The Braves have reportedly made an offer for Orioles superstar Manny Machado, but it doesn’t appear the shortstop will end up in Atlanta prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. The Braves “are strictly on the fringes” of the Machado sweepstakes, tweets ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick, who adds that they’re more concerned about upgrading their rotation.
More on the trade front…
- The Giants are willing to part with right-hander Jeff Samardzija, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports, adding that they specifically informed the Yankees he’s available. However, the Yankees aren’t sure if he’s the right fit for their stadium, per Nightengale. Sending Samardzija anywhere would be a tall task for San Francisco, as he’s due $19.8MM per year through 2020 and is in the midst of a rough season. The longtime workhorse, 33, has missed time with pectoral and shoulder problems, and when Samardzija has taken the mound, he has only managed a 6.42 ERA/5.47 FIP over 40 2/3 innings.
- More on the Yankees, whose starting third baseman, Miguel Andujar, has been in the rumor mill of late. The Rangers and “several” other teams have made more than one inquiry regarding Andujar in the past, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. And “multiple executives” informed Sherman that the Yankees are now trying to drive up Andujar’s value so they can sell high on the 23-year-old. General manager Brian Cashman shot that down, though, saying: “That is completely false. I think [Andujar] is a hell of a player. We have said ‘no’ to him [in trade talks] not just this year but from Double-A on up. I have not included him any deals and that should say how I feel about him.” Cashman goes on to defend Andujar’s questionable defense in Sherman’s piece and adds, “Where he was and where he is now, I feel vindicated not moving him.”
- With the Cardinals sitting at a mediocre 47-45, 6 1/2 games out in the NL Central, they’re not in position to make any bold rental pickups. Rather, any acquisition(s) would likely have to be capable of helping the Redbirds beyond this season, president John Mozeliak suggested to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com and other reporters Friday. “Ultimately we want to do what’s best for this organization, not just in the sense of a Band-Aid [but] long term,” Mozeliak said. “If we thought there was sort of that one magic bullet to change the trajectory of the season, we might chase that. If not, I think looking at it in a broad sense might make the most sense. The ebb and flow of the season, the ebb and flow of the next few weeks always [dictates] the types of deals you make.”
smelliott00
Cardinals need to sell. They are as lifeless as any team in the bigs right now and that starts with Mike Matheny. They are in desperate need of a shake up.
3rdStrikeLooking
Themed would disagree. Best run and best farm system in baseball and all teams envy.
murphy
Yet haven’t won anything in awhile.
seamaholic 2
The Cards have the beat farm system in baseball?
dave1775
Lol. Not
eatonculo
Cards have a “very good” farm system, with a lot of talent at the top and bottom, but it’s certainly not “the best.”
kiddhoff
I agree. They seem lifeless. But I think they still have a shot. Roll the dice and make a move or two. Trade Norris and let Holland do what he’s being paid to do. As silly as it may sound, Carlos Martinez needs to be shipped out. He is so inconsistent, I cant imagine why he was considered a cy young candidate at the beginning of the year.I dont think anyone else has any major trade value. Theyve been underperforming for 2 years. Frustrating.
fasbal1
Martinez would probably do very well elsewhere but I agree a trade of him makes much sense.
jlmini10
Yeah that lower 3 ERA, mid 3 FIP, over 180 innings, and 30 starts a year sure is inconsistent. Martinez should be one of the only untouchables on this entire Cardinal team. Then factor in he’s on a below market value extension and you’ve got a building block for a very promising rotation in the future.
kiddhoff
I’m not sure he’s a building block. I swear it seems he has given up as many walks as given strikeouts. I’m hoping the Yanks come calling for him
fasbal1
Looked good last night in 9..1 loss to the Reds.
c1234
No! Carlos is forever a Cardinal! Yankees should be done spoiling there fan base!
bighiggy
I’m a die hard cards fan, but I dont see them making the playoffs. I think selling would be wise. I think gyorko, Greg Garcia, j Martinez, Carson Kelly, brebbia all have value. They are also expendable with better players or almost similar players available in the minors. If they could get half of what they gave up for ozuna I’d trade him too. We got O’Neill, bader, mercado and obviously Fowler for next year. Cause nobodies taking Fowler. How about a Carson Kelly, Luke weaver, alex reyes( I know right), and a junior Fernandez for a degrom or Syndergaard trade? Maybe add another piece in there too to sweeten the deal for the mets?
EndinStealth
Youd have to do ALOT of sweetening to get the Mets interested in that deal.
c1234
Rebuild and get a pitcher who is 30 years old? Do you even know how a rebuild works? You KEEP your important prospect and sell on your valuable older players! You build on the young core for a rebuild.
c1234
You sell older valuable players who won’t be around much longer for more valuable prospects.
bighiggy
2 of our top 3 prospects plus young weaver and Fernandez wouldnt be sweet? I mean I know theyd have to add somebody else but I doubt any team gives up their top 2 prospects, a young controllable starter also in our top 5 prospects just a year ago, plus I think like our 13th prospect and a whole lot more. I know degrom and Syndergaard are phenomenal but there is a limit to their value as well. I guess we will see what it takes when and if that time comes. I never mentioned a rebuild, they need to get something in return for expendable players, gyorko, martinez, maybe even Pham. They have some great young talent being blocked by higher priced redundancy is all I’m saying. Maximize their assets.
bighiggy
The cards young players have outproduced almost all the veterans(minus carp and molina) and it’s a shame. All prospects I mentioned in a fantasyish trade would be expendable. And man would a Syndergaard or degrom really be an awesome step towards the cards being much better. I highly even doubt the mets trade either.
cardinal steve
Why should they trade Gyorko? SD is paying a good portion of his salary, and if he’s on this team to do what
He was acquired to do (be a super utility player) and not an every day starter, he’s the best utility man in the game. I’m fine with them trading JMart and Pham. I was calling for a trade of TP in the off-season when his value was through the roof. And why are we talking about the cards adding a SP? That’s their strength. They need offense, come on!
ad3
Yep, need a new voice. Matheny and Mabry out for sure, go after Joe Girardi.
c1234
Sell=rebuild
Supilikethat
Lol didn’t the giants offer a trade with shark for Clint Frazier?
aussiegiants53
I like the Shark as a dude, I can’t see them trading him tho, who else out there would want him? Might have to kick in some cash, doubt the Giants throw another prospect in to trade him….
woodstock005
At thus point giants should be considered rebuilding
The outfielders is a mess
Pitching staff very messy
Not know who rotation are
By committee that bouch style
Just like at work place co worker by committee not good
Sell and dump high end salary players
Give cash for shark plus prospect
Please take him
pinballwizard1969
Seriously Jeff Samardzija he’s the last pitcher the Yankees would be interested in.
Carrington Spensor
Jeff Samardzija?
Hey, maybe the Yankees can also bring in Edwin Jackson and Homer Bailey as well!!!!
fasbal1
Dont forget Wainright and Shields
swanhenge
Garza
fasbal1
In other words the Cardinals and front office with stick with their cheap plan and continue down a path of disaster. All the organization cares about is the 3 million plus fans going through the gates, but care less about the disaster they put on field from day to day.

