The Red Sox announced that they’ve placed left-hander Chris Sale on the disabled list, retroactive to July 28, with mild inflammation in his pitching shoulder. The team recalled righty Brandon Workman from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Sale’s roster spot.
Fortunately for Boston, expectations are that Sale will only miss one start, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe tweets. Assuming that proves true, this won’t be a catastrophic occurrence for Boston, which has seen Sale continue to serve as an elite starter since acquiring him from the White Sox entering 2017.
Dating back to his change in Sox, Sale has worked to a tremendous 2.56 ERA/2.31 FIP with awe-inspiring strikeout and walk rates (13.04 K/9, 1.92 BB/9) across 355 1/3 innings. Last season was the third straight 200-plus-inning campaign for Sale, who has logged a 2.04 ERA/2.08 FIP with 13.21 K/9 and 2.11 BB/9 over 141 frames this year to once again put himself in Cy Young contention. Thanks in part to the 28-year-old Sale’s brilliance, Boston has registered the majors’ best record (75-33) en route to a six-game lead in the AL East.
Whether he misses one start or more, Sale will count as the third BoSox starter on the DL, joining Eduardo Rodriguez and Steven Wright – each of whom are seemingly dealing with more severe injuries. For now, the Red Sox will continue with Rick Porcello, David Price, the just-acquired Nathan Eovaldi and Drew Pomeranz in their rotation, and they’ll utilize lefty Brian Johnson as a starter to cover for Sale’s absence. However, in the event Sale’s injury proves more serious than expected (and if Rodriguez and Wright still aren’t back), perhaps Boston will end up on the lookout for yet another trade pickup prior to the end-of-August waiver deadline.

Yeah Pomerantz and his walks… guy struggling bad with control and can’t seem to figure out about staying ahead of the hitter…. but also want to know where are the Sweihart ney sayers have gone….some bust huh
Josh Marion
I actually kind of like it…I bet he isn’t hurt at all. They’re giving him a start off, which I’ve wanted them to do all year…I didn’t think it would come against the Yankees, but if they give him the Yankees start off, it prevents them from getting another look at his stuff before October hits.
Pretty interesting strategy imo, assuming he isn’t actually hurt (which I doubt he is).
Fever Pitch Guy
Exactly two weeks ago Sale threw 100.7 MPH, hardest since his 2007 rookie year when he was a reliever. At the time I compared it to Pedro overthrowing in the 1999 All-Star Game, which caused the same thing … shoulder inflammation resulting in a DL stint for Pedro. There’s no doubt in my mind this is 100% the exact same situation.
emac22
It doesn’t seem flimsy to be 100% sure based on virtually nothing?
Fever Pitch Guy
This from Fangraphs: “In a separate excerpt, it’s shown that Martinez thought he knew how he developed [shoulder] inflammation in the first place: Martinez said his problem might have stemmed from overthrowing in the All-Star Game, when he started at Fenway Park and struck out five of the six batters he faced to earn MVP honors..”
emac22
I didn’t say it was even unlikely
100% has a very specific meaning and I think it was pretty obvious you were ignoring it.
Fever Pitch Guy
According to Sale, he started feeling it his “last couple starts”. Guess how many starts he’s had since the All-Star Game.
If you want to get technical, I never said the injury is 100% related as I’m not in a position to make such a definitive statement. I’m 100% convinced it’s at least partially related, based on valid comparisons and especially timing. But nobody from the Red Sox wants to hear that or give that as a reason, so they’ll probably try to blame it on something like a change in how he grips the curve or whatever.
emac22
“There’s no doubt in my mind this is 100% the exact same situation”
I’m not looking for any points and I actually agree with what you’re talking about. I’m 100% on board with the idea that single pitches like that can be the cause of injury.
There is however doubt in my mind that it’s the cause here and that was the only part of your comment I disagreed with.
Fever Pitch Guy
There’s no right or wrong when it comes to what we are convinced, we both have a right to say what we think … so it’s all good. In Pedro’s case, I don’t believe that any doctor or team member came out and said that was the cause. Pedro is the only one that said it. Doesn’t make him right or wrong either, because it’s just his opinion too. He was convinced that was the reason, and most people agreed with him.
jakec77
If you were his treating doctor and made that statement I’d think it was ridiculous.
Since you aren’t, I don’t know what word best describes your comment. (I’m assuming you aren’t his doctor, if you are I apologize, and your comment remains ridiculous).
Fever Pitch Guy
If you don’t think overthrowing can contribute to shoulder inflammation, then there’s nothing I can do to help you.
siddfinch1079
Jake, there’s no doubt in my mind this is 100% Fever Pitch not grasping what you are trying to say…

