1:00pm: The Rangers have announced that Banister has been relieved of his duties. Wakamatsu will finish out the season as the interim manager.
12:42pm: The Rangers will not bring manager Jeff Banister back for a fifth season in 2019, reports Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. Banister is under contract for next season, but he’ll earn his reported $950K salary while someone else takes the helm for the Rangers, it seems. Grant notes that Banister will not finish out the season, and bench coach Don Wakamatsu will likely serve as the interim skipper.
It’s a jarring fall for Banister, the 2015 American League Manager of the Year. He guided the Rangers to a pair of winning records and a consecutive American League Division Series appearances in 2015-16 — his first two at the helm of a Major League organization. The 2017 Rangers disappointed but hung around in the race until September, ultimately finishing at 78-84. The Rangers have ensured a worse record than that in 2018 with 88 losses already in the books.
Certainly, it’d be unfair to place the entirety of the 2018 team’s failures on Banister’s shoulders. He was scarcely afforded a rotation to work with as the Rangers performed a series of half-measures last offseason, declining to enter a definitive rebuild but also paring back payroll and signing a series of stopgaps for the rotation. Texas came out of the gates strong with a three-year deal for Mike Minor to return to a starting role, but that was paired with low-cost additions of Doug Fister, Matt Moore and Bartolo Colon. Moore, perhaps, could’ve been considered an upside play, but pairing that unit with Minor and the returning Cole Hamels never looked like anywhere near enough to have a realistic shot at contending in 2018.
That said, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Jeff Wilson reported in a detailed column yesterday that Banister’s communication skills with his players had come under fire recently, with pitchers sometimes not knowing when their next start would be while some position players would find themselves in the lineup having previously been assured a day off. Texas also burned through several closers very quickly under Banister’s watch, with Shawn Tolleson flaming out in 2016 after being used on five consecutive days to close out the 2015 regular season. Sam Dyson, another bullpen workhorse under Banister, had dismal 2017 results after a heavy workload in 2016, though he’s since bounced back in San Francisco.
Wakamatsu, Grant further tweets, figures to become a candidate to take over the club on a full-time basis in 2019 and beyond. That said, the Rangers will surely interview candidates from outside the organization as they look for a developmentally-inclined skipper to help them through some degree of a rebuilding process. It’s not clear whether the Rangers will retain any of the current coaching staff, though the fact that Wakamatsu will be considered as a replacement bodes well for his chances of returning in some capacity.
Bring back Ron Washington
I agree! When i worked at the ballpark, always enjoyed running into Wash, he was always very nice to me when i saw him. Plus he was very likable around the stadium
Hire Phil Nevin he is the best choice
True THAT !
Agreed
Yes, bring him back..
Cocaine Ron!
Is this sarcasm or actual feelings towards the man?
Bring back Ted Williams head!
Shame on you
Braves might empty their wallets to keep him.
Absolutely not. That idiot left Nelson Cruz in instead of bringing in Endy Chavez as a defensive replacement And that’s why we lost the ‘11 World Series.
That’s stupid.
But he also let the Rangers run up the score on the Orioles in the famous 30 to 3 game. That’s just awful sportsmanship.
I don’t know where Ron is now, but I’m sure glad he’s not in Arlington.
Tonight’s forecast:a Freese is coming!
Blaming a guy for “running up the score” is ridiculous. This is pro sports – if a Team doesn’t like being beaten 30-3, don’t get beaten 30-3.
It’s not little league where kids feelings are being preserved.
3rd base coach in Atlanta.
(This is in response to xabial’s initial/deleted? comment about Ron Washington “taking” the Rangers to consecutive World Series, the downvotes, and why people didn’t give a reason.)
The players took the team to consecutive World Series; Ron Washington had very little impact on their performance, at least that couldn’t be duplicated by another manager.
Looks like the Rangers were tied for the 8th-best record back in 2010. The worst teams in baseball in 2010 were the Pirates (managed by John Russell) and the Mariners (managed by Don Wakamatsu and Daren Brown).
If Ron Washington managed the 53-109 Pirates, how many more wins do you think they would have had? If John Russell managed the 90-72 Rangers, how many less wins do you think they would have had?
The 1996 Tigers went 53-109, finishing 39 games behind the Yankees, who went 92-70 and won the World Series. If Joe Torre and Buddy Bell had managed the other team that year, how much of a difference would it have made in terms of wins/losses?