Well that’s a shocker. The Giants are “willing to part” with Samardzija? I’m sure they’d be fine driving him to the airport and shoving him and his contract out the door.
aff10
Can always count on Nightengale to get the scoop that no one saw coming…
norcalblue
Yeah, There is just no excuse for Nightengale to write garbage news like this. It’s the kind of “report” you would expect from Henry Shulman.
Michael Birks
They wouldn’t even stop the car as they did it either
downsr30
What do the Cardinals even have to sell? They just should sit still and see what happens, and if anything make some managerial/coaching/front office changes, because things haven’t been great for a while now. The times they’ve spent significant money Fowler, Cecil, Holland, Gregerson – it’s been really bad. The Ozuna trade wasn’t bad, he’ll be fine, but it’s an issue if he’s still battling shoulder issues, and the Cardinals didn’t take more caution with that.
As far as selling pieces goes, I’d probably agree with you more if there was something worth selling. What desirable trade piece do they have? Jose Martinez to an AL team? Jedd Gyroko? Other than that, everyone else you’re going to be selling way too low, or they are owed too much money for anyone to want.
stollcm
This
jdgoat
Mikolas and Carpenter would each bring back a nice prospect package. Norris and Martinez might bring back something intruiging as well. Everyone else won’t be traded or has not much value at all.
downsr30
You have Mikolas at a relatively cheap price for next year. Why would you trade him? Unless you’re going into a full rebuild, which they aren’t, it wouldn’t make sense to deal him.
jdgoat
I doubt they’ll be able to compete next year with the Brewers and Cubs in their division and Mikolas’ value may not be higher. I’m sure a team like the Yankees or Brewers would give up a lot for him.
allweatherfan
Tommy Pham has talent despite his current struggles and is relatively inexpensive. If there’s a market for him I say trade him.
downsr30
Once again, I’d ask why you’d trade a young, controllable player that is having a down season compared to last year. He was the Cardinals best hitter last year. I’d use him to build going forward.
fasbal1
Tommy pham can attribute his struggles to himself and his stupid comments he made in SI. One good year does not make you a star, and your minor league numbers are irrelevant. His feelings were hurt because the Cardinals left him down so long, right now they look correct in their evaluations. Pham is a cancer on this club.
downsr30
On June 1st, he was the Cardinals best hitter. 29 other teams would be happy to take him off the Cardinals hands. He will be fine.
Vedder80
Because he isn’t young.
ShieldF123
Yea I didn’t know being on the wrong side of 30 made you “young” as a pro athlete
fasbal1
The Cardinals historically have a much higher opinion of their players than anyone else has, you would be lucky to find any team that would put value on any Cardinal, they like you said are overpriced or lack value. If there was any way to start stockpiling young talent the time is now, but it’s hard to make chicken salad out of chicken $hit.
em650r
The Giants need a overhaul as well
simschifan
As a Cub fan this may seem blasphemous, but why all the hate on the Cardinals? They are a really good team with a manager that is probably past his time in that organization. They need someone younger that can kickstart the team. Dexter Fowler for example is having a horrible time there thanks to Matheny. I’m really surprised he’s been given this long of a leash. Who in the cardinals history or organization is popular with the fans that can take over and put a little life in them?
jonesy
I think Stubby Clapp should step in and see how that goes the rest of the season. Matheny just isn’t what the Cards need.
I believe they could make some trades too. Too much talent riding the pine.Jose Martinez was said to be switching to a part time role. That’s a waste.
its_happening
Girardi if you want to win now. Clapp or Oquendo if you don’t.
fasbal1
Clapper or Oquendo

