11:57am: Sherman tweets that Adams has been informed by the team that he will indeed be promoted to make his Major League debut Saturday.
9:53am: Barring a “last-second shift in plans,” the Yankees will promote pitching prospect Chance Adams to make his Major League debut Saturday, reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post (on Twitter). The YES Network’s Jack Curry suggested on last night’s post-game show that Adams could be an option Saturday.
The 23-year-old Adams will have the unenviable task of making his debut against a loaded Red Sox lineup. He’ll also need to be added to the 40-man roster, though the Yankees have an open spot at present, so there’ll be no need to designate someone for assignment or make a 60-day DL move to accommodate the likely promotion.
[Related: New York Yankees depth chart]
Adams has long rated as one of the organization’s top prospects and entered the season widely ranked as one MLB’s top 100 overall minor leaguers. The start to the year for Adams, though, proved to be disastrous. Through his first 10 starts, the former fifth-round pick (2015) was mauled for a 5.93 ERA as he allowed 22 walks and eight homers through just 44 innings.
However, Adams has largely turned his season around in short order. Over the past 11 starts, he’s looked like a different pitcher, notching a 3.33 ERA with just three home runs allowed in 56 frames. He’s still walked too many batters in that time (26), but Adams has displayed a penchant for missing bats for most of the season. His recent improvements have left him with solid, if unspectacular overall numbers in 2018: a 4.50 ERA, 9.4 K/9, 4.4 BB/9, 1.01 HR/9 and a 43 percent ground-ball rate in 98 Triple-A innings.
The Yankees’ current rotation is in a state of flux following the addition of Lance Lynn and J.A. Happ (who has since been placed on the disabled list) prior to Tuesday’s non-waiver trade deadline. New York announced yesterday that struggling right-hander Sonny Gray is headed to the bullpen, with Lynn stepping into the starting five to take his place. The plan had been for righty Luis Cessa to start while Happ recovers from hand, foot and mouth disease, but Cessa was called upon for 3 2/3 innings of relief last night and was clobbered for five runs on seven hits and a walk in that appearance.
It doesn’t seem all that likely that Adams will be a long-term addition to the rotation this time around, though he obviously has a chance to factor into the team’s plans further down the line. A strong first showing this weekend against a tough opponent would go a long way toward earning him additional looks later this season.
Given the timing of his first call to the Majors, Adams’ earliest path to free agency would come upon completion of the 2024 season, and he wouldn’t be eligible for arbitration until after the 2021 season. Of course, further time spent in the minor leagues could alter both of those timelines.

These are desperate times indeed!

Hey, you gotta take a Chance.
Samuel
Yankees are done. similarities to the Nationals…..
Little starting pitching, with none in the pipeline ready to come in and take a spot – meaning that Tommy Milone and Lance Lynn get recycled as starters.
Predictable now teams that power pitches and swings from the heels….hitting into shifts. They cannot bunt, steal bases (with a few exceptions). execute the hit-and-run, make defensive plays. In short, they only can win if they out-pitch and/or out-hit the opposition that day.
Two rookie managers that have demonstrated no feel for technically running a game. They want to be their players best friend. When their players are jaking it – as they have been for a month – these 2 never show they are upset – hugging the offending players, sweet-talking them, and making excuses for them to the media (“we know he’s going to figure it out”). It is left to the coaches to play bad-cop as the managers aren’t leading. In turn, this upsets veterans that are doing their part, which leads to a fractured clubhouse.
These 2 teams ran up a record beating up on crummy/rebuilding teams. But they’ve been exposed since the season went into the bend approaching the stretch run.
Sheev Palpatine
Are you trolling. They have a better record this season against teams over .500. Also, they still are 5.5 games up for the first Wild Card. The division may be lost, but they’re by no means out of the playoffs. You literally don’t have a clue.
joshua.barron1
My favorite line in that is:
“In short, they can only win if they out pitch and/or out hit the opposing team that day”
How else can you win?? Load up on errors?? Lol
thesheriffisnear
I laughed when I read that too. Might as well have just said “The only way this team can win is on days when they score more runs than their opponent.”
Samuel
Have you watched the Yankees play the past 3 weeks? They have lost at least 6 games they should have easily won.
Don’t drop meaningless “metrics” on me. I’ve been watching MLB games for over 60 years. Like horse racing, it’s not how you start….it’s how you finish.
Take the Indians. Since Terry Francona got there, they always finish the year strong. No need to sprint out of the gate and peak between mid-May and the All-Star game. The Indians, Astros, and Sox are set for the stretch run. When Magic Johnson played basketball he always referred to this point of the season as “Winnin’ Time”. The Yankee and Nationals players (except for Scherzer) look like they’re in a fog. Try watching some games.
Samuel
“I laughed when I read that too. Might as well have just said “The only way this team can win is on days when they score more runs than their opponent.”

