Earlier this afternoon it was reported that the Rangers are considering moving on from skipper Jeff Banister following the season. In the wake of that report, here’s some more chatter regarding managers whose futures have had some uncertainty surrounding them…
- Fancred’s Jon Heyman reports in this week’s notes column that Orioles manager Buck Showalter is “very likely” to be replaced following this season, though the venerable veteran has yet to be definitively informed one way or another by team decision-makers. The decision on general manager Dan Duquette is more up in the air, per the report, and could yet go either way. Showalter has been managing the O’s since 2010 and guided the team to a 666-677 record that is largely skewed by the unmitigated disaster that has been the 2018 season. He’s among the game’s most respected managers, though there have been reports questioning his job security throughout the season.
- In light of recent reports that interim Reds manager Jim Riggleman is a favorite of owner Bob Castellini, Heyman adds that Riggleman additionally has numerous fans in the Cincinnati front office. The 65-year-old Riggleman has a decent chance at being tabbed the team’s long-term skipper, though former Red Sox manager John Farrell will be among those considered to step into that role as well. The Reds hired Farrell to work for them in a scouting capacity last offseason.
- Asked by Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald whether manager Don Mattingly will return for the 2019 season (Twitter link), Marlins CEO Derek Jeter suggested that to be the case, rhetorically replying, “He’s under contract, right?” Mattingly is indeed under contract, but only through the 2019 campaign. Beyond that, it’s not clear whether new Miami ownership has plans to bring in a manager of their own preference — Mattingly was inherited from the previous regime — or whether there’s interest in extending him beyond the ’19 season. Mattingly’s Marlins clubs haven’t had much success, and that’s truer than ever in 2018, though he wasn’t given much to work with heading into the current campaign following last offseason’s organizational tear-down.
Falsehope
Showalter’s 666 wins. He’s cursed.
greatdaysport
Cursed with “Dopey” Duquette.

Sure this year (plus a lot of last) has been brutal, but I’m hoping both guys stay. They’ve both done some good work and should get another shot at a rebuild.
Rwm102600
I agree. Both could be great if left to do things the way they want. If they have a chance to run the team how they see fit, I think we would see a big improvement.
bradthebluefish
Ditto.
bravesfan88
Definitely need to tear down aND revamp their whole pitching coaches..From atleast AA all the way up to the big leagues and their pitching instructors and organization pitching coaches need to go..
I’d say just do away with every single pitching coach they have, but I’m not informed enough of any hires they may have made in the past season or two of talented pitching coaches at the lower levels…
McDowell has to be the first to go, ASAP!! He doesn’t relate well to younger pitchers, and since his second to last season in Atlanta he hasn’t done anything positive with any pitcher he’s coached…
The Orioles cannot keep having their pitchers struggle, then leave and immediately start doing better in other places…Especially, when those coaches are able to easily make some adjustments that help them succeed..Adjustments that McDowell and his staff should have made, but for whatever reason they couldn’t identify or simply refused to make..
stillerfan
After 20 years in league he is 38 wins above .500 for a .505 career record. He has been mediocre all along
wadewar
Showalter better be resigned by the Orioles there no one better out there
eileenyankees9
wade, ya got that right!!
Dkaner
Why make him suffer another season. He deserves better.
dimitrios in la
He loves Baltimore and wants very badly to stay.
dimitrios in la
Plus—everyone’s cynicism aside—what he’s done for Baltimore baseball cannot be overstated.
Cardinals17
If Dan Duquette is released, I would hope that the Cardinal Ownership would look into hiring him. No one can be as bad as the Cardinals John Mozeliak!!
fannclub6
What a dumb comment… the fact Mo has had a winning record for the past 11 years and two pennants despite an unbelievable amount of personnel changes should be enough. But look what he did this year? Plus they will continue to be competitive without rebuilding. Sometimes people need to simply appreciate what we have.
ksoze
I’d be happy with Riggleman, or Farrell. I just don’t want to get an inexperienced manager with this young team. The most important piece to the 2019 Reds is clearly adding 1 or 2 Quality Starters to the Rotation. Open up that wallet Castellini.
redsfan54
Was a fan of riggleman at first, but he’s started to make decisions that seem very questionable. Would definitely like to see a thorough search for a experienced manager
MetsYankeesRedSox
Farrell? Seriously?
Perksy
The Reds are middle America and middle of the road. So they get mediocre players and managers.