The only way I can think of on how to quantify a quality manager or not would be to compile a MANAGER’s pythagorean record, similar to how they do for teams in the standings. I’ve yet to see this, but being able to see how a manager’s teams performed on a yearly basis compared to their “predicted” record would be interesting to see who was above or below their predicted records the most. Then ask why.
I like your response. I was having cold feet people are capable of having a civil discussion which you clearly demonstrated. Been taking all kinds of beatings, I’ll bring my post back from dead via copy
For the record, I am and still Ron Washington fan. TEX been hovering in mediocrity ever since he left. (First time this decade they’ve had back-to-back losing seasons; Banister’s been on the helm for five years, or half a decade.)
From what I’ve read about Ron Washington, he seems like a quality person — mistakes and all. I don’t have the answers on how to quantify a quality manager, and that was my only idea above. I don’t know if I’d want my favorite team to hire Washington to manage the team (maybe, maybe not), but as a coach? Definitely.
Fair enough I can concur to that. He’s the Braves’ third base coach now, seems to be doing a dam good job.
Personally I love his enthusiasm and his emotions. He always seems genuinely excited to be on a baseball field. We need more like him.
I’ve never seen a major league managers tenure with a club end the way his did, in such a bizarre way. (Not for incompetency) Hope gets a chance.
I still echo those feelings, but I appreciate your your civility. Going to the World Series is more impressive than winning Manager of the Year, three years ago IMO. (Despite the outcome)
As some one who lives near Arlington (Keller) and has seen many Ranger games…. Bring Warsh back! And yes we pronounce it Warshington.
Tom Landry would be proud!!!! LOL
That’s a cool idea. Doing stats on a manager. WAR and all that other jazz.
Einstein would be proud! It’s all mathematics. In a parallel world it was Cubs/Red Sox in the ’03 series, the way it was suppose to be!
That’s actually a very good idea.
There are two frontiers that advanced analytics are working hard towards – quantifying a Managers contribution, and qualifying the mental aspect. We’re probably a while away from getting anywhere near, but it’s a horizon thing at least.
Bad example in that John Russell couldn’t break .500 with the 1927 Yankees.
Solid point otherwise.
Yeah bring back the guy that handed the cardinals the world series Commissioners trophy.
1. Nelson Cruz in right field
2. Let’s walk Pujols who had 5 hits the whole series
3. Walk Pujols to pitch to David freese who hit a rough .530
3.5 Berkman hit about .440. He walked to him.
4. Brought in a rookie pitcher in the 11th inning of game 6. David Freese smashed a 430ft home run. First time in Joe bucks career he had a good call in homage of his father.
Mark Lowe was not a rookie pitcher. Quite the contrary.
#KeepWashInTheATL
Why announce this now? Guy’s still got to manage for another 10 days. Pretty awkward and embarrassing.
Did you read the article? “Banister will not finish out the season”
Haha. I, in fact, did *not* read the article. Whoops!
Thumbs up for admitting that and not personaly attacking someone after you made the mistake. Good job.
Sometimes I’m so stoned that I instantly forget what I read.
lmao, haaaa
It’s kinda like zoning out for about a half mile driving
omg, keep the tunes blasting
Wakamatsu finishing the season. Banister has left the Ballpark.
…..and Elvis has left the building.
Lord, I hope they don’t bring Ron Washington back…
player/manager Adrian Beltre.
That would be fun.
But no one will touch his hair or head, only one stipulation!
You’re not talking about Ted’s cryogenically frozen head, are you Elaine?
lol no, !!
thanks for the laughs, I enjoy them MYR
Beltre couldn’t manage a mall kiosk.
Who cares
You know whats worse? You, who apparently does not care, feels the need to type out a worthless comment.
So why are you here??
BAM!
haa
Wow idk what to think. I thought he was a good manager but I don’t watch them everyday. Surely the front office didn’t think they were gonna be good this year and are blaming him?
Last year and now, they’re being pretty clear: it’s not about the teams performance, JD has taken that on himself more than anyone else. There have been clubhouse and player problems that they don’t think Banister is handling very well.
when has Daniels taken the blame for the on-field product? I would love to be enlightened, because everything that I have read, Daniels has placed blame on everyone but himself. players who had not developed, players not living up to the expectations after being traded for/players playing better after being traded away, or poor usage by the coaching staff. Daniels and ownership are blind to this and getting high off a lucky sellers trade 10 years ago. personnel decisions since 2011 have been a complete disaster and have put this club in the position it is in now.
I actually completely agree. I’m not impressed with JDs roster building post World Series.
Well, I can say he’s said it repeatedly last year and this year and you’ve missed it, but if you care to look he said TODAY at the press conference that the record this year is on HIM, not Banister, and is NOT why Banister is being fired.
