TUESDAY: The deal is official. India receives a $5.3MM bonus, MLB.com’s Jim Callis tweets.
SUNDAY: The Reds will sign first-round pick Jonathan India, per Jon Heyman of Fancred. India’s bonus isn’t known, but his selection – No. 5 – comes with a $5.9MM slot value.
India was a star third baseman at Florida, where he was particularly excellent in 2018. The 21-year-old concluded his tenure with the Gators by slashing .350/.497/.717 with 21 home runs in 226 at-bats as a junior, leading to both a high selection and top 1o pre-draft rankings at Baseball America (No. 6), MLB.com (No. 8), ESPN (No. 9) and FanGraphs (No. 9).
India will bring an “advanced” offensive approach to the Reds, per MLB.com, which lauds his “excellent plate discipline,” ability to hit for average and decent power. He’s also a threat on the base paths and has the athleticism to play all over the infield, according to MLB.com. India’s defensive versatility could be especially useful for a Cincinnati team which has third baseman Eugenio Suarez locked up for the long haul.

Reds are putting together an interesting collection of talent. It’ll be interesting to see how they get them all on the field in the coming years
watup0100
I’m interested to see if India is fastracked like Senzel kind of was. Of course that is also based on performance in the minors but I think if his “discipline” is as good as they say he will be up in 2-3 years. By then hopefully the Reds veterans are still performing and their pitching is under control. This could be a decent team by 2020 ish.
FromTheCheapSeats
…2019 if they can come up with two more starting pitchers.
redsfan54
Thank you. Have been saying this and people think I’m crazy
ovp66223
Hoping Scooter and Iggy get traded (we aren’t going to be able to keep Scooter for cheap) and bring back a top SP (ace upside) and CF.
Then the Reds HAVE to sign ONE high priced FA SP (SP1/SP2 type). Then they’ll contend.
FromTheCheapSeats
India should be moved to shortstop tomorrow, and left there.

Are you assuming Hamilton will be traded or bench player?
WhoDeyAllDey
If he can’t produce with the bat or get on base, his speed his useless
mbauza25
But have you Sean how many hits he takes away
WhoDeyAllDey
This is true.
My lineup with India references 2020/21
ovp66223
He takes away 1 hit for every 4 he leaves at the plate. He is a net-negative player. An average defensive CF would make all but 15 of his outs, but hopefully double that in improved offensive production over Hamilton (not setting the bar very high).
I hope Hamilton is NOT with the Reds next year, not unless he takes a big pay cut as a late inning defensive replacement and pinch runner. he is NOT a starting MLB player and never has been. When he starts a much better hitter is on the bench and Bham is killing run production and rallies.
hiflew
So you think Duvall, Scooter, and Hamilton will just go away for nothing?
mbauza25
Pereza can’t hit and the reds are not giving up on Hamilton
simschifan
Just hit a grand slam. Great timing
stricke3
Peraza just cranked GS today. Hamilton starting to get on more often. Trade value increasing.
Judge_Smails45
What are you talking about Peraza can’t hit?
tv 2
I know right. he should be in the two hole. he knows how to bunt and move runners
progers2622
Trammell CF Shed Long 2nd base Jose Siri RF Senzel LF bit the rest you had sound great
chound
Now, just get some pitching and you have a nice roster.
BrandonGregory74
I don’t think Gennett goes anywhere. I could see him playing 2nd or being a super utility guy. Senzel plays Shortstop and Billy hangs around as the defensive glue in Center.
If they can get a return for Harvey or by some miracle he wants to re-sign they’ve put their rebuild a year ahead. If the Reds turn the corner next year or in 19 the Matt Harvey trade will be the catalyst.
thegreatcerealfamine
They’re not getting anything for Harvey.
astick
While you’re at it, what are the winning lotto numbers?
thegreatcerealfamine
I’ve got a fiver that says zip-nada-zilch.
FromTheCheapSeats
Wanna bet?
thegreatcerealfamine
Sorry to be harsh, but the Reds nice little run is just that. If they don’t get new player development, a totally new upper management, they will be in this same position 2-3 years from now.
astick
Between you and thegreatcerealfamine, you should open a fortune telling booth.