Clapp..or Oquendo
msjrn509
MATHENY DOESNT HIT BALL ,FOWLER IS A HORRIBLE HITTER AND YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HELL YOUR TALKING ABOUT.
simschifan
ME TARZAN YOU JANE. Seriously though besides Fowler they are a struggling team and the leadership is clearly lacking. Matheny is that you?
fasbal1
Your use of capitalization shows me you know what your talking about..thanks
c1234
Yes Matheny needs to go. La Russa’s fingerprint on the cardinals since faded and now Matheny doesn’t know how to manage a team!!
echozulu88
Matheny burner account
playhard9
Joe Girardi should be the Cardinals next manager. Matheny is as dumb of a manager as there is in MLB but the players have sucked too. Time for a shake up.
simschifan
And Matheny is fired boom.
downsr30
Joe Girardi makes a lot of sense as a manager for this team. Former Cardinal, great with young guys.
Old User Name
Joe is a good manager but may be a bit too uptight for the younger players.
Michael Chaney
With as stale as the Cardinals have gotten, uptight might not necessarily be a bad thing
Old User Name
Good point.
Cubbie Steve
How is that a change from Matheny?
jfive
An overhaul for STL would and should start with Matheny being shown the door
Dotnet22
Mabry should be right behind Matheny.
jfive
agree
c1234
Yep!