Baseball is a marathon, the Sox have looked unbeatable to this point, but the playoffs are outlier, anybody can win. Just ask the Indians, they were the Sox last year.
emac22
Amazing how many “great” pitchers are suddenly injured when it’s time to play the Yankees.
srechter
Sounds like you think you’re making an obvious point, but I have no clue what you are referring to.
emac22
Sounds like a personal problem.
thegreatcerealfamine
Just a matter of time till someone tried to make us all look like fools…exactly 5 minutes.

Yea, and of course MikeyYank joined the party. Casey’s probably not far behind..God help us all
emac22

emac22
We need a quiet place for red sox fans to have a little self pity party.
srechter
What hurts the most, honestly, is how disgraceful you are to honest to god trollers everywhere. You all pick on such low hanging fruit. I offer lessons. Casey never accepts them, but I’m willing to help all who care to try.
emac22
Lessons from a professional troll?
Is this just your business plan or did it already fail?
srechter
This is exactly why you need me. I mean, you went with “sounds like a personal problem” as your go-to. Cringy, man. You and the ilk on here are gnats to swat away. A true troll goes deeper and messes with the brain.
emac22
You should try an adult goal.
srechter
Ah, the “are you 13?” defense. Poor. Even my students know better. Take some time to reflect on the nature of pseudo-intellectualism and your place in this chat. Who are you and why do you continue to respond? And ask yourself, am I responding to you or are you responding to me?
emac22
An adult goal doesn’t say anything about your age.
It’s a recommendation that you aspire to someone more than being a good troll.
I probably should have started with a recommendation of some basic english classes but I don’t mind explaining everything I post to you. That’s really fun.
3rdStrikeLooking
Narcissism anyone???
srechter
Ah, my friend, these errant and erratic posts suggesting some form of obvious superiority through dismissiveness are tired and well-tread. I’m playing the game right now and you are following along. Come along now, simplistically assault me in a way that anyone can to any blank face in the crowd! Or, try harder. Think deeper. Find a way to one up this charade and tell me what I really am and what I’m really doing.
srechter
3rd strike, I just like to play with these poor fools after I’m done grading papers. It’s an easy and all-too satisfying catharsis.
emac22
This is what you learned in troll school?
After you grade papers you like to troll people on the internet?
Are you looking for pity or is that the kind of life people you know brag about?
srechter
Look, man. You intentionally say nonsense to get an immediate rise. I look for people like you when I’m bored because you give me exchanges like the astoundingly awesome one we just had. I don’t think the posts you make are in any way serious or meaningful, so I pounce on them in admittedly non-serious and non-meaningful ways. The troll school stuff and offering my services is obviously nonsense to provoke, well, this. Thanks!
mikeyank55
Oh boy, what a sweet clubhouse of chummy Red Sox fans. Wait til your boy JD meets Sale on the DL. Then you kids will be screaming for ice cream.
srechter
Lol about time mikeyank showed up to this one
emac22
I know.
Believe it or not this really is about the 4th time this year a starter suddenly needs a little rest before his start against the Yankees.
It was intended as a bit of a dig but it was actually was something that I’ve been noticing. It may all be legit but it’s been good pitchers and I don’t recall seeing it so often in the past.
Salvi
Good pitchers avoid Yankees, yet they still 6 games out. Pathetic. Imagine if they did pitch against them.
emac22
Right after I imagine life without Boston teams cheating.
thegreatcerealfamine
srech…Hate to tell you I told you so, but what the hell. Begs the question, where’s The C-man?
deweybelongsinthehall
Just started reviewing the exchanges on this. Why waste time? That said I was wondering why No one has brought out how Judge and Sanchez were disabled prior to the Yankees’ most important stretch of the year. Give the team credit for doing it just a bit earlier to avoid the conspiracy theorists.
sources
He is probably really afraid of them after he pitched 7 shutout innings, gave up 1 hit, and struck out 11 @NY the last time he faced them.
emac22
Don’t feel too bad. It’s not uncommon for some of the weaker minded among us to have success and then get scared because you know things can only get worse.
He’ll get over it at some point but it might take an NL park.
ellisburks
Yeah he must be shaking in his boots at a team he has a career 1.61 ERA against with 130K in 100 innings. He must think that this time the Yankees might get 2 runs off of him.
emac22
You sure are.
Sale goes on the DL supposedly for one start and red sox nation all needs medication.
I understand how history would leave you with so little confidence but my god. The antidepressant industry up there must at full production.
ellisburks
I am confident the Sox will be in first at the end of the season. Yanks are good but the Sox are just better. Losing one start by Sale won’t change that.
emac22
I get it. I’m just as confident the yanks prevail. That’s what makes this all so much fun. Nothing’s better than watching red sox fans lose a big august lead.
Bruin1012
The Yankees have there chance they have the easier schedule in August but the Sox have the easier schedule in September. If the Yanks don’t make some noise in August it’s over for the division.
mikeyank55
Yes source…however more stress innings on his lanky arm.
And how did Price do the last time around?
PopeMarley
Take a hike bruh.
Charles Schwab
Why wouldn’t he want to face that lineup? Just makes his numbers all the better

