Athletics prospect Jesus Luzardo recently changed representation and is now a client of the Boras Corporation, as ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick first reported via Twitter.
Luzardo, 20, has had a meteoric rise in 2018 and is among the game’s more highly regarded prospects, having ascended from Class-A Advanced all the way up to Triple-A this season. Along the way, he’s pitched to a combined 2.88 ERA with 10.6 K/9 against 2.5 BB/9 and allowed just seven homers in 109 1/3 innings of work.
Luzardo was considered a high-risk prospect, and perhaps still is, when the A’s acquired him alongside Blake Treinen in the July 2017 trade that sent Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson from Oakland to Washington. He’d undergone Tommy John surgery prior to being drafted in the third round by the Nats in 2016 and, at the time of the trade, had pitched just 13 2/3 professional innings. That trade could scarcely have worked out better for the A’s at this point, as Treinen has stepped up as an elite reliever in his own right, while Luzardo could be knocking on the door of a big league promotion next season as a 21-year-old.
The A’s don’t currently have many Boras clients on the roster, though Luzardo joins two of the team’s best players, Matt Chapman and Sean Manaea, in that regard. The change in representation has been reflected in MLBTR’s Agency Database, which contains representation info on upwards of 3,000 Major League and Minor League players. Showman P.T. Barnum kept his show going forever with the motto: “one born every day”
People should read about the man sometime and how he cajoled his “people” to work for him and all the gimmicks he’d employ.. A lot like Boras.
majorflaw
“Showman P.T. Barnum . . . A lot like Boras.”
That’s one of the stupidest comments ever posted here. Congratulations, I think.
User 4245925809
Could respond to that insult with something about how barnum would transform sometimes normal people into freaks of nature for people to gawk at, just like boras attempts to do the same with many of “his” players… Example being ollie perez who he ran around 1 particular winter meeting with his little books, giving them out where his all 1 sided statistics (some made up) had him on the level of a Randy Johnson..
Don’t tell me this guy isn’t any prima donna carnival barker. he may be BIGGER than ‘ole PT.

“He may be BIGGER than ‘ole PT.”
Difficult to have a serious debate with you when you botched your entire premise:
“P.T. Barnum kept his show going forever with the motto: “one born every minute.. “
Nope.
quoteinvestigator.com/2014/04/11/fool-born/
I’m pretty familiar with Phineas T. Got anything else?
“Could respond to that insult . . .”
What insult? My comment was directed at your comment and said nothing at all about you personally. You may be a fine fellow for all I know. But that was and still is a dumb, ill informed comparison.
“ . . . with something about how Barnum would transform sometimes normal people into freaks of nature for people to gawk at . . . “
And you think this is comparable to Boras asking too much for some of the players he represents exactly how?
User 4245925809
Knew well the exact quote and chose to leave out a particular word on purpose in case would get caught up in moderation here.
Stand by the the comparison still.

silver: Excellent comparison between Boras and Barnum. Boras has extracted more money out of MLB GMs with smoke, mirrors and the occasional threat of; “You ain’t the only team with a checkbook!”.
Danw1444
Boras= scumbag. I guess the A’s have one less thing to worry about in the sense that they do not need to try to extend Luzardo. Unfortunately, Chapman also has Boras.
jdgoat
Boras is good at his job, not exactly a scumbag
Michael Chaney
He’s definitely good at his job but also kind of a scumbag so I agree with both of you
getright11
Like you know the man, lmao

Name one story of why Boras is a scumbag other than he knows how to get his clients a very good return.
The only time I can think of is when players like Moustakas had to wait out the market and lose money over the QO.
Braveslifer
Ask Chipper Jones his opinion.

Only asking Chipper of his fondest memories of Hooters.

Moustakas is a great example, and

Even with the vast majority of players being happy they chose Boras as their agent, there will always be a few counter-examples against him, and in Werth’s case, the Boras Corp claims they documented every communication they made with every team, and I would expect that from any agency.
I doubt Werth was privy to every day-to-day communication that Boras had with teams; most players just want the broad picture. They don’t want to be bombarded with every little negotiating ploy agencies use.
Considering that Boras got him his albatross of a contract in the first place, he’s still a “net positive” for Werth. I’m 100% certain Werth would rather have his 7-year contract in 2010 (that NO OTHER AGENT would have secured) than had a better offer to ride the bench in 2018.
bkwalker510
Yeah, what a scumbag trying to get money from owners that a player deserves. Smh
arc89
When you have a $20 beer at the game thank Boras for that. When tickets are $50 each thank Boras. Boras has ruined as many careers as he helped.
JJB
That’s not how it works, but hey, everybody believes their own version of #FakeNewz nowadays, so enjoy.
arc89
You believe the owners will take money out of their pockets? No they don’t just raise up the prices for the suckers. Boras is the first one to claim collusion when his player doesn’t get what Boras promises him.
davidcoonce74
Scott Boras has never filed a collusion claim in his 30+ year career as a player agent. But keep going on, defending billionaire owners against millionaire players. This is fun.
cmancoley
I don’t understand
Meow Meow
Everyone repeat after me:
Player payroll isn’t what increases stadium pricing. But the owners would sure love for fans to blame it on the players.
davidcoonce74
Yep, exactly this; most of the money that walks into a stadium doesn’t leave the stadium. 40% goes to the visiting team, and then the team has to pay security, the ticket takers, staff, utilities, etc. The vendors are generally contracted out and pick their own prices for beer and food and etc. as the market will bear.
davidcoonce74
Not remotely how the system works but believe whatever the team tells you.
JJB
TRADE THIS PUNK NOW! How dare he put his own interests first and hire an agent who is great at what he does. I’m burning my Luzardo jersey and boycotting all Athletics games… even though I’ve never attended one yet. THEY’LL SEE THOUGH!!!
JJB
Hey guys, I just TWEETED at the Oakland Athletics Twitter account and told them I’m done!
That’ll show them, right? They’ll make Luzardo fire Boras now, won’t they?
#Fantasygeekland
LOLOL
fs54
Nationals must be regretting trading this guy. A’s fleeced Nationals in that trade.
Codeeg
It was a fair return when you know how to assess the risk.
Luzardo still hasn’t done anything in the majors, and what he was when traded was much lower than he’s at now.
baseballhobo
I don’t believe teams regret trades. They can’t predict how a trade will turn out.
#Fantasygeekland
They can wish in hindsight that they didn’t make a trade which is the same thing as regret
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Oh, they regret trades. Ask the Red Sox and Padres about Anthony Rizzo.
julyn82001
Boras is what the ideal attorney should be: represent our rights! In this case, Scott represents his players and he mostly does it to high standards, the way is supposed to be…
thegreatcerealfamine
He’s a salesman, and a damn fine one.
majorflaw
“He’s a salesman, and a damn fine one.”
Correct. Never understood the folks who condemn the man for doing his job well. Boras has been representing players for more than thirty years, iirc. While he has mis-timed the market and overreached on occasion, overall his clients have been very well represented—and that’s all that matters. He isn’t supposed to represent MLB or the individual teams, they have their own professionals representing them.
its_happening
If you are a rising star you want to hire one of the best. Boras is one of the best.
DarkSide830
As much as I loathe his impact on the game, I can’t argue with his quality of work.
davidcoonce74
What is his “impact on the game exactly?
Lovetron
Considering that Lizard Jesus hasn’t even broke the 40man yet, I’m not at all worried about who his agent is. If he breaks the bank in 6 years, that likely means he had an impact in those 6 years.. and as a long-term A’s fan, that’s about the best we can hope for realistically.
I’m much more worried about what happens with Krush Davis.