And again, he’s said it A LOT. He said it last year. He said it before this season started. He’s said it during the year.
his actual comment was “it doesn’t all on banister, and some of it falls on me…” Daniels is clueless, as are all the DFW beat writers that kneel at his altar of disillusionment. apparently you do too.
There was an article in the FW paper a couple of days ago where Daniels said he blames himself for the roster and not Banister. This has to do with the lack of communication he has with the players about important matters and also the impending rebuild coming. Daniels just got renewed so he’s comfortable with a break down/ build up and wants a competent communicator for the kids.
Yup you guys should go check out what Daniels has actually said, he does place the major portion of blame on himself. That being said, he’s still the big boss, and has the right to choose his manager. Looking forward to a quick rebuild, lots of talent in the system currently.
It follows that JD would just go ahead and fire himself!
They are blaming him!
“it’s Banister’s inconsistent, and at times inadequate, communication skills that may lead to his departure, and not the team’s recent performance on the field.” This was from yesterday’s post.
Read the article.
I watched them play the Rays this week, and while we all know that veteran teams have a tough time getting motivated the last two weeks in a lost season (especially in the Texas heat), they were just awful. On several plays, ten cents worth of effort would have changed the play.
It was time for Bannister to go.
That sounds like an issue with the players, not the manager.
A managers job is to get the most from his players.
Maybe the Rangers can hire Kevin Cash?
Big Sexy will be the “opener” for 50 games…..
Maybe the Rangers will get a little boost and win 40 games over their last 9.
Rediculous so close to the end of the season unless it was off the field stuff that couldn’t wait.
Why are comments regarding Banister’s dismissal allowed?
Do we really want people to question and possibly scrutinize the man’s past actions while he’s going through a difficult time?
Just checking here to make sure the words ‘addison’ and ‘russell’ are still allowed on MLBTR
You’re welcome to discuss Addison Russell in other places. I’m not sure what you’re trying to suggest, but we simply disabled the comments because it was clear it was not going to be a manageable conversation for us to host within our rules and standards for the site.
If there really was standards here, I could probably think of a few guys that should be 86’d.
Jeff, Omg Standards?
What standards? That’s all I will say, because I do enjoy posting with most of the guys on here who are polite and have great senses of humor, so, MYR, KUDOS FOR YOUR AWESOME POST!!
We do our best.
thanks Jeff!!
Keep writing!! I do enjoy it.
Yeah this place rocks! I’ve been using this site since 2010 I think. Just never created an account name. I figured they get mad at work knowing I spent time commenting. Didn’t have high speed net access until last November. Love the stats etc though I don’t understand them all. Over almost 150 years of organized baseball the stats are icing on the cake.
Wow, I wish I had a job like yours, LOL. even though I am not working
I was just trying to use a touch of humor in response to the post above. Anytime this kind of stuff happens, it’s a sad situation for a lot of people involved. And the a bunch of know-it-alls , including me sometimes, start firing off crazy remarks without knowing the details. I’m good with not allowing comments on some stories.
All good, thank you for your response.
I understand Jeff but why not end the article with a no comments note?
I am guessing Steve was just trying to focus on presenting it in an appropriate manner, but that seems sensible. I’ll add it.
My post wasn’t meant to harm or single you out in any form.
[remainder of post removed by Jeff]
Thank you. I wasn’t trying to take offense, just giving our explanation. I hope you can allow me the humorous edit of your comment so we don’t turn this post into the Russell debate. (I didn’t want to just remove it b/c I wanted to respond otherwise.)
Excuse me?
I never even mentioned the name you’re suggesting. So, why act salty and childish to my respectful explanation?
Evidently, my post didn’t ignite any debate. MLBTR readers seem to possess enough intelligence and maturity to understand the explanatory nature of my comment.
But go ahead and edit this contribution, too.
I wasn’t being salty, I was trying to be friendly and keep it light in the course of editing your comment. As I said, I did want to respond to it but also felt it needed to be edited.
Your comment went into the subject that we have decided we’re not hosting debate on, at the present. I guarantee you it’d have led to extended debate.
EDITED TO ADD: Sorry for implying otherwise. You did not expressly discuss Russell. But I felt it was launching that debate.
Jeff, I think you are a nice guy gently explaining why this and why that.
It’s not easy being a writer
and ref! You are very sweet!
Suck up!
There is always one
insecure, bored, angry,
phycotic, uneducated,
immature guy on each page
that doesn’t know how to post, lol. Why subscribe?
