Here are today’s outright assignments, which come in the wake of a wide slate of 40-man roster moves at the outset of September…
- Athletics catcher Bruce Maxwell cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Nashville, the team announced via press release. Maxwell, 27, has been a lightning rod for criticism following his decision last season to take a knee during the National Anthem and his offseason arrest for aggravated assault. Though Athletics brass gave Maxwell a public vote of confidence as his court proceedings were ongoing, the Oakland organization ultimately bumped Maxwell down the depth chart by signing Jonathan Lucroy. On the field, Maxwell has struggled through a terrible season, hitting .182/.207/.309 in a small sample of 58 Major League plate appearances and just .219/.300/.281 through 200 PAs at the Triple-A level.
- The Angels announced that right-hander Osmer Morales cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Salt Lake. Morales, 25, received an extremely brief call to the Majors, appearing in just one game, facing two batters, and recording one out. He’ll head back to the minors and hope for a lengthier audition in the future. The righty had solid numbers in 50 1/3 innings in Triple-A last season but was rocked for a 6.44 ERA with 8.2 K/9, 5.0 BB/9 and 1.4 HR/9 in 102 innings with Salt Lake this season.
stansfield123
Good news is, Nike is hiring, and you only need one qualification: the ability to disrespect your country.
stevewpants
Yeah the right to freedom of speech is so unamerican, idiots.
mlb1225
It’s also unamerican to disrespect the guys who protect your freedom of speech but whatever.
jdgoat
None of them are being disrespected so whatever
mlb1225
It is though. I’ve yet to hear a veteran or active duty/service man/woman who doesn’t find it disrespectful.
jdgoat
I’m you’ve obviously never been on Twitter. I’ve seen hundreds claim that it’s fine. Or you know, the veteran who told him it wasn’t disrespectful to kneel….
You are wrong
You haven’t look very hard.
sufferforsnakes
Really? Try telling that to my Special Forces friends.
jdgoat
And what do you tell the other ones that don’t find it disrespectful? Is this going to be one of the cases where a team needs to change its logo because some people want it changed and others don’t? There’s always going to be people on both sides, and for some reason I think you’re a person who flip flops on topics like this.
retire21
You’re not listening then.
mlb1225
I’ve stood by the opinion that I think that this is disrespectful to veterans, and I’m going to tell the armed force members who find this not really disrespectful the same thing, I don’t agree with that. However, I’m going to thank them for their service anyway because that’s what they did, protect our country. Maxwell hasn’t done anything but make people mad, and threaten an unarmed food delivery person with a gun.
Cam
In 1936, many people denounced Jesse Owens raising a fist during the National Anthem. Looking back on history, most people with common sense acknowledge the cultural importance of that moment, and how he stood up to be noticed.
Now, in 2018, people are looking for a reason to be offended all over again.
Notice how it’s only people who have a problem with kneeling, that turn the conversation towards Veterans, the Flag etc? Those taking a knee have openly acknowledged it has nothing to do with veterans and such, but the denouncers continue to turn the issue towards it.
It’s ridiculous to think that people are being trialed in public court for expressing their freedom of speech, because it apparently disrespects…the people who fought for their right to freedom of speech in the first place. They’re doing what those veterans fought for them to be able to do.
Kneeling-haters have not come up with one single, reasonable argument, and never will, because there is none.
If people used half of their energy that they use for making kneeling into an issue that it really isn’t, and spent it on dealing with the issue that it’s trying to highlight, then the US of A wouldn’t be nearly as much of a racist cesspool as it is right now. But alas, here the country is, drowning under the weight of it’s own problems (and cheeseburgers).
arc89
Why are the same people angry at somebody who kneels but is Ok with a person wearing the American flag as clothing. Its disrespectful to wear underwear or bikini or a head rag or a shirt according to flag protocol but the same ones that are out raged are fine with somebody disrespecting the flag.. Kind of how Kid Rock uses it as a prop at his shows. Smart people know that its only a way to gather votes of the weak minded.
HalosHeavenJJ
Jesse Owens didn’t raise his fist. That was the 1968 Olympics.
I actually like the raised fist. Says we’re respectful but striving for better, IMO.
IronBallsMcGinty
At the same time, those who kneel could use their energy to make changes happen rather than just “keep the discussion going” as some say.
Racism is horrible but not some new thing that just came along in recent years. The media thrives on bad news and unfortunately so do many others. So they pick and choose what stories will boost ratings and online traffic while narrow minded people who cannot seem to read with an open mind eat it up.
Kneeling is doing nothing to unify people. It’s only driving the wedge deeper. Sure our country has problems. But tell me where else you can go and get a free ride to a good school, go pro and make millions of dollars in a short time for being good at sports, then wave a middle finger at cops and be called a brave hero.