He gone

Shark is one of those analytic pitchers that fans in that troupe gravitate towards. The Jose Quintanas, Tyson Ross, Chris Archer arms that are talented and can put it together for a season, aren’t entirely consistent. Good pitchers, but once you dish out a big contract or pay a ransom in a trade they leave you wanting more than “He’s a good pitcher with some advanced stats”
chesteraarthur
What? Jose Quintana has a career fip and era that are almost identical (3.56 – 3.59) and isn’t a high strike out pitcher. What “advanced stats” are you talking about? He was also consistently good for like half a decade so I’m not sure how that is “putting it together for a season”.
It seems to be a trend where people rail against “advanced stats” in a post, while showing that they do not understand what that term means.
jdgoat
How do any of those pitchers relate?
Judge Judy
Andujar for DeGrom and call it a day already. Win-Win. Yankees get the #2 they desperately need and the Mets get an elite 3rd baseman for the next 5 years.
VivaBeavis
I’m a Yankee fan, and I do think Miggy has value, but there’s no way he alone is enough for DeGrom. It would probably be closer to Miggy, Frazier, and either Adams or Sheffield. Wouldn’t surprise me if a fourth, lower tier prospect lottery ticket was thrown in too.
thegreatcerealfamine
Don’t even take this joker #Judge Judy seriously about this or anything Yankees related. He’s nothing but a troll.
Judge Judy
No way. That’s 5 years of Jeter, Bernie and Andy for…. 2 year of Degrom???
thegreatcerealfamine
Go troll elsewhere!
Thomas Walker
You think that’s all it would take to get DeGrom?!? You must be joking…..or smoking. Either way, not even close. Add Sheffield, and about 2-3 lessor pieces, and you might pry him loose, but the Yanks won’t do that anyway.
Judge Judy
Got to start somewhere.
Mattimeo09
You shouldn’t start at all
Gambit1193
Hey Giants, Ellsbury is available too

Braves will continue to be on the fringes unless O’s become desperate. Anthopoulos does not want to give up anyone in the system right now. A year or two from now yes.
geauxbraves
Nor should he, at least not for a rental. If MM was the piece they needed, maybe, but they are more than one player away.
Boogaloo
Samardzija is available, thanks for the info.
In other breaking news, the Yankees have let it be known Jacoby Ellsbury is available.
Cubbie Steve
Hacking other teams, the Fowler saga, a manager recruiting a pitcher to inform on the other pitchers…
The Cardinals as an org are now a second-tier org. And it starts at the top. Right or wrong, the Cardinal Way doesn’t work with the snowflake generation.
Rich Hill’s Elbow
As a Twins fan, I’m kinda tired of hearing about Sano’s (unfulfilled) potential. Maybe St. Louis can fix him, but only for Jordan Hicks and Andrew Knizner.

Hey Cardinal fans, nobody talks about their awful defense! They have some nice parts but no consistency and just an ok pitching staff,Martinez most talented but not a #1 at this point, they are what they are,GM has to take some heat for this, buys the
c1234
This is why Matheny NEEDS to go. Hicks hits a batter, walks a batter, single, and keeps hicks in! wtf? Obviously he doesn’t have his stuff today. MLB managers have to have common sense
c1234
Literally I person in the stands could fill in for matheny and do better than him!

Bad contract/Injured Player swap … Ellsbury for Shark.
Samardzija – 33 y/o – $49.5M remaining through 2020 ($19.8M / yr)
Ellsbury – 35 y/o – $57.9 remaining through 2020 including $5M buyout of 2021 ($21.1M / yr)
+ Yankees pay the difference ($8.4M)
SFG gets a serviceable center fielder that is blocked from playing time in NY.
NYY get a warm body with an arm that could slot into the rotation or long relief.
No one loses out on cash. No one is stuck paying for a player they dont want. Perhaps a change of scenery rejuvenates either or both. Ellsbury would probably accept the trade through his NTC since it’s close to home and he wont ever see the field in pinstripes again.
Both deal with frequent injuries and are currently on the DL. It’s just a “why not” roll of the dice kinda move.
