The Royals and manager Ned Yost have agreed to a one-year extension, Jon Morosi of MLB Network tweets. The deal is for next season, which will be Yost’s 10th as the Royals’ skipper.
At 58-103, the Royals have already clinched the majors’ second-worst record, but it’s hard to blame that on Yost. The rebuilding club is low on talent, after all, and figures to be in for another lean year next season, when it’s slated to reduce its payroll. That’s apparently OK with Yost, who has the full confidence of general manager Dayton Moore.
“We definitely want him back,” Moore said in April, adding that Yost has earned the right to manage the club for as long as he wants.
While the Royals have gone an underwhelming 687-735 under Yost, who took the reins in 2010, they’ve been resoundingly successful at times during his tenure. The Yost-led team won back-to-back American League pennants from 2014-15 and broke a 30-year championship drought in the latter of those seasons. Kansas City has also posted records of .500 or better in two other seasons during Yost’s reign.
Prior to joining the Royals, Yost managed Milwaukee from 2003-08, a span in which the Brewers logged a 457-502 record.

Isn’t now the time to start “trying things” as far as coaching goes? The Royals won’t be good for at least 4 years

Ned is the winningest manager in royals history, and won a champion. He pretty much gets to decide when he’s done. Plus, why bring someone else in who has no chance of winning? In a way, he’s biting the built a bit for the next guy
seanwh01
RIGHT! Welcome back Ned, glad to have you for a while longer!

WRONG!!! Saying that they won’t be good for another 4 years is a bad statement. They won’t be great next year, but I predict them to be a .500 team next year. And they will just get better in 2020 and better after that ect…..
jdgoat
How are they going to be .500? They’re clearly in the start of a long rebuild and have at least two or three more years of a lot of low .400 win percentages

The AL Central is bad enough that you can squint and see almost anyone winning it if the Indians hit some injuries or bad luck.
That said, it’s probably more important for the Royals to figure out who should manage the AA team than the big league club for the next few years.

The Royals are only a few games under .500 for the second half and have won 16 of their last 20 at home. This team got younger and instantly became better. Mondesi, Merryfield, O’Hearn, Keller and the younger guys are legit major leaguers. The main problem to fix is the bullpen. Dump Maurer and Hammel and that happens immediately.

I like what the youngsters have done but I just don’t see how they are separated from the White Sox and Twins. They both have blue chip prospects on the way with some pretty promising players on their squads. The Royals and Tigers are both sort of in the same boat where they don’t have a very strong farm on the way (yet) and a fairly mediocre major league team.

Wasn’t Yost fired by the Brewers in 2008 a few weeks before they made the playoffs? I always thought that was unique…..

As a Brewer fan I respect Yost. He endured years of bad management getting rid of key players for cash considerations and nobody’s. His team hit a rough point at the end of the year and management thought he was the problem. What has put the Brewers where they are now was Mark A finally firing Captain Kangaroo (Doug Melvin) and getting a GM with a brain and new ideas in place. Yost was good for the Brewers and will be known as the one who brought a World Series home for KC. Good move KC

At least they gave him 1 more year. He helped the Royals win in 15 and has managed the team as best he can with what little money they have on payroll compared to bigger clubs. I think one more year will help the prospects, who debuted this year, to get better and at least have some consistency with Yost staying another year.

Ned’s kind of like Bucky Showalter….it’s not a question of “why there’s so many losses”, as much as “how many they would have lost WITHOUT them?”……O’s and Royals are really terrible, both at least 3 years away from getting into the hunt…..
But KC has the easier task, since the O’s are really empty everywhere….and they have to play in the AL East…..and even if there’s expansion/reconfiguration, they’ll still have to deal with the Big Boys……

Yeah, Buck is such a genius. He turned Renato Nunez and Joey Rickard into 40 wins. Give me a break, that logic only applies to if he has good players. The world’s greatest soccer dribbler can’t dribble a deflated ball
getright11
He can still dribble better than you or me, or most. that’s his point.

Basically they are saying he won us a Championship and we aren’t winning anyway and he does a good job with young guys. Plus they probably believe whoever they want next isn’t available or ready yet.

Ned Yost is to the Royals what Bob Melvin is to the A’s. It takes time to be successful with small market teams – or frugal ownership or whatever – but those managers can stay put for as long as they want, very patient and competitive…