Hey KIDD, if you don’t
think Jeff is a nice person
then tell him!!
I like him. That has nothing to do with you being a suck up. You added nothing to the conversation by announcing that you have a Jeff Todd fetish. Thanks for the insults.
Hey kidd, what did you
add to this conversation , you added your macho man
bulliness!!
I will compliment any person who deserves it!!
You deserved all those insults and more!!
You on the other hand, just a miserable person!
Jeff,
this guy is just a big bully, as you can see from 3 of his posts to me.
He is not here to post, just to make trouble.
NITE
Extra sensitive woman. Sorry I offended you. Hope it didn’t distract from your vacuuming. Have a great day
Looks like there is an alternate spelling for misogynist, k-i-d-d-h-o-f-f
Speak to all your women like that??
Lol, Cat The Man Do, Bless You, great and descriptive word. we both called it!!
I only have one woman. She knows her role. Takes my shoes off when I get home. Has super ready. Never bores me with discussing her daily activities. Massages my shouldersLol. I’m just kidding. She punch me if I said that to her. But she’s the love of my life.
Supper
kidd, just be nice to her
always.
Yeah because this was all Banister’s fault.
I seriously doubt that even Casey Stengel could have sniffed .500 with that mess of a rotation, but we’re talking about a communication problem here apparently, so I expect the TEX FO will line up interviews with some of the talking heads on ESPN and the MLB Network to solve that problem.
It’s been reported that wins/losses had nothing to do with this. Everyone knows you can only do so much with a rebuilding team in it’s beginning stages. The guy had terrible communication skills, which led to him getting the boot.
Bryan Price
Still waiting for this headline: “Front Office Excepts Blame for Team’s Poor Performance, Fires Themselves.”
Lol accept. Intentionally funny. Reminds my more former boss.
Hey Steve, why are comments disabled on the Addison Russell story?
He’s a Cub fan
Chris12345……Many of the comments were more petty than pretty and it had all of the makings of the internet equivalent of a school yard brawl.
Cat – I kind of figured that thread would be a dumpster fire.. It would have been nice if they threw a few lines at top or bottom of article explaining as much ( not that they need to explain any decisions to us – just would have been nice)
L O L
Because Steve and I can’t spend the entire day policing the comments and it was swiftly going off the rails.
Then remove the article if you two can’t handle differing opinions [edited by administrator].
I think it’s possible to have stories without providing the forum for internet discussion as well. And I didn’t say we can’t handle differing opinions. I said it would put too much of a burden on our resources to try to monitor the discussion to ensure it stays within he bounds of our policies.
No, I edited your post to comply with our commenting policy. Your profile is not under moderation, your comments are getting caught in filters because of violations of the commenting policy.
I appreciate that this site focuses on serious baseball. It’s honestly why I like the sport in general.
The NFL has ruined itself with its unending coverage of arrests, suspensions, and protests.
I don’t want this site become something inferior.
Because Steve and Jeff are Cub fans
I am but one man with an opinion, but those guys are the epitome of all things objective.
The closest you’ll get to finding out what teams’ they root for is the “About me” page only; It’s impossible to tell from their writing.
Hint: you’re 0/2
If they were truly objective they’d allow commenting on the Russell article. Oh, and I’ve been reading mlbtr for years. They both have subtle biases towards certain teams whether they realize it or not.
The decision regarding the Russell post has absolutely nothing to do with supposed biases for or against particular teams.
I disagree with you on the Russell matter. (Feel you a little trigger-happy lol) Delete the comment, or leave it. Don’t half-a.ss. He took it the wrong way, because while I agree, with most if not all of his post, I feel it’s worse to edit out content, than completelly remove it, and acknowledge (mybe apologize) for removing comments u deem “slippery slope”
Yes, the two are unrelated, But I absolutely disagree with “They both subtle biases towards certain teams whether they realize it or not.” I would ask… challenge him name “one” bias. Prob mad team doesnt get (enuf) “coverage”
That’s why we aren’t hosting a debate on this topic — because we can’t reasonably sift through the comments.
I haven’t edited anything here to selectively allow portions of what was said. I only removed things that violated our policy — e.g., bad words — or that went into the discussion of the Russell situation.
True, we are discussing the removal decision here, which has nothing to do with Jeff Banister. But … I’m trying to be accessible to explain it. Still, I’m not going to allow this comments section to turn into the place the Russell situation is discussed, whether or not that’s the intent that people have had in posting things I elected to remove.
Only controversial “bias” subject, ever seen people complain about you covering in posts is Cleveland Indians’ Wahoo situation.