I know there are bad cops but being a cop doesn’t make you a bad person. They have a job that is often difficult and dangerous and do not get paid that well for it. When someone is a victim of a crime they call the police because they want justice and protection all while receiving no bill. Yet they have to deal with those who generalize all officers as if they’re evil and now feel threatened as a result of all this bs.
How’s that?
jdgoat
And the ironic thing about that, JT Brown, a former forward for the Tampa Bay Lightning, got death threats for raising his fist during the anthem last year. Some people just hate positive change and have no morals or humanity.
User 4245925809
Must live in a very insulated and leftist bubble then and only communicate with the same.
Here’s 1 veteran that think’s it is treasonous to take a kneel during the anthem, so now no excuse to say none and i was in the USN when both Carter and Reagan were President.
Omer sadeh
That is totally different. Kid rock does it to show patriotism. He’s showing homage to the flag. When these men kneel during the anthem they’re doing it to protest police but it also comes across as treasonous. My take. If you don’t like this country and don’t like the symbol you have the freedom to leave it. Or simply stay in the locker room. We’re not the only country that has this problem. However other countries wouldn’t let citizens kneel during their own anthem. Some other countries actually throw you in jail for it.
BrandonGregory74
I wouldn’t call it a racist cesspool. We are more inclusive now than we’ve ever been. Don’t let the ignorant on both sides sway you from the truth.
jdgoat
Is protesting for a better country not showing patriotism? And if you’re going to call what Kaeps doing “treasonous”, you also have to call everybody who wears the flag on their clothes “treasonous” as well. Or are you just going to pick and choose which rules need to be followed?
Omer sadeh
Kaepernick isn’t protesting for a better country. He’s protesting police. He just hates cops. If he wants to protest police there are other ways of doing it. He was just taking advantage of a national stage. And wearing the flag on clothes is showing pride. Not contempt for your country.
arc89
A cop today shot and killed a man in his apartment by a police officer. The reason for the shooting was the police officer mistook his apartment for her apartment. Can somebody explain why we give a gun to a person that can’t tell their apartment from a neighbor’s? They shot and killed a unarmed person on a mistake. What about better training or hiring people that knows how to find their correct apartment? If i make a mistake at my job that kills somebody i go to jail so why not police officers follow the same rules?
Mendoza Line 215
I think that you have to look at the specifics of the case. That is why an investigation will be done. After the facts come out then a decision can be made as to the fairness of the results of the investigation and any punishment that may be in order.
marijuasher
It’s against God to lie, so why don’t you tell the truth? How can he insult the military when he purposefully said why he knelt.
Thou shalt be smitten. In your case, it means You Love Russia.
MLBTRcanblowme
I’m in the military and I find it very disrespectful. Oh wait, my opinion differs from yours, so based upon your logic I must be a Russian spy. The ignorance is just astounding….
arc89
the comment shows the bias on a comment board. i stated a news report on a shooting no mention of race. Just facts and three people here thumb down the facts of reporting. It shows that people do not want the truth but opinions that fit their opinions. They want to make excuses instead of looking into a fact. The war on the media by the current white house is completely wrong. The media job is to report facts not be a opinion news that only report positive news about a leader. If a player says he kneels but is not doing it to disrespect the military why are those in the military upset? They represent the freedom to make a choice not to make everyone follow what a leader tells you to do.
ryanw-2
And yet Maxwell’s father is a veteran and supported him. Kaepernick was instructed to kneel by a veteran. Oops!
Chad623
And yet the majority of veterans find it disrespectful. Oops!
sergefunction
Jesse Owens raised his fist at the ‘36 Berlin Olympics?
You are confusing that with FDR and Hitler riding horses together while shirtless.
SmittyFubar
Iraq combat veteran here. I don’t find it disrespectful. now you can never say that BS again.
Chad623
Clearly, reading comprehension isn’t one of your strong suits. I said the MAJORITY of veterans, not all.
marijuasher
This is the internet, Pal. You saying you’re American, doesn’t make you one. Got that? Oh, you don’t like your patriotism challenged while in the message board of an online blog, and you’re anonymous all the same?
So again, Bruce Maxwell’s thoughts don’t matter. Chris12345, on the other hand, is a real American Patriot, and we all better kiss his ass. Because he knows what’s in Bruce Maxwell’s mind more than anybody.
Got it, Chief!
philphan
Veteran here. I don’t feel disrespected. I served in order to defense the Constitution. Regardless if I agree with your speech, I fought for your right to express yourself.
Jockstrapper
Go to hell.
arc89
You have 0 idea which veterans support kneeling or standing. Just like I read a majority of veterans hate Trump but that is one person opinion.
