The Giants have outrighted five players off of their 40-man roster, the club announced and Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area was among those to cover (Twitter links). The moves opened space for a handful of players to be moved back onto the roster from the 60-day DL.
Four of the players to be bumped — infielder Chase d’Arnaud, righty Casey Kelly, utilityman Kelby Tomlinson, and infielder Miguel Gomez — are now free agents. The former two had the right to reject an assignment, while the latter pair became eligible for minor-league free agency upon departing the MLB roster.
A fifth player, right-hander Tyler Herb, was also outrighted. In his case, though, he’ll remain in the San Francisco organization. He has been assigned to Triple-A Sacramento, which is where he spent most of the 2018 campaign.
Tomlinson, 28, had the lengthiest and most notable tenure with the Giants of the players outrighted today. He never quite matched his promising debut effort, however, ending his time in San Francisco with a .265/.331/.332 slash line over 687 plate appearances.
As for d’Arnaud, a light-hitting journeyman infielder, he’ll look for another opportunity to function as a depth piece. The 29-year-old Kelly, once a prospect of some note, allowed just eight earned runs in his 23 2/3 innings with the Giants but surrendered a 4.76 ERA over 24 Triple-A starts. Gomez has received scant MLB opportunity. He played mostly at the two highest levels of the minors in 2018, drawing just nine walks in 437 plate appearances while posting a .291/.304/.418 slash line.
pinkerton
looks like they got rid of those fellas
gretencorda
What gave that away?

