Scouts from at least a dozen teams watched Zack Wheeler’s start on Tuesday, SNY.tv’s Andy Martino reports. There’s enough interest in Wheeler that the feeling is “ ” for the Mets, and he “ Beyond the Yankees and Reds, who were already known to be looking at Wheeler, the list of interested parties also included such clubs as the Rangers, Mariners, and Red Sox. It isn’t any surprise that contenders like Seattle and Boston are checking in, though the Sox may have already addressed their rotation need with their acquisition of Nathan Eovaldi earlier today. Texas is an interesting name, as the Rangers could’ve been doing their due diligence or (since Wheeler is under control through 2019) considering making an early move to upgrade next year’s pitching staff, which will be a clear offseason need for the club.
Here are more rumblings from around baseball as we’re less than a week away from the trade deadline…
- “Something extreme would have to happen for us to consider moving [Bryce Harper],” Nationals GM Mike Rizzo told Joel Sherman of the New York Post. While short of an outright denial, it doesn’t seem like a Harper trade is even a longshot possibility for the Nats. If anything, Rizzo said the team is still looking to add (in the form of starting pitching and a catcher), though Sherman notes that the general manager didn’t rule out the possibility of eventually selling some impending free agents if Washington can’t get back into the pennant race. Such moves would be lower-level veterans and not Harper, as Sherman runs through the rather limited and difficult market the Nationals would face if they did make him available.
- Dodgers scouts have been watching Tigers closer Shane Greene both before and after Greene’s recent DL stint, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports. Greene only missed 12 days due to some minor shoulder inflammation, and has since pitched in five games. He has posted solid numbers (4.19 ERA, 9.63 K/9, 2.3 BB/9) despite some issues with allowing home runs (1.5 HR/9). Kenley Jansen obviously isn’t going anywhere as the Dodgers’ ninth inning arm, so Greene would bolster the Los Angeles setup corps.
- Also from Fenech’s piece, he reports that a Red Sox executive was recently in attendance to see Francisco Liriano in action, and notes that Liriano could be a fit as a left-hander out of Boston’s bullpen. The Sox are currently going with eight right-handed relievers, with southpaws Bobby Poyner, Robby Scott, and Williams Jerez down at Triple-A, all of whom are far less experienced than a veteran arm like Liriano. While Liriano has struggled overall as a starting pitcher for the Tigers this year, he has dominated left-handed hitters and would fit as a LOOGY in a return to relief work.
- The Braves have a lot of trade options to consider, chiefly in adding starting and/or relief pitching, as MLB.com’s Mark Bowman explores in an overview of the team’s deadline plans. If Atlanta does look for hitting, there is some speculation that Tigers third baseman Nick Castellanos could be a target, as Detroit has had scouts looking at the Braves farm system (though the Braves’ past interest in Michael Fulmer surely also played a role in those evaluations). Castellanos may be available, if not outright shopped, in trade talks, though the Tigers have put a high asking price on the slugger.
- Kyle Gibson could emerge as part of the talks between the Twins and Brewers, MLB.com’s Jon Paul Morosi tweets, should the two teams expand their negotiations beyond just infielders. Milwaukee was in need of pitching even before recent bad injury news about Brent Suter and Zach Davies, and adding a controllable (through 2019) pitcher in the midst of a strong season like Gibson would be a major boost to the Brew Crew’s rotation. Adding Gibson to the mix might help Minnesota get a better return in a trade, as Brian Dozier and Eduardo Escobar are only rental players.
steelerbravenation
The Braves are slowly starting to fall off so any additions would have to have team control for at least next year as well. I would love to see some sort of deal for the Marlins 3 headed monster of a bullpen that would be an interesting blockbuster like all 3 for Gohora, Anderson & Pache
coldbeatle89
That is an absurd amount to give up for their bullpen guys. Maybe if you took out Pache. Maybe.
SuperSinker
Ya probably not the most efficient team building principle to be trading viable OF prospects for fungible right handed relievers
RunDMC
Did you not hear the price tag MIA was putting on Streckenridge? At the rate, no thanks.
CT
Damn I’m glad you aren’t the Braves GM. We’d have no farm system and a terrible mlb team if you were.
