The Reds announced Friday that they’ve selected the contract of infielder Dilson Herrera from Triple-A Louisville. It’ll mark not only the Reds debut for the 24-year-old, but his first MLB action since a 2015 trial run with the Mets. Left-hander Cody Reed was optioned to Louisville in a corresponding move.
Herrera came to the Reds alongside left-hander Max Wotell (who was released yesterday) in the 2016 trade that sent Jay Bruce to the Mets. While Herrera was once viewed as a premium prospect, shoulder troubles have slowed his development in recent years — to the point where Herrera actually went unclaimed on waivers last year and was outrighted off Cincinnati’s 40-man roster.
So far in 2018, however, Herrera has made great strides in rebuilding his stock. He opened the season at Class-A Advanced as he eased his way back into things following 2017 shoulder surgery but quickly proved ready for a greater challenge, hitting .298/.359/.429 through 21 games in the Florida State League. The Reds then bumped Herrera back up to Triple-A, where he’s batted .297/.367/.465 with seven homers and 10 doubles through 208 plate appearances.
It’s been a long road back to the Majors for Herrera, and while there’s no immediate opening for him to receive everyday at-bats in Cincinnati with Scooter Gennett at second base and Eugenio Suarez at third base, that could change in the coming weeks. Gennett, after all, is a potential trade candidate given that he has just a season and a half remaining until reaching free agency. Herrera could also simply function as a bench piece, spelling both Gennett and Suarez occasionally while serving as a pinch-hitting option late in games. Whatever his role, Herrera will at the very least deepen the Cincinnati bench for the time being as he hopes to play is way into more prominent standing with the organization down the road.

I don’t understand this move at all, scooter should be here to stay, extend him, we are just a piece or two from contending next season
sameichel
Senzel will be up then but still if one one this team has to be traded it should be Duvall or billy, senzel could easily get some work in the outfield
Yankeepride88
A piece or two? You need multiple rotation arms and multiple bullpen arms. The Reds are not close to contending unless they develop or trade for great pitching
dhud
Reds bullpen is good enough to compete right now
stricke3
Our starting pitching may be better than any Yankee fan wants to believe. Time will tell. Meanwhile Herrera presents a nice trading piece along with some prospects you may not be aware of. That could be the answer to your belief we are short of a big named starter should we choose that route. Several options to competitiveness much to your chagrin.

The Reds bullpen is one of the better pens in the NL and Dick Williams has said that the Reds feel like they have the prospects to make a trade in the off-season to acquire a front line starter. And then the reds will be set if Desco stays healthy and Reds young guys like Castillo and Mahle keep developing.
mbauza25
Yes your so right , we need one more starting pitcher and a good power OF that hits for average to
sameichel
Give him a 4 year contract

Scooter isn’t going anywhere. They only brought up Herrera because he’s the best hitting option to replace Dixon who they only sent down because they needed pitching depth after that extra inning game. Although he’s played so little they probably want to get him some regular at bats. As far as contending goes they’re somewhere in the middle. Good enough to contend for a playoff spot next season but not to really compete for a title of any kind. They’re bullpen is very good as well as their offense. They need starting pitching and need to get deeper on the bench. That’s part of why they had such a bad start. Votto always starts slow and Schebler and Suarez both were out for extended periods of time. If they stay healthy as is they’re about a.500 team maybe a little better.

If his shoulder is healthy, maybe he could be used in left?

If memory serves, NYM thought that Herrera’s future was in the OF.

I agree there is no reason to trade anyone from the infield. One good starting pitcher and a decent 3or 4 slot starter and they might have a chance
johnnyringofwc
Scooter is a hometown guy who can produce. Keep him around.

my thoughts exactly, Reds haven’t had a local player this talented since Griffey Jr., Dave Parker before him (I’m in no way saying Scooter is anywhere as talented as those two), going back to Pete Rose, it’s something that Reds fans hang their hats on and take pride in. They move Scooter and they’ll alienate even more fans than they already have. Things are feeling like they’re just starting to turn around

Teams bring guys up all the time that are doing well in the minors for bench help. Dixon needs to get some at bats. Nothing more then that. This is no way meaning Scooter is getting traded. Also good for Dilson. He worked hard and was rewarded with a call up.

The reds obviously need starting pitching and a couple outfielders. Hamilton and Duvall definitely should be traded
BrandonGregory74
If Billy only gets on base at a .280 clip the plays he makes on defense still make him valuable. Hamilton needs to stay as long as he’s a plus defender. He saves so many runs it’s ridiculous.

Trade Scooter and prospects for SP. Play Herrera at 2b for remainder of the season( we aren’t contenders this year anyway) then either sign or trade Herrera. Depending on how well he does at 2b. Worst that can happen is he doesn’t do well, then we play Senzel at 2b next season.
