The latest from San Francisco…
- Jeff Samardzija will get a second opinion on his bothersome throwing shoulder, The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly reports (Twitter link). Samardzija has been out of action since mid-July with shoulder inflammation, and he most recently suffered a setback in his rehab process. Shoulder issues also required Samardzija to serve another DL stint earlier in the year, and given the lack of time remaining in the season, the Giants could very well decide to simply shut the right-hander down. The injuries have surely contributed to Samardzija’s poor numbers (6.25 ERA over 44 2/3 IP) in what has become a lost season for the veteran.
- There aren’t many past instances of a catcher undergoing hip labrum surgery, as Fangraphs’ Jay Jaffe explores, so the Giants can’t really be sure of what to expect from Buster Posey going forward after the longtime star returns from his imminent procedure. Undergoing this surgery could certainly help Posey regain some of his power, though since he’s entering his age-32 season, Posey might be due for something of a natural decline in any case. The Giants can’t explore a full-time move to first base for Posey due to Brandon Belt’s presence, and because Posey’s defense behind the plate is such a big plus for the team, Jaffe explains.
- The long-term answer for the Giants at catcher, of course, looks to be second overall pick Joey Bart. In a subscription-only piece for The Athletic, Baggarly looks at the prospect’s first pro season, which has already been an impactful one. Bart has already been promoted to low-A ball, and has a combined .306/.367/.589 slash line over 199 PA at the rookie league and low-A levels. It wouldn’t be a shock to see San Francisco aggressively promote Bart in 2019, given that Posey himself took a quick route to the majors (drafted fifth overall in 2008, made his big league debut in 2009). If Bart keeps up his progress, it will be interesting to see how the Giants manage the situation, given that Posey and Belt are both signed to big-money contracts through the 2021 campaign.

Joey Bart? Don’t they mean Paul Flart?
baseballpun
Blart?
bigdaddyt
Paul flart is a new ceweberity he’s a Paul blart look alike who has 6 months worth of farting videos of himself a work. Ends up getting fired because of it too
Cat Mando
We need a poll. Which is sadder?
A) This guy becomes pseudo-ceweberity for farting at work
B) He couldn’t even come up with an original name. Paul Flart is a Simpson’s character….. Paul Flart: Water Park Cop

I think Posey could handle the Managers job at a minimum!
tharrie0820
I think Posey could handle center. Right at an absolute minimum
al080991
I think Posey could handle SS. 2B at the absolute minimum
baseball1600
I think posey can handle being a starter, coming out of the bullpen at an absolute minimum.
tharrie0820
I started a thing, go me!
pinstripes17
I could see him getting shipped to Milwaukee to play SS.
baseball1600
As a giants fan, I have the right to say we are officially a mess. At least we won while our window was open though, many teams can’t say the same.

…..And your a Drama Queen

You’re* but nice try, practice makes perfect.
jekporkins
Wow. You managed four grammatical errors in a half-sentence. I didn’t think that could be possible. Golf clap for you.

This season has been done for a while, but I’m curious to see how they try to buy their way out of the hole they have dug themselves during the off season. Maybe they just say screw it and go for a 300MM payroll.
Dodgethis
Give the Giants some credit, they aren’t the Dodgers!
sfgfan101214
4-Sure!!!
At least the Giants have been to the Series FIVE times and won THREE in the last 30 years since the doggies won their last one only because
Oral-Sex He-Shiser had a lights out season and series!
pustule bosey
I still don’t see how this is a hole they dug themselves into, players age and the game fundamentally changed while they had guys on the books, some contracts are falling off now but nothing is irreparable, they have the ability to eat some, move what they need to and fill in holes. they may not be what the astros and cubs became after tanking but they probably won’t be at the bottom over the next couple of years and that could give time for guys to come up as long as they do OK developing and drafting in the next couple of years.
jekporkins
I agree completely. You don’t need to do a full tear-down and rebuild like some teams do. The Yankees let contracts fall off over time and traded some players, but never traded every contract and tossed craptastic players out there to fill the farm. Neither did the Dodgers. Let some of these contracts fade out while developing prospects.
azcrook
Posey was originally a shortstop
gilgunderson
And a closer!
WubbaLubbaDubDub
But you should see the way he runs the two minute drill under center as QB.
jorge78
No more long term contracts for pitchers. Unwise…..
agentx
Posey really ought to play 3B full time if/when he moves out from behind the plate.
pustule bosey
Longo is there for a while the easier route is probably belt to lf posey to first
tharrie0820
Left field at an absolute minimum
angels in Anaheim
Posey should play right field. That’s one of the needs for the Giants.
sidewinder11
More likely that Belt moves to the OF since he actually has some experience there.
sfgfan101214
Funny!!!

Baseball!
em650r
A real ball player should be able to play more then one position. Buster should try the infield 3rd, 2nd.
pustule bosey
yeah, maybe SP or the closer role too.
gilgunderson
He was the closer at Florida State, remember?
its_happening
Brandon Belt has a very good agent.

It’s nothing against Posey at all, but go over people with labrum surgeries and it’s problems. Range issues are the least of it. He’s a catcher, which isn’t something generally see with this issue and it might be double tough. Arthritic issues as well crop up early and he’s young where it could affect him, not old like 2 of the most known players in ARod and Lowell that were either far side of 35, or approaching it.
Maybe a future 1b now isn’t out of the question.
gilgunderson
Denard Span had labrum surgery before he joined the Giants. He had never reached double digits in HR in any season before that, but has reached that mark every season since. No, he’s not a catcher, that is true, but the procedure could certainly help Posey regain some of the lost pop in his bat.
Even with a diminished bat, Posey’s value is greater behind the plate.
ffjsisk
I’m not a Giants fan, but I am a Buster Posey fan and I hope he stays a Giant for life. He can probably catch a few more years, but they didn’t draft Bart to change his position. Posey could/should move to first in the next year or two if this kid develops like they think he will. Belt could be traded for pitching. I think the Giants sign Bryce Harper this offseason and try and rebuild on the fly.
birdsonbat
You think the giants get harper? No chance, unless they overpay dramatically.
tharrie0820
Whoever gets Harper will be drastically overpaying. dude is inconsistent as all hell
ffjsisk
So the Giants, one of the most successful franchises this century, with some of the deepest pockets in mlb, can only sign a guy if they drastically overpay? Let me say again, I’m not a Giants fan, but that comment is super dumb. They’ll pay him what the market dictates. San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities in America, with a great baseball history and sold out stadium every night. It shouldn’t take an overpay to get anyone there.
sleepyfloyd
Doesn’t always play out that way. There is the high tax in California that turns players off and the fact that it’s hard to be a well known national celebrity playing your games so late on tv. One of the main reason Trout is not more widely known.
brewmaster84
The Giants should move Posey to 1B and Trade Belt or move him to LF. Speed up the process with Bart to C. Keep Hundley at C until Bart is ready. And stop getting has been guys and over paying them like they have been doing recent years. The Giants keep putting themselves in this salary restriction with mediocre play and no depth.
brewmaster84
Or just trade Posey and keep Belt at first.
sleepyfloyd
That’s stupid, Posey is not going anywhere. Belt is going to get traded.
merizobeach
Belt is a very good defensive 1B but average at best in LF. Posey is an excellent catcher, but only an average defender at 1B. Moving them out of position makes the team less likely to win.
Jeffbroker
It’s settled then, Posey goes to the Warriors, Hundley plays left field and Belt, well Belt just lives in a hospital the rest of his life and makes sure he doesn’t have a concussion. The times they are a changin.