Just FYI, Pache will be a Top 50 prospect in baseball by the end of the year. The Braves aren’t trading him for anyone other than a superstar with tons of control.
kleppy12
no team is trading a superstar with tons of control unless they get like 3 top 50 prospects, what would be the point? Think Mets with DeGrom, they would only take a kings ransom otherwise they just keep him for their own rebuild.
Knowthemarket
Nobody is trading top 100 prospects for relievers at a 1/1 rate either. THAT didn’t even happen with Hand as they also got Cimber and as many have suggested, I would say it was a move of desperation.
Mjm117
You’re right. San diego didn’t get a top 100 prospect for Hand/Cimber. Except that they did in a top 10 overall prospect in addition to being the #1 Catching prospect. I’d say it was a win/win for both teams.
Mjm117
Atlanta fans are funny. Already calling Pache a Superstar when he’s now only hitting HR’s. Don’t get me wrong, I think he has a ceiling of Sterling Marte offensively but with Inciarte type defense. Floor of Enciarte right now offensively/defensively. Let him establish himself before adding that label on Pache.
I think Anderson can be the best of the SP’ing stable Atlanta has and if Gohora can put it all together can be a solid mid rotation SP’er or at worse elite reliever.
That would be a kings ransom for the Marlins 3 Top relievers. Highly doubt Atantla would do such a deal. Although I’d love it if they did.
petfoodfella
I just don’t see the appeal to Gohora. Maybe I’m missing something, but I just haven’t been impressed. I’d trade him in a heartbeat. Maybe even a 1/2 of a heartbeat.
Mjm117
His below avg changeup and decent command hold him back from being a strong SP’er. If he doesn’t improve on that, he has the plus plus FB and plus Slider to fall back on in relief.
braves28
No one has actually called Pache a superstar. All that was said is that he shouldn’t be traded unless it’s for a superstar, big difference there..
Anyways, the Braves would be silly to make the suggested trade. It’s been a great season, but this team is still a front line starting pitcher and a late inning bullpen arm away from being a serious contender.
elmore80
I think alot of Braves fans are more worried about the farm system’s ranking than they are about winning. We are close now, Why wait for next year,Might not get this close again.
sufferforsnakes
Falling off? So, 10 games over .500 and a game and a half back in their division is considered falling off? In what universe?
pinstripes17
That is insane to give up any of those prospects, for three mediocre relievers.
gleybertorres25
Mediocre? lol
brandons-3
The Braves are a young team with too many holes to fill. They’re close, but not legit yet. Probably need another bat, another starter, and at least two relievers. They faded towards the end of the first half. I think the All-Star break rest has given them a little bit of energy, but feel they’ll start to fade in August. In the offseason, the rotation will likely fix itself with the health and progression from the minors. They’ll have money to spend and more defined needs. Just not sure if a big move would be the best management of your organizational talent at the deadline.
Mjm117
For Barraclough, Zeigler, and Conley. I’m sure Miami would do it.
ronnyalton
The braves are only getting started. No need to burn through the resources prematurely. I like this conscience approach theyre taking towards upgrades.
Rocket32
Exactly, no need to start burning prospects to win now. They could trade for Trout and they still wouldn’t be a championship caliber team. Going for anyone that dosen’t come with team control wouldn’t make sense.
SuperSinker
They would be the best team in the NL with Mike Trout lol
kleppy12
no they wouldn’t, the Braves biggest issue isn’t hitting or the outfield, it’s piching. While obviously, yes, Trout makes every team better he doesn’t improve you pitching staff really because he would replace Inciarte who’s pretty good defensively. In the playoffs you need at least three if not four starters and right now the Braves have Newcomb and Folty, then who?
nymetsking
and Trout’s NOT good defensively??
kleppy12
I’m sorry can you please point out where I said that? I am comparing Trout to Inciarte who is one of the best defensive OF’s in the NL (or just baseball) so you aren’t getting a huge improvement there, he’s not replacing JD Martinez or some terrible defensive player like that. If you look at advanced fielding metrics Inciarte is actually rated as a better defensive player than Trout. I’m not sure I totally believe that (Trout has a better arm and that doesn’t factor in those numbers as much because throwing out guys doesn’t happen as often) but either way you aren’t getting a huge improvement so it doesn’t really impact how good your team is defensively, which is the Braves biggest area of weakness.