Amazing how many yankee “fans” have no idea what they’re talking about

Thanks for checking in Tom. You need to take your velour slippers off before you go to bed though.

Nice to see you mick. You’ve been surprisingly quiet about judge leaning into that pitch to avoid facing the red sox. Does it not concern you how worried he is?
User 4245925809
Hmmm.. Severino maybe should have ducked out his last couple of games vs those “powerhouse” KC and TBR teams, since both clobbered him so badly…
emac22
If he played for the red sox he probably would have. The Yankees prefer to see their players fight through their problems instead of hiding.
butch779988

I have to wonder if you guys are trying to be this funny or if I should feel guilty about laughing at you.

You may be the dumbest commenter on here. And I have to see mikeyank all the time so that’s saying something. Quit diggin a hole with your tongue and just shut it.

You have to look in the mirror every day so you are undoubtedly qualified to know a complete douchebag when you see one.
I’ll try to do better.
mikeyank55
Saving himself to smoke you guys out.
You have lots of laughs having played such an easy schedule to date. The next two months will break your teams back.
Watching with a big smile!
Bruin1012
Well the Yankees better catch Boston in August because after August the Red Sox have a much easier schedule in September and a lot more home games. So no as usual you are wrong Mikeyank not two months the next month August if the Yankees haven’t caught them by then probably over but don’t let things like facts get in your way.
emac22
The next 10 days will end your season.
You can dream about September all you want but August is all it will take.
Bruin1012
Highly doubt it but you can dream.
Bruin1012
Hey eMac the schedule won’t matter if the Yankees keep losing to teams like Baltimore and nice effort by your up and coming Star second baseman. Have you ever heard the saying “ those in glass houses”.
pasha2k
Shuddup, Sale not like that!
Priggs89
Hahaha. The guy has a 1.61 ERA in 100.2 innings vs the Yankees. Are you really trying to say he’s scared of pitching against them?
Armaday
That should make this a lot closer
stug14
They used 5 pitchers last night. This is a chance to test him and get an extra bullpen arm.

BREAK OUT THE BROOMS.

