Reed has had a poor year and does not merit being in the closer’s role.. Just blew Thursday’s game. Hildenberger has been knocked around lately – possibly being misused – should ONLY be facing RH bats with his RH Sidearm delivery. Should either be May or one of the kids at AAA. Let them get some experience. September callups are only 2 weeks away.

The Pirates need to stop outsmarting themselves. Seriously…
They and their sports science department are so proud of their rest schedules and data, etc. but they have already cost themselves one win and now maybe two, all because they (to borrow from Mike Tomlin) “live in their fears” regarding Coors Field.
The team and it’s starters are rolling, so what do they do? Call up Clay Holmes to make a PREPLANNED spot start for absolutely no real reason. They anticipated their pitchers being taxed by the 3 game series in Denver and planned for Holmes to clean up the mess.
Which sounds like a good plan, except that Taillon pitched a complete game, Musgrove went 7 and their bullpen is not depleted, on the contrary, they are getting rusty.
So why is Holmes STILL making the spot start?
This comes a week after they pitched a warm body AAA pitcher in the 5th inning of a TIED game vs the Cards…which they lost. Again, because they were afraid of Coors.
They need to stop getting ahead of themselves, stop out thinking themselves and start worrying about the game in front of them only.