SmittyFubar
this is difficult to follow on mobile. I was replying to mob2255 whatever his name is who said he’s never heard a vet say they didn’t feel disrespected. I know it’s a majority. Don’t care either. Being a veteran doesn’t make you right no matter how much group think you got going on
mlb1225
Well it wasn’t BS. I hadn’t heard of a veteran say that. However, it is the majority that find it disrespectful, so maybe that’s why I had yet to hear of it, but thank you for your service anyway.
bkwalker510
I would think it would be more reasonable to ask the police to stop murdering people in cold blood than to ask people to stop bringing attention to the fact that the police are murdering people in cold blood.
But, to each her own I suppose.
sufferforsnakes
How about we ask the criminals to stop committing crimes?
marijuasher
Republicans ruin everything. Baseball blogs. Democracy. The Constitution.
Republicans do love Putin, though. So there’s that.
Mendoza Line 215
I do think that some of the shootings over the last five years are tantamount to at least third degree murder. If those shot were stopped only because they were minorities then there is some proof as to a hate crime. The police should not be above the law in killing innocent people.
Many more were killed as a result of not following police orders and the police were following procedure.
Some were dangerous and there was no alternative.
The biggest problem is that all of these cases are treated the same by the liberals and the media and that dilutes the few that actually should be adjudicated. It also feeds the ultra conservatives who do not or cannot see that as long as one dies there is injustice.
If the NFL players can respectively protest and bring about an improved society by doing so then that is a good thing. The problem is that too many are bums who do not respect what this country has given them,so they sit down,or do not face the flag during the anthem.
The protest is actually a matter for the league and the owners as the players are protesting on company time while in uniform.I thought that this was over when the $89M was started to be given by the NFL last year
It seems to me that the two killings by police in Minneapolis and New Orleans a couple of years ago were blatantly unnecessary. They are what triggered the two murderers to take the lives of policemen in those two cities.
I feel very much for those families also.
Just my two cents.
xabial
Your point is well-made. Baseball is the least political out of all sports. (regular definition of Politics… where Trump is Trigger word) and I love that. They are the antithesis of ESPN.
Baffling Maxwell still has a job after this social justice warrior situation, off-field issues (pointing loaded gun at someone) and trying his hardest to politicize (infect) the LEAST-political sport out of all of them. Doesn’t matter what side of the political spectrum you are.
I know baseball hates change, which Manfred’s pushing, and technically there are some “politics” involved there…but complete and utter opposite definition of “politics” I mean. I watch sports to get AWAY from trump this, trump that..and think our country does too. I think Maxwell sucks too? But could be my bias.
nstale
You’re an idiot.
Angelfanforlife19
As a nation we need to face and acknowledge our past and present and he caught all of attention. Nike is capitalizing in this capitalistic economy.
Orangejedi23
He didn’t protest the anthem. He protested during the anthem.
Jeff Todd
It is updated, thanks.
Gobbysteiner
Ok so basically Thanos car
Jeff Todd
I don’t know what this is and I don’t care to learn about it, particularly. Just … please don’t repeatedly post the same thing.
Kenleyfornia74
He is a troll and been posting it on every article
simschifan
Thank you.
Larry David's Joe Pepitone Jersey
Maxwell’s crime has absolutely nothing to do with Kaepernick in any way, shape or form. Bringing up Kaepernick in conversations about Maxwell is an obvious attempt to make Kaepernick out to have some guilt by association connection. Maxwell deserves all of the scorn he has received and his punishment was way too lenient, but he’s the only one who has any culpability for it, and his political activities (and anybody else’s) are entirely irrelevant to his crime.
jdgoat
It’s honestly pathetic how people are trying to make that comparison.
Omer sadeh
His crime absolutely has everything to do with his protest. He’s kneeling to be anti-police. If he commits a crime like that it makes his protest pointless
marijuasher
It’s not a crime to protest. Good God, the Russians here are pathetic.
Omer sadeh
U need to re read. The crime I was referring to was Maxwell holding a gun to someone’s face
snotrocket
Maxwell certainly took the whole “Believe in something, evenif it costs you everything” mantra to heart. As someone who also hates luke warm delivery food, thank you, Brother Bruce.
sufferforsnakes
Bazinga!
HalosHeavenJJ
Maxwell belongs in prison, not MLB. He’s a coward of the biggest order. It wasn’t enough for him to physically intimidate a woman, he needed a gun to really prove his point.
MLB needs some sort of standards. It doesn’t need to turn into the NFL.
jdgoat
Ik, it seems it’s only a problem too if you’re not good. Maxwell, Olivera and that one Astros prospect are rightfully gone, but guys like Chapman, Osuna, and Familia get passes since they’re good. Terrible precedent to set.
HalosHeavenJJ
I’d take Familia off that list. Both MLB and the police stated he did not commit or threaten to commit violence.
But, yes, the Astros pulled a very Cowboys like move by bringing in a woman beater.
