Even though the Reds are out of contention and right-hander Matt Harvey is a pending free agent, the club opted against trading him to the NL Central rival Brewers before last month’s waiver deadline. Milwaukee won the claim for Harvey, but it turns out the Brewers only offered “Triple-A non-prospects” for the 29-year-old, Jon Heyman of Fancred hears. Considering that, not to mention Reds owner Bob Castellini’s reported affinity for Harvey, Cincinnati kept the ex-Met and will likely try to prevent him from leaving via free agency. Pitching will be an area of focus in general for the Reds during the offseason, per Heyman, who adds they may also be on the lookout for one or two outfielders.
More rumblings from Heyman…
- Royals general manager Dayton Moore said back in April that the team wants skipper Ned Yost around beyond this season. At 46-94, the Royals have since endured a horrific campaign. Nevertheless, Yost remains in their plans, Heyman reports, adding that they plan to offer him a one-year extension. Whether Yost wants to keep the job for 2019, when he’ll turn 64 years old, isn’t yet clear. Yost is in his ninth season as the Royals’ manager, with the team’s World Series title in 2015 serving as the crowning achievement of his tenure.
- Blue Jays first baseman Justin Smoak cleared trade waivers last month, but “a couple teams” did check in on him and some of Toronto’s relievers, Heyman writes. That’s not surprising in Smoak’s case, as the switch-hitter’s amid a second straight strong offensive season and comes with another affordable year of team control in the form of an $8MM club option. Perhaps the clubs that have shown interest in him this season will circle back over the winter, then.
- Earlier this summer, Orioles vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette denied a report that the O’s had interviewed former Dodgers GM Ned Colletti for a front office position. However, an interview between one of Orioles owner Peter Angelos’ sons and Colletti did occur, according to Heyman. It’s still not known which position the two sides discussed, though, nor is it clear if Baltimore continues to have interest in Colletti. Notably, Duquette is about to reach the end of his contract – which could put the O’s in the market for a new baseball operations chief – but it’s not a lock he and the club will part ways, Heyman writes.

What are “Triple-A non-prospects”? Any guesses on specific
tharrie0820
players like Tim Dillard. career minor leaguers
twentyforty
All of Milwaukees remaining prospects are non-prospects.

Clueless
la verdad
From MLB.com
“Headlined by three Top 100 prospects in second baseman Keston Hiura, the Brewers’ first-rounder in 2017, and right-handers Corbin Burnes and Woodruff, Milwaukee’s system is a product of smart drafting and savvy trades by general manager David Stearns. In total, 27 of the Brewers’ Top 30 prospects for 2018 entered the system via the Draft (19 players) or trades (eight).
Many of them could soon be in the big leagues, too, as the Brewers have 20 prospects slated to arrive in the next two years.”
I think twentyforty needs to look up the meaning of non-prospects because he is clearly confused.
Phanatic 2022
That’s not true… they have a 2nd base prospect who is top 10
RedRooster
Should have taken those “Triple-A non-prospects” and then signed Harvey in the offseason if they like him so much (which, idk why they would).
bradthebluefish
My understanding is that some teams don’t want to trade their veteran pitchers only to watching their rookies struggle and hurt their bullpen and their arms.
redsfan54
Because by trading him it gives him the opportunity to see if he likes another origination, which could hurt the Reds chances in resigning him. Plus, by keeping him it hopefully makes him feel wanted in Cincinnati. As for why would they resign him, maybe because he’s shown signs of recovering from his injuries and has played well with Cincinnati? That’s why
RedRooster
Oh yeah teams are just pushing and shoving each other over to sign Matt Harvey XD XD XD
If they trade him then offer him the most money in the offseason, he’s not going to take a pay cut to play elsewhere.
jbigz12
How many times are you going to post this? Is getting Jabari blash worth it? If you intend on resigning the guy, you really want to diminish the chance even .01 % for a Jabari blash or insert your favorite 4A player here? I certainly don’t.
RedRooster
I’m going to keep posting it until people stop saying “What if they want to sign him?” whenever the question of why a rebuilding team didn’t trade a pending free agent is posed.
And I’d take Jabari Blash over Matt Harvey any day. At least Jabari Blash isn’t a clubhouse cancer.
JKB 2
Why would the Reds take non prospects “then resign him” non prospects mean NOT a prospect so why give him to the Brewers for nothing. They can just keep him and try to resign him before the season ends or if need be as a free agent but Brewers offered zero!
augold5
“Non-Prospects” can still become productive ML players. Just because one organization doesn’t view them as ML players doesn’t mean they won’t or can’t be. Players like Jesus Aguilar, Manny Pina, Erik Kratz and Keon Broxton were deemed “non-prospects” and one point in time, but have been instrumental in the brewers success over the last couple years
hiflew
Yeah, and plenty of non-prospects can also be signed as minor league free agents during the off season. As a GM, you don’t want to set a precedent as someone that will just roll over and give assets away. Rebuilding teams are not required to help out teams going for it unless it benefits them. Obviously the Reds did not feel the Brewers offer benefited them enough.
augold5
I’m not blaming the Reds for not trading him, just pointing out that “non-prospects” can still be valuable
RedRooster
You’re forgetting the part where trading Harvey wouldn’t have barred the Reds from signing him.
LordBanana
Life ain’t a video game, that’s not really how it works
astick
And people ripped the FO for not trading him.
afsooner02
Brewers are doing just fine without a ho-hum Harvey. Glad we didn’t give up anything to get an overrated 3 month rental.
astick
Let me understand this, you’re happy they didn’t give up a non prospect for a starting pitcher?
afsooner02
Yup….you read that correctly. Harvey is 10000% not better than anyone else on our starting 5. Just look how Gio pitched today.
Phanatic 2022
You are correct. The brewers should slot Harvey into the number one slot come playoffs….tool
JKB 2
Sorry genius it would have been a one month rental. You see it would have been a trade on Aug 31. Meaning one month
afsooner02
Include the playoffs and were closer to 2 months…..who cares….he’s still a rental.
bradthebluefish
Yankees could have used a 1B. Should have gone after Justin Smoak to go along with J.A. Happ.
jdgoat
I’m pretty surprised they didn’t. That was a clear hole and that’s a great fit.
Old User Name
Luke Voit is doing just fine thank you.

