Among many notes of interest in his deadline run-down (subscription link), Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic writes that the Indians made a run at Ian Kinsler before the Angels instead sent him to the Red Sox.
That move would have bumped incumbent second baseman Jason Kipnis into the outfield mix and perhaps precluded the Indians’ eventual acquisition of Leonys Martin. As things stand, the Cleveland organization still seems a plausible buyer of infield help on the August trade market (particularly considering Kipnis has hit a paltry .200/.217/.311 so far since the All-Star break), though they’re also likely to explore additional outfield upgrades as well.
With MVP candidate Jose Ramirez being a perfectly capable second baseman, the news that the Tribe pursued Kinsler implies that they might also be open to potential third base upgrades; the club was already known to be heavily in on Manny Machado before he was shipped to the Dodgers. That could include the likes of Josh Donaldson, should he return to health before the end of August. It’s worth noting that the Indians also have third baseman Yandy Diaz waiting in the minor-league wings, though his defense has a malignant impact on his value.
Then again, it could simply be that the Tribe saw Kinsler as a significant enough upgrade to pursue him ahead of most available outfield options. That being said, outside of Donaldson the outfield options who could potentially be had in August are far more interesting than any of the infield options who might clear waivers. Andrew McCutchen, Kole Calhoun and Avisail Garcia are some of the names who the Indians might be willing to pursue were they to stick with Kipnis at his natural position, though that’s simply my own speculation.

I doubt the Angels are going to deal Calhoun
ReverieDays
I doubt anyone would want him, he stinks.
andrewgauldin
Outside of this season, he’s been very consistent. He’s had a great month of June offensively, and has been playing stellar defense throughout the season. He has a long and cheap contract as well. Lots of team would like him on their team. For the angels to be exploring a trade of Calhoun, means Jo Adell or Brandon Marsh will probably be in the outfield mix next season. But I’d rather see Upton go.

Wow what a wonderful comment “He stinks”
Bart
Ignore him and remember his name. He is a troll.
Kyle Gipson
1.136 ops last month with gold glove caliber defensive. Quite honestly, he’s been one of the better outfielders in baseball since he came off the dl and changed his stance
DockEllisDee
he looks like he belongs on the professional softball homerun exhibition circuit, and for that reason I love him all the more.. anyone claiming he “stinks” clearly doesn’t know what the F they’re talking about, or as has been stated, is a troll
GeoKaplan
Correct.
Calhoun has been one of the preeminent defensive RF in MLB the past few seasons.
This year, he tweaked his swing and got mired in a horrible funk. A trip to the DL gave him the time to heal both body and swing, and his slash since returning has been .291/.359/.649 with 13 HR and 30 RBI in 35 starts/153 PA.
Small sample size, sure, but far from the paint-chip-fueled opinion that he “stinks”.

Even if his hitting was still below normal, his gold glove defense, baserunning, and personality would still be assets other teams would probably covet. Now that he is hitting again, he would probably be more enticing especially with his contract. I hope the Angels hold onto him unless they receive a good offer. Because of all those factors he wouldnt pass through waivers.
Indianfan
Worthless piece. Who really cares about what might have beens?
sportsfan101
Sounds like a butthurt fan who didn’t get the upgrade he wanted only for the upgrade to go to a better team in the same league!
Solaris601
Apparently the Tribe felt he was an upgrade over Kipnis.
dixoncayne
Yes, if nothing else we know how the front office feels about Kipnis
hswhitak
Lol, how bout everyone who has this app? It’s literally called MLB Trade Rumors. Spread your hate elsewhere, troll!
cxcx
Plenty of interesting infielders besides Donaldson could clear waivers, Frazier Castro Solarte Carpenter Gyorko Wong Harrison Freese Flores Forsythe Beckham Andrus Odor Beltre Walker Panik Longoria etc
SashaBanksFan
I bet valbuena would clear waivers…but no one would want him
cmancoley
Over half of those guys mentioned would not clear waivers

Yandy Diaz: “his defense has a malignant impact on his value.” LOL!
sufferforsnakes
Why does Yandy always get grief for his defense? He’s really not a terrible 3B, and his bat would definitely be an upgrade over Kipnis.
Mattimeo09
He probably gets grief because his defense is poor.
The real question is, if his defense is poor, why not switch him back to his natural position at 2B? Keep Ramirez at 3rd since he’s defensively solid anywhere.
sufferforsnakes
Have you actually done research on his defensive stats, or do you just base your opinion on what you’ve read other clueless people write?
Because if you dig deeper you’ll find he’s not a terrible 3B.
Polish Hammer
BTW, his natural position is not 2B, he’s played 5x as many games at 3B in his career as he has at 2B.
Polish Hammer
Even Francona commented on how poor he was out in the field, and Tito never makes any negative comments about anyone or anything.
Solaris601
Even if Diaz’ defense is shaky I think they’d be better off with him at 3B, moving Ramirez to 2B, and Kipnis to the bench. The fact that CLE was pursuing Kinsler is a testament to the organization’s lack of faith in Kipnis, and rightly so.
Houston We Have A Solution
Why didnt the tribe just trade for starlin castro then? Clearly an offensive upgrade over kipnis.
Pedro Cerrano's Voodoo
Awesome name btw.

I don’t think the Indians need another IF. I just can’t see Jason Kipnis being “mired in a season long slump” However, if he doesn’t break out, Erik Gonzalez is perfectly capable of taking over full-time. If anything, another Backup C to replace Roberto Perez would be a place to focus. He’s been near zero on offense.
Teator
It’s been a 2 year slump. Hes been bad since the World Series. As far as Gonzalez, do you really want to rely on him when you’re playing the Sox, Astros, or Yankees in the playoffs? Heck no. We have 2-3 years to compete at a championship level. Make the moves to get a team who can win it!
ac38
I personally wouldn’t want to see Perez replaced. While he doesn’t perform at the plate he is very good defensively and is Bauer’s personal catcher. If you replace him you risk losing Bauer and for what? A slightly better average from a catcher that only plays 2 times a week
Polish Hammer
I agree mostly, but this season he’s been horrible defensively, he not only hasn’t been throwing out runners he keeps dropping the ball on the exchange and doesn’t even get a throw off. I just don’t see a quality backup on the market that would be worth it. Plus it seemed like over the years Perez came up with clutch hits when they needed them.