RunDMC
Here we go…a Trout trade request. Now you know everyone has joined the party that is the Trade Deadline. Welcome.
Assdribble_Cabrera
That’s not what he said.
bkfansler2
Agreed
RunDMC
I understand it was used to make a point, but it’s like calling “fire” in a movie theater when referring to Trout and trades on this page this time of year.
clayc
The Phillies are just getting started too and the Nationals have the budget to make sure that this is the only season like this that they have for a while. So I would not mind a win now mentality this deadline. I mean who knows what happens next season and what it will take to win the NL East. OTOH it is so much fun to watch a young and exciting team grow together. That said, I am good with whatever I guess. Enjoy your day!
sergefunction
“ I like this conscience approach theyre taking towards upgrades…”
So do I, as opposed to the alleged AJ Preller lack-of-conscience approach.
Zach725
Exactly. I will be a little upset if we don’t buy a cheap reliever though.
steelerbravenation
You think only 2 guys would get it done ? All the better then but I don’t think it would but adding Pache would def be an overpay what do you think it would take ????
thecoffinnail
Something like Gohara or Anderson and Wentz plus a catching prospect like Jackson or Contreras would probably get it done.
southi
There is a HUGE difference in value between Contreras (someone shooting up in value), and Alex Jackson (someone who is trying to convince the braves he is worth keeping in the organization).
thecoffinnail
Agreed.. My apologies.. I have got Contreras on the brain I guess.. I meant to put Jackson and Cumberland.. Contreras should definitely start shooting up the rankings once he gets to AA. Jackson had a rough year in AA but since his promotion to AAA he has been much better with the bat (.991 OPS). It’s a small sample size but hopefully he continues with it.
xabial
“Something extreme would have to happen for us to consider moving [Bryce Harper],”
It’s called being brave. The first step is admitting you have a solid-core that can win w/ or w/o Harper. In the long run, if you know your chances are bleak to re-sign (barring championship? (My speculation, situation complex, fluid…)
Prospects netted could help more in the long run…They need to be eliminated from contention, to start the conversatIon.
xabial
For the record, I do not think they will trade Harper, but think it’s smarter move. [Non-Nationals’ fans] do you agree or disagree? Agree to disagree? 😉
its_happening
Dealing Harper would be beneficial to Washington if they can get a better return than a QO rejection. 99.9% sure that would happen.
CowboysoldierFTW
I agree with the TrimReaper
JoeyPankake
He is a rental who has put up 0.5 WAR. How much could he really be expected to bring back?
Mjm117
Similar to the Machado haul, I would say.
nymetsking
Agreed. If they think he’s going elsewhere (and with Robles & Soto they’re probably better off spending 30mil a year upgrading other positions), they’d be wise to land themselves a top 100-type C or 2b prospect and two lower level SPs.
Solaris601
Rizzo should just take the best offer he gets for Harper and have done with it. When you strip away the hype that surrounds Harper you’re left with a fleet-footed Chris Davis in his walk year.
Here’s my proposal: Harper to SF straight up for Andrew McCutchen, and I think the Giants would do it. The trade eliminates the QO for both after the season, but McCutchen would keep WAS in buy mode and give them a spark Harper isn’t providing. Giants will fall in love with Harper and sign him to a ridiculous contract after the season.
Mjm117
Wow you’re seriously undervaluing Harper. Pretty horrible proposal, particularly for the Nats.
majorflaw
“Here’s my proposal: Harper to SF straight up for Andrew McCutchen. . .” (sic)
Why in the world would the Nationals want Mccutcheon? He’s a corner OFer now, so who is he gonna displace Soto or Eaton—both of whom are controllable for several years?
“Mccutcheon would keep WAS in buy mode . . .”
WTF does this even mean, “keep them in buy mode”? Either you are making the team better or you aren’t and that trade does not make the Nats better.
“ . . . and give them a spark Harper isn’t providing.”
