With Nolan Arenado scheduled to hit free agency after next season, the Rockies third baseman is sure to sign a massive contract in the near future. But Arenado tells Bob Nightengale of USA Today that winning – not money – will be his top priority as he determines his future. “I don’t want to lose anymore. I just hate it,’’ said Arenado, who has only played in one playoff game since debuting in 2013 and is “jealous” of the success the NL West rival Dodgers and Giants have enjoyed in recent years. Before Arenado potentially hits free agency, he’ll be watching with interest as fellow superstars Bryce Harper and Manny Machado test the open market during the upcoming winter. However, given that Arenado is older than both Harper and Machado (he’ll play his age-29 season in 2020), he doesn’t expect to rake in as much money on his next contract as they will on theirs. “I’m not here to say that whatever they get, I’m going to get,” he said. “Those guys are younger. I don’t expect to get the numbers they get. But as a fan of baseball, it will be cool to see what happens. I’ll sit back this winter and watch like everybody else.’’ While the Rockies could prevent Arenado from hitting the market via an extension, he’s not going “to start the dialogue.’’ Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich seems optimistic, though, telling Nightengale “there’s no rush to force anything now” and suggesting the team and Arenado have a good relationship.
Now for the latest on a pair of NL Central teams:
- As the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline approaches, the Brewers are “open to every possibility,” according to GM David Stearns (via Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel). With his team in first place in the NL Central by 1 1/2 games, Stearns is “highly motivated” to make improvements, writes Haudricourt, who notes that the Brewers could opt for a high-profile addition to their lineup instead of their rotation. That could be Machado, who’d be a massive upgrade for a Brewers team that hasn’t gotten much from the shortstop position this year and sent Orlando Arcia to the minors Sunday. Machado’s not under contract beyond this season, though, and as a result, Haudricourt doesn’t expect the Brewers to end up with him.
- The Cubs announced that they’ve placed reliever Brian Duensing on the 10-day disabled list and recalled right-hander Dillon Maples from Triple-A Iowa. The left-handed Duensing is dealing with fatigue in his pitching shoulder, which continues a less-than-ideal season for the 35-year-old. After Duensing posted an outstanding 2017 with the Cubs, they re-signed him to a two-year, $7MM deal in the offseason. The investment hasn’t paid off so far, though, as Duensing has logged a bloated 6.92 ERA with horrid strikeout and walk rates (5.88 K/9, 6.92 BB/9) in 26 innings.

Well if Arenado is concerned with winning, he will be leaving the Rockies. The Rockies owner has publicly stated that he is completely satisfied with making the playoffs once every five years.

I don’t have a link, but it was somewhere around 2012 or 2013. I have been following the Rockies closely for 25 years. You don’t forget when your team’s owner says that.

Oh, so trust what you say then, huh??

I don’t really care whether you believe me or not. I’ll still sleep okay tonight. You don’t like what I say, don’t read it. Once again, I’ll sleep like a log.

The 2 of 5 comment actually came after the original 1 of 5 comment after he took a lot of heat from Rockies fans. Monfort had a bad year that year because it was the same year he publicly stated that Denver didn’t deserve an MLB franchise. And if you need a link, just use Google.. I’m not getting paid to do the work for you.

RunDMC
Without following COL closely I read it as him making a case for an exit. There will be plenty of losers in the Harper/Machado sweeps that will be at the stage of winning to give him a healthy pay day and a driver’s seat in the playoffs.
lasershow45
Yup. Hopefully my Red Sox are one of those losers. I’d rather have Arenado personally. I don’t like Machado or Harper most of the time
Solaris601
If I’m a team ready to go big on one of those free agents, Arenado and Machado are the wisest investments because both are consistent producers. Harper has a superstar persona, but he is yet to establish offensive consistency. Not saying he won’t, but I wouldn’t delude myself into believing his May and June as well as his playoff performance last fall are nothing to be concerned about.
Kory
The reason a source is so important is because people remember what was said differently than what was actually said. He was talking about being a small market team and said a realistic goal is to make the playoffs twice every five years. Not that is what he was happy with but was trying to give the fans realistic expectations. denverpost.com/2013/11/30/rockies-owner-dick-monfo…

