There still isn’t much clarity in the Mets’ still-nascent search for new front office leadership. But there are some interesting names being talked about as factoring in still-unknown ways. Joel Sherman of the New York Post recently argued that the club should be willing to spurn convention, even posing the possibility of some agents being considered. Evidently that’s not out of the question, as Andy Martino of SNY.tv hears that the club has at least considered the possibility of hiring from the ranks of prominent player reps. It seems the club is still in the brainstorming phase of the effort. Internal possibilities, however, don’t seem likely, per Martino. Indeed, assistant GM John Ricco said yesterday that he doesn’t consider himself a candidate, as Tim Healey of Newsday tweets.
Here are some more notes on front office and managerial movement from around the game …
- Even as he prepares to wrap up his playing career with the Mets, David Wright seems to be looking forward to a future in a front office capacity. As Martino reports, Wright has made clear he isn’t interested in working as a member of the field staff or as a TV commentator, but does believe he could “provide value” in an advisory capacity to the New York brass next season. Martino argues that it’s an easy call for the organization to utilize Wright in some manner. It’ll be interesting to see what the future may hold.
- One potential candidate for front office leadership positions is Cubs exec Jason McLeod. As Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times explores, the availability of some large-market jobs could conceivably pique McLeod’s interest in leaving a place he’s obviously comfortable. In addition to the Mets opening, the Giants are looking for new baseball ops leadership — a situation we touched upon earlier today.
- Rangers GM Jon Daniels discussed the team’s preliminary preparations to replace just-fired skipper Jeff Banister, as Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports. Though the organization has already compiled a list of names, it hasn’t begun lining up interviews. No doubt that’ll change as the regular season draws to a close. The slate of possibilities will also likely evolve, says Daniels, who added that there’s no specific timeline in mind.
- The Reds announced a pair of promotions yesterday. Shawn Pender will become VP of player development, while Eric Lee becomes the team’s senior director of player development. Clearly, both will be trusted with bringing along the organization’s young talent. But the intake process is still in line for change as well. The club is seeking an international scouting director in advance of some ramped-up efforts there, with MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon noting that president of baseball operations Dick Williams suggested it’s likely to be an outside hire.
- In other international scouting news, Kiley McDaniel of Fangraphs has tweeted a few recent moves. Frankie Thon has bounced from the Angels to the Mariners, taking over as international scouting director in Seattle. Likewise, the Mets will lose their international scouting director Chris Becerra, who is expected to take a job with the Red Sox.

Unrelated to the article but Sox fans might like to know that Jerry Remy has completed his treatments and is expected to make a NESN appearance during the third inning of tonight’s 2nd game.
MetsYankeesRedSox
What’s the prognosis? He’s had a tough run so far. Second time too, right?
deweybelongsinthehall
Haven’t heard but he tweeted himself yesterday about being done and visiting tonight so I assume the prognosis is positive considering it’s his sixth round of treatment.
slapnuts
No Einstein, he’s referring to another kiddo that’s been all over the news

Thanks for the update Dewey

I would think the Reds Player Development would be totally overhauled instead of people getting promoted.
Out of place Met fan
4 months in and still brainstorming; moving at a snail’s pace yet want to hire someone by the second week of November. Working from whatever list that have, shouldn’t a few cursary interviews have been conducted with some that are not currently aligned with a ML team?

Apparently no GM is interested in a cut-rate salary? What is it with the Mets?? I thought the debt juggling and sale of ownership shares had moved the Mets into a much better financial position after the Madoff troubles
deweybelongsinthehall
No one talks about but I believe they used future Madoff projections when they committed to finance their share of Citifield. They are a cash cow but their debt load is still I believe high and they run the team like their real estate business. They seem to want a safe return and while having a good payroll, they refuse to go over the top for the sake of generating a higher return. Other owners are willing to take less of a return for the shot at the brass ring (or diamond encrusted in the case of a WS ring).

The Mets are desperately seeking coverage, as the Yanks march to the playoffs….and they’re making this search look more detailed than the SCOTUS one; let’s hope none of the candidates lies about being a party animal, 35 years ago……
They probably already know who they will pick…..probably the guy who’ll work for the cheapest…..That said, it’s not a TERRIBLE situation…money available, decent farm system, etc….somebody can put it together……
bigkempin
Money available? You realise this is Fred Wilpon you’re talking about, right? You know….the whole Madoff scheme and his running of the Mets like a small market team.
inkstainedscribe
IOW, the Mets have no idea what they’re doing and no clue what direction to take.

It actually sounds like everyone in the Mets org knows exactly what to do… except the owner.
Jjh59
It always comes down to the owner.

Rangers! Please take Clint Hurdle back. Please! I’d take Jeff Banister back in Pittsburgh in a second! Please!!!
Dutch Vander Linde
I’m calling it. New Mets GM David Wright.