Yes, I fully understand that that’s what you got out of it.
Now return to your computer games and rotisserie league.
PopeMarley
Talk about “in a fog”. Cereal and a few others were right, you definitely must be a Nats fan. By the way, it doesn’t matter how you finish a season, it’s what you do in the playoffs, just ask Francona.

Sheev Palpatine, I agree with all of this.
But the division isn’t lost. 🙂
Sale’s on the DL. Hopeful NYY wins next 3.
Bonus: Gray out of rotation. No more freebies
Perksy
You can’t compare the two teams. The Nats are not in the playoffs, yanks are. Also while yes it matters how you finish a season it’s only early August, there’s a lot of baseball left to be played. The starting rotation always had question marks, even before the season began. The bullpen is still the best, and they’ll get back Judge and Sanchez. Would I have liked a Girardi to have stayed as a manger? And provide discipline. Sure, but nothing we can do about it. The Phillies have an even softer manager in Kapler who is like the players best friend. They are still right in the thick of things.
djpiglatin
Your analogy works for first time mgrs but it stops there. The Nationals are vying for the wild card at best and the Yankees have the 2nd best record in baseball. Now that the Yanks are in a funk with injuries, the similarities and soliloquy’s are running rampant.
vmmercan 2
Not only are you wrong about how the Yankees’ arrived at their record, but you’re also wrong about their pipeline. Adams and Sheffield are both about MLB ready. That’s in addition to having six starters already on the roster, plus Cessa, who is a spot starter. Couldn’t be a further miss on analyzing their situation at present.
srechter
As others have said, you did a wonderful job describing the nationals right there. Not sure how any of that relates to the Yankees’ current season however.
thegreatcerealfamine
Great now a disgruntled Nats fan is gonna pop his head in and try a comparison. I guess he didn’t brush-up on the series against the Royals or Mets where the Yankees didn’t homer very much.
murphy
You can’t fix stupid.
Reggie Bars
This isn’t 1908. You don’t have to be good at bunting and the hit and run. And stealing bases isn’t that important either, except in fantasy leagues.
Bocephus
Did you watch the game?
southbeachbully
The one where the Yankees scored 7 runs off of 8 hits, 4 of which were home runs? Including a 3 run homer. Plain and simple, the Yanks didn’t love because they couldn’t steal a base or bunt. They scored 7 runs but they’re pitching sucked.
Judge Judy
Nothing in the pipeline?? Yankees have the top pitching prospect in mlb in Justus Sheffield!
Priggs89
“Top pitching prospect in mlb” outside of the 10+ guys that rank ahead of him on pretty much every site…

