Some items out of San Francisco…
- Royals assistant GM Scott Sharp, Brewers assistant GM Matt Arnold, and Blue Jays VP of baseball operations Ben Cherington have all been linked to the Giants’ general manager position, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe writes. Going into more detail on Cherington, Cafardo believes Cherington’s use of both traditional scouting and modern analytics makes him an ideal all-around candidate for both the Giants and Mets jobs, as Cherington is reportedly also under consideration in New York.
- Hunter Pence may have played his last game in a Giants uniform on Sunday, but the veteran outfielder tells reporters (including Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area) that he isn’t ready to retire. In fact, he said he plans to “reinvent myself” after two unproductive seasons; Pence intends to overhaul his swing this offseason, and is planning a winter ball stint in Mexico or the Dominican Republic. “I feel strong, I feel healthy, I feel fast. I’m going to work on flexibility and changing my swing completely. I want to still play. It’s uncertain — hopefully I can find an opportunity, and I’m going to look for it,” Pence said.
- Free agents Derek Holland and Nick Hundley are both hoping to return to the Giants in 2019, the duo told reporters (including NBC Sports Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic). Holland signed a minor league deal last February but will command a much more significant commitment this winter after posting a 3.57 ERA, 8.9 K/9, and 2.52 K/BB rate over 171 1/3 innings. He’d be a nice addition to the Giants’ rotation if the price is right, given how many lingering injury questions remain within the team’s pitching staff. Hundley has spent the last two years with the Giants as Buster Posey’s backup, and Pavlovic notes that the team would prefer a veteran backup presence behind the plate given that Posey will be recovering from hip surgery.

Really hoping for Cherington in SF. If they don’t get him id enjoy seeing Sabean step back into the GM role for a year or two until the right hire comes along rather than go with Sharp or Arnold. Picking the wrong GM just seems too costly to risk it when you’ve got a badass in your front office already in Sabean
JoeyPankake
It would be great if the Giants can get Holland back on the cheap, but they should give the back up catcher job to Aramis Garcia. Hundley is pretty bad defensively.
BlueSkyLA
After such a nice bounce-back season, why would Holland sign anywhere for cheap? He achieved the value rebuild he was after by signing on the cheap this year. He will be after a much better contract for himself this offseason.
Texassooner
It’s interesting that Holland told a Dallas reporter he was hoping the Rangers would bring him back to Texas.
Jean Matrac
That’s not really what he said. He said that he would love to return to the Rangers, which is different. I noticed when he said that, because him liking a return to the Giants had been previously reported. But doesn’t every player say something similar to that about his current or old team? I mean, have you ever heard player say no, he’s not interested in returning to any team?

Most pitchers would rather call Willie Mays Park home than the ballpark at Arlington. Especially those pitchers with an issue giving up homers.

As a Red Sox fan, I can say that Cherington isn’t a great option as a GM, considering how he left things in Beantown upon departure. What I will say is that he flipped the dreadful 2012 into a world series 2013 for us and I think that’s the kind of job the Giants would be looking for. I’m sure he’s also learned from his post 2013 mistakes and could be an asset to a club looking for a quick rebuild

Fyi, it’s quicker to just type Boston instead of “beantown”

Haiku is 5/7/5
But poetic nonetheless

Not a die hard Red Sox fan, but Cherington was not GM until after 2011 season, he may have helped with the trade of 2007, but Epstein was GM. He resigned before the end of the 2015 season. Red Sox won it all in 2013, But were one of the worst teams in 2012,2014, and 2015, under Cherington’s watch. Dummy is such a strong word… As an A’s fan I do kind of want the Giants to hire Cherington though.
deweybelongsinthehall
Cherington’s big mistakes in Boston were financial as in Sandoval, Hanley and Castillo. Also I believe Moncada was on his watch and so far it seems like DD’s trade of him (in part) for Sale has saved that signing.
pustule bosey
What is it with A’s fans? You want to perpetuate a 1 sided rivalry.
semut
Wolf – as a Dodger fan living in sf, I hear giants fans talk trash about the a’s more than any other team. Not sure what you mean by one-sided rivalry (though I will agree it’s an absolutely pointless rivalry – you’re not even in the same leagues!!)
jakem59
There was no GM in Boston at the time of the Hanley trade, Theo resigned and Cherington and a couple others were running the show until they resigned Theo in January or so. Theo was also not a fan of that trade as he deemed Hanley untouchable

What’s the name of the lady who is the Yankees AGM? She’s from San Fran, could be worth a look. We certainly need a new fresh outlook. With regards to possibly trading Bum, I’d again look at the Yankees as an option, think Bum deserves to have a little say in it too, could change the franchise going forward
puigpower
Kim Ng

Puke Power
Jean Matrac
Nope. He’s thinking of Jean Afterman. She’s the NYY’s AGM and is from SF. Kim Ng is not from SF.
aussiegiants53
That’s her! Thanks mate, I’m sure they’ll cast a wide net trying to find the right fit
nentwigs
MadBum deserves to be on a team that can support him with runs and also a bullpen that can keep from giving up runs. That’s what he will be looking for as a free agent. The current Giants can deliver neither.
Support the upcoming fundraiser!! A collection is being started to raise money for a payment to Melancon so he will opt out of the last two years of his contract.
pustule bosey
Bum has been on that team before, it was called the giants. He should probably be traded but not for the reasons you say.

Giants now in search of everything