If that’s the best rationale for the trade you can come up with the Giants shouldn’t waste the cost of a phone call. This sounds like a trade proposal from a Giants fan, it certainly isn’t from a Nationals fan.
“ . . . and I think the Giants would do it.”
I’m pretty sure they would do it, else they would look for a new GM. Speaking as a Nats fan however, your proposed trade isn’t the slightest bit tempting. Rather keep Harper in any event but you’re treating him like an ongoing problem for the Nats to solve and he isn’t. They are fine keeping Harper for the balance of the season and then trying to re-sign him. When Rizzo spoke of requiring an unusual haul were he to trade Harper he was not talking about a thirty-five year old corner OF. Come on, at least try to be objective.
SuperSinker
I still think there’s tons of good baseball left to played in Washington. I know everyone’s down on them but their roster is packed with talent. I could very easily see them playing .550+ baseball and surging these next ~60 games.
petfoodfella
They haven’t yet, but you sound like ESPN making excuses for Washington. They haven’t won anything of significance since Bryce came to town either. He’s not going to resign with them, he’ll go to the AL for 10-15 year contract where he can DH part of the time as well, or when he’s older.
If he really loves Washington, he’ll come back as a FA after you trade him. I’d do it.
xabial
10 to 15 year contract? Are you mad man? Who is starting to sound like ESPN now??
He is batting .216 in 343 AB. (423 PA)
You have to focus on batting average when it’s closer to .200 than .300, if you’re giving out 10-15 year contracts.
His Walks (80) OBP (.363) and HR (25) are legit.
xabial
Ironically, forgot one stat that will help Harper get paid the most, if he signs a long-term deal with player opt outs.
Age (25). He is an anomaly age-wise for FA. Harper is the same age as Aaron Judge, when he won Rookie of the Year.
Mjm117
More realistically, its not a matter of “If” but “when”, from “who”, and “for how long” will a team(s) offer him a long term deal..
fisher40
Of course they are!! ESPN always caters to east coast teams
B-Strong
As high as his ceiling is, he’s not getting a 15-year contract. That is absurd. That’s a sure fire way to cripple a teams ability to contend in the long run. I think clubs that hand out 10-year contracts are crazy. Of all the things I wish there were in baseball, a 5-year max contract is pretty close to the top. If they’re still great after 5 years, sign them again. I hate this push for decade-long contracts that are almost guaranteed to be a dud by the time they’re over.
brandons-3
Teams are the ones offering. The MLBPA would have to agree, which why would they when they’re being offered? Look up the largest sports contracts in history, a majority of the highest ones are baseball players.
stymeedone
Moving Greene and Liriano, due to the demand for bullpen arms, seems likely. Again, the talk about Castellanos is just writer speculation, and not an actual rumor. I just don’t see a fit for him on a contender.
Detroit_SP
I say move them all. Fiers, Lariano, Zimmerman, Greene, Coleman, Hardy, Wilson… There are so many prospects to be had. First four should net top 200 prospects (#6-15 organizational), next three should each bring back a top 30-40…
As far as positional players go, however, I like the idea of keeping Iggy, Castellanos, and Martin. Two things help young pitchers: keeping the ball down, and quality defenders. There is not a single player in the organization that can do what Iggy does at SS. He isn’t old, either. Castellanos is a clubhouse leader, and though I know 12-year-olds that take better routes on a flyball, he should continue to show some improvement out there – even if his defense ends up falling just short of replacement level. Meanwhile, Martin is having his best defensive year and his assist rate out there is ridiculous. It shouldn’t diminish over 2-3 years, at which time the team can move on. But like point one, quality defenders help young pitchers.
xabial
After 2018, Zimmermann loses his full NTC, and gets 10 team no trade clause, ($25 million in 2019, and another $25 million in 2020)
Something to consider. Zimmermann-trade would be fun to follow, because of the amt. of $$$ assume DET would have to cover. I like those type of trades. They don’t happen enough. (Not that scale)
Stat_head
Wasn’t aware of Zimmerman’s NTC. If he stays healthy and keeps pitching effectively his contract will start looking more reasonable. Since teams now seem to value prospects more than $$ it will be interesting to see if he gets more attractive over the offseason. He’d be a candidate for a salary dump deal (fringe prospects only) or an exchange for a smaller contract of an underperforming starter/position player.