“ran up a record beating up on crummy/rebuilding teams” Your comprehension skills are zero. How about going back and looking at the Yankees W-L record against winning teams. #Troll post of year. Never seen a bigger “hot take”
“Take the Indians. Since Terry Francona got there, they always finish the year strong.”
The same team that finished strong up 2-0 on NYY, and ended up losing the series 3-2… Lol who cares? Playoffs is what it’s all about.
People forget that the 2017 Yankees, the team that was one game away from making the World Series, went 20-28 from mid-June to early-August… Good teams can suffer tough strides.
southbeachbully
“Little starting pitching, with none in the pipeline ready to come in and take a spot”.
Referencing a post that says “Yankees To Promote Chance Adams”.
southbeachbully
Bunts and SB? The Yanks are one of the best offensive teams in baseball and very few guys (Gardner…maybe Torreyes) should be bunting or stealing a bases on a team that leads the majors in HRS.. But for the record.
Yanks 10th in the AL with 8 and Red Sox 14th with 4,
I get it, small ball when the game is tight is understandable but on a team with such great hitters they might be running into outs. And it really isn’t about SB skill as much as it is about speed. A guy like Judge, Didi, Hicks, etc can steal a few using “technique” but the Yanks don’t have any flat-out speed guys since Gardner was younger and Ellsbury was healthy. Not even sure if they should be looking for those types honestly.
jmi1950
The Sox are 87 out 100 in SBs. Not only 1st in MLB but historically high %. .Great base stealers succeed 87%. not teams.
jmi1950
It’s not the lack of small ball. It’s all the K’s .

Why do some people care so much about spelling? Everybody is good at something and everybody is bad at something. I don’t understand the need to rub it in their face when a weakness is exposed. Besides, this is a baseball website, a simple spelling mistake shouldn’t take away or discount someone’s opinion on baseball. Remember, Shoeless Joe was completely illiterate and he was perhaps the purest hitter of all time.

Any chance for Gray to end up back in Oakland? Would he have trouble clearing waivers with an affordable year of control left and decent pitching stats away from New York or do the Yankees actually plan to carry him as a bullpen arm onto a playoff roster?
ThePriceWasRight
no chance. It’s highly likely a pitching needy team would put in a claim thinking they could have him for one more year. not to mention the yanks would be dumb to do this. the package they gave up was no joke. can’t punt because of one bad season.
deweybelongsinthehall
He’ll be traded in the off season.
Mattimeo09
For nickels
higgy2020
He can be left off the playoff roster without dfa. Who know mabey the pen will actually work out
Rocket32
It’s gonna take a lot more bad pitching from Gray for that to happen. The Yankees need pitching and he’s under cheap control for next season. Only way Gray leaves the Yankees before sometime during the regular season next year is in a trade. A pitching needy team like the Yankees wouldn’t just give up on a only 28 year old arm that comes with another season of cheap control that they just gave up some good young talent to acquire last season after one bad year.
Triteon
So you’re saying there’s a Chance?
bucketbrew35
Dammit you beat me to it!

No chance that rotation gets anywhere in the Postseason.
Adam6710
Sadly, I agree. That said, if Judge comes back strong, the offense get hot late, they may not need the rotation to do very much at all. Severino/Tanaka/Dregs may be enough.
I’m not feeling overly optimistic about it though.
deweybelongsinthehall
Might as well hand the pennant to the Astros now…Seriously, games today matter to get you to October but being hot at the right time is so important. Stanton or Judge can carry the Yankees the same way JDM or Betts can for Boston
thegreatcerealfamine
thanks Dewey, the Astros have problems of their own. The sky ain’t falling…wtf
Adam6710
Yes. That’s exactly what I just said.
Reggie Bars
But with that bullpen does it really matter that much?
diller79
They are so desperate because they are slowly realizing that the Red Sox are just flat out better then them
Adam6710
They are so desperate because all of the other options have been used or are injured.
And it is not a slow realization. The Yankees (and everyone else) knew the Red Sox were the better team probably in mid June.
thecoffinnail
Exactly, the Yankees won’t peak with this group of players for another year or two. Boston has peaked this year. They will be strong the next couple of years but they are going to start losing players to FA soon and can’t resign them all. DD was the wrong GM for them to bring in to follow Epstein and his protégés Charington. Boston fans just need to look at the Tigers and they will see their not too distant future. The Yankees are continuing to stock the farm and are trading close to ready prospects for prospects in A ball. They are rebuilding with the St Louis/Houston template and will be contenders for the next decade before a rebuild will be necessary again.
nats3256
I think the Yankees are realizing that it doesn’t matter if you score 8, if the other team scores 9.