Glad to the Brewers are willing to make some improvements because I’m getting tired of watching the strikeouts pile up on this team and way too many shut outs of the offense. We have a month until the trade deadline. I wouldn’t mind seeing them move Villar back to ss and bring Huira up for a try if it doesn’t work then send him down and bring in guys like Andrus or Castro they are both still young and could help for years. Pina I think is very important as the starter but maybe bring up Betancourt or Nottingham in. If Thames is going to play some more outfield then they could do some first. The bullpen is looking strong but they gotta watch Houser and Williams innings because they have come back from major injuries. Lopez is doing good to so far this year. I think they gotta just go as if Nelson and Davies won’t be back until at least September 1. Which then you gotta decide if Miley, Corbin, Woodruff and maybe even Derby. I think Griep, Perrin, Olczak and Zagurski can help the pen. Hopefully they can flip Broxton and Santana for something. Would rather just go Phillips as the outfielder that they need to call up if they need one but once Cain and Yellich come back I think Thames and Perez can handle the back up outfield position. Saladino should be back Wednesday so you can give him a look at ss too. DFA I feel Sogard to AAA.
amishthunderak
Nobody can call BS on anything you said because nobody knows this much about the Brewers.
Jack Taddy
Brewers fans do…
ThatBallwasBryzzoed
Qhat brewers fans. The brewers are a half game ahead head of the Cubs. Unless the Cubs are in town. They dont ever sell out. The Cubs sellout 95% of their games. Basically mid may to the end of the season the Cubs sell out. The brewers struggle to get 15k of their own fans.
ESam103
Is that why the Brewers are 10th in attendance in MLB (average of 34,605 per game) and the Cubs are 5th. (average of 38,291). Wow what a huge difference.
notagiantsfan
I was looking at the All-Star voting released yesterday, and eventually ended up at MLB attendance. The Home and Road splits for teams is really bonkers. The Brewers are dead last in the NL in average road attendance. But 8th overall, and 10th in avg home attendance. Defending champs Houston is even worse than the Brewers in average road attendance.. The Cards, who I always think of as solid road draws are the next NL team.. Meanwhile Cincinnati, not having the greatest year, is 9th…..
Miami draws about 5K more on the road than the Brewers. It makes zero sense..
ESam103
Road attendance is just a crap shoot and you should only really look at home attendance. The Cubs could play at Miami and draw 17,000 while Milwaukee plays at LA Dodgers and draw 50,000. Does that mean Milwaukee is three times more popular than the Cubs? Any team that draws more than 30k per game at home is doing something right.
11Bravo
Dumbest comment by a Cubs fan all year. Congratulations.
BrewCrew54
You are just oozing ignorance. Typical from a Cubs fan.
BrewCrew54
It makes perfect sense, people don’t want to go watch their team lose at home.
retire21
I’ll call BS. Nottingham is NOT on the Thames!
tonysbrewcrew00
They need some OF in Colorado Springs tho… it can’t just be Wren and Phillips.. also Corbin will most likely be up after the All Star Break, and then Zagurski… I don’t feel comfortable putting him any close games yet.. and Andrus is in his walk/opt out year and came back from injury and I think he’s 30??? Although he’d be a good player to get.
scottstots
Wren was released
tonysbrewcrew00
Really?? I did not see that… so then they’ll need an OF in triple a
Brewblaz
Obviously you’re the complete Brewer supporter. The Brewers are a team that’s better than the sum of its parts. Right now what the Brewers need the most is a big bat somewhere in the lineup. Also the Brewers have given up the 2nd fewest runs in the NL. That being said, I still wouldn’t give up any good young pitching prospects (Hader,Williams,Ortiz,Lopez,Burnes,Woodruff,Peralta etc).. For too many years the Brewers have lacked quality pitching depth, and it surely has made a great difference in this team and hopefully going forward. Let Yelich,Cain,Davies,Nelson come back and role the dice.
stubby66
I kinda agree with that but do you think maybe they should let someone like Huira, Erceg, Ray, and Gatewood should be given a chance to see what they can do or keep the reins on them. I do believe that the Brewers are a very good team in having young players work more on their games then stats.
baseball1600
Always loved Arenado. Plays with heart, great work ethic, his brother is in the Giants Farm… maybe he convinces him to sign with them? Lol just joking, we will suck in a few years. No way he takes us over Braves or Red Sox.
