The Yankees have announced that they have acquired shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria from the Pirates. Cash will also go to New York in the deal, with a player to be named later or cash considerations heading back to Pittsburgh. New York designated southpaw Ryan Bollinger to open a 40-man spot.
Hechavarria is not much of a hitter, but is widely regarded as a high-quality defender at shortstop. He’ll presumably be viewed as a late-inning defensive asset for the Yanks, who have a variety of options around the infield as situations warrant. And with Didi Gregorius still working back from injury, Hechavarria also represents something of an insurance policy.
Thus far in 2018, Hechavarria has slashed .254/.287/.342 in 284 plate appearances. That’s nearly an exact match for his lifetime batting line of .255/.291/.345, compiled over nearly three thousand trips to the plate, so there isn’t much mystery about his offensive capabilities.
With the glove, Hech continues to draw well-above-average grades, so the situation is clear there as well. He has played almost exclusively at short in his career, but did see time as a rookie at second and third base as well.
This is now the second time Hechavarria has changed hands in August. Earlier in the month, he went from the Rays to the Bucs. Now, he’ll move again, with both of those organizations still responsible for a portion of the remainder of his $5.9MM salary. Hechavarria will be a free agent at the end of the year.
While it’s still possible the Pirates will pick up a minor prospect in this swap, it seems rather clear that the move was designed to clear a bit of salary and keep the roster clear for younger players. As with the late-breaking trade of David Freese, the move came at the very tail end of tonight’s deadline for teams to acquire players with postseason eligibility.
It’s another unfortunate break for Bollinger in a season that has otherwise surely been out of a dream. He has twice made it onto the MLB roster after an unlikely journey, but has yet to throw a ball in a big-league contest. The 27-year-old carries a 3.87 ERA in 111 2/3 innings in the upper minors most of them at Double-A, with 7.8 K/9 against 2.7 BB/9.

“Now, he’ll move again, with both of those organizations still responsible for a portion of the remainder of his $5.9MM salary…”
portion! More like majority 😉
As part of the deal, the Pirates will send New York $863,709 to cover most of the $951,613 remaining in Hechavarria’s $5.9 million salary.

Defensive replacement in late innings most likely.
driftcat28 2
Good point didn’t think of that

It said that in the article

Look at the time. Maybe it didn’t when the article just came out.

Yankees GM: A -dein – y any more trades, I have Adeiny!
kimball0401
Good move I guess??
Gwynning's Anal Lover
Oh boy. I thought the Pirates were test driving him for next year and Jordy Mercer would have went to the Yankees instead. Between the moves with Freese, Adeiny, and once the season is over Harrison and Mercer, it opens the doors for Newman, Kramer, Reyes, and Moroff. Young Bucs once again.
kenneth cole
Why would the Yankees want Jordy Mercer? The reason they got Adeiny is because he’s an outstanding defender and instead of keeping Torreyes in the field at second, they can shift Torres to 2B late in games and throw Adeiny in. Torres has all the tools to be a plus SS but he’s way too raw there right now. Too many errors and his hands are faster than his brain.
I love this trade because it assures late game defense in September and is motivation for Torres to tighten up at short. I don’t think it has anything to do with Didi because he’s progressing fine. Adeiny isn’t a burner but he’s got good speed and can be a pinch runner for Didi too for precautionary reasons. His value is diminished when he comes back but this is a huge boost to the Yankees if needed. Cashman thinks outside the box.
Mercer to the Yankees, though? Come on man. That makes zero sense.

Also, as for a test drive, if the Pirates liked him, they can get him back in November, he’s a free agent !

Too bad they didn’t pick up Jerry Blevins, the the cast of Seinfeld would be back!!

Classic “bid on every player and ask roster questions later” approach by Cashman

Guesses on Sterling’s Home Run call???…not that he ever hits one…..
Gordon Lightfoot
… Sterling will find an appropriately cringeworthy phrase, I’m sure. Guy calls a good game, but his HR calls are awful.
kahnkobra
calls a good game? he’s only good when he fills in on wfan for a vacationing talkie in the winter

What a Hechofashot by Adeiny!! Wow, a hard task that one, lol

Here’s a few options:
“A-DEENY! SO MEANIE! It’s an A-Deeny Dinger deep into the right field seats!”
“Bebidas en mi! It’s Hechavarria Happy Hour as Adeiny knocks one back into the right field seats!”
“A-DEENY is a REBEL WITH A CAUSE!”
[singing] ~”Ain’t that a kick in the head?~ Deeny dings a line-drive laser to right field!”

yanks had 4 rookies in infield tonite, not taking away from their individual talents but they could have slowed game down when pitcher needed it, no one went to mound when pitching coach came out, didn’t talk through signs with man on second or playing the infield in. It is September boys, no more fooling around cutch to right, walker to first adeiny to shore up
defense till didi is back we are very injured but if you play the game right you will beat the tigers of the world
acarneglia
Torreyes is not a rookie

think you get my point

Didi is slated to be back Monday.

