Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto suggested last month he’d be open to discussing a contract extension with the club, but if he’s uninterested in signing a deal over the winter, “there’s a good chance” the team will trade him, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald writes. The 25-year-old Realmuto, one of the game’s elite backstops, is controllable via arbitration through the 2020 season.
More from the National League…
- The Mets are considering Blue Jays assistant GM Tony LaCava and Rays special assistant Bobby Heck as candidates to be their next general manager, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. Neither man has been a GM before, though both LaCava and Heck have a wealth of front office experience, particularly in the areas of scouting and player development. LaCava has been with the Blue Jays since 2002, when J.P. Ricciardi (now a Mets special advisor) was Toronto’s GM. Heck has been with the Rays since 2012, following lengthy stints with the Astros and Brewers that saw him play a notable role as both those clubs amassed a strong collection of young talent.
- Brewers right-hander Zach Davies hasn’t pitched in the majors since May 29, owing to shoulder and back problems, and there’s still no timetable for his return, per Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. But Davies’ absence hasn’t been crippling for the Brewers, as Haudricourt writes that they’ve “been satisfied” with the current members of their rotation. Further, after serving as a solid starter from 2016-17 (his first two full seasons), Davies came out of the gates slowly this year with a 5.23 ERA/5.29 FIP in 43 innings.
- The Dodgers’ decision to move Kenta Maeda to the bullpen may negatively affect the righty from a financial standpoint, given that he has incentives in his contract based on games started and innings pitched. However, the Dodgers and Maeda’s reps at the Wasserman Agency “have a good relationship,” tweets the Los Angeles Times’ Andy McCullough, who notes it would be sensible for both sides to change the language in his deal to include incentives for relief appearances. If the two sides do attempt to work something out, the MLBPA would have to sign off on it.

Realmuto’s 27 – otherwise solid notes

Glad you approve despite the mistake
bradthebluefish
Realmuto, come to a contender!
Kenleyfornia74
Its not a finacial chess game by the Dodgers. They legitimately need Maeda in the pen to help the push for the playoffs. Hopfully he will not be too mad about it
Balk
It’s a financial chess game for Maeda, who I think is a better bet then ryu or whatever his name is!
Psychguy
Maeda and Stripling back to pen to cover up Friedman’s idiocy. Friedman likes to make the big splash with Machado, but there need since Morrow left was a quality replacement to Jansen. A three year old could discern that.
darkangel
playoff push? uh maybe at best.

Shots fired!!!! Go get him lady!!

Dodgers had three relievers on the DL all working back at the time of the deadline, relief pitching wasn’t as much of a need organizationally as it might appear. Not only was Machado a great player available at a position of need, he didn’t cost that much and created greater line up flexibility. I’m pretty sure Andrew Friedman is more adept at defining the needs of this ball club than you are from your couch.
Psychguy
Apparently not. Friedman went into the season failing to obtain a quality replacement for Morrow. As injuries, lack of effectiveness mounted he focused on Machado a luxury addition in relation to the urgency of the pen. His response, Axford? He had and has the prospects and resources to make a deal but did not. He could have had the opportunity to acquire a quality reliever before the deadline but preferred to stand pat. Yep LA is struggling to make the playoffs, but damn if we don’t have some mighty nice prospects still in the fold.
Kenleyfornia74
If Axford does what he did today throwing 97-99 mph darts he was an excellent acquisition.
Psychguy
He was a quality reliever how long ago and since then? Why does LA a team with prospect and lots of cash go dumpster diving for a reliever?
BlueSkyLA
Indeed, but you’ll find that questioning a move made by Friedman and his geek squad is simply not allowed. Nothing is ever their fault. If they fill up the bullpen with castoffs from other teams and it doesn’t work out, it still isn’t their responsibility. The total blame goes to Dave Roberts, for issuing them uniforms, I guess.
Kenleyfornia74
Like who? Rasiel Iglesias is the only bullpen guy worth trading top prospects for and his asking price is through the roof
BlueSkyLA
You are phrasing this as a rhetorical question. If instead you ask about the relievers available in trade who would have amounted to an upgrade over what they have now, the names include Kela and Brach, and that’s just the start of the list of the bullpen pieces who moved in July and since that the Dodgers did not get. None went for sky high prices.
Kenleyfornia74
Brad brach is just ad underwhelming as anyone they currently have. He would change nothing. Pirates traded Taylor Hearn a top 10 org prospect for Kela. There is no one in the dodgers top 10 that would be worth trading for kela
BlueSkyLA
Honestly, I don’t understand what you are arguing.
First, consider who the new player would replace. You don’t think Kela or Brach would be better than at least four current members of this bullpen? If not then that’s just a head-scratcher since it seems blindingly obvious to me. And again, this is just two names of about ten who were traded at the deadline and since, all of whom would be an improvement over Rosscup or Chargois. Can’t we at least agree that both are completely awful?
The second part is, just because the Pirates had to give up a top-10 prospect for Kela doesn’t mean the Dodgers would. The Dodgers have a much sounder farm system than the Pirates. Hearn isn’t even among the top 100 prospects in baseball.
Do I also need to remind you that the Dodgers scouted Kela heavily and were thought to be in the lead for him at one point. So its seems they thought he’d move the needle. He posts very good results and also came with four more years of team control. So yeah, he’d be worth giving up something, and he would have made a big difference right away, because they would have sent Baez, Rosscup, or Chargois packing.
Or maybe we need to see more than four bullpen loses in six games for you to be convinced. If that doesn’t do it then don’t know what it will take.
Kenleyfornia74
Familia or Britton would have been nice but theres no way in this galaxy they would go over the tax just to get 1 bullpen arm (which both those guys would have done). The Indians paid a massive price for Hand so that was never going to happen
BlueSkyLA
Well of course they aren’t going over $197M in payroll, I’ve been saying since May at least that this will never be a complete team as a result. This constraint also pointed to the value of Kela, who doesn’t even go to arbitration until next year.
Modified_6
Haaaa. It’s pretty sad that with 197 million they can’t be complete.
That’s the beauty of teams like the Rays, the A’s, Pirates etc. when those teams do it for less than half and beat up on teams like LA, Chicago, BoSox,SF, Washington, and of course NY it’s just cool to see.
sluman46953
just heard the mets will hire fred wilpon as general manager and fred wilpon as director of player personnel
sluman46953
also jeff wilpon director of scouting

