The Athletics’ recent pitching injury woes continue, as the club announced today that lefty Brett Anderson has been placed on the 10-day disabled list with a forearm strain. He joins fellow southpaw starter Sean Manaea on the shelf at an inopportune moment.
Oakland has turned in a remarkable surge, in no small part due to the unexpected contributions of several veteran hurlers. Anderson has certainly been among them, turning in 65 innings of 4.02 ERA pitching over 13 starts while earning just $1.5MM on the year.
The outlook for the lefty isn’t clear, but it’s always worrisome to hear of forearm problems. Anderson’s health history certainly doesn’t leave much room for optimism, though his back — not his arm — has typically been the culprit.
For the time being, righty Ryan Dull will come up to take the open spot on the roster. But the Athletics now seem to have an innings gap that will somehow need to be filled. Daniel Mengden is perhaps the top internal option, with Frankie Monts and Chris Bassitt also representing 40-man possibilities, but there are still a few days left to look outside the organization.
Well…that took longer than I thought it would!
He’s shown what he can do when healthy, but never can stay that way. It’s a shame because he gets picked up every year by a team dreaming on his health, and every year seems to bring the inevitable injury.
He had a pretty good 100 innings for the A’s at the beginning of the decade. When he’s healthy he’s average (low strikeouts, batters hitting .270 against him). I never understood why some regarded him as much as they have in the past.
It’s wild he’s made $50 million to pitch in 153 MLB games in his career. $62,000 an inning. 3.76 career FIP, so those are probably quality innings, but damn that’s crazy to see.
I would love to see Manea just deal against NYY in the wild card game.
Is he gonna be healthy?
Manea has an appointment this afternoon in Los Angeles with one of the top Tommy John surgery doctors.
Tommy John of the shoulder? They should start a band; The Tommy Johns!
Be careful what you wish for! Take your pitchers out of that cavern you call a ballpark and they suddenly become pretty average at best…..good example is Sonny Gray who you all thought was the second coming of Cy Young at the trade deadline.
It will be the Yankees DEALING in the Bronx!
To be fair the Yankees pitching staff really tweaked his fastball usage, also Sanchez cant block a ball to save his life. Not the whole story with Sonny but definitely something that isn’t talked about enough.
lmao rocky7, why do you troll A’s threads on this site? You’re a Yankees fan, stay in your lane, sorry the A’s play in a big boys park and not some sandbox with a joke 200 foot wall in RF. Corny.
Lmao @ “big boys park” you mean the worst park in the MLB? All of the pitchers stats look very good on paper because of playing there, example see Gray, Sonny. Pitches fine on the road, but can’t handle the jungle of NYC where there is a winning culture and a real baseball stadium.
Gray made the postseason 2 out of 5 years in Oakland, genius.
The Yankees play in a park that has little league dimensions. That’s a fact everyone knows. Look at Judge’s H/R splits and get back to me, chief. Yankee Stadium is a joke. Oakland Coliseum was designed by Joe DiMaggio, so please stop talking.
Oakland Coliseum is a football stadium and a team as good as the A’s should have no business playing there, “chief”.
Yea that breathtaking stadium the A’s play in, especially when the sewer lines backup. Get back to us when the A’s move out of the ghetto.
Yeah…don’t you hate it when those clothing items and towels get flushed down the toilet?
Because your comments about the A’s making the playoffs are pointed to the Yankees.
Your football stadium masks your pitchong stats which look great at home vs the road.
You were one of the most vocal Sonny Gray fans last year at the trading deadline. He has been a total bust for the Yankees. He can’t pitch in big games, and stinks versus Boston.
1. No they arent, They are directed at Astros, Yankees and Mariners, the contending teams. This isnt anything to get mad about.
2. Your 200 foot wall in RF makes Judge looks like a superhero, but his road stats are absolutely terrible. Same diff.
3. Everyone on the planet loved Sonny Gray. He threw an amazing game 162 to send the A’s to the postseason, going 8 strong in Texas, a hitters paradise. His playoff games against Verlander were nothing short of sensational. You are literally blaming me for him stinking when he never stunk this bad at a certain park before. You understand I’m not controlling anything, right? My god, you are dumber than I could have ever imagined, please cease and desist responding to me and I’ll do the same, ugh. Go away.
JTO..You should really direct that frustration, and those vile comments toward the A’s ownership. Being a fan of the A’s has got to be like being the red headed step child, hand-me-down clothes, and the broken bicycles.
Good one man.
You’re dreaming with Sonny boy…
and our archaic part make your horse barn look like something that should have football played in it instead of baseball.
O.Co sucks but Yankee stadium isn’t a “real baseball stadium”. Pop ups should not turn into dingers in a ballpark
Boy that place the Blue Jays play at is certainly a “real baseball stadium”.
Judge’s splits are not egregious. Yes, he is better at home, but so are many players. Judge has played 78 regular season road games – esentially half a season – and he would project at 38 HR and 92 rbi with an OBP over .400.
Apparently, you don’t watch Judge play everyday, since most of his Hr’s would leave any stadium. Nice try, tho. Enjoy watching the Astros leave the A’s in the dust.
Ya, it’s a parallel concrete jungle. Convenient, but definitely a botttom tier stadium
Rocky, I don’t think you realize how a one game playoff works
He hasn’t been dealing since middle of last season. He’s been wily with good results despite lack of stuff, which is a testament to him as a pitcher. But his FB was like 97 at one point, no? Now it’s barely 90?
I recall him being able to reach back for 97 tops on a good day, once upon a time. Fangraphs (which I think uses PitchFX for historical data) pegged his highest season average for fastball velocity at 93.5mph (2013). This year he averages 91.3mph – so he’s lost two ticks.
Looking forward to next season, this team is built for the future.
How about Derek Holland and Andrew McCutchen for PTBNL?
Bumgarner for something nice.
I wish they would trade him and rebuild, but that doesn’t seem to be in the cards and for some dumb reason the Giants and A’s don’t make trades.
I kept saying if the A’s got deGrom, they’d take the AL. Still true. They have the prospects and pretty much no holes they can’t fill from within. They need ONE decent SP who has a history of being an ace.
Logic indicates they need more than 1 top of the line guy to compete in the postseason. Do the A’s really want to be using Edwin Jackson in that spot?
Well yeah, but that pen can cover a lot.
I’m guessing they just bullpen the entire playoffs, let the SPs give up 1 run maximum then just go full bullpen. A’s brass talked about this today.
Their bullpen is definitely beastly. If anyone can stretch out to cover innings from a starter not going deep, it’s them.
Jackson will have to be better than he’s ever been to compete in the post season, and I root for the guy as a person, but I just see L’s for the A’s if they have to use him.
This guy could end up on the DL after visiting the bathroom!! Complete waste of a roster spot year after year. But, hey, teams continue to pay him.
Anderson and Manea did his part. Go A’s!
The irony was always that he was one the of least athletic Athletics ever.