Norm English
just a start, but a good one
HotDamnShazam
So long Specs, Alen Henson basically made you redundant
gilgunderson
Abiatal Avelino made Specs redundant more than anyone.
JoeyPankake
Not Longoria, eh? Bummer.
Houston We Have A Solution
They owe Longoria an insane amount of money lol.
antibelt
Insane amount??? Not at all. Yhe amount of pay still owed to him is similar per year to Martin Prado.
Dodgethis
While he isn’t owed an insane amount of money, it would be insane to outright him.
homeunderdog
they need to bring tomlinson back. gomez and darnaud are quality util infielders too
JoeyPankake
Players like these are a dime a dozen and can be had on minors deals with invites to spring training.
pustule bosey
Tomlinson has no power and last year was pretty underwhelming contact wise which leaves just defense, which he was ok but nothing of note. in years past he was great in the clutch and a useful depth piece but with the club looking to make larger changes he really doesn’t have a place on the roster.
barrybonds1994
You said Gonzalez at the end of the article but it’s Gomez, just a heads up
antibelt
Apparently one Hispanic is just as good as another. Just another Trump writer who clumps as all together.
Jeff Todd
I have mixed up common names of many different origins in the past, so I don’t believe this particular error speaks to any such attitude on my part. It was still poor form to make the mistake, to be sure.
Sadler
Don’t feed the racist trolls.
wholenewworld
Agree with Sadler. Regulars know Jeff’s character through his writing and his forthright communication on the comment boards.
The only reason I know Miguel Gómez is because I watch the Giants farm. No reason most would be in any way familiar with a 25-year-oldminor league journeyman infielder with fewer than 50 career MLB AB’s.
dvmin98
@antibelt Apparently you’re an a.ss
stubby66
This the season to give up on guys that could be the next Muncy or Aguilar
andrewf
Chase d’Arnaud was good in AAA this year with pop and plate discipline, might be that guy after all. Or he could be a utility guy but he has hit 16% less gb than last year on a rate basis, tons of flyballs could make him a deep sleeper.
baseball1600
So glad Kelby is gone. Bad defense, bad bat.
baseball1600
I hope the giants just DFA Melancon. He has no hope. He can’t stay healthy and when he’s healthy he just serves up L’s. Would rather see Ray Black or honestly even Tyler Beede be taking those L’s than Melancon.
antibelt
Stupid. Melancon played a lot better this year compared to 2017. Hopefully he can rebound completely next season.
baseball1600
Yeah, sure he did. Coming from the guy who calls Brandon Belts contract “one of the worst in baseball”.
antibelt
It is one of the worst in baseball. He can’t stay healthy, and he’s not productive enough to be traded. Posey will need to play first significantly starting in 2020, so Belt isn’t needed.
Jean Matrac
If Belt’s contract is “one of the worst in baseball”, then Eric Hosmer’s contract must be one of the worst in history. Compare the two:
Belt: career .811 OPS, 124 OPS+, .189 ISO, 125 wRC+ owed $51.6M over the next 3 years.
Hosmer: career .720 OPS, 99 OPS+, .154 ISO, 109 wRC+ owed $84M over the next 4 years, and then if he doesn’t opt out, will be owed another $39M over the next 3 years. Potentially 7 years at $123M.
You’ll have to post the stats and contract numbers of a comparable player who’s signed for significantly less before you can convince me that Belt’s contract, while a bit pricey, is anywhere near the worst in baseball.
pustule bosey
they should eat some cash and move him for some lottery tickets. he is not a bad bullpen piece now that he is off the dl but they overpaid for a closer that isn’t really a closer any more
thelastonetodie
Just thinking the same thing. He didn’t have a horrible year, and paying him all that money.. he will be sticking around and a good candidate to bounce back this year
bobtillman
Because you have to have warm bodies, EVERY team has about 5 players that they could cut without much incident. Bad teams have 8-10; the Giants will have more coming. So will many teams.
Talented is the GM who can sift the chaff and find a Max Muncy or a Joey Wendle…..but I don’t see any of those guys in the group released today.
Syndergaarden Cop
garbage got cut
mikedickinson
Wonder what would have happened if Kelly had continued to play short stop…
aussiegiants53
Something tells me they’ll resign Tomlinson and Kelly to minor league deals, I’m guessing they’ll try their luck again with Julian Fernandez
pustule bosey
i won’t even try to guess what they are going to try to do, once a new gm/pres of ops comes on board we’ll see what direction the FO moves
nentwigs
Melancon can opt out of his contract after the World Series. I wonder how much $$ under the table would “convince” him to walk away?
Rickey O'Sunnyvale
The Giants are ireliphant..
turner9
They should change their name to the Samsqanches
holecamels35
The Giants roster building is essentially like putting duct tape on the Titanic. Wonder if they’ll finally admit their losses and rebuild. So many big contracts with no value.
jbigz12
Giants are at least losing pence, cutch, and the rest of Matt cain’s Money off their payroll. They reset the luxury tax and hopefully cueto and shark will be healthy. They only need an entire outfield, a couple relievers, a starter, Evan Longoria to play like it’s 2008 and then you’ve got yourself a team.
ThatBallwasBryzzoed
Mot really news when they suck. They are barely considered role players.
woodstock005
All giants fan
No giants not rebuilding
Safe face
Giants are three players away from Ws
or 25 players away???
Keep signing big contracts old folks in their 30s
Lets get Bryce Harper and Adam winwright

In a real world
Giants should get
Kim Ng
snotrocket
Why is that? To appease the San Francisco PC crowd?

Casey Kelly – The prized gem the Padres received in the Adrian Gonzalez trade. I remember the scouting report of this blue chipper saying ‘throws low 90s fastball, good curveball, great control.’ His 5+ ERA in the low minors proved he had great stuff and I couldn’t wait to see him dominate in the bigs. F Casey Kelly. Then we trade Rizzo for a #5 starter. At least we still have Javier Guerra. He’ll turn 27 in AA next year. Solid glove but no bat. He’s still working out some things. Great trade. 🙁
Cardinals17
All of those players will be considered as starters for The Cardinals next season!!! That’s how president of baseball operations John Mozeliak works!!!
Gobbysteiner
Specs was a fan favorite but I guess his bat was just too bad this year. Shame I really liked him. Good luck in your career Kelb!
imgman09
God bless ya Kelby!
