Earlier today, Fancred’s Jon Heyman reported that despite previous reports to the contrary, the Blue Jays did indeed make an extension offer to Josh Donaldson back in Spring Training — one that would have been worth more than Jake Arrieta’s three-year, $75MM free-agent deal with the Phillies. Per that report:
“[W]ord is the Jays extended an offer for more than the three-year, $75 million deal the Phillies gave to free agent pitcher Jake Arrieta, another major star older than 30. … However, word is that after Donaldson initially seemed willing to continue talks, bringing brief hope for a deal, ultimately his camp suggested a figure range that put the sides far apart enough that talks discontinued.”
Donaldson’s agent, Dan Lozano of the MVP Sports Group, took the extraordinarily rare measure of issuing an on-record statement disputing the report and questioning the motives behind it:
“Just as in February, when Jon Heyman mis-reported information ’according to friends’ of Josh Donaldson, he once again is incorrect regarding contract negotiations between Josh and the Blue Jays. The fact is that the team never extended an offer to Josh, no years or dollars were ever specifically discussed, and it’s unfair to Josh for someone to repeatedly misrepresent his business affairs citing their ’beliefs.’ This is not the first time Jon has been reckless in his reporting about an MVP Sports Group client, and I believe it’s clear his motivations have less to do with the truth than they do with his other agenda.”
Some may speculate on the possibility of semantics being utilized to downplay the reported talks here, but this type of statement from an agency — at least made in such a public, on-record manner — is rarely, if ever seen. The previous report alluded to in today’s statement from Lozano is in reference to a February report on Donaldson’s asking price in extension talks which cited “friends” of Donaldson. Donaldson felt strongly enough about the report to dispute the matter directly on Twitter.
Today’s drama aside, it’s been a nightmare of a season for Donaldson, who was recently traded to the Indians in exchange for a player to be named later — widely reported to be righty Julian Merryweather — despite the fact that he hasn’t played a game since late May due to a calf injury. Shoulder problems also shelved Donaldson early in the season and impacted his ability to throw across the diamond even when he was on the field. The earning power that Donaldson once had, when he was viewed as a potential candidate for a nine-figure contract, has largely dried up as a result. While he’ll still undoubtedly find plenty of interest this offseason, the question of whether he’ll even receive multi-year offers is up for debate. Of course, none of that was known when contract negotiations — such as they were — took place before the start of the season.

Heyman is a hack

Heyman is a proven liar. Makes up sources all the time. He didn’t talk to any of Donaldson’s friends, he just did what he usually does: make up the story, and then make up the source.

Hopefully, refuting reports on record like this, is the start of finding some measures of accountability of what “reporters” come up with.
Guys like Heyman have been printing garbage for years, under the guise of “information from sources”, with absolutely no consequences.
Stick it to him, Lozano!

It’s telling you left yourself out of the equation you created…Next time may your inane prose contain all CAPS…It’s easier to spot an utter fool #187.

Heyman and Carfardo….2 of a kind!

Makes zero sense why Blue Jays offer him a crazy extension at his age facing a rebuild. Vlad Jr Is the future and Heyman is full of crap
pd14athletics
True, but at the same time isn’t it crazy to not trade that same player in the offseason instead of keeping him at an agreed upon final arbitration amount of 23 million? If I’m the Blue Jays, I’m investing that 23 million into other players you can potentially flip at deadline, and dealing the one really expensive player coming off a torrid final couple months to the previous season. If it’s crazy to think about looking him up at 3/75+, isn’t similarly crazy to keep him at 1/23 with same rebuild scenario ahead vs trading him for something?
NoRegretzkys
Going in to the season, Jays management has the misguided conception that the team they had would be competitive this year. That’s why they claimed last year and in the offseason that they would not trade JD, because they actually believed they could compete. They obviously dropped the ball, and I’m hoping it contributes to Shapkins being replaced.
jimmertee
Agreed CJ.
Taejonguy
plus, he was one of the hottest hitters in baseball last Sept. The front office gambled that he would play at that level again, and if they fell out of the playoff race, they would hit the jackpot in prospects- particularly if the pitching variety.
Of course he had a “calf strain” that required several months to almost heal, resulting in a deal for a broken, former semiprospect in return. Jay’s went from a potential jackpot to a last pull on the slot machine- with a quick prayer to the God of Injured Pitching Prospects for luck…
redbeard87
Heyman is terrible, I can’t imagine why he’s still employed. It’s so obvious that he has a quid pro quo arrangement with people like Scott Boras and the Blue Jays front office. They give him scoops, and he essentially acts as their PR Agent.
Ken M.
Boras’ hitman.
baseball10
Good job calling him out. How much made up stuff gets reported by these clowns to satisfy theirs or someone else’s agendas and they never have any recourse for it

We’re living in a fake news era.