Astick, At least your fragments make some sense these days, if not much.
tv 2
they still need pitchers but they are going longer and longer. It can take time. If they can come up with 2 solid from their mlb club or their farm they can but the other two. this rebuild has a lot more cash to spend than the last one. by 2020 payroll will be around 130 mill. they will be able to add 50 mill a year to the payroll after mez and bailey are done.
ekrog
I recall a comment a year or so ago that Suarez is nothing but a utility player. Was that you? I think it was.
ovp66223
As a Reds fan I agree to an extent. I hope this run does NOT keep the GM from trading Scooter and Iggy while they’re at stratospheric value levels. Scooter is really good, but there is literally 0% chance we’ll be able to keep him after next year given he’ll be looking for probably 5yrs and 80 million or more.
I hope I wake up one day in the next 25 days and here they got another teams top prospect for Iggy and nearly the same for Scooter. Hopefully one is a stud CF prospect and another is a stud SP1 prospect.
SueJen
Reds have bats at major and minor league levels. Need pitchers to develop. To say Peraza can’t hit is insane.
BrandonGregory74
Peraza has been terribly inconsistent at times. When he’s locked in his at bats are long and he hits good pitches. When he’s off he’s flailing at anything thrown toward the plate. The good news is I’ve only seen one bad stretch this season and that was the first 20 games or so.
joeshmoe11
Peraza has no power and zero on base ability. He’s a placeholder until he starts making real money and someone better is brought up
Letsgoreds1
Love this guy. The future for the offense looks awesome.
C – Tucker Barnhart/Tyler Stephenson
1B – Joey Votto
2B – Nick Senzel
3B – Eugenio Suarez
SS – Jonathan India
OF – Jesse Winker, Taylor Trammel and Scott Schebler
I am not counting out Peraza, I just see him as a utility man. Billy Hamilton should be strictly a 4th OF, once Trammel arrives in the MLB.
Pitching is a whole different story of course. Trading Raisel now or after the season is over could really help to change that though.
ksoze
I think you have to hang onto Scooter. Here’s my 2020 line-up
1 RF (R) Senzel
2 1B (L) Votto… LaValley back up 1B/3B
3 3B (R) Suarez… Blandino utility infielder
4 2B (L) Gennett… Long back up
5 LF (R) India
6 CF (L) Trammell… Friedl 4th OF
7 SS (R) A. Rodriguez… Downs if he progresses very fast
8 C (S) Barnhart… Stephenson back up
Rotation: 1 DeSclafani 2 Castillo 3 Mahle 4 Green 5 ?Santillan?
Pen: C, Lorenzen
7-8 L, Garrett 7-8 R, Herget
6-7 L, Finnegan 6-7 R, Rainey
joeshmoe11
Gennett is a terrible defender so if he has a future down the road it’s in left. Rodriguez is a terrible hitter and has made no strides since entering the organization so to assume he’d be mlb ready in less than 2 is optimistic to the nth degree. I’d go Votto, Senzel, India, Suarez across the infield. Siri, ?, and Trammell in right center left.
ksoze
Rodríguez is all glove, and will probably remain an all glove player. He is MLB ready with his glove Now. He’s only a stop gap till Downs is ready, but my guess is that won’t be until 21 or 22. Gennett is a poor defender, but his bat has proven to outweigh his lack of D, I hope Siri, and Aquino can get back on track offensively, but they both have seemed to hit a wall.
BrandonGregory74
I’m not sure Lorenzen is consistent enough to be a closer. I think he’s a great set-up guy to the closer though.
ovp66223
He’d be a great CF I think. Reds fans starting to clammer for FO and coach to put Lorenzen in CF/OF as he has a good arm and hits like an OF already.
He played both ways in college, so not like it would be some shock to him. I’d say at this point he has more value as an every day player if the Reds don’t think he can be an SP (and obviously they don’t).
Letsgoreds1
Really liked your opinion on the future starting five. Hunter Green will take some time, but man he will be awesome when he gets here.
The reason I would trade Scooter is this: they have to break the trend of trading guys too late. Chapman, Frazier, Bruce, never traded Cozart. Scooter I can see falling into that group. Let’s say he stays and then returns to his Brewer track record next season. You just blew a chance to get a really good prospect for a guy that will be approaching 32 years old when we are competing again. I love Scooter as much as any Reds fan, but you have to take advantage of this.
ovp66223
Can’t afford Scooter, sorry. He’ll want $15/yr probably after this contract ends and the Reds can’t really afford that with young player extensions and a hopeful SP1/SP2 type signed as an FA this off-season or next. Scooter is Arb eligible this off seaosn and will probably get a raise from $5 million to $8 or 10 million and an FA before 2020 season, so he’ll be looking for 5 yr deal and probably between 75 and 100 million if he keeps hitting like a top 10 NL hitter.
If the DO sign Scooter it basically means NO SP signings worth a crap and I think at this point we need a top of the rotation SP FA more than Scooter given we have several promising (not great) middle IFs coming up. Add in India who might well be a SS or 2B if blocked by Suarez and we can fill in 2B with a solid player, but until we get REAL SPs, we’re doomed to no better than .500 ball and probably less.
BrandonGregory74
Senzel will be a SS I believe