Daver520
he will open the wallet but just enough for a couple moths to fly out
ksoze
That’s what I am afraid of. If he doesn’t it will be a mediocre season at best. The offense is strong, and the back of the bullpen is great, but they need to add a #2 quality starter to this team. If he doesn’t then we’ll be talking about the same things at the end of 2019.
ken48tribe
The Reds need far more starting pitching than a #2 starter. Their entire rotation has been ineffective. Some of that may be due to inexperience but quality veteran starters will not be cheap in the offseason either through FA (limited quality) or by trade. Better to acquire some innings eaters that can help stabilize the rotation while their younger starters gain experience.
bobtillman
O’s fans should wrap their heads around the reality that WITHOUT Buck, they probably would have lost 10 more games than they have……
That said, sometimes you need a complete change, and, despite the fact that they’re both capable (Buck more so), both DD and Buck should move (or be moved) on……
dimitrios in la
I disagree (ie I think both deserve to be back actually) but your sane view has some merit…. the team may well need a “complete change.”
dimitrios in la
The question is who is a legit replacement. (Loved Joe with the Yankees—underrated—but neither he nor the O’s want the other badly enough. Buck has entirely embraced Baltimore—what it represents, who the people are, what they care about; I don’t think Joe is ready to do that.
MetsYankeesRedSox
PLEASE!!!….Keep Dusty Baker unemployed
norcalblue
If history repeats itself, Mattingly will start to whine if he is not offered an extension before WS ends.
simschifan
Was Jeter always such an a hole or is he just using his power to become one?
eileenyankees9
He thinks who the heck he is, now more than ever!
thegreatcerealfamine
WTF. Explain this post…
Rocket32
Maybe he just kept that side of him hidden all those years as a player.
rocky7
Are you using yourself as the ruler for being an “A Hole” in your question?
MetsYankeesRedSox
You may hate Jeter but the Marlins ownership WAY better than the Flushing circus.
eileenyankees9
lol
jdgoat
They don’t exactly set the bar too high
eileenyankees9
haa
skip 2
Haha I don’t know if I’d say WAY better that’s for sure!
eileenyankees9
Maybe Jeter wants Girardi? Do you guys think Giradi should be in the Am. League
East, lol, to play against the Yankees??
MetsYankeesRedSox
I always liked Girardi.
eileenyankees9
Me too MYR..
He got a dirty deal and I hope he gets a good team to manage
Perksy
Nope. Jeter hated Girardi. They did not get along.
eileenyankees9
wow, I didn’t even know that, duh!!
MetsYankeesRedSox
Don’t know about that but imagine if Jeter replaced Mattingly with Girardi…… Girardi was picked over Mattingly to manage the Yankees so prob Jeter was pissed an outsider got the job.
But Jeters in management now and knows Girardi is better than Mattingly. Nothing against Don but he should be batting coach for Yankees.
eileenyankees9
Donny Baseball cannot manage, he should be a batting coach
BlueSkyLA
Because the Marlins have what it takes to attract a better manager than Mattingly? Well I suppose one feature is knowing you can always plan your family vacations for October.
MetsYankeesRedSox
Agreed. A true Yankee and a fine hitter in his day. Clean ball player. Just like Farrell should stick to pitching coach, Donnie should be batting coach. Whatever the problem they should all bury the hatchet. All three of them play the Yankee way and have the winning attitude also. Marlins organization on the rise. Florida MLB baseball is on the rise.
MetsYankeesRedSox
We’re you alive in 97 and 03 Bluesky?
rocky7
Eileenyankees9 Can’t even offer a reply to your ridiculous comment!
thegreatcerealfamine
Both are Trolls rock!
rocky7
Eileenyankees9 You’re very gullible for a Yankees fan.
What evidence does this dote Perksy have or has offered to us that Jeter ever hated Girardi?
rocky7
And you have this on what evidence….were you on the team, did you write the payroll checks, did you own the team or are you just being the Dote that you are when you make this type of statement.
thegreatcerealfamine
Rock don’t feed those trolls…
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
Showalter is wretched!! Enough is enough!!!
Bring in Girardi or heck I would even consider Willie Randolph who Showalter kicked in the can and relieved him of his duty.. It would be poetic justice
One must remember Showalter personally handpicked his coaching staff!
Just something to think about.
eileenyankees9
Lefty, that would be good for the O’s and Joe!
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
It would be nothing short of epic if the O’s got Joe Girardi!
eileenyankees9
Yup, same thoughts here!
MetsYankeesRedSox
Whoever gets Girardi will be a very fortunate team! He’s been burnt a few times, esp by the Jeffrey Loria clown show.
eileenyankees9
I don’t think Joe would go to a iffy team after he was with the Yanks.
