The Pirates announced today that they have designated lefty Josh Smoker for assignment. Additionally, infielder Max Moroff was optioned. Both of those moves make way for Casey Sadler to join the active roster after his contract was selected.
Smoker struggled in limited action this season for the Bucs and had been on optional assignment at Triple-A. He has been better there, spinning 35 frames of 2.83 ERA ball while recording 39 strikeouts against a dozen walks.
As for the 28-year-old Sadler, he’s back in the big leagues for the first time since 2015. He has turned in solid results this year while pitching alongside Smoker at Indianapolis, working to a 3.46 ERA with 7.3 K/9 against 3.5 BB/9.
In 5.2 Innings, 11.12 ERA and 11 hits allowed.
2.824 WHIP, and 9.69 FIP in that miniscule sample
How about letting the writers write the stories. They do more than fine.
Your blurb is pointless. 5.2IP when? At what level? Maybe instead of posting unconstrained data 1 min after the story posts, let the well versed writers update the story.
It was a learning experience for me, I like to see how terrible players are, before they get DFA.
“Your blurb is pointless. 5.2IP when? At what level?”
5.2 IP at the game’s highest level, 2018.
“How about letting the writers write the stories.“
What did I do wrong.
Don’t worry about him man, I enjoy reading all the stats you put up. You might be helping out the writers with them as well. I watch a few general teams mostly west coast cause I’m a giants fan, reading stats from a guy I haven’t seen helps me out lol. If they don’t like it they can keep scrolling.
Agreed Xabial, you provide value with you posts. Don’t sweat it.
That guy doesn’t know how stories are written here. (they likely use comments as leads even – sometimes we are faster) Nor does he know why I, and others I would guess, read the comment section. Keep doing what you’re doing. Keep doing your stats posts…not that you need my, or anyone’s ,approval.
The 5.2 IP was all the Pirates needed to see. So it wasn’t pointless to them. They kinda count more than the guy on here who thinks it’s pointless.
Smoker back to the Mets? They need arms and he performed well enough to make their pen.
9Im not sure any reason other than roster filler would be a n option i like smoker dont get me wrong but I don’t see much of a motive for the mets to do that, however I like seeing optimism in fans considering that as a pirate fan I hear a lot of ‘the end is nigh’ line of thinking or the all to familiar rally cry of ‘trade him while you still can!’ cough(aramis ramierez traded to the cubs)cough seeing fans who continue to look for ways for thier team to get better is refreshing. I also agree that if the mets are to succeed thier bullpen needs an upgrade
Ah, Josh Smoker. One of the guys I’ve followed for a number of years simply due to his absolutely phenomenal pitching name. Brooks Pounders, Josh Outman, Jonathan Holder, and, hell, Mark Hamburger all factor into this conversation.
Add Rock Shoulders to that list.
Grant Balfour
Diekman
Buck Farmer
There used to be a linebacker in the NFL named Steve Stonebreaker…
He is long retired but Royals 1B coach Rusty Kuntz must be in this conversation
Not a pitcher, but it would be something if Sicnarf Loopstok ever makes it to the majors.
Two from the NHL that are hard to top…both Scandinavians…
Per Djoos (literally pronounced pear juice) and Hakan Loob.
The Padres have a kid in their minor league system right now named Henry Henry. Can’t wait until he gets closer to the bigs, would be neat if he becomes something!
I think that the most unfortunate name for a pitcher belongs to Pirates broadcaster/color man Bob Walk.
Rockies had a guy, years back, last name Stoneburner.
Reminds me of when the Tigers traded Charlie Furbush for Doug Fister.
Yikes
Bob Walk is a great guy and I think a fine color commentator. He was actually a good pitcher with the Pirates. He,Jim Bibby, and Don Robinson were all very under rated in my opinion.I do agree however that it is not a good last name for a pitcher!
Surprised it took this long for PIT to DFA Smoker. Yeah, he’s looked good at AAA, but he was horrific in April with the parent club. Some team will probably pick him up, but it definitely shouldn’t be CLE.
Smoker??? I hardly knew her!!
Hope the braves try to get him on a minor league deal. Home town kid, 1st round pick. Before injuries the talent was there. I think it would be a cheap low risk minor league deal