I’m curious why the pirates even traded for him in the first place
Goku the Knowledgable One
Im still wondering why they traded Cole for 3 proven busts, and then sold house for Archer who is terrible.
jdgoat
“3 proven busts”
They got years of control over two solid players in Moran and Musgrove. I hardly see how they can be considered busts.
panj341
Agree that Musgrove looks to be a solid player but Moran is below average player for his position since no power, strictly a singles hitter..He will be gone in 2 years when Hayes arrives. I think they only wanted him to fill a hole due to Kang situation. They should have demanded much more for Cole.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
They asked for Gleyber Torres and then Miguel Andujar.
They asked for Kyle Tucker and Forrest Whitley.
They got told to take a long walk off a short pier.
People need to remember which version of Gerrit Cole they were trading. They were trading the Cole who had just sulked his way to consecutive 4+ ERA seasons giving up a truckload of homers.
Joe Musgrove (alone) has been much better than that Cole.
rocky7
Years of control is one of the most overrated aspects of trade evaluations today. If the player received isn’t what you had hoped for now at least you think positively because you can pay him for years to come?
And what exactly does “solid” mean when describing Musgrove….he’s average at best but at least he doesn’t suck?
Mendoza Line 215
I agree that years of control is overrated. That was the selling point on Archer. If the player is mediocre, the too many of them produces a mediocre team for many years.
Cole had a couple of mediocre years, but was still a first rate talent. They should have received McHugh instead of Feiz, and the trade would have been good for both teams.
Feliz is a bust,Moran mediocre, and Martin has some potential.Musgrove has actually done a good job this year,is a very fine competitor, and actually a good athlete as he can hit fairly well and can run the beases.
Bosin Rag
Bollinger was in pitching in Australia around this time last year. Good to see he’s made it back!
migg
Germany actually, that’s why I keep an eye on him. He set new K-records here.
I think he was in Australia before, though
ajetergiftbasket
Yawn.
yaketymac
He’s not even worthy of a nickname!
waldfee
All this for one wild card game.
Adam6710
You make it sound ridiculous. If there’s any one game to make moves for it’s the Wild Card Game. Your whole season hinges on ONE game, Cashman is doing whatever he can to ensure he can win it, hence a late inning defensive replacement type as insurance against injury.
eileenyankees9
Adam. lol, of course you are so right with this reply, sometimes they don’t get it and come out with unbelievable statements.
Enjoy the WC. I sure will
walls17
Defensive sub. Not taking anyone’s roster spot with expanded rosters. It’s either replace Andujar at third late in games with Neil walker (who’s not a third basemen) or nothing. Good pickup
66TheNumberOfTheBest
The original plan was most likely to keep Hechevarria and trade Mercer and/or Harrison but both got hurt.
I wouldn’t mind signing AH as a FA to be the backup MI next year.
stymeedone
I guessing he would mind it. Doubt someone as good as him defensively at SS is planning on being a Utility next year. Still, I see a 1 year plus option as max offer, as every team hopes for some offense.
Mendoza Line 215
I do not think that they ever got any offers for either Mercer or Harrison.JM is seen as having no range, and JHay as making too much money with no on base skills.
I think that AH should definitely be considered as backup next year but at nowhere near his current $5.9 M salary,
philsphan1979
Looks like the Yankees are getting desperate at this point lol
HarveyD82
i had a thought about yankees and then it hit me. they make a trade with the buccos (infielders) and they make it to the WS. i looked it up and here it is….
charlie hayes …
luis sojo…
enrique wilson..
erik hinske…
now adeiny. youre welcome yankees … lol
oneiblnd
My guess is with the moves the Yanks have made at the major level they need to back fill at the SS position in the minors.
Begamin
The minors seasons are ending and the rosters are expanding. Hech is there for extra depth. Whether it is to be a defensive sub or give someone rest
