The Tigers will purchase the contract of righty Jacob Turner, Evan Woodberry of MLive.com tweets. He’s expected to start tomorrow in place of the just-traded Mike Fiers.
Turner, 27, has seen action in parts of seven seasons. But his career hasn’t gone as hoped when he debuted in Detroit at just twenty years of age. The former first-rounder has spent time with four other organizations since that time and owns only a 5.26 ERA over 368 career innings.
Most recently, Turner was knocked around in four outings with the Marlins earlier this season. The Tigers nabbed him on a minors deal and sent him to Triple-A Toledo. Turner has been effective there thus far, carrying a 4.01 ERA with 6.3 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 58 1/3 frames over 11 starts.
what has detroit become
They’re trying to secure a higher draft pick?
i’m not doubting that. but looking at all the players that have been traded out of detroit is just insane. so much talent.
What’s worse is they refuse to promote anyone with an MLB future
It’s not like they had much choice. They were over the cap. They didn’t have room to pay the players and their contracts were ending. They couldn’t even recoup a decent draft pick with a qualifying offer (JDM would have only netted a 4th round pick).
There is no cap tho…
How does this guy keep hanging on? There must be at least 6 teams that have cut him. He’s terrible, but we are talking about Detroit.
Marty, did the DeLorean just hit 88 mph?
That’s heavy
Weight has nothing to do with it.
Someone needs to realize that this guy is not a starter. Put him in relief and maybe he experiences a career resurrection just like another failed Tigers first round starter, Andrew Miller. Miller flopped several years and several organizations as a starter before Boston moved him to the pen at age 27. The rest is history. It might not work the same for Turner, but it’s worth a shot.
Same for the Orioles Zach Britton. Way better reliever than starter
He has pitched out of the pen and still sucks.
All of the games best relief pitchers are failed starters.
Miller, Chapman, Hader, Iglesias, Hand, Davis, Britton, Bradley, Morrow etc.
No they’re not. There are exceptions – Kimbrel, Jansen..
Well Jansen was a failed catcher though. But it’s not a new phenomenon either. Trevor Hoffman was a failed shortstop. Even Mariano Rivera began as a starter and flopped. Kimbrel is about the only one that has always been a reliever.
Jansen used to catch for Kershaw in the minors
Houston Street was a closer in college…that’s the exception.
Sounds like a Friedman move, did TIgers confer with the media – appointed genius?
not that difficult to see the tiges are looking to burn innings on the cheap and see if any cream rises to the top? what’s the big deal? giving major league arms a chance is what you’re supposed to do when rebuilding right?
Personally, I love seeing him in a Tigers uniform again because they chose him over plenty of really good guys so maybe he finds a little magic at Comerica Park & resurrects his pitiful career.
Isn’t this the guy who demanded to be an August call-up before he’d sign with Detroit? Should be ready by now.
Yeah I think he was one of the last guys to sign a major league deal after he got drafted before they changed the rule about it
This may be the Tigers biggest story this season.
