The Phillies have started Carlos Santana at third base 10 times down the stretch and received a total of 70 innings of play from him there, and Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia explores the possibility of Santana shifting to the hot corner on a full-time basis in 2019. Doing so would allow the Phils to move Rhys Hoskins from left field back to first base, dramatically improving the outfield defense. Santana, 32, tells Salisbury that he’s open to the idea, while manager Gabe Kapler adds that it’s something the Phils will evaluate after the season. Philadelphia’s expected run at Manny Machado figures to have an impact on their left-side infield alignment, and Salisbury speculates that the team could again explore the trade market for Maikel Franco this offseason.
Defensive metrics have actually given a favorable review to Santana’s minuscule sample of innings, but it still seems unlikely that he’d turn in quality results over a full season. I’d add, however, that he’d be replacing another below-average defender in Franco; if the Phillies believe the difference between Franco and Santana at third base is more or less negligible, then they could overwhelmingly bolster the rest of their defense by moving Hoskins to first base in favor of an average or better defender in left.
More out of Philly…
- Speaking of Hoskins, the 25-year-old chatted with The Athletic’s Matt Gelb about his recent decision to hire agent Scott Boras (subscription required). Part of the thinking, per Hoskins, was actually about his desire to improve his defense in the outfield. Gelb notes that Boras has 10 trainers and a pair of fitness facilities, which appealed to Hoskins as he seeks to improve his performance in the outfield. “There’s only so many different drills you can do,” said Hoskins. “Jump rope, ladder, whatever. But some guys just have a different way of communicating that or they focus on different things within the movement.” He added that he heard “nothing but good things” from the players he spoke to about using Boras’ trainers. Gelb writes that Boras has expressed an openness to discussing a contract extension for Hoskins this offseason, though historically his clients have typically not gone that route.
- It’s been an injury-ruined season for Jerad Eickhoff, but Kapler told reporters that he’s a candidate to start one of the final games of the season after rejoining the team as a reliever earlier this month (link via Matt Breen the Philadelphia Daily News). Eickhoff met with numerous specialists to evaluate nerve damage that was leading to numbness in his hands this summer and, at one point when doctors were having a difficult time making a diagnosis, wondered whether his career could be in jeopardy. “I don’t know if there’s a guy that the clubhouse pulls more for than Jerad Eickhoff,” said Kapler. “I think he’s pretty deeply cared for and he worked his butt off to get back to this position.”

“…Boras has 10 trainers and a pair of fitness facilities, which appealed to Hoskins as he seeks to improve his performance in the outfield.”
Another reason (aside from money) why many players who want to continually improve their performance/earnings choose Boras.

Not the worst free agent signing last offseason (I think), but most pointless? Followed closely by any of the trio of Rockie’s relievers lol
jdgoat
Alex Cobb maybe? At least the Rockies kind of made sense even though relievers always suck when they sign there.
jbigz12
Santana’s was the worst. Hoskins had already turned in poor defensive work in left field the season before. You’re taking a guy completely out of position to pay Santana 60 MM to play first. Cobb was a bad signing. Mostly due to timing. Had we inked him on day 10 of FA it wouldn’t looked nearly as bad. No ST killed him. Honestly believe he could’ve been flipped at the deadline had he been brought in 2 months earlier. Wouldn’t have been a big haul but the salary could’ve been unloaded.
jdgoat
Ya I think Santana is the worst. It’s even worse now since they moved and also added Bautista and Bour on top of Hoskins and Santana.
jbigz12
Do they non tender Bour? Idk if they want to pay him 4-5 mil to ride the bench.
Codeeg
Pretty sure it was the reliever the cardinals signed that ended up costing them a draft pick and $14M and he didn’t make it to July.
jbigz12
Not a bad choice. 1 year of a reliever for a pick was a questionable move a reliever of that caliber usually costs more than that in prospects in July so I get the logic to some extent. It didn’t work out with holland but it made some sort of sense. Not to mention a 14Mm Mistake isn’t nearly as bad as one that costs 4x that.
RedRooster
What about the Padres overpaying for Hosmer when they already had Wil Myers and Josh Naylor in the fold?
lowtalker1
Josh Naylor was never in the fold. He is trade bait
bbatardo
Yeah Hosmer deal is bad so far.. guess Padres have 7 more years to see if it works out lol
bleacherbum
4 because let’s be honest. The Padres aren’t going to pick up the last 3 years after the option. Hosmer’s deal is 5 years 100 basically.
Mattimeo09
That’s still an awful deal
JJB
Leadership is expensive! To even see Hosmer’s World Series ring, the Padres had to pay a $250,000 bonus.
Then they got into that reverse Roger Dorn Major League II negotiating tactic where Boras kept increasing the price, so that didn’t go well for them.
davidcoonce74
Hosmer deal was terrible at the time and somehow even worse now. They were trying to fix a problem they didn’t actually have – Myers was fine at first and, most importantly, managed to stay healthy while playing there, something he’s never been able to do at other positions. I know some people want to talk about Hosmer’s clubhouse presence, which is fine but we don’t really know anything about that, and his defense. Well, guess who the tenth-worst player in baseball, by DRS? Yep, Eric Hosmer is the 10th-worst defensive player in baseball. Not just first basemen – all players.
btw, The list, from worst to Hosmer, goes – Hoskins, KDavis, Mancini, Castellanos, Harper, JD Martinez, Andujar, Teoscar Hernandez, Jose Abreu, then Hosmer. But hey, only 6 more years of this.