Solaris601
Longoria’s contract will anchor him in SF for years to come, for better or worse.
baseball1600
We could always trade him in a salary dump, if we really wanted to. Kind of like the Braves did with Kemp.
Lance
and Kemp is having an All star season for LA
ThatBallwasBryzzoed
Longoria isnt stupid. He like Cutch are gone after this year. Pretty sure Longoria has an opt out. He’s not gonna stay with that team. He’ll leave as they expect him too.
Matt Cott
he has Atlanta Braves written all over him, Riley to left
inkstainedscribe
Riley could be part of the package to get Arenado from the Rox. Rox need controllable assets. The Braves have them.
thatdudetg
With the Rangers expecting to contend again in 2020, a new ballpark opening up, Beltré wanting to play one more season (only in Texas), and significant money coming off the books.
Texas could be a good landing spot for Arenado.
And before any Astros or Angels fans chime in… let’s consider that Verlander May be departing Houston after 2019. The Astros won’t be able to afford all three of Correa, Springer, and Altuve, four if you include Bregman. As for the Angels, you’re naive if you think Trout will be in LA after the 2020 season. The best player in the history of the sport will be playing for a perennial playoff contender.
johnrealtime
as much as I love arenado and would want him on my team, his home/road splits are sizable. he’s no bum on the road but there is certainly a boost from coors going on
its_happening
He’s no superstar with his career road numbers either. That’s the catch when playing in Colorado.
cards81
Cardinals call and say Reyes, Kelly, any other two outfield prospects or maybe an mlb player like Gryko who can play Third as a replacement….do the Rockies say no…that’s a top pitching prospect (injury history yes) top catching prospect, O’Neill maybe, top 100 prospect…seriously that’s a good return
hiflew
In any facet of making a deal in life, if the person making the offer says “seriously that’s a good return,” ALWAYS walk away from the deal. It ain’t a good deal.
Lance
terrible deal for the redbirds. take him out of coors and he’s very mediocre and he’s hit only 228 at Busch.
minoso9
I think Arenado is terrific. He can hit, great fielder and shows up ready for work every day. He has an outside shot at the triple crown this year. However, the Rox have excellent young infield prospects waiting for a shot. I’m talking about McMahon, Brendan Rodgers and the speed merchant Hampson. So trade Arenado for pitching, catching or 1st base help. The Rockies bullpen is another story. But we have a whole group of overpaid dudes out there who could become trade bait.
Lance
While Arenado is enjoying another fine season teams also know his numbers are inflated because of Coors. Nolan’s batting average is nearly 50 points higher in Denver…..His HR’s and RBI totals are far greater in the mile high city. this year, he’s hitting 357 at home and 260 on the road. Is that the guy you want give a huge contract to?
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Probably the best 3b defender in the league. A guy that had a road. 283/.355/.531 with a 140 ops+ in 17. A .260/.354/.487 with a 134 ops+ in 18. Yes I think he’ll be ok. BA is not at all a great indicator of offensive value. He’s not a guy you have to worry about being a low obp high slug player diminishing as he get older. You could have made a compelling argument he was more Coors made creation earlier in his career, but he’s developing into the type of hitter you can no longer put that claim to. Even if you were just to take his away offensive game from last year he was still a top 5 3rd baseman offensively. We’ll see how he’s does this entire year, but again I’m betting he’ll be up there.
its_happening
Career .265/.321/798 on the road. Not bad but not superstar. Tulo was a .279 road hitter when he was traded to Toronto. Arenado will be for a rude awakening.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
I don’t really care about BA tbh. I also don’t really weigh what he did early in his career to heavily as players have to figure out how to play on the road and make those adjustments. Just look at the last 2.5 years .832 ops 128 ops+, .886 140 ops+, and this year he’s at .860 139 ops+. Mix that with his defensive prowess and yes he is a superstar.
And don’t compare Tulo and Arenado at the stages in which they exited Coor’s. Tulo’s career was derailed by injuries. By the time he ended up in TO he was a shell of himself. Not to mention the turf doesn’t prolong careers.
Rod Pearson
We all know my Cubs are winning the central again
madmeme
You bought the team from Ricketts?