Yanks I’d assume. I had them splitting the series 2-2 winning Sale’s and Eovaldi’s starts, but I’m not sure what to think now.
Connorsoxfan
I had the Red Sox winning those starts I mean
thegreatcerealfamine
Unfortunately I’ve got the Sox taking 3 of 4, but of course I hope not.
craig breslow
Been a tough couple hours to be a Red Sox fan…
thegreatcerealfamine
Hasn’t been a cakewalk being a Yankees fan either.
Adam6710
Why has it been tough for either of them?
Salvi
How bout the past 24 hours?
1) Win walk-off 13 inning pitchers duel against first place Phillies
2) Push lead to 6 games
3) Trade next to nothing for excellent defensive 2nd baseman, exactly what they needed
4) Gave their ace a week vacation (I hear he’s heading to Smugglers Notch, ‘to rest’)
Bring on the Yankees!
craig breslow
Those are all good, but the Herrera tease stung and any injury to your ace, no matter how minor, is at least discomforting.
Bruin1012
Well that really sucks.
MetsYankeesRedSox
Casey Palmer assures me the Red Sox will be fine.
stansfield123
If the Red Sox were engaged in any kind of significant trade for a starter, they wouldn’t have weakened their negotiating position by putting Sale on the DL today. They would’ve waited to close the deal first.
stansfield123
never mind, I didn’t know the trade deadline came early this year.
Bruin1012
You do realize the trade deadline is always July 31st and End of August for players that clear waivers.
stansfield123
Yes. I do. But it’s usually at midnight, not middle of the afternoon.
stansfield123
Wow. Yanks lose Judge, Red Sox lose Sale. Even Steven for the weekend series, I guess.
repboy1
Inflammation usually means TJ
Bruin1012
Not in the shoulder you dolt.
Salvi
Non-informed usually means clueless
Sale just did interview on NESN, and looked fine. Also, you don’t have TJ on a shoulder.
emac22
He looked fine?
Did you expect to see a detached arm or just the normal tears of self doubt and pity?
Salvi
How about a sling? How about favoring his arm? How about the slightest look of sorenes? How about any indication that he would need surgery that would put him out for 18 months?
And again the tear would have to move down his arm for him to need TJ surgery.
emac22
I’m not making a case for TJS.
I’m just pointing out that seeing someone on TV isn’t a basis for a diagnosis of any kind.
Salvi
Saying someone looks fine isn’t a “diagnosis”.
emac22
What do you call it?
Connorsoxfan
An anti diagnosis
Salvi
I guess I did give a diagnosis, So I got it from a TV, whats wrong with that?
Its still better diagnosis than “inflammation means TJ”
emac22
I read your post. What do you think would support your point if I read the definition?
I’d be angry and try to blame others if I said something that stupid too. Having a tantrum about it and pretending that a dictionary or an education will make you sound like less of a fool doesn’t really work unless you’re intimidating children.
Don’t feel bad. Everyone has a brainfart once in awhile. Just accept it and hide your shame instead of twisting yourself in knots trying to make it sound like you aren’t a complete idiot.
Salvi
I didn’t want to prolong your trollng ‘definition of diagnosis’ so I changed to just agree with you. To shut you up.
You are angry, its sad. Friends would help a lot.
Again, no matter what you say, he clearly doesn’t need TJ Surgery. He looked fine. Thats my diagnosis. Still a better one than the diagnosis you’re defending.
thegreatcerealfamine
Thing is the regular posters know who the real Yankees fans are. So bubye…
emac22
I’m not angry when people come to their senses and agree with me.
I know you’re a little chapped because being schooled is a little embarrassing but you shouldn’t have held on to those lame excuses for so long.
Salvi
Schooled about TJ surgery being in elbow, not shoulder? You should really check your surgeries.
Angry little boy inside.
emac22
Are you having a hard time keeping track of who you’re talking too? I never said anything about a shoulder or elbow.
Stupid little boy. Please keep up or go home. Play doctor with your sister. Not on the internet.
mikeyank55
Thanks doctor Denny. Glad that you are on the Red Sox team medical staff. Now it makes total sense why they under report injuries. Cheerleading has its advantages, huh?
stansfield123
Usually? Shoulder inflammation is AUTOMATIC elbow surgery.
Bruin1012
He gets amped up to face the Yankees and won’t hold anything back so maybe they don’t won’t him letting it lose like that at least that’s what I hope. If he comes back after the 10 days only misses one start then the Sox probably gamed the 10 day DL.
Salvi
Gamed the 10 day? Rest a sore shoulder, so it doesn’t get worse. I think this is exactly the reason it was invented.
Connorsoxfan
Well it’s retroactive to his last start so it’s really like 6 days or something.

With Sale sitting the Red Sox do not have even one reliable starter. As someone has suggested already give him all the rest he needs even if it is to the middle of September. The rest of the chumps or even their grandmothers could cover things with this offence.
Djones246890
“Mild inflammation.” With this guy’s mechanics, I’m surprised that his arm hasn’t completely dislodged from his body.
Every time I watch this guy pitch, I feel like I need to be put on the disabled list. God, it looks painful.
I think him getting injured will start to become a trend. You can only get away with those terrible mechanics for so long.
luclusciano
I think it is for real. I see everyone saying it is not, but they announced this at like 4:05 after the trade deadline. I think they waited as to not affect any possibilities they had in mind
x_jesp
Trust me he’s not hurt, they are preserving his arm for October baseball
xSpecBx
The idea that the red sox are doing this intentionally to rest Sale is ridiculous. I’m a Yankees fan, but from what I’ve heard of Sale he is a gamer who would not want to sit out against the Yankees. If this was Price I would say you’re right, but Sale wants to pitch and there no way the Sox would sit their best pitcher against the Yankees to get rest. you sit him against the orioles or rays, not the Yankees.
On the other side of it, my guess is its just what it is being billed as, mild inflammation. He’ll be back in a week or two.