Heyman is a hack for Boras. Everyone knows it. I’m glad this agent is calling him what he really is.

I’m sure it’s not completely fabricated, I’m sure Donaldson turned something down.

Donaldson even spoke during Spring Training and said there was contract extension talks but his agent and the Jays weren’t seeing eye to eye.
I’m sure numbers were thrown out there but probably nothing official according his agent.
tigerfan1968
This is what likely happened. The Jays made a inquiry or informal proposal close to their maximum to see if there was any point in trying to negotiate. Three years 75 to 80 sounds about what the Jays would be willing to ante. Donaldson and his agent were likely looking and expecting much much more and let the Jays know it. At this point the Jays knew there was no point continuing. The above may explain why Josh seems to have some ill feelings toward Jays management.
deweybelongsinthehall
A lot of Heyman bashing here. Living in NY, I’ve heard many reporters on air and have read even more. In my view he’s been more reliable than most and everyone has a so called agenda. If a reporter can’t find something interesting to report on, they’re out of a job. My guess here is the sides were both doing their do dilligence and now are trying to save face. Donaldson had been so good and with rookies still being unproven, both sides would have signed if the numbers were within an “acceptable range”. They would have worked out who plays where later.
qbass187
Did it ever occur to you that he’s “reliable” because he’s being paid to be the mouthpiece of a certain agent’s agenda? He’s a slime ball with no credibility.
Pax vobiscum
I don’t care for Heyman but surely you have hard facts to back up your claim.
deweybelongsinthehall
How do people get to be in the profession? They establish relationships. Sports reporting today is not like news reporting ftom the past. They make their bones on two things: being first and being accurate. No one can be accurate all the time but if they’re not ahead of the curve in reporting, what are they offering? If he wasn’t accurate enough, don’t you think the talk shows and networks would find others to fill the time with? He certainly is not TV eye candy nor does his voice project like others.
qbass187
He’s right. Heyman has zero credibility.
pinballwizard1969
I believe as the representative from MVP Sports Group said “… it’s clear his motivations have less to do with the truth than they do with his other agenda.” in reference to Jon Heyman. He seems to exhibit a clear bias in my opinion when it comes to certain players and teams.
kahnkobra
we’ll see, if Donaldson fires his agent then we know if Heyman was right or wrong
deweybelongsinthehall
He only fires him if he believes another can do better. $$ talks. People are talking about an agenda. The agent’s is the most obvious. Who else can be blamed because Donaldson’s age and injuries factor into his current contract situation?
Taejonguy
He left at least $50-60 million on the table by not signing a contract last off-season.
What does he get this off-season? 1 year $15 million? Maybe one of the most disastrous drops in potential free agent worth ever. At his age it will be impossible to get a big multiyear contract with his last 2 injury plagued seasons…
its_happening
Only, Dewey? I’m sure there are more ways to get fired as an agent. May be going out on a limb here…
deweybelongsinthehall
The risk of playing out a contract. Not the same thing given the ages but compare Trout to Betts. Trout elected to sign an amazing for then contract getting security but knowing barring injuries, he left big bucks on the table. Betts refuses to consider a long term deal and if he stays healthy is on pace to exceed all contracts. Donaldson bet on himself and seems to have lost.
its_happening
That’s a good point. Donaldson’s misstep happened a few years ago when he signed a short deal plus his arbitration year (2018).

I’m not even sure why this is an issue. It makes sense that the Jays didn’t offer JD an extension. The team was not going to compete after this season and they would have had to pay a premium for declining production in his 35+ years.
For me this is JD overreacting to little things, which he’s done all year. He lashed out at the media for asking him if he would be ready opening day when he was injured in spring training. After swearing he would be ready, on opening day he’s clearly injured and can’t throw the ball to first base.
its_happening
It’s possible this happened. Possible, not probable. Yeah, some of you are mentioning the Vlad Guerrero factor. If the plans were to have Vlad play in 2020 it would make sense to extend JD and have them cover the corners, or Vlad plays the OF. And there’s DH.
My guess is it never happened, and Heyman owed Shapiro a favor. The favor: write a bogus story, make the Jays front office look good to their fanbase by using Arrieta and JD and claim to have a legitimate source within the organization. Agents are perceived somewhat negatively by fans so this could be a plausible sell.
Heyman should apply to New York Times.
mrtdueck
Comments actually more entertaining than article 🙂
Solaris601
Hard to imagine Shapiro making any player an offer like that especially when the org is saddled with the immovable, unplayable Tulo for years to come. Bottom line is TOR is free and clear of Donaldson as well as the decision of whether to offer him the QO.