I know he wants to manage so bad, I heard him say so
on the air, he will get thete!!
eileenyankees9
oops, typo
2012orioles
I’d love girardi
sportsjunkie24
Maybe dusty would be interested in the os job if it available otherwise giradi would be a nice get
Perksy
I could see Buck to the Nats.
eileenyankees9
That sounds good too!
jmi1950
Mattingly will be there for all of 2019 and that’s it. The reason $$$$. The Marlins are too cheap to pay for him to not manage; and too cheap to extend him.
MetsYankeesRedSox
The time to cut Mattingly is now. After this season ends. I see the Marlins rising from the ashes a third time. The young squad Jeter & company are developing will need a manager like Girardi.
racosun
Is Ausmus too good for all these gigs?
RedRooster
If I’m Showalter I don’t want to come back to the Orioles. If he’s really such a respected manager there should be other teams who are interested.
dimitrios in la
Well Buck is Buck—and he very much wants to come back.
jints1
I have mixed feelings about Showalter. He’s a good guy and has done a lot for both the Orioles and the city. However, his complacency about this year’s team can’t be ignored. He didn’t seem to care or be bothered by all the losses. Caleb Joseph’s comment these past weeks indicate change is necessary.
MetsYankeesRedSox
The guy is sick of dealing with Angelos. He’s a bad owner which is bad for MLB and bad for the whole Oriole organization. For proof look at the standings.
thegreatcerealfamine
Did Buck tell this over a beer?
thegreatcerealfamine
*tell you this
MetsYankeesRedSox
Hey cereal…I notice you doing plenty of trolling yourself.grow up kid
thegreatcerealfamine
Then stop making ridiculous unsubstantiated claims, and for the love of God choose a side!
dimitrios in la
Not sure what Joseph comments you’re referring to. Buck cares profoundly—about the O’s, about his players. It’s one of he many things that makes him special. What you’re seeing as his not caring is his not losing his cool and keeping the ship steady amidst a massive amount of team suffering. The fact that this team has not fallen apart emotionally and interpersonally is a terrific accomplishment—not akin to a trophy—but remarkable (ask the Mariners) and reflective of Buck’s leadership.
MetsYankeesRedSox
100% agree. Bucks been a damn good manager for Yanks, D’Backs and O’s.
Owners like the Wilpons and Angelos are bad for baseball and need to be encouraged to sell out. If the new commissioner is hell bent on changing baseball, he should start there.
2012orioles
Joseph basically said that no one seems upset about this historically bad season, they should be worried about their jobs, and “we suck”
dimitrios in la
jints, Ok well I read those quotes last night—and interpret them much differently.
ln13
Of course you do.
2012orioles
I’m the same way. I’m not sure how much blame he should get since there aren’t the best players on the team now, but at the same time, do we want to win? Buck has made some questionable decisions.
dimitrios in la
2012, every manager has.
Pedro Cerrano's Voodoo
“The unmitigated disaster” that is the O’s 2018 season. Lmao.
dimitrios in la
Sorry I’m not seeing the humor—you?
daboyz1965
Farrell would be good for 3 years or so.
jjghost
Mike Matheny is the answer, now we just have to determine the question.
Charlie Waffles
Oh my gosh!!! Riggleman as permanent manager of the Cincinnati Reds? Holy smokes. The Reds can hardly draw 10,000 fans a game. If Reds owner Bob Castellini wants to run off more long time Reds fans, then he’ll name Riggleman as the manager. Riggleman does nothing, absolutely nothing, to move the needle on re-energizing the Reds morbid fan base. A Riggleman hire will be DOA with the fans. If the Reds want to break the cycle of 4 straight 90+ loss seasons and 4 straight NLC last place finishes, then they have to get bold. No on Riggleman. No on John Farrell. No on Barry Larkin. Now Larkin as a bench coach maybe, but not manager.
Just NO on these old school fossils like, Riggleman, Farrell, Showalter, Gibbons (Jays), etc.
The Reds need a big splash with their managerial hire and then another for one free agent starting pitcher not named Harvey.
Jeez, the Reds are stuck in deep, deep mediocrity with their friends and family front office that is void of actual baseball people. And those named above would just continue the trend down Mediocrity Blvd. .
lesterdnightfly
“He’s under contract, right?”
That Jeter fellow sure has a winning way with the press, and with PR in general. Must have fired his NY handlers in a cost-cutting move.
driftcat28 2
Maybe Cashman can trade Boone for Mattingly
bababooeytoyall
That’s kind of a pick your poison type of move. Both of them are lousy.
