As he prepares for the World Series, Red Sox right-hander Nathan Eovaldi says he has yet to have any talks with the club regarding a deal that would keep him off of the open market, John Tomase of WEEI.com reports. The hurler says he’d “love to be back,” though unsurprisingly it looks as if he’ll test the open market first. It’s certainly possible to imagine a fit with Boston, though the same could be said of quite a few other organizations as well.
Here’s more from the American League:
- There’s some belief that the Rays will land Cuban righty Sandy Gaston, according to MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro (Twitter links). Two other top players, the Mesa brothers, landed with the Marlins today. The Orioles had been seen as a chief competitor for these and other top young players who are eligible to sign rather than entering the draft. To date, though, the club has largely kept its war chest intact. Frisaro says it’s believed that it would cost Tampa Bay around $2MM to secure the amateur.
- The lack of a suitable defensive position has long been the primary concern with Tigers slugger Nicholas Castellanos. As Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press writes, GM Al Avila says the current plan remains to keep Castellanos in right field, where he has “made some strides.” As Fenech writes, though, there are some good practical reasons to consider utilizing Castellanos at first base, where he’d be less of a concern defensively and wouldn’t clog up a spot in the outfield for other other players the club would like to get a look at. Of course, the first base position is spoken for, at least for part of the time, by Miguel Cabrera.
- Despite a disappointing end to the 2018 season, the Astros enter the winter with a great deal of confidence in their existing roster, as Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. Unsurprisingly, though, GM Jeff Luhnow identified starting pitching and catching as two areas that will need to be addressed. In other Astros news, the organization is expected to retain all of skipper A.J. Hinch’s coaches, Luhnow tells Rome (via Twitter). All are already under contract, per the GM. Of course, bench coach Joe Espada has received strong interest from other organizations as a managerial candidate, so it’s still possible the club will need to make a new hire.

So is that a no for Harper? @JeffLuhnow
ldfanatic
I hope it’s a no. That contract is going to sink whatever team signs him.
jbigz12
If Gaston lands with the Rays that’d be an absolute ridiculous outcome for Baltimore. We’re going to be trading this money for fringe minor leaguers. If you think there’s any chance Gaston can become a very good major league pitcher you offer him whatever it takes.
simschifan
Well no ones slick as Gaston and no ones quick as Gaston so I want him on my team
z3rogs
I see what you did there
#Fantasygeekland
Yeah, they really need to use up all their slot money to clean out the rest of the available international free agents. If that means signing gaston they shouldn’t hesitate
dimitrios in la
Yep. Whatever it takes. Otherwise the Gausman deal looks downright stupid.
xabial
“The question isn’t if Gaston can pitch. It’s whether he will be a starter or pitch out of the bullpen one day. most skeptic scouts wonder if he’ll throw enough strikes.”
“fastball clocked at 97 mph, not uncommon to sit 94-95. This type of velocity’s rare in any market; some scouts wonder if he’ll be able to command the high velocity on a consistent basis.”
“terms of secondary pitches, belief is those will develop once he signs and receives daily academy instructions.”
Good luck signing him. looked him up, to see what the fuss was about. Seems legit. Hope you sign him!
Paraphrased to the best I could. m.mlb.com/prospects/2018?list=int

To summarize: 16 year old who can throw 94-95, and tops out at 97 mph. The control concern and need to define his secondary pitches.
Question. Can this 16 year old throw harder than most ball players back then..?? think this stuff is interesting, kept hearing his name; sure enough, he’s the last top INT prospect available. Really cool he’s 16, and throws this hard. How common is it for 16 year olds to hit that mid that on the radar gun

I don’t think the Orioles lost the Mesa brothers and probably Gaston bids only because of money, we have to remember than Miami and Tampa have a large Cuban community, that is a very important fact for those players to consider, plus the weather in Florida is very similar to Cuba, don’t get me wrong, I am a hard die Orioles fan and I would love to see those players playing for us IMHO
stymeedone
Sounds like you’re justifying failure. If location had value in their decision, you just bid that much higher than the other guy. What’s Baltimore saving their $6+MM for?
jlahman
Orioles…no GM…no Manager… just a sad sad team that’s goin nowhere!
brooksnumber5is1
International market is done for the year, so no teams will even trade for the Orioles leftover amounts. So did they not over bid so they could simply save that money?
CardsNation5
Cabrera will be the DH with Victor Martinez retiring…
jbigz12
You’d think that’d be the case for 90% of the season. You can shuffle castellanos back out to left or a few ugly games at 3rd for inter league play if you don’t wanna miss one of their bats.
Polish Hammer
I know they’re in the division but I wouldn’t doubt somehow the Indians end up with Castellanos.
daman2032
50% DH for miggy 50 at first
40 percent nick castelonos at DH 40%at first and 20% in other position.
metfan3324
How good would Castellanos look in a N.Y Met uniform? And what would it cost the Mets?
stymeedone
@cardsnation
Miggy will have some say in where he plays. Part time DH, maybe. Full time would be a complete surprise.
BlueSkyLA
I wonder if any Dodgers are preparing for the World Series?
BlueSkyLA
Down-voted for truth. You gotta love this place!