Signing Santana was just idiotic from the beginning. Obviously signing him was moving their best player, Hoskins out of position which I think was a big part of his early season struggles. It’s was just such a dumb signing all around. Why not just sign a much cheaper Outfielder and keep Hoskins where he belongs at first. Plus it’s not like Santana has been killing it with the bat either. Signing him is the big reason the Phillies defense is the worst in the league.
thegreatcerealfamine
And people make fun of Schwarber in LF…
bush1
Schwarber is actually a decent left fielder if you look at the numbers. Plus he was drafted, and not signed for no reason like Santana was when the Phillies already had Hoskins.
thegreatcerealfamine
I totally agree. Give me Schwarber any day over Santana.
Mattimeo09
In this scenario, the apt comparison is Schwarber vs Hoskins. They both left their regular position to play left field and aren’t impressive defensively.
Would you rather have Schwarber or Hoskins?
JJB
I haven’t seen Schwarber play more than a few times, so what do Cubs fans think? His defensive ratings this year look really good, so I’m curious.

davidcoonce74
Schwarber doesn’t look like he’d be a good outfielder but he’s surprisingly good out there. He’s just barrel-shaped. He’s not going to win a gold glove but he’s playable out there. I live in Bloomington and watched him play all the time for IU and I always thought he was fairly athletic for a big stocky catcher. Hoskins, OTOH, is the very worst player in baseball defensively, according to DRS and some other metrics. He really needs to be at first until the NL adopts the DH in the next CBA (fingers crossed).
.
bush1
I’d rather have Hoskins for sure. Schwarber really never had a position. He was drafted as a catcher, but didn’t have the skill set to catch in the majors, and obviously with Rizzo it had to be OF for him. He’s fine out there these days and has improved a lot. But the Phillies are just so dumb to go out of their way to create this problem by even signing Santana.
darkstar61
The odd thing too was that Santana is a solid all around, but honestly not spectacular, 1B limited guy in his post 30 stage.
If it were a true superstar 1B expected to excel for a couple years that was forcing these moves, then okay. But it wasn’t. It was merely a very solid above average guy on a likely downward trend. Makes it so puzzling
At least it wasn’t Hosmer though!
bush1
That’s true at least it wasn’t Hosmer, but it was still a truly puzzling signing from the beginning.
Fortarnold
On a team with horrendous defense, Franco actually isn’t a bad fielder. I haven’t really looked at his defensive metrics he does not hurt them out there and makes some difficult plays at time, I’d rather have him there than Santana for fielding purposes.
sufferforsnakes
I remember when Santana played 3B for the Tribe. Eeeeeek!
MooseBreathMints
I have been saying this for a while: Why would any Free Agent want to play for this manager? This team had won despite the manager. He may be a nice, friendly, and encouraging person, yet his skill at managing is horrible.
marshmallowman
i said the exact thing about Charlie Manuel
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
We aren’t gonna have a shot at being any good until Cigar Guy (Middleton) send Kapler and Klentak packing. Kapler’s one-size-fits-all hitting approach was a failure. And if giving out $60 million to fortify a position that was already fortified is an example of how Klentak is gonna spend Cigar Guy’s cheese, we’re in deep trouble.
Actually, all this losing in September may be a good thing. No way Klentak can realistically call this a successful season. There is a genuine possibility that we will finish the year in third place with a sub-.500 record.
To quote Bill Parcells, “You Are Who Your Record Says You Are!”.
DannyQ3913
Kapler is garbage
Jack Marshall
Brasier will be given the job unless he blows up in the play-offs. The Sox won’t pay for Kimbrel. and shouldn’t.
bucketbrew35
Worst F/A Signings of the 2017/2018 Free Agent Class imo:
1. Alex Cobb
2. Yu Darvish
3. Greg Holland
4. Jay Bruce
5. Zack Cozart
6. Carlos Santana
davidcoonce74
I think injured p[ayers should probably be excluded from a list like this; Darvish got hurt – he wasn’t ineffective. He has several seasons to make this signing useful, and he’s always been good when healthy.
bush1
Santana should be higher. It was just such a dumb and unnecessary signing from the get go. The other signings made sense in some ways but just haven’t worked out yet. He Santana signing will never work out because of the roster jam it has created.
bucketbrew35
In retrospect Bryan Shaw and Jake McGee should also be on that list..
stymeedone
Saying you chose Boras for the outfield instructors on his staff, is like saying you chose the Rockies, because of the school system in the area (Mike Hampton). Even better is that Hoskins is watching Santana be moved to 3B while saying it.
JJB
In Hampton’s case, everybody knew he was lying since there are “good school systems” in so many areas. You’re simply misinformed when it comes to Scott Boras, but that’s your choice to remain that way. Nobody can force you to learn new things or break down preconceived notions about somebody.

Dear Phillies, please review film of Santana playing 3B for the Indians before you put him back there.
