The Tigers have acquired right-hander Nick Tepesch from the Blue Jays for cash considerations, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports on Twitter. Tepesch will head to Double-A Erie with his new organization, Woodbery adds.
Tepesch, now 29, is best known for his run with the Rangers from 2013-14. He turned in 42 appearances (39 starts) and 219 innings of 4.56 ERA/4.66 FIP pitching in that span, notching a career-best 126 frames in 2014. Tepesch walked just 2.92 hitters per nine in his Texas tenure, but he only managed a 5.42 K/9 along the way, thus limiting his effectiveness.
Since his time with the Rangers ended in 2016, Tepesch has been a member of a few other organizations, but he hasn’t seen significant big league action over the past couple years. Tepesch has spent this year exclusively in the minors, combining for 89 1/3 innings with the Blue Jays’ Double-A and Triple-A affiliates. He struggled at both levels with Toronto, especially as a member of its Triple-A team in Buffalo, where he put up a lofty 7.90 ERA with 4.39 K/9 and 2.85 BB/9 in 41 frames.

Why?
tigerfan4ever
Because they can.

Veteran depth will help. Low risk deal. Any positive outings is a bonus

I am digging AA…load up on pitching……there will be a lot of cream rising in the future.

Tepesch has pitched exactly as many innings in a season as Lance McCullers has

must be voodoo
jimmertee
Through the MLB level lens, Tepesch is awful. This is strictly a minor league depth move and means nothing in the long run.

Probably Top 5 best moves Atkins has made so far in his short tenure.

This is a mystery decision. He’s worse than Mike Pelfrey

Nobody is worse than Mike Pelfrey.

This is a move to just have pitchers to finish out this season….tigers will be moving lariano soon and are desperate for anyone that can pitch….fullmer probably wont pitch anymore…so your rotation could have to finish the season out with boyd zimm hardy and then who knows…tigers are a joke…. no hitters in the minors and pitchers that wont be ready til 2020….this is a rebuild year and we bring up gerber what a joke…there is nothing to get exited about til maybe late next year when we may see a couple young pitchers come up….check back in 2022 to see if we are even a .500 team by then….plus chis ilitch is a total jerk and cheap…
tigerfan4ever
Who are Lariano and Fullmer and how do you get exited? Maybe you’ll learn how to spell before the Tigers are good again but somehow I doubt it. LOL

Thank you for telling me what’s up. I honestly couldn’t figure this out.
tigersfan1320
They have multiple young hitting prospects, their middle infield talent seems loaded, and if jacoby Jones can figure it out, somehow, and with castellanos being the anchor in right field, the tigers could definitely be a .500 team by 2019, possibly even contending, if not that year then probably the next when Faedo, burrows, funkhowser, Perez, and Mize are all up performing to their potential
tigerfan4ever
A perfect storm would have to happen for the Tigers to be a .500 team, let alone contend. My guess is they get to that level in 2021. This team reminds me a lot of 2003, the difference being they’re not going to lose 119 games.

Funny thing is, Detroit getting to .500 with Miggy at DH isn’t all that far-fetched considering the division they play in. If the White Sox can’t take a step forward and Cleveland takes a step back, it’s not out of the question.
I can’t believe I’m justifying the Tigers being a .500 team next year (possibly).
tigerfan4ever
Miggy is far from a guarantee in 2019 to be healthy. He and Nick (if he’s still in Detroit) cannot carry the team. The pitching staff will likely be thin still. I just can’t foresee them being anywhere close to .500 in 2019 (or even 2010).

6.45 ERA splitting AA and AAA. Tigers can have that “depth” and “low risk” option.
GarryHarris
Al Avila has been doing OK until this one. Someone in the organization sees something.

Rick Anderson loves pitch to contact guys. Hey…no walks and no strikeouts mean his 5 run innings take less time to complete.
GarryHarris
I pitch to contact type pitcher needs a good defense backing him up. I don’t know where the Tigers sit in that respect.
Jacob Sizemore
Not good. Other than Iggy and Jacoby Jones defense is a weak spot for us…
Legacy of Bo
There is a move coming with Liriano, so Tepesch is nothing more than warm body insurance.
