Here’s the latest key injury news from around Major League Baseball:
- Astros second baseman and reigning American League MVP Jose Altuve will play a rehab game at the Triple-A level on Sunday, and it’s possible he’ll be back in the majors Monday, per Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle. Right knee soreness has kept Altuve out of action since July 25, and the Astros have gone just 7-12 without him and fallen out of sole possession of first place in the AL West. They lost to the Athletics on Saturday, putting the two teams in a first-place tie atop the division.
- There is a chance that starter Stephen Strasburg and reliever Kelvin Herrera will rejoin the Nationals during their next series against the division-rival Phillies, which begins Aug. 21, Mark Zuckerman of MASNsports.com writes. Strasburg has been out since July 20 with a pinched nerve in his neck, while Herrera hasn’t pitched since Aug. 7 because of a right rotator cuff impingement. Starter Jeremy Hellickson and reliever Ryan Madson have joined those two on the DL this week, making it all the more important for the disappointing Nats to get back both Strasburg and Herrera as they try to make up a seven-game deficit in the National League East.
- Red Sox knuckleballer Steven Wright, out since June 26 with left knee inflammation, is closing in on a rehab assignment, manager Alex Cora told Christopher Smith of MassLive.com and other reporters. Wright will work out of Boston’s bullpen when he does return, Cora added. The 33-year-old Wright has served as a reliever in six of 10 appearances this season and registered a 3.38 ERA/4.49 FIP with 6.98 K/9, 4.5 BB/9 and a 53.2 percent groundball rate in 40 innings.
- While Brewers GM David Stearns and manager Craig Counsell indicated Wednesday that Jimmy Nelson probably won’t pitch this year, the righty said Saturday that he still hopes to return in 2018 (via Adam McCalvy of MLB.com). “I’m still doing everything in my power,” said Nelson, who hasn’t taken a major league mound since Sept. 8, 2017, because of shoulder problems. Nelson’s absence has robbed the Brewers of someone who was seemingly turning into a front-line starter before he went down, but they’ve still managed a 68-56 record and a half-game lead on a wild-card spot without him this season.

Maybe Nelson could play SS for Milwaukee

Is Ray Derek this site’s biggest troll??

Themed is equally as bad

Idk bud, that would actually be quite the accomplishment, especially considering the growing horde of trolls that regularly comment here..

Maybe, but I love it. (At least for August only)

You forgot bigpapi4ever, FriendOfBoras, Casey’s Partner, cubsfan2489, Ookashfa and that guy who always used to suggest like 4-team 30-player trades on every article.

Wright is much needed depth right now, hopefully this means Erod can focus on the pen and be the weapon they need come Oct. Have not heard much if he will buy into that role like Price last year.
dave13
This article says Wright will work out of the pen in his return so explain to me how a SP (Wright) returning from injury who will go to the bullpen hopefully means another SP (Erod) can focus on the bullpen when they need SP, they have Sale (currently on the DL), Price, Porcello. Pomeranz is lost should go to BP and probably won’t make the playoff roster. But yeah let’s hope an 11-3 starter with a 3.44 era focuses on the BP.
Especially after the Team, Alex Cora and Erod himself have all come out and said he is returning as a starter…
Nice try

Wright will likely work out of the pen because it involves a shorter rehab. If healthy, he also should be insurance as a starter if Eovaldi falters or there are injuries in the rotation come October.

Lol thanks.

Cora has said ERod is going back to the rotation. If Sale stays on the DL into Sept, Erod into the rotation is a no brainer
bradthebluefish
Throw Jimmy Nelson on the mound and let’s see what happens. So much inflammation that he can’t even pitch as a reliever every couple of days?
layventsky
He’s recovering from shoulder surgery. It would be too risky.

You’ve obviously never had labrum surgery.

…Now, I’m not entirely sure of the actual numbers, but good lord it seems like MLB, as a whole, has had to deal with quite a few more injuries this year..
It seems like every single team in baseball has had to deal with significant injuries to at least 5-7 prominent players on their squad.
Although, even with that being the case, I really don’t think it has negatively impacted the quality of baseball we’ve seen on the field this year, but it has certainly been a major buzz kill for every team’s fanbase.
I actually think the quality of MLB has been better all-around this year, and I’m almost 90% sure the ratings, merchandise sales, ticket sales, and just overall revenue numbers would back that up..
The competition, and races for a playoff spot, especially in the NL has been a ton of fun to watch and follow…Also, having teams seemingly come out of nowhere to be highly competitive this year has tremendously helped..
I strongly believe the most attractive aspect of this season is getting to see ALL the substantial amount of young and budding superstars all over both leagues. This year we have seen such promising talents take off and get their young careers moving forward, this includes such budding quality and superstar players like: S. Ohtani, Ronald Acuña Jr., Juan Soto, G.Torres, Josh Hader, Trivino, Biddle, Velazquez, Minter, Devers, Benintendi, Mookie, Albies, Soroka, Aguilar, Hoskins, Bieber, Newcomb, Buehler, Toussaint, Gurriel Jr., Andujar, Flaherty, Weaver, D.Rodriguez, S.Dominguez, Mironta, Arano, and even younger MiL rookies like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Eloy Jimenez it has been incredibly exciting watching then breeze their way through the minor league ranks..
Baseball’S future is in some excellent hands, and the future is now!!

Where exactly do you copy and paste your comments from, or do you actually take the time to type all this out??!!

Speech recognition? Maybe he’s richer thsn even the owners and rents out fingers? Seriously, the 10 day DL in my view has been abused which may partially explain things.
Marc (Phillies Phan)
I do not know what is sadder, the fact that he/she wrote all that or that I checked it for plagiarism. He/She took time to write it. No “hits”

Can anyone explain who makes the daily line-up for the Red Sox? Girardi on MLB suggested that it is based on numbers provided to Cora.
If Lindor bats first and Ramirez bats third and both are in contention for the MVP. Why does our stat staff think batting Betts (MVP candidate) first and JD (MVP candidate) 4th behind a player hitting nearly 100 points lower makes sense? I heard Cora say it is so he can have more runners on base but since he switched to 4th that hasn’t happened. Any baseball justification for this move? It’s reducing RBI opportunities for JD. I want to see him and Mookie finish 1/2 in the MVP voting. He leads in RBIs but he actually has lost opportunities since July 31 when someone implemented the change.

Ray Derek is the biggest troll. I think he’s actually the guy that Ryan Braun got fired from his job as the urine delivery guy back when he got busted for using P.E.D.’s. Obviously he’s still holding a grudge.
Bocephus
Why are you calling him out down here?
Yekatman
I think even urine delivery might be a bit too complicated for Ray Derek. . .

what’s happened to the Red Dox updates?