Awesome. Throw him right in the deep end. Good way to see what he is made of.

Time to rely on that vaunted bullpen……and good to see what you you have on the prospect side….just hope Boony doesn’t do his usual wait too long to get him out of there if there’s trouble brewing and give the guy a chance (no pun) to perform and show em what he has.

Hi Steve, When does Sonny Gray become a 5 yr player? He had 4 yrs 61 days through 2017.; with 2 options left. Wouldn’t it be helpful to get him to AAA before he gets to 5 yrs so they can “rehab” is command?
fredv
If Severino is rained out does Chance Adams stay on the farm?
dust44
I don’t care who they r playing. I just want to c this kid. Trade deadline always throws a wrench in the rotation. Plus Gray and CC didn’t help much the last couple nights. Bring him up c what he can do. If he can go 5 that’s a win in my book
thecoffinnail
Heck, if he can avoid a 31 pitch first inning it’s a win in my book.
wicked pissah
I’m a Red Sox fan but I’m thinking Adams can pull it off. Someone the Sox haven’t seen yet. Might surprise everyone.
southpaw2153
Cessa needs to be released. Sick of that guy. Has good stuff but can never put it all together. His 2 previous good starts were a mirage. The Cessa from last night is the pitcher he is.
Bruin1012
You never know how a rookie pitcher will play in his debut. He seems to have some control issues in AAA so my guess is he will struggle some of the Sox can wait him out. The Sox haven’t seen this kid yet so he does have that advantage.
slider32
Most of the Sox players are in their prime, so they have 2 years to win, this Yankee team is very young adding 2 rookies this year, they are a year away from winnig it all.
jdgoat
Lmao. All the Red Sox good players are young
Bruin1012
One of the silliest comments made the Red Sox are very young. There core is every bit as young as the Yankees. If you want to argue that the Red Sox have more decisions to make in the next few years then yes they do but age is a silly comment. Unless all the 25 year olds on Boston are much older then the 25 year olds on New York.
bronxbombers
No farm system in Boston and it’s only getting worse with DD
Bruin1012
Doesn’t change the fact that all the key Red Sox players are young now does it?
jmi1950
All the key players are back next year except Kimbrel. The other FA’s are: Kelly, Pomerantz and the 3 rentals Pearce,Evoldi & Kinsler. Hopefully Pedroia & Wright can fill 2 spots. None of the 4 prospects traded for the 3 rentals were on anyone’s radar.

Some typical part-time Yankees fans outlook since the division is out of reach, nothing was expected from this year, and they will dominate fornyears. What these PT fail to admit is the obvious weaknesses of this Yankees team and if they’re not correctly addressed, 2019 will be the same.
Bruin1012
The Yankees issue is starting pitching and with the exception of Sevy there most reliable starters are either old or, as in the case of Masahiro, could break down at any time. I don’t see them really being able to address this issue without unloading the farm and getting DeGrom or someone like that. I really don’t see the Dodgers letting Kershaw go so no real difference maker free agent pitchers that I can think of. As always though the health of the team will go along way in determining who wins the division and who doesn’t for the next few years.
Bocephus
Their best hope in the FA market this winter is Patrick Corbin, but I’m not sure how big an add that is. Seems like Cashman went the cheap way in adding at the deadline, nothing that should worry the Indians, Astros, or the Sox. I’m in the minority never wanting to trade for Stanton, and if they are ousted early the majority will blame that trade especially this winter when they can’t sign Harper or Manny.
