The Diamondbacks have designated infielder Deven Marrero for assignment, as MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert was among those to tweet after last night’s game.
Marrero had been working back from a stint on the disabled list. Clearly, the organization decided not to bring him back onto the active roster. Marrero is out of options, so this was the only other choice.
Soon to turn 28, Marrero was picked up from the Red Sox just before the start of the season. Valued highly for his glovework, the former first-rounder has never come around with the bat. In 85 plate appearances this year, he managed only a .167/.224/.205 slash line, leaving him with a 39 wRC+ in 343 trips to the MLB plate over the past four seasons.

He’ll find a spot on someone’s bench.

I’m thinking the St. Paul Saints

My guess is Boston will attempt to get him again(option Renda), and keep him on the roster til Kinsler or Swihart comes back.

Boston can use his glove.. He is never going to hit tho

Lets Designate Nunez and Activate Devers?

You’re kidding right?

I hope not. One of the most useless 1st round picks they have ever made. Was furious when they drafted him. Couldn’t hit in college and same in pro ball. Strikes out and defense isn’t really as good as people claim it is.

Agree about the batting … but to be fair he has a solid, above-average glove.

All the other teams that passed on him in the draft and allowed him to slide to Boston made the right call.

He swung at nearly everything

Devers is coming off the DL today so I doubt they’ll sign another IF

No chance the Sox want Marrero back unless they can sign him to a minors deal and send him to AAA. They’ll never agree to a MLB-level deal.
lovethatdirtyh20
Yup, no way they pay a 62% tariff for Marrero on a big league deal.
deweybelongsinthehall
Minor league deal wherever he ends up unless an injury opens up a spot. Could stay in AZ.

skb I believe that ship has sailed for the Sox. Renda won’t see much time, Devers is back Wednesday, Only chance it happens is another injury to an infielder but who knows?
DarkSide830
About time. That might’ve been the biggest waste of a roster spot in baseball.

Nah, Victor Reyes is

Red Sox will sign him Thursday by 1:00pm.

The Padres will snag him on waivers. They have the first pick on waivers and have a veteran SS on an expiring contract. Claim Marrero, trade Galvis through waivers to a contender that needs an elite up the middle glove.
Marrero is controllable until 2023, gives the Padres at least someone other than Dusty Coleman or Javy Guerra who can play SS until Tatis is ready.
If Hechavarria had trade interest, so will Galvis. The glove is just as good but the bat is better and he hits from both sides of the plate.