why are the mets in the news?
why do they continue to want to stay in the news?
this is unbelievable! it is august and
they are doing a gm search through the media to
gauge fan reaction! they should be trying to stay off
the back page and talk radio! nothing good
can come from it! this is media 101!
they need to get their house
in order or get out of baseball!!!!!!!
as the saying goes: “lead, follow or get
out of the way”
it is time to get out of the way!

Yeah it’s time for MLB to step in
its_happening
And do what exactly? MLB stepping in is the last thing baseball needs. Want real change? Starts with Mets fans. They have the power.
dugmet
gauging fan reaction? no. too funny.

Brewers offense is stacked now, not going to get outscored often. Not sure how the rest of the NL can even compete with them.
padam
So stacked that 9 NL teams are ahead of them in runs scored. Including everyone in their own division.

Buuuuuurn

they out hit the braves 19-9 and still lost. I wonder how often that happens

ROFL! Good point!

Realmuto to Oakland in the off-season. U heard it hear first.

Pretty sure it’s been suggested before

Nah….to the Red Sox for Blake Swihart……only if the Fish put in some International Bonus Money…….
Mjm117
As long as the Fish take on Rusney Castillo’s contract then it would be fair that the Fish send all their International Bonus Money in addition to their comp balance picks for the next 5 years.
lesterdnightfly
Look like the Mets are pursuing the “What the Heck” plan for success……
hojostache
It’s been a yearly tradition to keep trying to do the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Rely on internal options for pitching, signing players in the Scratch & Dent section of free agency, and mismanaging player health like they get bonuses to keep guys out of the starting lineup. They are truly a dumpster fire organization. I am a diehard Mets fan, but this post-Madoff small market approach to baseball is pathetic.
ray_derek
Did Schoop get a hit yet?
ray_derek
The Brewers pitching is so bad they traded for a 3B
simschifan
Refresh my memory aren’t you a Cards fan?
ray_derek
Brewers fan actually, can’t believe the stupid trade we made. How can they have such a great offseason, then panic in July and make horrible trades
ray_derek
J/k Cubs fan who hates anything and everything to do with the Brewers. Bud Selig is the worst commissioner. I’d rather see STL win 10 WS titles than Milwaukee ever making the playoffs. They are a joke of a franchise and should go back to the AL where they belong.

So much ROFL!!! There are some great wise cracks on this thread.

Mets would be way ahead of the curve if they hired Tony LaCava from the Jays. He’s a real baseball guy.
hojostache
Unfortunately Fred (Wilpon) isn’t a fan of fancy numbers and statistics. He is know to prefer “old school” guys…ya know….old and out-dated. Most importantly they have to allow Jeffy (Wilpon) to pretend to be a baseball guy and as a result make horrible decisions for the front office. He has pretty much cornered the market on arrogance and ineffectiveness.
cleonswoboda
the Mets already have a really good GM on their payroll,he coaches first base for them.
RunDMC
The ole’ bait-and-switch. Even if he is extended, he’d still be traded. MIA traditionally does not offer no-trade clauses, so unless he has one installed into the extension (doubtful) – they’d look to flip him for an even better deal.
kla0812
Brewers have been satisfied so far with their starting pitching…… yeah ok, how are they satisfied with it? Their starters are lucky to get to the 5th and now the stellar bullpen they have is getting overworked. Should have traded for a couple top end starters instead of 3B or 2B. Wasted prospects and a chance to go deep into the playoffs. But now at least they have a great bar league softball team.