Dear Rangers,
Please sign a pitcher.
Love,
Everyone and everything.
jbigz12
A pitcher? They only have one starter on their current roster that you feel semi comfortable with. The rangers should be taking a page out of the tigers book and be signing every reclamation project they can get their hands on. Look at Jaime Garcia, Lynn, pomeranz Etc. they need help. Maybe one becomes mike goers.
jbigz12
FIERS.**
#Fantasygeekland
I don’t really think Lynn is a reclamation project- NYY was willing to trade for him at the deadline, so there should be interested contenders.
jbigz12
It’s true. Lynn is a stretch for a reclamation project but he could give them innings for a few years at a reasonable cost and/or have upside to flip at the deadline for another prospect or two. They can and should certainly look a tier lower than those 3 I listed too. They’d be throwing out the likes of Yovani Gallardo and Bartolo colon if the season ended tomorrow.
jbigz12
Started** it’s late….

Astros will trade for JT
#Fantasygeekland
Lots of teams will be interested in an elite catcher. They’d need to outbid everyone else, which wouldn’t be insignificant especially with a weak catcher market.
Adam6710
He retired over 10 years ago. Why would the Astros even want him, he’s 50 years old now.

Of course Eovaldi is saying the right things but will play it out. He deserves to see what the market will pay. The team? Any acceptable offer at this point would have to be an overpay.
lovethatdirtyh20
Dewey, Eovaldi is going to be a rich man. He’s proven he can pitch in Boston and pitch well. Sox have to make a good attempt to sign him. He’d also be crazy not to play the market.
deweybelongsinthehall
LTDH20, The team has five days after the WS ends and hopefully they’ll agree to discuss after he sees what his market is. What do they offer now? He’s still an injury risk with two TJ surgeries already under his belt. Both sides have incentives to work it out but they each will first try to determine what is reasonable. Perhaps a Tim Wakefield like perpetual deal where if he stays healthy another guaranteed year at starter numbers gets added on? Start at 3 years? He may believe he’s entitled to 5 but his history does suggest a huge risk. Thus the suggestion to get creative.
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
He’s gone. He’ll test the market some team will pay him like a number one starter and the Sox won’t take that gamble for a number three guy four guy.
deweybelongsinthehall
Gary, you could be right but last year teams finally showed restraint and his injury history when combined with his suddenly becoming a stud certainly brings a high level of concern. It only takes one team but time will tell. He’s not in my view getting a straight long term, high average value deal. To get top dollar in even a short term deal, there likely will be team protectors, be it performance or injury (Lackey type) based.
MetsYankeesRedSox
You’re probably right Gary.
Sox have been burned on one big contract for an ex Tampa Bay pitcher.
I say he’s gone too.
deweybelongsinthehall
MYR. Why loop David Price and Eovaldi together? One came up through the Tampa system whereas the other just had a cup of coffee with the MLB team.
deweybelongsinthehall
BSR – I try to give respect and don’t remember all of the trolls who can always change their sign on the way I originally was “Empiresam”. I got a new phone a while back and just decided to push my belief that older generation players have been overlooked (Evans, Tiant, Munson and Garvey all belong in the HOF IMHO just to name a few).
Berischa
I don’t think the Orioles lost the Mesa brothers and probably Gaston bids only because of money, we have to remember than Miami and Tampa have a large Cuban community, that is a very important fact for those players to consider, plus the weather in Florida is very similar to Cuba, don’t get me wrong, I am a hard die Orioles fan and I would love to see those players playing for us IMHO
jdgoat
Maybe they’ll go for the Asian market then. They can scoop up Kikuchi(?) and he’d probably be able to slot straight into their rotation. If he comes over and has immediate success, they could probably get a boatload for him to help their rebuild.
slider32
Eovaldi will be rewarded this winter, he has the upside that every contender needs to get to the world series. He is one of the main reasons the Sox are in the series with what he has done in the playoffs.
sportsfan101
Why would Boston be focusing on anything besides winning the World Series? They have plenty of time after to talk about resigning eovaldi. I hope he’s back but I’d rather a WS win first.
bobtillman
Exactly. Teams in the WS have a shorter window, obviously, to get their 40-mans together and prep for the off season, so a lot of that stuff is getting done at the Asst. GM level by Boston and LA. But the big stuff like Eovaldi has to wait.
Nate’s an interesting case, both in the WS and off season. I’m not even sure any team can get insurance on him, he’s been so torn up.
jdgoat
Well, I’m sure the GM’s have a plan and know what they’re going to do. Sure they probably aren’t actively negotiating extensions, but it’s not like they have much of an impact on the series from here on out.
Adam6710
Why the Assistant GMs? What do the GMs have to do this week besides watch the games? I’m sure they’re working every day to improve their clubs for 2019.
Work doesn’t stop for the GMs just because their team is playing– it doesn’t stop during the season, either. By your logic the Assistant GM is doing all the work from March through October!
Pretty big paycheck those GM’s get just to work 4 months out of the year!
Polish Hammer
These front offices don’t wake up the day after the series and make decisions on the 40man roster, those decisions are mostly made all year. They’re already knowing whose contracts will be up and working on finalizing the roster for the next year as well.
User 4245925809
Exactly.. Long term implications instead of playing with fantasy money. After 2019, Both the Sale and Porcello deals expire and what is the plan then? Is it to run Eovaldi and Price as the 1-2 if Eovaldi is brought back and let Sale-Porcello walk?
Better attempt resign Sale and let Eovaldi walk than give him (guessing) 15m aav over 3y that would probably have to be doubled in both salary and years to retain Sale?
Many things to ponder as a GM.
deweybelongsinthehall
JohnSilver: a lot depends on the team doctors. Both Eovaldi and Sale have huge risks. Can they “afford” to sign both? Can they “afford” not to? Teams have a large management team in place because the money at stake is so much. Make costly moves and you become another Ben Cherington.
tealmarlin
Damn I wanted Gaston in Miami also.