Is 5-6 starts of Matt Harvey worth more than “AAA Non Prospects”?
What a dumb report.

With the way Tellez has started off, Smoak would be viewed as expendable. Not likely he keeps up his torrid pace, but he doesn’t have to. He looks good. Small sample size.
VancouverBlueJays
Unless Smoak is willing to sign a bargain 5-year $25 Million contract extension (Smoak’s vacuum-like glove will age very well); as good as Smoak is, at his age, he is nearing/at the tail-end of his prime, so as long as the Blue Jays can get close to fair value for him, Smoak should be traded. IF Tellez’s hitting AND defence are competent enough for Rowdy to be the starting 1B in 2019, then great. If not, then go with Morales as the 2019 starting 1B; it’ll be a rebuilding year anyway, so unless another team is actually willing to make a
non-salary-dump trade offer for Morales, you may as well have Kendrys mentor some of these young hitters in 2019.
jbigz12
Morales hasn’t played a full season at 1B since 09. He hasn’t been out there for more than 30 games since 13. He’s not going a full year at first.
VancouverBlueJays
It doesn’t matter if Morales hasn’t played at 1B for years. The team is likely stuck with the last year of Kendrys’ contract and his poor defence won’t mean much in a rebuilding year. Morales playing 3 out of every 4 games at the least-demanding defensive position is a reasonable expectation.
Unlike Smoak’s contract, which will have takers; Morales’ contract is not likely going anywhere.
jbigz12
Then play Tellez or possibly Russ Martin because I highly doubt Morales is even capable of playing everyday at 1B.
VancouverBlueJays
Hopefully, Tellez’s player development is improved by sending him back down to the Minors; I don’t know if in fact it is better served; I’m just a keyboard jockey. Even if the ideal is that Rowdy plays so well, that he locks down the 1B’s job. Because the Blue Jays are stuck with their guaranteed MLB contracts, they need to somehow utilize Morales and Martin. I’ve looked it up; Martin has not even once, played 1B at the MLB level, but yeah, I can them transitioning him to be the starting 1B; mainly because Smoak is a good trade asset.
its_happening
Smoak is not part of the Jays future and is a player they need to deal for something in the offseason. He is a piece teams with a void at 1B can use next year. Need to find a trade partner and make it count.
As for Tellez, 2019 should be a season for the Jays to find out what they can get out of Rowdy. Either he performs, or the Jays have a decision to make in 2020 when more young players come up. In 2020 the infield could be Bichette, Gurriel, Biggio and Vlad. Tellez rakes in 2019 and he’s going to figure in the plans in 2020.
justin-turner overdrive
Either extend him or trade him, such a stupid move by the Reds.
its_happening
Having a hard time believing Heyman on this one. Besides the whole Donaldson extension stuff, it takes 8 days after the deadline to find out some teams called about Smoak? And how serious were the calls? Serious enough to begin possible trade scenarios?
seanwh01
Yost stays as long as he wants. He earned it and his value is in building up a young team into a contender. This is the best situation for him as long as he wants to manage.
Showtimecalls
Yost sucks…the royals won despite his foolish managing skills. And alot of luck that year.
He hasnt developed anybody hes pretty much pushed back developments on a handful of solid players.
Not to memtion he has ruined players like salvy by having him catch that many games each year while suffering from a lower back problem
Brewers fired him just before the playoffs started for a reason. The guy can’t manage a rotation or bullpen.
Hopefully hes done
seanwh01
Yost has a WS ring, proving you 100% wrong.
Showtimecalls
Lmao the team won inspite of yost.
You do know sometimes overrated managers get praise for players doing their job and winning. I bet YOU THINK any manager with a ring is great..lol
If you watched them everyday youd see he sit out hot players when the offense is going well he would change the lineup.
Leave starting pitchers in too long. Never could manage a bullpen. The guy is garbage as a manager. His former outfield coach and first base coach was a better fit for a manager as he actually worked with the players not like yost who said on many occassions they bunt when they want they steal when they want. I let them make the decisions themselves. That not developing players thats a lazy ass manager with no game management skills
Pops
I hope Duquette is Done. Next guy should be able to hire his own manager too.