If this was 50 years ago, I’d say ya, give it a whirl. But the job has changed so much, I doubt he’s ready for the Big Chair.
That said, obviously he’s a pretty bright guy, and would be an asset to any FO, especially the Mets. Get him going as the third-in-command maybe, and let him grow into it.
Doing it right now would probably mean some nin-com-poop like Richardi is really pulling the strings…..

Well…..he is still under contract for a couple years…LOL

No Chance Wright is hired

I think Snell had a great year but he didn’t cost Sale the Cy Young, Cora did. What a butthead to keep it clean. The line-up he put out there for game 2 isn’t a good AA team. A catcher in right botches one Mookie would have caught and it costs Sale two earned runs. The team can’t score so it costs him a win. When the Cy Young voting happens they look at the lack of innings (caused by an over-caution first time manager), ERA which was significantly affected by Cora playing non-starters in almost EVERY start for Sale this year, and Wins which were impacted by not playing starters or playing Devers (worst 3B in baseball). All Cora decisions have led to Sale being eliminated from the Cy Young race. He clobbered JD Martinez by moving him to the 4 hole where he lost a ton of RBI opportunities and at bats late in games. JD got hurt in his MVP bid by Cora. He’s the main reason we are where we are and deserves the MVP over Mookie but it’s close!!
Cora’s mothering approach clearly affects the guys who want to play and win. If they don’t win it all then Cora’s going to have to stop quoting what he did in Houston because it didn’t work in Boston!!! I hope every day that something happens to prevent him from returning as manager next year. Worst manager they’ve had that I can remember. Hire an advisor for him if he must stay. He needs help with line-ups, pitching and resting players. He’s clueless in all three areas. They could have won 120 if he wasn’t the manager!! JD is the reason we improved so much NOT CORA.

Fortunately, the majority of the voter base has moved away from wins and RBI’s as anything more than window dressing.

So we’ve rested everyone more than they wanted, especially Sale, JD and Kimbrel and they aren’t looking better than they did earlier when they were getting regular play, they are looking far worse. Great prep for the playoffs Cora!! Oh yeah, that’s what Houston did so it has to work here. After all these teams are identical, the personalities handle sitting the same way and of course the most important thing, we will romp through the playoffs just like Houston. Hey Cora, we don’t have their pitching especially with the way you’ve screwed up Sale, we don’t have the relievers they had but I do believe we have a stronger hitting team and defensive team if Devers sits. So, how much does REST make a difference to professional ballplayers? Cora was a scrub as a player so he doesn’t understand what he’s doing to elite guys like Sale, JD and Kimbrel. He’s using the monkey see monkey do approach mimicking Houston from last year. Why is he the manager and not just a bench coach? Couldn’t he have been just as effective in helping Mookie and others believe in themselves as a coach not a manager? Seems like that is his greatest strength (maybe his only strength when comes to managing). It would have been nice to have a guy who could figure out we start our line-up EVERY DAY with Betts, Benintendi and JD. It would have been nice to have a guy who could figure out when not to throw kerosene on the fire by bringing in guys like Kelly, Hembree and others in stress situations. It would have been nice to have had a manager who didn’t sit superstars in April when there were rain days about once a week. See the rain day is a day off!! It would have been nice if we had a manager who didn’t take the foot off the gas in September. Sure, lighten up the pressure, but taking the foot off the gas by sitting Sale and costing him a Cy Young? Cora consistently gave guys days off when they didn’t want them because they had an open day that week, which is a day off!
I love the Red Sox but I don’t see how they can have their train stopped by their manager and then be expected to have it steaming immediately as they enter the playoffs. Beating up Baltimore twice today would have been good for the team to regain some of their confidence, especially for Sale. Using Kimbrel more than once a week might keep him sharper!! Stop rewarding bench guys with playing time because you’ve clinched. It hurts the starters. Oh yeah, but I must be wrong because it worked in Houston last year! You better be right Cora that it’s going to work for Boston or you will be roasted the entire off season!!! I promise.

It’s a mystery to me why Red Sox fans are generally regarded as obnoxious and annoying outside of New England. I cannot see how they got that reputation.
bcard12
I’m a life long Sox fan from Massachusetts and kd17 is out of his mind. The Sox managers and players meet every single day to discuss these exact topics. Not one person has complained other than fans. All it is, is his way of preparing for an excuse if the Sox lose in the playoffs. He’s preparing for a really good team like the astros or Indians to win and he will have his out. Sad to say but most Sox fans are preparing excuses for why we will lose, rather that sit back and enjoy the ride.
Kingmojo101
Any reason why dipoto keeps hiring and signing current and former angels players and staff? They didn’t work in Anaheim so what makes them think they’ll work in Seattle.
