ross
SP Anibal Sanchez
SP Scott Olsen
SP Ricky Nolasco
My point is that Joe Giardi seems like a great Manager for a young team. How many Managers completely disregard players in their own system for old players in someone else’s team?
ASapsFables
In fact, that job was Girardi’s first as a manager. The Marlins fired him following his only season there in 2006 season after the team posted a 78-84 which was remarkable considering a team payroll of $15MM, less than what many individual players were making annually. Girardi actually had the Marlins in Wild Card contention for most of the season and despite the losing record he was named the NL manager of the year. That offseason, Girardi was a top contender for two managerial spots, the Yankees and Cubs. Many thought that he was going to replace Joe Torre in the Bronx when the Yankees were upset in the ALDS. To everyone’s surprise, George Steinbrenner elected to keep Torre on board. Girardi was also a favorite for the Cubs job but Jim Hendry elected to go with veteran Lou Piniella instead. A year later Girardi did wind up with the Yankees gig and has resided exclusively in the NY area ever since.
Btw-This is not first offseason that Girardi has turned down other managerial gigs. He declined an opportunity with the Nationals in the same offseason he was hoping for the Yankee or Cub gig. He also turned down the Orioles when they fired their manager during the 2007 season. He cited his family as reasons for turning down both jobs, preferring either Chicago or NY as managerial destinations where he had spent the most time as a player.
sportsjunkie24
Orioles
ASapsFables
Girardi already turned down a chance to manage the Orioles in 2007 while he was a TV analyst in NY. What makes you think he will like the option any better for 2019 and beyond?