Omer sadeh
That’s because the victim was paid off to not press charges
pinstripes17
Take Chapman off the list, he was only confirmed to fire shots in his garage.
HalosHeavenJJ
So he only recklessly discharged a firearm. Good thing bullets don’t go through walls and windows.
He belongs on the list.
IronBallsMcGinty
Don’t forget about the lie he made up about the waiter in Alabama last year.
bucketbrew35
For every Kaep, who, to his credit, is at least active with regards to his causes during the off-season are 30 to 40 players kneeling in “protest.” Those other players are collecting their million dollar salaries and are nowhere to be found in the off-season.
For every person applauding Nike for “doing the right thing” and backing Kaep, there are 30 to 40 Nike employees working in Indonesian sweat shops making Nike Apparel for pennies on the dollar. Nothing like milking a hot button human rights issue while simultaneously committing human rights abuses and make billions of dollars in the process.
HalosHeavenJJ
The sweat shops are why I never bought Nike’s over priced/over rated gear.
I know it is about impossible to buy respectfully built clothes but when you know a company is so slimy, avoid it. At least make an effort to be a responsible consumer.
I won’t shop at Wal Mart, either.
sufferforsnakes
I quit buying anything Nike forever ago. Disrespectful founder, disrespectful company.
They just continually prove me right.
mfm420
and nothing of value is lost by you doing it
simschifan
Oh god here we go again
rev halofan
Why were there no MLB players in the Nike Kaepernick advertisement?
IronBallsMcGinty
Bruce Maxwell is a bum and should feel fortunate to be able to play professional baseball. I understand that pro athletes are humans and can make mistakes like anyone, but he clearly needs a reminder of how to carry himself. I certainly hope he never ends up on my favorite team.
Mendoza Line 215
Maybe Bruce Maxwell was released because he is 27 years old and has never been very good and just had a horrible season.
It might not be any more complicated than that.
xabial
He wasn’t released. Quite the opposite, actually. He was outrighted to Triple-A, which basically means another chance lol
Mendoza Line 215
Sorry for the technicality.
Usually when players get outrighted off the major league roster they are not very good and have little chance of returning.
“Quite the opposite”would have meant that he was being kept on the major league roster and would not have been noted in this column.
I stand by my statement even if technically incorrect.
lol
agentp
Exactly. He’s not good enough for the show, which says a lot because catchers are beat up this time of year and there’s 40 spots to choose from in September and he’s not one of the them. He’s good enough as depth in AAA/AA though, I’m greatful he’s no longer on a 40 man roster. The A’s are an up and coming team, and they have better options in productivity and personality to choose from. I hope to never see Maxwell in the bigs again.
agentp
He has a job with Nike now, he’s so oppressed.
mfm420
shocker, the comment section here becomes a cesspool of people whining about a piece of cloth, a protest, and soldiers.
if you don’t wanna wear nike, don’t wear it.
hell, 90 percent of the people destroying their socks didn’t know or care what the logo on them were til kapernick was signed (ffs, you dummies could seen the bag of them saying “each pair pays for a 12 year girl to have a late term abortion” and you just would have gone “oh. 8 pairs for 10 bucks, i need new socks”)
and you’ll be back, you guys are the same type that whine about disney and other companies supporting lgbtq groups, but yet, you go every year, you watch their networks, you eat at their restaurants, etc…
right wing fox news whiners protests, never, and i repeat never, work (but hey, labor day just passed, time to start preparing for your 12th tour of duty on the war on christmas)
xabial
Bet it was comments like these that disabled and erased River Ave Blues’ comments section yesterday…
xabial
You must be on the wrong boards. This sounds like something you’d read in the Yahoo comment section.
agentp
I’ll just say I’m glad Maxwell is no longer on a 40 man roster. The guy is not very good at life and/or baseball. He needs a life coach and some prescription drugs to become a functional member of society.
marijuasher
Ah, man, that’s cute. You’re reading your own doctor’s analysis about yourself. Way to open up, agentp!
And to think you’ve improved so much over the years that you’re now dishing out moralistic outrage via anonymous message board handles all in the name of character assassination. It’s better than constantly being caught with your pants down! Or are you still in your Mommy’s basement dishing this?
Analysis can go deep.
xabial
“Character assassination”?
The dude pointed a loaded weapon at an unarmed delivery women. MLB showed THEIR character by giving him that joke of a sentence. Nobody’s asking for Judge, Jury and executioner; Roger Goddell, but something more than probation.
Furthermore, he does suck at baseball.
PS: Is “character assassination” the same as “microaggression”?
Jockstrapper
The comments section (or the comments) is subhuman. Just cowards who’d never say the stuff they’re saying here to anyone’s face. So I guess it’s comical. Hahahahaha!