sfgfan101214
Who cares how bad he is on fly balls! He is a 3B and will only get line drives & pop ups!⚾️
Stat_head
The article is wrong, Nick is a RF not a 3B. He’s proven he can’t defend effectively at 3B. It’s still likely he can be an average or slightly below average defender. This is why he won’t be traded. A team like Atlanta has to assume he won’t improve, because he may not, and the Tigers will value him assuming he will improve. Unless a team wants to overpay he’s not moving.
Stat_head
I’m torn on Iggy because he’s an FA at the end of the year. He’s not a qualified offer candidate and is likely going to be too expensive for the Tigers to resign since they aren’t competitive. Also torn on Martin because his value will never be higher but he probably provides more value to the light hitting Tigers than a contending team.
xabial
I feel the exact same way as you do about Iggy, and I’m not even a Tigers fan.
Detroit_SP
I personally prefer keeping them because you’re going to have a payroll no matter what, and though they have a terrible record, they’re actually 1 game ABOVE .500 at home. People still show up to the games because they have a chance, especially at home. That’s a big outfield to patrol. I would think Martin’s value goes up if he puts 1.5 years of good baseball together as opposed to .5… remember, he was pretty bad last year. I think his value is in the 80-90th percentile of what it could be, but I feel like his peak would be next year’s trade deadline if he keeps playing this way.
And as far as Iggy goes, he is still relatively young and a defense-first SS isn’t in demand right now, I don’t think anyway. So his value is probably highest to the Tigers, for now and for the near future.
steelerbravenation
Well take a look at what the O’s got for Machado and think if you would be happy with that return because at best that is what you would be looking at possibly something a little less than that even because I really only seeing the Phillies or Cleveland making that move this year
bravesfan
These are names I can get on board with for the braves. Problem is NC would be a rental, and him and Fulmer would cost a lot in prospects
stymeedone
Castellanos is not a rental. He’s also not a 3B, which is the only place Atlanta could force fit him into the lineup.
jbigz12
He can play a very rough 3B.
BallzDeep
and he can be moved to the Outfield if Nick Markakis leaves this offseason
diller79
Castellanos played 3B his entire career and just moved to OF this year because tigers got a young major league ready 3B at trade deadline last year (Jeimer Candalario) so saying Castellanos can’t play 3B is just ridiculous
casualatlfan
He can “play 3B” in the sense of that’s where the Tigers have elected to play him, not because he’s any good at it. By every single defensive metric, he’s been terrible at 3B, and he’s essentially a DH at this point. Yes, technically he can play there, but there’s no logical reason why he SHOULD play there unless a team is desperate.
baseballfanforever
How are his outfield skills ?
CL1NT
But NC has been hitting very well since 2016. If the Braves get a position player, I hope it’s him. He could be an actual threat as a PH. And if Camargo starts going downhill, he could cover 3B. Hell, AA might want to put him at 3B anyways and bench Swanson (Camargo moves to SS). I don’t think he would do that, but he might be done with Swanson this year if he thinks NC can be way more productive.
I would like NC an option to platoon with Inciarte against lefties. And be the bench bat/PH that the Braves need. Inciarte just isn’t producing with the bat this year. And I don’t see him “figuring it out now”. It’s time to make a push, and get in the playoffs.
Thr Braves are pretty much gonna have to play .500 ball, or better, to get in. It would be a high price for a rental. But if DET threw in Fulmer, I would just about give up any of our pitchers except Touki. And I’m more of a prospect hoarder than anything. I don’t think Allard is gonna play up in the majors with such a low K rate. And all of the fringe guys Wisler/Sims/Gohara/and even Fried, are not guaranteed to be MLB pitchers. I’d rather make a push.
ffjsisk
Castellanos is arb controlled through 2020
casualatlfan
He’s arb controlled through next year, not through 2020. He entered this year with a little over four years of service time, so he’s gone after next year barring an extension.