Just avoid that one… by reporting it; to them, you justify the logo change. (Which is already happening) hopefully “Wahoo” doesnt get edited out? But even if it did, you got the jist. You’re the most objective baseball site on the internet, and it’s not even close. luxury to read ur work
Thank you.
But, please, nobody turn this into an Indians logo debate!
Gosh it’s impossible to imagine how he didn’t win his third division with that roster!
Only a weak leader doesn’t take any accountability.
My guess is the front office was changing his personnel discussions after he informed the players leading to the mixups.
Oh and FIRE JON DANIELS
Jon Daniels and the owners who are fault here. Not Bannister. He done great with what Daniels and Co. Gave him. They set him up to fail.
absolutely correct, look who they has playing??
Now look Elaine…whatever you do, DONT crap on my man Bartolo! I love that guy.
MYREDSOX, IT’S Eileen, lol, not Elaine, and I have loved Bartolo for decades!! No Worries⚾️⚾️⚾️
Wow sorry. I was watching Seinfeld recently. Yeah Bart’s cool! It’s still fun watching him hit his first home run.
All Bannister is was a scapegoat. They had to fire someone but the axed the wrong person.
Learn how to spell Banister, then comment
thank God. hopefully this is the turn around for the Rangers. I never liked Banister. He seemed too mean spirited as a manager. he gave off that “little league coach” vibe.
What have u done for me lately?
Jeff Banister is an anagram for “Jab Stiffener” and “Afferent Jibs”.
I’m not sure what that has to do with anything, but chances are, it was discussed before he was fired. He just has no great anagrams for his name.
new.wordsmith.org/anagram/anagram.cgi?anagram=JEFF…
Another baseball anagram is:
Jeter fan fibs
Good one! Probably the best yet. Maybe they should reconsider firing him now.
I spent 15 years sweating in a paper mill. When the machines ran good I’d sit around making anagrams and jumble puzzles making fun of management
I love those games, I love making fun of management!!
The best anagram I can come up with for Addison Russell is:
U IS LOSERS LANDD
Haaaa, are you at work doing this, or I would hope you have Sat off
I find I don’t have the patience anymore to do those, so bless you for still doing them.
I was told I have the patience
of a FLEA!!
Generally when managers are fired during the season it’s because veterans went to ownership and told them its time for a change. I’m not saying that’s the case here but that’s generally what happens
John Daniels needs to go.
When are the Angles going to fire there manager. What a waste. Good players and bad manager
Your spelling of the team Pujols plays on is obtuse, speaking of angles.
Wasn’t that acute thing to say? Eh eh!
Hahahahahahaha. This is a great reply!
lolol
And this accomplishes what? Half the team that he can’t seem to communicate with won’t be there come spring training.
Please, take Clint Hurdle next.
Sandy Alomar Jr. or Omar Vazquel. Both played in Texas. Both are Latin players and fan favorites. Sandy has been a long time assistant coach in the majors while Omar has just came off an amazing as the manager for the Winston Salem Dash of the Chicago White Sox organization. As a complete outside opinion I believe the Rangers would do great with either one of these guys. Fans could have a lot of fun and start winning if they give them a shot and some time.
Its so much easier to point out a Manager’s flaws than a Manager’s strengths I’ve seen some great moves (Sparky Anderson moves Pete Rose to from LF to 3B; George Foster plays LF full time) and we all can name some absolute stinkers. What makes a good Manager? Here’s some thoughts not necessarily ordered:
1) Know your team. I never thought Jim Leyland knew his team very well.
2) Put the best team on the field. Ralph Houk played his best players full time and rotated his catchers.
3) Platoons and Roles. I like the super subs as much as anyone but, they are rare. When you don’t have a full-time player with good offense, defense and base running skills, know when to play another role player. Bruce Bochy absolutely out-managed his opponents during the three Giants WS.
4) Manage the pitching staff. I though Roger Craig was as good as I’ve seen.
5) Manage the Bullpen. Not only game time management, but using the season to get the right pitchers in place. I think Dick Williams may have done the most to advance the “art”:.
6) The basics: Make the routine plays, Throw to the right base, No extra outs. No Fielder collisions, Watch the 1B-3B Coach,
7) Don’t over manage. The best example is the job AJ Hinch did in the 2017 WS. He allowed his pitchers to remain in while they were effective. while Dave Roberts imo over managed his pitchers.
8) Bring up new talent.. A team should have 2-3 significant rookies every season. Neither Sparky nor Leyland did very well.
