The Cardinals have placed infielder Jedd Gyorko on the 10-day disabled list, per a club announcement. Fellow infielder Adolis Garcia has come up from Triple-A in his place. Gyorko has been dealing with a left groin strain. While there had been some hope he’d avoid a 10-day minimum stint on the shelf, he’ll instead join fellow infielder Kolten Wong.
On the positive side, the St. Louis organization has several fill-in options with at least some prior MLB experience. Greg Garcia, Yairo Munoz, Patrick Wisdom, and Garcia will all presumably see time as the Cards patch things together.
That being said, the Cardinals are at a point in the season where every win is precious. The club has sprinted into Wild Card position, but is still trying to fend off a number of challengers while also hoping to track down the NL Central-leading Cubs.
The expectation seems to be that both Gyorko and Wong will return in relatively short order. Still, there’s always the potential for aggravation of a muscle injury, and there’s an argument to be made that the club ought to look into opportunities to improve regardless.
A move to add an infielder is far from a sure thing, but there are some options that could be worth considering. Several quality veterans have already reportedly cleared trade waivers. Others could also be considered potential trade candidates, potentially including Josh Donaldson, a player the Cards have targeted previously and who is going through the waiver process as we speak.

Adolis is an OF, his brother is the infielder.
nastynateSTL
Cooooome on man. I wish Adolis could play second
mateodh
Anybody can play second.
Stac22
Could Jose Iglesias or Logan Forsythe be an option? Josh Donaldson doesn’t seem to be healthy enough.
EndinStealth
Either of those could be an option. I honestly dont expect a move. I imagine they sit still and just wait for the guys to heal.
spudchukar
Yeah, bringing up Garcia hints that Martinez, then Adams late in games at first, with Wisdom as another option at first, and Garcia as the late inning guy in RF.
baseballpun
It just depends on how worried they are about defense. Ozuna is back Saturday, so you could shift Carp to 3rd and play Adams/Martinez at first until Jedd is back. I don’t think they need to go out and get someone to cover three games against the Pirates and Reds.
Triteon
No trades, no free agents — this is why there’s a bench. Munoz can handle it for a week or so; he wan’t pretty at SS with DeJong down, but he’s passable at 3rd for the short term. Or yes — Carp to 3rd and platoon Martinez and Adams at 1st as baseballpun mentioned.
dazhk
Give Wisdom a chance. He’s more than earned it.
c1234
Yeah but the Cardinals are in a race weak fill ins like Adams or Martinez makes the cardinals worse with their offense I say get Donaldson so Carp stays at 1st so now the defense and offense improves immensely
STLCards33
That’s an overreaction and stupid
Triteon
c1234: Yeah…”weak”. I’ll take that platoon.
3rdStrikeLooking
Some people cannot be reasoned with. C1234….special school? Very possible.

Donaldson isn’t coming to STL this late. I dont think he will pass over teams like LA that are still buyers. Plus his injury problems would hinder the Cards. Wait until FA if it is meant to be he will come.
tomabsolon
Couldn’t hurt at this point and if Donaldson doesn’t work you send him packing. We need veteran help now anyway.
STLCards33
I’m good
Triteon
I have nothing against Wisdom. It’s just that Munoz carried a lot of SS earlier this year and I think he’s earned the shot. Munoz falls and Wisdom picks it up. Plenty of options internally is all I’m really saying.
c1234
Go get Donaldson and hope he’s around star form
Polymath
To get Donaldson would require something approximating a late first round draft pick plus maybe a fifth round pick. That’s a lot for someone that is still injured.

What’s amazing to me is that with wisdom and Garcia being called up to replace Wong and gyorko, the cardinals current active roster is 40% rookies! the future is definitely bright in St. Louis. I think the cardinals are lucky to have these injuries during a stretch that includes the pirates and reds. Would like to see them go after a Logan’s Forsythe type player out there. But, if they don’t make a move, they should make it just fine without these injured guys. Ozuna comes back Saturday. Maybe we get lucky and donaldson falls into our lap through the waiver wire. Whatever the deal or no deal is, I’m just excited to watch these improved cards under shildt!
TheAdrianBeltre
Murphy would be nice to have about right now…
c1234
I don’t think they want to make baseballs worst defense even worst
Triteon
c1234: you’ve heard of baseball before today, right? Fielding percentage isn’t the only stat in defense.
c1234
It’s a big one though and errors are a big one because errors can cost a game if you pay attention.

Do not comment ever again. Please, for the love of all things baseball..
stan lee the manly
They aren’t baseballs worst defense anymore. Extremely far from it actually. People seem to forget that this isn’t the same team as Mathenys, Shildt has has a higher priority on defense with both his preparation and lineup construction and it has shown on the results.
matthew_lepp
Adolis is an outfielder, lol.
dmarcus15
patch together something until September callups and all will be good.