bravesfan
Right. So rental isn’t exactly the right term. But he isn’t a long term solution. I’d still like him though, but I understand it would cost to much to get him. Would love fulmer more. He’s having a down year but I can see him being an ace for a long time
dugmet
wheeler makes the most sense to move if the mets receive two prospects with equal or higher potential. wheeler is cost effective, controllable, healthy at the moment and pitching effectively. Id be asking teams fir a top 5 and a top 10 prospect from their system — depending in strength of their system.
xabial
Britton is 2 month rental, and got NYY top 10 prospect (SP Dillon Tate) Wheeler is Arb eligible once more, 2019
Almost had me there.
thegreatcerealfamine
Yea Tate was a top ten prospect but had no future as a Yankees starter Though I hated to see him go he was gonna be a BP arm, but who knows when really.
xabial
I know, I’m saying it’s not enough Wheeler team-control to offset Britton’s track record, despite Britton being a 2 month rental and netting top-10 NYY prospect.
Who would you rather have?
1/2 season of Zach Britton, Roll the dice and gamble he returns to form as he gets further and further away from his Injury.
OR
1 1/2 years of Zach Wheeler? Zach A or B?
xabial
Darn. Zach Britton. Zack* Wheeler. Lol
jbigz12
Who knows when? If you move him to the bullpen he could be up at the beginning of next season. He’s almost ready to go as a starter.
thecoffinnail
That could be why the op said he would be looking for an org top 10 and an org top 5.
mikeyank55
Zach Wheeler is a Met who also has a history of not making 25 starts. So what are you gauging your excitement?
DL visits or mediocrity
Hantoneenee
dugmet
Question: Why are mets fans on board with this front office trading any cotrollable players? We have no GM!!!. After the Familia trade and getting a questionable return, why would ANY met fan be comfortable with what they get in return for Wheeler or any player on their roster?
I get it people want a rebuild, but can’t you do the same in the offseason once a GM has been picked?
Just asking you’re opinion here……
mikeyst13
If they can package Wheeler and Asdrubal to the Brewers they can probably get a better return than they would shipping them individually. Cabrera’s mini slump and the glut of available middle IFs available has really hurt his stock of late. It seems as if Milwaukee has shifted its focus to the Twins though….
inkstainedscribe
Renting Castellanos not a smart move for the Braves. Full stop. Considering him as a future RF if they don’t re-sign Markakis is worth considering.
jarrett62960
Castellanos isn’t a rental…
thegreatcerealfamine
You’re right, but doesn’t it seem like he’s been in the league for like ten years. I guess it’s all that potential they were waiting for to pay off, the whole keystone third baseman thing that didn’t workout.
BlueSkyLA
Re: Shane Greene. Since when is a 4+ ERA for a reliever a solid result? He also allows 1.3 baserunners per inning. Not terrible, but not great either.
Yelsnit
Thank you! Thought the same.
DodgerBlueSince82
Yeah I’m not understanding this one at all. The Dodgers have plenty of in-house options already in the pen or coming off the DL with numbers as underwhelming as Greene’s. There are actually several that have better numbers. I would much rather them try to get someone like Raisel Iglesias from the Reds even if it takes a few prospects to get him
BlueSkyLA
They haven’t traded for him yet, but it would not surprise me if they did as he would fit with this FO’s philosophy on middle relievers, which is a never-ending parade of mediocrity. Burn one up, throw him out, find another. Repeat endlessly. And if anyone doesn’t believe this is true, take a look at the Dodgers’ bullpen and name a reliever not named Jansen that any other team would covet in a trade. Even some of the worst teams in baseball have one or two. The Dodgers have none.
Iglesias would be a great add, but really pricy. I’d be shocked if the Dodgers went after him,
doxiedevil
All us GM types…..lol. I would trade from minor league pitching with Atlanta but the Braves should hold on to position talent. Pache could become a every day outfield soon for the Braves, he has a lot of upside.
deweybelongsinthehall
Give Bobby Poyner a shot Boston before Liriano.
socalblake
(Speaking Braves)Unrelated but there’s a great article from ESPN on Dale Murphy
griff24
The Mariners with as bad as farm system as they have should give no better than a top-15 prospect to the Mets for Wheeler.
